Our highly-successful 2022 graduates returned to celebrate their academic achievements, we acknowledged support from our brilliant teachers and supportive family and friends, and we remain focused on our goal to expand offerings for our students.
Celebrating student achievement is a wonderful part of school life. Last week saw many Haileybury graduates from 2022 return for the celebration of academic success with the two Senior School Honours Assemblies.
It was wonderful to see the students move across the stage and receive the recognition of their peers and students from Years 10 to 12. This celebration reinforces a culture of hard work from students which leads to success.
It was also further recognition of the brilliant teaching and hard work of Haileybury staff and the great support of families and friends of students. The long applause for the seven students who achieved the highest possible ATAR of 99.95 was another acknowledgment of an outstanding student culture.
There was an excellent evening celebration of students who did exceptional work in music, performing arts, and creative arts subjects. Students performed and displayed their work in Music Investigation, Music Performance, Studio Arts, Media, Drama, Theatre Studies and Dance.
The great academic success of students in these subjects was also acknowledged. A remarkable 100% of Media students gained a study score of 40 or above, with 60% of Music Investigation students and 56% of Studio Arts students also achieving this outstanding level. These are brilliant results which contributed to students achieving outstanding ATARs, and the performance and portfolio nature of the subjects has given all students a set of skills which will stand them in good stead.
The ATAR — which is received through the VCE — is an important measure of academic success. There are, of course, many other components that go into a Haileybury education. Across Haileybury Junior, Middle and Senior Schools last year, more than 130 co-curricular programs and activities were offered to students. The breadth of programs, such as philosophy, beekeeping, debating, maths challenges and environmental clubs, gives all students a chance to explore their passion.
Haileybury will continue to seek to expand offerings for students. It is wonderful to have a culture which sees students so engaged with these opportunities.
Sport and physical activity are also a very important part of all-round development. I had the great pleasure of watching Haileybury girls first softball game play an 8-8 draw against Caulfield Grammar last Saturday at our beautiful softball field on the river flats at Berwick. This was the team’s second draw in a row. It was a wonderful example of school sport with lots of pressure in the closing moments and a great spirit between the two teams. We greatly appreciate the support of families for the sport program which delivers so much for the development of students.

Learning and connecting
We have started this year with a continued focus on two areas of culture — our Culture of Learning and our Culture of Connectedness.
The first is about students being prepared, ready, engaged and reflective in their learning prior to class, within the classroom, after a lesson and when doing homework.
The second is for every member of our community to be intentionally welcoming and to provide opportunities for students to showcase all aspects of their education, from Curious Minds activities to sport and the Creative Arts.
Our parents are an important part of our community and it was wonderful to see the level of attendance at our Information Evenings, Parent–Teacher Interviews, the Haileybury Parents and Friends of Castlefield first meeting, the Welcome BBQ, and our year level coffee mornings. There have been many opportunities for our families and community to meet and connect.
Student leadership
Over the past three weeks, our Junior and Middle Schools have conducted Leadership Induction Assemblies. The Junior School inducted their House and Community Captains while the Middle School’s leaders were sworn into office.
Julia Zaitseva and Alexander Tzouvelis addressed the Middle School assembly with inspirational speeches and passion for their roles as the Middle School Captains. We look forward to supporting all our student leaders.
Traffic
I thank families for continuing to be considerate of our neighbours and students as you drop-off and pick up your children. Please remember that the two-minute zones on Villeroy Street and South Road are drop off/pick up and go only, and parents are to remain in their car.
Early Learning Centre
Enjoying the start to the day
The children are settling into their daily program beautifully and they are learning the rhythms that each day brings.
Educators are having discussions with the children about the importance of following the group plan on arrival. This encourages children to take care of their belongings, pack away their own school bag, say goodbye, and sit on the mat for their morning meeting.
Children respond well to clear, consistent expectations and when a positive and predictable routine is established, it supports a child’s sense of security, independence, resilience and development.
Play-based learning and intentionality
It is wonderful to see the children engaging, developing relationships and interacting with their peers and educators. They are challenging each other’s thinking, building new understandings and testing out ideas. Play-based learning offers opportunities for children to learn as they discover, create, improvise and imagine.
Zones of Regulation
The Zones of Regulation is a conceptual framework to teach self-regulation. Pre-Prep children are discovering and learning about their thoughts and feelings and how these are attached to their emotions. Emotions are classified into colours representing a zone — green, yellow, red and blue. Games and discussions support the children to identify their zone and we listen to the children and use strategies or tools to help them move between the zones.
Junior School
We learn on Boonwurrung land
During the first week of school, we welcomed Jaeden Williams to the Castlefield Junior School. Jaeden is a proud Yalukit Willam man of the Boonwurrung People. As we started the school year we celebrated with Jaeden and his friends who shared stories about our land and performed a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony in East Quad.
Buddies
Starting in Year 3 with regular visits to the ELC, older students build rapport and connect with the younger members of our community. In Year 4, those students then have the opportunity to be a buddy to our Prep children. They visit each other’s classrooms for structured activities, share morning tea and often find each other in the playground at break times.
Middle School
Excellence every day
After a busy week inducting our students into life in the Middle School, they have made a fantastic start to their academic lessons. It is all about routine in the Middle Years and we use our Culture of Learning to ensure students are prepared, ready, engaged and reflective during every lesson.
Our students strive to bring excellence every day, with support from their peers and teachers.
Experiencing firsts
Every year is all about ‘firsts’. Our Year 7 students experienced their first cross-campus sport training, while our Year 5s headed off ‘overseas’ on their first Middle School camp to Phillip Island.
The Year 6s are excited about an interstate trip to Canberra to see Parliament House, Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport and our Year 8 students are relishing the responsibility of leading their schools and influencing their peers to be the best version of themselves.
We were very excited to induct our leaders and look forward to all they will bring to their roles.

