Presenting new Year 12s with their tie and badge is an opportunity to discuss goals and plans for the year ahead.
Online news from Haileybury
Presenting new Year 12s with their tie and badge is an opportunity to discuss goals and plans for the year ahead.
Each year, one of my favourite activities is presenting every new Year 12 (the 2024 cohort) with their Year 12 tie and badge and taking a moment to have a conversation with each of them about the year ahead.
There are 496 Year 12 students on Haileybury’s Melbourne campuses this year and I enjoy hearing what they are looking forward to, what they have enjoyed about their schooling, what challenges they have faced and how they have overcome them. I am currently about two-thirds of the way through the presentations and conversations.
As you would expect, a few clear themes emerge. Firstly, students overwhelmingly tell me they feel fortunate to have such great teachers and that they feel confident about the year ahead because of this. Haileybury staff are focused, committed, caring professionals and this comes through very strongly in the respect shown to them by the students.
Secondly, the camaraderie of the year level group, House and campus comes through strongly. We all like to belong as part of a group and it is very clear that a benefit of Haileybury’s unique structure is that there are layers at the School which keep students strongly connected.
As one student commented to me: “I really like our year group, I am excited about being involved in all the House activities and I love my campus friends.”
Thirdly, I am so impressed by the reflection so many students have about their own learning. Often, they tell me about their path through to Year 12 and how they have improved because of self-reflection and a determination to do the best they can.
As one student commented: “I have been thinking about how I haven’t always put forward my best effort but am really determined this year. I feel I am improving, and I have to own my own choices, including the subjects, and make it work.”
Fourthly, I am always encouraged by how much the students enjoy the extra-curricular activities. Sport and fitness activities are important for many, as well as music and drama, and the language trips to Japan and France are always a point of discussion. The House activities and events are also popular and nearly all students look forward to the two Year 12 formals.
Finally, I love hearing about where students are looking to head after school. Some, with great certainty, have a clear path mapped out but most are still thinking it through and willing to keep an open mind as they prepare for post-school life.
These are a fine group of young people who are in the very capable hands of outstanding professional educators. I wish them all good luck for the year ahead.

On Thursday, 9 November, 300 Prep-Year 6 students from all four of Haileybury’s Melbourne campuses participated in the 2023 Haileybury Dance Gala.
The end of year dance gala is always a memorable and special event on our School calendar and a chance to celebrate our after-school dance students and their fabulous work throughout the year.
The Prep-Year 6 after-school dance class students worked tirelessly on multiple items for the dance gala evening which explored various dance genres such as jazz, hip hop, lyrical and theatrical. The night was colourful, energetic and fun filled. All students had a wonderful time, beaming with pride as they came off stage. Congratulations to all students who were involved and thank you to all parents and friends who came along to support the event
The coordination of such a large program, which runs across four campuses can be complex, but the success is largely due to the hard work, time and efforts of our fabulous campus coordinators and coaches. These members of staff and past Haileybury students are very much invested in their classes and students and do a plethora of work each week to ensure the very best outcomes. Their dedication, time and effort is greatly appreciated and it certainly showed on Thursday evening.
We look forward to the after-school dance classes continuing in 2024. Enrolments will open in late January. Please check the myHaileybury app for details.

Haileybury’s second annual Oscars ceremony was held on Thursday, 9 November to celebrate the year that was in our Senior School co-curricular theatre program. The afternoon was organised by our 2023 Drama Captains, Thanh, Laura, Harry and Genevieve.
The event included a whole group dance-off, some beautifully written speeches celebrating the theatre family, lots of yummy food, heaps of fun interactive games and a standing ovation for our departing leaders.
We are delighted to celebrate the year that was and several outstanding productions and events in the co-curricular theatre calendar including Brainstorm (SS City Show), Hard Candy (Theatre Studies Play), The SpongeBob Musical (SS Musical), Beware... For I am Fearless (SS Play), as well as the Keysborough and City VCE Drama ensemble open nights.
The theatre family is a special one and it was a great night as we witnessed the community coming together to sing, dance, eat and shed a few happy tears for a year of great memories.

Head of Drama and Theatre Studies
The Haileybury Music department has been buzzing with activity over the past two weeks, showcasing the talent and dedication of our students across the School.
In the Senior School, Music Performance students successfully completed their final VCE Unit 4 Music Theory exams. These exams cover three key aspects of Music Theory: analysis of recorded music, aural perception and music notation. We all eagerly await the results, scheduled for release on Monday, 11 December. Best of luck to our Unit 4 students!
At the other end of the Haileybury music journey, recently, Junior School students were centre stage at whole school string concerts in Aikman Hall. These high energy concerts provided our youngest musicians with the opportunity to perform at large-scale events, often after just 10 months of instrumental instruction. Witnessing the expressions on the faces of our young performers as they step onto the stage for the first time is a sight to behold. The concert series featured over 600 students and was a remarkable showcase of talent.
In the Middle School, our concert bands, choirs and string orchestras have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming Speech Night performances that begin at the end of next week. These performances, held in front of capacity audiences, offer Middle School musicians a chance to shine as they proudly present their musical achievements to Tom Poulton, Chairman of the School Council, CEO | Principal Derek Scott, the official party and their parents and peers.
The Speech Night series will conclude on Tuesday, 5 December, culminating in a special event where Haileybury’s most academically recognised students attend their final awards ceremony as graduating Year 12 students. Music will play a prominent role at the Senior School Speech Night celebration.
Wrapping up the year, the Music department’s final performance, Haileybury Carols, takes place on Friday, 8 December at Scots’ Church in Collins Street in the heart of Melbourne. I encourage as many families as possible to join us to celebrate the festive season in a culturally diverse manner that provides a fitting end to the school year.
Rod Marshall
Director of Performing Arts & Head of Haileybury Music
Excitement is building as we gear up for the Senior Art Exhibition, a celebration of the incredible talent and hard work of our graduating students. Behind the scenes, our Visual Arts department is putting the final touches to what promises to be an unforgettable exhibition.
The exhibition opening will be on Tuesday, 21 November at 6.00 pm in the Sholto Black building. Join us and mingle with the artists and be among the first to witness the impressive array of creations.
In an era that values innovation and creativity, the arts play a pivotal role in shaping well-rounded individuals. Our Senior Art Exhibition goes beyond showcasing visual creativity; it is a testament to the vital role the arts play in