Class representatives
Hello everyone. I hope the first two weeks have gone well. We have had some great attendance at Junior and Middle School Information Nights and it was great to see many new faces. Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to be class representatives and to those parents who came to the first HPFC meeting and offered their help for upcoming events.
The Welcome BBQ gave families time to socialise while the children became Ninja Warriors, had their face painted, devoured sausages and listened to some cool tunes!
Prep, Year 5 and Year 7 Parent Nights at the Marine Hotel are the next events on the calendar and we cannot wait to see parents meeting and socialising.
Finally, remember to keep in mind the Second-hand Uniform Shop (SHUS) for all your uniform needs.
Over the past five weeks, our students and staff have been enjoying the winter holidays with their families. With the opening up of China and the easing of pandemic restrictions, international staff have taken the opportunity to travel around the country and abroad to celebrate Chinese New Year. For our bilingual staff, the holidays were a time to return to their hometown to celebrate Chinese New Year.
Staff returned from the winter break a day earlier than students to take part in professional learning programs to prepare them for the start of Semester 2. During this time, I addressed the key leaders across the School who are involved in our international program and spoke about the key tasks ahead and how collaboration will play an important part in achieving these tasks.
We also discussed the clear expectations for all school leaders — every decision made is in the best interests of Haileybury, to always do their best, and there should always be implicit trust between the leaders.
I also addressed the Junior School English staff and all the Senior School staff. I spoke about our expectations for all departments and how we need to keep ensuring effective learning for all students. I reminded them of our core values: academic excellence, student welfare, professional learning and development, and an international outlook, and I addressed the key priorities that we will focus on in Semester 2.
Monday saw the return of students and we had a heart-warming opening ceremony to celebrate our return after the New Year. It was interesting to hear Haileybury leaders speak about the virtues of the rabbit: longevity, peace and prosperity.
Highlights of the opening ceremony were poem readings from staff and students and the singing of the school song.

Haileybury celebrates 131 years
Our School has proudly been in existence for 131 years — longer than all of us! Reminding ourselves of those who went before and acknowledging the challenges they overcame reminds us that enterprise and entrepreneurship are two qualities exhibited by our founders.
At our Junior, Middle and Senior School Assemblies, we looked at some of the history of our School and the success we enjoy due to the contribution and commitment of those who have gone before us.
We explored in depth the founding of the City campus and its growth from 17 students in 2016 to over 700 in 2023. It has been an amazing journey in a very short period of time and we acknowledged the vision and entrepreneurship of our CEO|Principal Derek Scott and the School Council.
This year, we acknowledged our newest campus, Haileybury Pangea, too.
Haileybury continues to go from strength to strength and we couldn’t be prouder to come to Haileybury each day to nurture and develop the character and contribution of our amazing children and young people. The future is in their hands and we are confident that their contributions will be far reaching.
City aims for excellence in 2023
This year, our goal is Excellence in Character and Contribution and I recently spoke about this at our Parent Information Nights. Throughout our School’s history, we have seen great examples of staff and students who have shown excellence in character and contribution. Our School is the privileged beneficiary of their commitment to ensuring that every student and staff member matters every day.
We will continue to challenge our students to think about how they are developing and showing excellence in their character and contribution. I warmly encourage families to use this shared language with their children, too.
Haileybury City hosts Rendall student leaders
It was a delight to host our Year 12 student leaders from Darwin. Haileybury Rendall School students are always amazed at our vertical campus and they certainly made the most of exploring every space and experience.

Connections in the ELC
A sense of belonging is fostered by the connections children make with each other, their educators and their environment.
This term introduces our Buddy Program with Pre-Prep children building connections with their Year 3 Junior School peers. Next year those Junior School friends will be our Year 4 leaders and so they will be a well-known and welcoming face for the 2024 Prep students.
Families will receive information about upcoming Buddy sessions that take place throughout the year.
Programs throughout the School also provide opportunities for some of our oldest students to connect with our youngest. For a number of years, the ELC has thoroughly enjoyed the early morning visits from Haileybury City Senior School students who are undertaking their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
We congratulate KausalyaGautaman (Year 12), who has been volunteering within the ELC for over a year now and who has been appointed as Haileybury’s ambassador for this prestigious award.
Junior School
A revamped play space brings smiles
Haileybury City Junior School has recently transformed its Level 3 play space to create a more dynamic and versatile area for students to play in and explore. The revamped play space is designed with different zones for physical, creative and imaginative play.
It has been wonderful to see students using the space in new ways, discovering untapped abilities and making the most of this new resource.
From little seeds grow mighty trees
Haileybury City’s Junior School aims to foster a culture of learning centred around ownership of choices and character development. This approach to how students care, learn and play strengthens each student’s individual contributions to the School community and prepares them for success in the future.
At City, our Junior School students understand that our actions and choices have an impact and that bold thinking hatches BIG ideas. With this message, we show them that from little seeds, grow mighty trees. We look forward to supporting all our students to learn and grow as individuals.
Reminders
Students dropped off at the King Street entrance and basement carpark in the morning must walk up to Level 3 without Mum or Dad. This is an important part of building independence and establishing a routine.
Please ensure your child wears their full PE uniform on days their PE class is timetabled.
Before School and After School Clubs are back in action for Term 1. Please refer to the myHaileybury app to find out more.
Middle School
HIIT is back!
Level 1 is buzzing on Thursday mornings because High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has returned for 2023. It has been wonderful to have so many students from all year levels of Middle School start their day with a fun, high energy fitness workout.
Students participate in activities including plank challenges, battle rope exercises, agility ladder drills, boxing and medicine ball slams. The HIIT sessions allow Middle School students to connect with their peers while improving their health.
All Middle School students are encouraged to attend each Thursday morning. No registration is required — simply meet staff on the Ground Floor ready to workout at 7.30 am.
Friendships and social connections
In Term 1, as part of the Thrive program, Year 6 students attended a BELONG workshop by Project Rockit about the importance of kindness, respect and empathy when engaging with their peers.
Students took part in activities, role play and discussions to learn how to foster healthy social relationships. The workshop focused on how to positively change mindsets and equip students with tools that support Haileybury’s Respectful Relationship pillars.
Typing Club challenge
There has been a fantastic response to the Middle School Typing Club Competition that began in Term 1 and finishes on Friday, 31 March at the end of Week 9. We are challenging our students to build their typing speed and accuracy with individual and class prizes awarded throughout the competition. The Homeroom that earns the most points will receive a pizza lunch.
Haileybury acknowledges that typing is a vital digital skill and we ask families to encourage their child to use Typing Club at home. Thank you for supporting this important program.

An exciting start
I hope everyone has started to settle into their new routines and is enjoying the new experiences that Haileybury City has to offer in 2023.
It was great to kick off the year with our first HPFC Social Rep meeting, to see a few new faces in the Rep team and to start to work on events for the year. One of these is the Welcome Morning Tea held on the Inside Outside Courts on Tuesday, 14 February.
Thank you to everyone who came on Valentine’s day to share a cuppa and some Valentine’s Day themed treats. A special thank you to the Social Reps who managed the tables and made the new families feel welcome. A great morning was had by all.
This event was a great way to kick off the year and remind us of the importance of having a welcoming School community and the new connections we can make through our wonderful School. Thank you to the Haileybury City Executive Team and staff for making the event possible.
We are excitedly looking forward to our next event — the Haileybury Rooftop Party on Friday, 17 March from 6.30 pm – 9.00 pm. It will be held on our beautiful rooftop with the Flagstaff Gardens providing a magnificent background. Booking will be through the TryBooking link which will be forwarded to you via the myHaileybury app. Keep your eyes on the myHaileybury app for details.
It was also lovely to see new and existing families attending the Parent Information Evenings for the Junior and Middle school on Friday, 3 February. Meeting our children’s new teachers and understanding homework requirements and camp details are important details for the Haileybury community. It was great to personally meet a few new families and to welcome them to our School.
With Saturday morning sport under way, we hope everyone has a lovely time travelling to the new venues and meeting new Haileybury faces from other campuses. This is a great time to make connections and to go outside our City comfort zone.
Have a wonderful few weeks ahead.

HRS welcomes new faces and facilities
At Haileybury Rendall School in Darwin, life has started with energy and excitement. It has been wonderful to welcome our whole HRS community in 2023, especially our new students and families.
We are delighted that the year has commenced so well and are encouraged by how our new students have taken on the challenges of adjusting to life at a new school. As always, help and support for students and their families is only ever a phone call or email away and we genuinely mean it when we say that every student matters every day.
Last week it was also exciting to welcome many new staff to Haileybury Rendall School. Due to the continued growth in the number of students enrolling at our School, many of our new staff began teaching new classes.
Some new staff members have joined us after returning to their home regions and the vast majority of our new staff come from the Northern Territory or Victoria, where the Haileybury brand is strong. Despite national staff shortages, Haileybury’s acclaimed reputation is attracting many quality people to our School.
We have some key staff in new senior roles. Dennis Nowak has become our new Director of Teaching and Learning, replacing Marcia Cross. He will work across all year levels in 2023. Lisa Doyle is our new Head of Junior School and she is already very busy.
Maria Cicchiello is our new Head of Operations and Phil Collins is our new Head of Boarding. Phil has joined us from Wesley College, Perth, but the other three members of staff have been promoted from within HRS. Yes, we are growing our own talent in Darwin!
Over the holiday period, we completed an enormous amount of work to upgrade our facilities and we started some major projects to enhance our School. Some of these projects have included:
An extensive upgrade to the Mayuma cafeteria and surrounding area due to Banyan tree root damage under the floor of the building.
Refurbishment and creation of a new three-year-old room for our ELC. This should open in mid to late February and after that we will create a second four-year-old room, so we are open to new enrolments.
Purchase of 400 new large lockers for Middle School and Senior School students. There was much rejoicing among students when these were finally available last Friday.
Extensive refurbishment of three Junior School classes.
Extensive refurbishment of the Junior School Admin Block.
Extensive refurbishment of six other staff office areas.
Extensive painting across the site, especially in boarding and around the main quadrangle.
More projects are on the way for 2023 and I look forward to keeping you updated.
We are all looking forward to another exciting year.

Campus News
As I spend time in classrooms, I have been impressed by the focus and dedication of our students. Their eagerness to learn and their positive attitude towards their education is quite apparent. Our new staff members have commented on what a pleasure it is to teach at Edrington, due in large part to the excellent behaviour and attitude of our students.
In addition to our students’ academic focus, we had a wonderful turnout at our parent morning teas and dinners in the first weeks of Term 1. These events are a fantastic opportunity for our school community to connect and get to know each other.
We have several more social events planned this term. These events are a way to continue building relationships and strengthening our community. Please find the schedule for these events here.

Building independence and self-care skills
It is wonderful to welcome all our ELC families and to see so many smiling faces in the first few weeks of school. The children have settled in so well and we have enjoyed watching relationships begin to form.
Over the coming weeks, Reception and Pre-Prep children will continue to spend time exploring different learning experiences, getting to know one another, developing positive relationships with the educators in their room and strengthening their understanding of expectations when at school.
The children in Reception and Pre-Prep are encouraged and supported to build their independence and self-care skills from the beginning of the year. This may include having a drink when they require, putting on their shoes and socks, washing their hands and packing their bags independently.
Self-care skills are important as they help children learn planning, sequencing, organisation, resilience and the motor skills or physical control necessary to achieve the tasks. Feeling capable and exploring independence is a crucial component of early childhood and it is important for growth.
Some children are eager to try new things on their own and expand their skill sets, while others require guidance. We encourage you to introduce your child to simple self-care tasks that will allow them to build a foundation of trust in their own abilities. If you would like to follow on from what your child is learning at School, please speak to your child’s teachers.
Junior School
Pancake Day fundraiser
Our wonderful HPFE are making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday which falls on Tuesday, 21 February. If your child would like a pancake, please send them to school with $2 so they can buy one during the day. Gluten free pancakes will also be available.
Thank you so much to all our HPFE volunteers — our students love Pancake Day!
House athletics
ELC and Junior School students will participate in a House Athletics afternoon on Thursday, 9 March at 1.00 pm on the main oval, near Pavilion. Students must wear their sport uniform with House colour top and they can accessorise their House colours to show their House spirit, perhaps with a wig, hat or boa.
Students must have their black sun hat and a water bottle and we also recommend packing sunscreen so students can apply it before heading outside. Parents are welcome to attend and cheer but please remember to stay in the designated spectator area.
Parents may like to also show some House spirit by wearing their child’s House colours. We will run a parents’ race at the end of the day, so bring your running shoes. We look forward to seeing you there.

A night for the girls and …
Girls’ Night In, held last Friday evening, was a huge success! We had girls learning Bollywood dance moves, decorating (and eating) a lot of cake, and they battled it out in party games like Musical Chairs and Pass-the-Parcel.
Most importantly, eight students and three teachers cut their hair to support the World’s Greatest Shave. Thank you to all who donated to this fantastic cause — we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Edrington community.
With your help, we managed to smash our target of $4,000, raising over $6,000! We look forward to presenting the Leukaemia Foundation with these funds.
A day for the boys
Last Wednesday, our Year 7 boys participated in Man Cave. This full-day workshop is designed to support the psychological and emotional development of boys, so they can become healthy young men. Our students participated in the activities with enthusiasm and we look forward to continuing to develop these important skills throughout the year.
Years 5 and 6 got off to a great start with their sports program and the first few inter-school games brought them much success! We remind all students to bring their hats and water bottles during these activities, particularly in the warmer weather.
Finally, we wish the Year 6 boys all the best on their camp to Canberra this week. There was a real sense of excitement in the air as they boarded their bus to the airport this morning!

Adopting an explorer’s mindset is crucial for students as it fosters a love for learning, creativity and critical thinking. Students approach challenges and new information with a sense of curiosity, open-mindedness and determination. They are not afraid to ask questions and take risks and are constantly seeking new opportunities for growth and discovery.
This mindset encourages students to challenge their own assumptions, explore diverse perspectives and develop the confidence to tackle complex problems. In a rapidly changing world, it is increasingly important for students to have the skills and mindset of an explorer so they can adapt, innovate and succeed in the face of uncertainty.

Opening the door to social justice
Each year, Newlands ELC children, educators and families participate in events to help raise funds and resources for selected social justice projects.
One of our ongoing projects is providing toiletries for Open Door Keysborough that gives groceries to local individuals and families in need. With support from Food Bank Victoria, they hand out non-perishable foods and, on occasion, fresh fruit and vegetables.
Unfortunately, toiletries are rarely available through this program. So, during the year, each ELC group donates new toiletry items to Open Door. We thank our ELC families and staff for their donations and dedication to this project.
Natural play
ELC educators recognise the importance of exploring the natural environment and believe that it helps build children’s competence as they experience risk, undertake challenges, develop resilience and enjoy success while negotiating the ELC playgrounds.
The Newlands playground invites children to interact with the creek beds, mud kitchens and sensory play materials and to take part in gardening activities. The children have worm farms to tend and compost bins to maintain. Seedpods, cones, pebbles, shells and small logs also stimulate creativity as the children incorporate them in their play.
Learning Journals
The ELC educators are establishing the children’s Learning Journals to document their learning from the perspective of educators, child and family. The children refer to their Learning Journal to reflect upon their own learning and to demonstrate their connection and belonging within the ELC.
The Journals are highly valued by the parents, as they allow them to review their child’s progress throughout the year and contribute to comments and feedback.
Junior School
Story Dogs
Newlands is excited to welcome a new initiative for 2023. The Story Dogs program helps children relax, try harder and have fun while reading to a calm and friendly dog. It assists children improve their focus and literacy skills while lifting their confidence.
Story Dogs’ mission is to introduce a different dynamic when children read, engaging a student’s social and emotional needs through their interactions with a four-legged friend.
We welcomed Maureen Boaler and Kate Smith from Story Dogs to our weekly assembly and Maureen introduced the program to the students and they met Grace, Kate’s beautiful dog.
From Tuesday, 21 February, several students will begin this new initiative, with different students engaging with Kate and Grace each term.
Year 4 Leadership Assembly
The Year 4 leaders for Semester 1 were inducted into their roles and received their badges at a recent Leadership Assembly. Students were made Homeroom Captains, Arts Captains, Sport Captains, House Captains and Social Justice Captains.
These Year 4 students are now the role models of the School and will assist in presenting awards at assembly, organising structured activities for younger students and they will take on many other jobs.
The Semester 1 Leaders proudly acknowledged their leadership oath and will now do their best to fulfill their responsibilities for the rest of the semester.
Our Year 5 students had a fantastic trip to Phillip Island. Every student demonstrated resilience and an explorer’s mindset as they negotiated each challenge and experience presented to them. Flying fox, archery, surfing, koala walks and so much more make this one of the highlights of the Year 5 experience.
Our Year 6 cohort are very excited for their excursion to Canberra. Students travel to and from Canberra by plane and participate in hands-on activities, guided tours and educational programs.
Students will visit Questacon, the National Gallery of Australia, the Australian Institute of Sport, the Electoral Education Centre, CSIRO Discovery Centre, Parliament House, the Deep Space Tracking Station, the National Dinosaur Museum and the Australian War Memorial.
BMS: Monday, 20 February – Friday, 24 February
GMS: Monday, 27 February – Friday, 3 March
We are so pleased our students can visit Canberra again and we wish them a wonderful tour.
Year 7 immunisations
Our Year 7 immunisations will take place on Thursday, 23 February. All students have received forms from their Homeroom Teacher and must return them prior to this date.
Year 8 Induction Program
Year 8 students enjoyed two very active Induction Days to welcome them to the 2023 school year. The focus of the program was leadership, as all our Year 8 students are considered leaders of our Middle School.
The first activity involved the GMS and BMS participating in a combined workshop to form connections and discuss social challenges. During an excursion to the Melbourne Cable Park, students worked in teams and tested themselves physically and mentally by completing aquatic and climbing activities.
Betsy from Tripod Education spent time with the Year 8 students exploring their understanding of what leadership is, how it connects to their values and behaviours, and how they can choose to lead in their own lives to make a meaningful difference and achieve a positive impact.
We wish all Year 8 students the very best with their leadership endeavours for 2023.
Opportunities galore!
During the first week of term, Years 5 to 7 students discovered the opportunities available in Haileybury’s Curious Minds program at the 2023 Curious Minds Exhibition. Students explored booths and displays showcasing the open or select entry programs on offer. Program leaders were also on hand to answer questions.
Among the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs, the Newlands Digitech Explorers, F1 in Schools and the Science Talent Search programs proved to be very popular.
The Haileybury Hive, $20 Boss and Tournament of the Minds programs were favourites in the LEAP (Literature, Enterprise, Arts and Politics) programs. Students were challenged to answer questions about the programs on display and entered a competition to win prizes.
Our lucky winners were:
Year 5 – Zoey Bhatt
Year 6 – Andre Crouch
Year 7 – Josh Mudalige

In the first few weeks of Term 1, it has been impressive to see our students orient themselves to our key learning technologies and build the skills they need to communicate effectively online. Using Teams has been new to many students and our teachers have supported them to utilise collaborative tools, such as whiteboards and OneNote, to make live classes highly interactive.
Students and parents also have access to myFeedback, a live dashboard that displays students’ weekly self-paced learning tasks and upcoming assignments. This allows students to visualise their progress through their course and keep on top of due dates. This tool will be essential for students in managing their own learning and building their personalised schedules.
Meeting our students
For teachers, it has been delightful to meet and get to know students over the first few weeks of the year. With students joining live classes from around Victoria and, in some cases, from around the world, we have loved hearing each student’s unique story and getting an insight into their life beyond school.
We look forward to sharing stories of our students’ achievements and adventures throughout the year.

Founders Day Assembly
Our 2023 Founders Day Assembly was a great way to enable current Haileyburians to reflect on how the School has become the large and diverse institution it is today. The assembly featured our School Captains and Vice Captains who shared information about the different generations of Haileybury founders and how they have contributed to the School’s growth.
Our recipient of the OHA Medal was David Gruen (OHA 1971). If you would like more information on Mr Gruen or the many other activities of the Old Haileyburian’s Association, please go to the OHA website.
Haileybury Rendall student leaders visit
It was wonderful to welcome the Year 12 student leaders from our Haileybury Rendall campus. They were accompanied by their Head of Senior School, Wendy Pickering-Tyers.
The 13 students began their visit at the City campus and then travelled to our Berwick or Keysborough campuses to meet their peers. They joined in academic classes, attended the Founders’ Day Assembly and participated in sports training.
They also met with CEO|Principal, Derek Scott, to discuss their ideas on how to build further connections between the campuses.
It was a short but fruitful stay with meaningful connections made between the students from the different campuses and these will hopefully continue throughout their final year.
A huge thank you to all those families who welcomed the HRS students into their homes during their stay in Melbourne.
Nihon University High School visit
For over 25 years we have partnered with our sister school in Japan, Nihon University High School. This partnership sees our VCE Japanese students travel to Sapporo to participate in an intensive study excursion and a group of Nihon University High School students come to us.
This week, we welcomed 84 Japanese students of whom 30 are staying with Haileybury students and their families to experience life in an Australian school and homestay. They have attended classes with their homestay brothers and sisters and will attend School sport tomorrow to experience the Australian APS competition across different sports.
We are thrilled to welcome our Japanese students back to Haileybury and look forward to continuing this strong relationship.
A reminder that Parent–Teacher Interviews will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, 7 March. Online bookings are open. To book your interview, please access via our myHaileybury app.
School photos will be taken on Tuesday, 21 and Wednesday, 22 February. Details have been sent to families via the myHaileybury app.

Top Class is part of the VCE Season of Excellence managed by Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. The Season showcases work produced by outstanding VCE students who completed performing or visual arts, technology, design, or research studies in 2022. Events are presented at Melbourne’s major cultural venues, alongside associated education programs.
Congratulations to Michaela Davidson (Year 12) who will be performing her VCE Skills on Tuesday, 7 March at Concert 1 at 10.00 am.
Inside every adolescent brain, 86 billion neurons connect and collide to produce the most frustrating, chaotic and exhilarating changes. Brainstorm is a unique theatrical investigation into how the teenage brain works and why it is designed by evolution to be the way it is.
The play’s script comes with some structure but the content and dialogue have been developed by Jane Marshall and the City student cast to provide insights into the contemporary teenage experience.
Performed at the iconic Chapel Off Chapel, this promises to be a theatrical experience to remember. The 2022 City play sold out within days, so get in quick to avoid disappointment.
Top Class 2023 is a series of concerts featuring outstanding students who completed VCE Performing Arts subjects. Two students from Haileybury Dance and Theatre programs have been accepted into the 2023 Top Class Season at the Recital Centre and Malthouse Theatre in March.
In total, seven of our theatre, drama and dance students were invited to audition after achieving an A+ in their performance exam. We are very proud of our high achieving and creative students.
In VCE Dance, students choreograph, refine and perform two solo works that are presented to a panel of assessors and each contributes 25% of their total study score. The first solo work that students develop is a skills-based solo that showcases a dancer’s physical skills and ability to manipulate time, shape and energy throughout their choreography.
Congratulations to Michaela Davidson for achieving a perfect score for her 2022 skills-based solo and for being invited to perform at Top Class on Tuesday, 7 March at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
In VCE Theatre Studies, Enya Lucas will present her monologue from Our Country’s Good at Malthouse Theatre on Thursday, 16 March. Each student develops a six-minute monologue and two-minute interpretation statement. Enya chose to create a bold and imaginative interpretation inspired by the experience of convict women in 1788 and by the contemporary work of Emily Goddard, an Australian writer and performer.
Being a participant in music making is a truly special experience. It is a form of self-expression that allows the individual to connect with their emotions, creativity and with others in a unique way. The pathway to creating high quality music is a journey that requires dedication, patience and flair. However, the result of prolonged creative and technical growth is always worth it when a performance comes to life and is shared and celebrated with an audience.
Last Monday, the Performing and Visual Arts were celebrated at Haileybury’s inaugural Haileybury Top Class. Drawing on the concept of the VCAA Season of Excellence Series, which recognises the most outstanding work from dance, drama, music and the Visual Arts, Haileybury Top Class showcased some of the best VCE work from our Visual and Performing Arts students in the 2022 VCE.
The audience was dazzled by the skill and talent on display during the 80-minute experience.
The Arts have the power to move us, to evoke memories and to connect us with one another. Being an active participant in the Arts is a way to bring those feelings and experiences to life, and to share them.
It’s a privilege to be part of that at Haileybury and it is something to be celebrated and cherished. As educators, we are fortunate to have front row seats and to see amazing talent emerge before our eyes and ears.
Rod Marshall Director of Performing Arts & Head of Haileybury Music
Visual Arts
A celebration of talent
The inaugural Top Class evening showcase was an inspiring and joyous celebration of the incredible talent of our 2022 creative graduates. It left everyone who attended in awe of the amazing achievements, performances and creations of Haileybury’s young people across the Performing and Visual Arts.
Representing the Visual Arts through presentations of their final works were Ashley Tonelli (Studio Arts), LiahLiao (Visual Communication Design), Jacob Anderson (Media), and Bailey Yates (Product Design and Technology). It was wonderful to see so many current students in the audience being inspired by these accomplished artists, directors and designers.
All about Product Design and Technology
Unit 1 VCE Product Design and Technology sees students explore and apply methods to sustainably redevelop products. In Term 1A, students design, develop and make a storage box using a range of critical and creative design thinking techniques.
This preliminary design task allows students to learn how to correctly and safely use tools, equipment and materials including sustainably sourced timbers such as reclaimed Red Gum and Victorian Ash.
To individualise their box designs, students use decorative techniques including intarsia, fret work, inlay and pyrography that combine hand woodworking skills and laser technologies. Students then apply the design process to re-design and develop a sustainable lamp as their main Unit 1 folio and production task.

Pipes & Drums
Pipes & Drums information night
The Pipes & Drums information night was a resounding success with over 100 people attending at Berthon Hall, Newlands. The night was an opportunity for P&D families to learn about the upcoming Pipes & Drums season and to hear from the Parent Association about their plans.
The night was led by myself and Susan Carrolo, President of the Friends of the Pipes & Drums, but was opened by our new C Band who set the tone with a rousing performance that showcased their new skills and dedication to the art of pipe and drum music. They were met with enthusiastic applause from parents, most of whom witnessed their child’s debut performance.
Attendees received information about different competitions and events and learned the intricate details of how to put on the Pipes & Drums uniform. The Parent Association discussed the many ways in which parents can support the Pipes & Drums program through volunteering, joining the uniform inspection crew, or simply attending performances.
We look forward to the exciting season ahead and the many opportunities in the 2023 Pipe Band Competition Season.

Haileybury Foundation 2022 review
We look forward to the release of the 2022 Haileybury Foundation Impact Report that
will be available to Haileybury community members at the end of March.
The Impact Report details the significant differences that are being made for our students through scholarships and funding provided for buildings and the library by the Haileybury community. The report will name all Haileybury Foundation donors in 2022 and showcase the projects that are transforming lives.
2022 was a record-breaking year for the Haileybury Foundation. Our Scholarship Fund recorded the highest ever donations, thanks largely in part to the successful Giving Day held in August.
Additionally, our Building Fund continues to deliver interesting and impactful projects for students across all four campuses. It received the second largest amount of donations in history. This is largely thanks to our parents who so generously contribute to our Voluntary Building Fund on a quarterly basis. We value your contributions and look forward to showcasing the exceptional quality of our buildings via the Impact Report.
Our donors are changing lives forever, regardless of the size of the gift.
All gifts to Haileybury Foundation are tax deductible.
We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2022 OHA Medal is Dr David Gruen AO (OH 1971).
The Old Haileyburians Association Medal is awarded to an Old Haileyburian in recognition and appreciation of their exceptional achievement in their field of endeavour.

David was previously the Deputy Secretary, Economic and Australia’s G20 Sherpa at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Before joining the Department in September 2014, he was the Executive Director of the Macroeconomic Group at the Australian Treasury.
He joined the Treasury in January 2003 and before this he was Head of the Economic Research Department at the Reserve Bank of Australia from 1998 to 2002.
Before joining the Reserve Bank, David worked as a research scientist in the Research School of Physical Sciences at the Australian National University.
With financial support from a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship, David was visiting lecturer in the Economics Department and the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University from August 1991 to June 1993. He holds PhD degrees in Physiology from Cambridge University, England, and in Economics from the Australian National University.
David was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (General Division) in 2022 for his distinguished service to public administration, economic research, business and education.

We again congratulate David on this significant honour!
Founders Day Assembly
The Founders Day Assembly was held on Tuesday, 7 February in Aikman Hall at Keysborough.
This assembly shares the history and tradition of our great School, is a terrific celebration of community and sees the awarding of the OHA Medal. Although Dr Gruen, the fifteenth winner, was unable to attend, he recorded an inspirational video acceptance speech for the students.
We were thrilled that a Life Governor, former OHA Medallists and OHA Presidents, and members from the Class of 1983 who were celebrating their 40-Year reunion were honoured on stage at this special assembly.
We are looking forward to presenting David with his medal in person in the coming months.
Class of 1983 40-Year Reunion
It was wonderful to see the Class of 1983 celebrate their 40-Year reunion at The Deck in Brighton earlier this month. It was lovely to see them sharing stories and reminiscing. Thanks to everyone involved for staying connected.
Congratulations to Issy Stewart (Year 11) who has been selected for the Victoria Metro U18 Women’s basketball squad. KeyaanBongso (Year 11) and Oscar Humble (Year 12) have been selected for the Victoria Metro U18 Men’s team.
They will compete in the National U18 Basketball Championships in Brisbane from Sunday, 9 April until Sunday, 16 April. We wish these players all the very best.

CEO | Principal's Report - Issue 03

Early Learning Centre

Dr David Gruen AO was appointed Australian Statistician in December, 2019 and as Agency Head of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, he is accountable for the function and operation of the ABS.
He joins an illustrious list of Old Haileyburians who have been awarded the OHA’s most prestigious award. Please click here to watch his acceptance speech.
National swimming champion
Tommy Lane (Year 12) is continuing his open water swimming success by winning the 2023 Boy’s 18-year-old 5km Australian Open Water Championships. Tommy completed the event in a time of 55 minutes 8.08 seconds.
Due to his wonderful success, he is now likely to be selected for elite swimming programs. Tommy attributes his success to Kelly Stubbins, Haileybury Swimming Coach, and her hard work, skill and dedication. Well done, Tommy!
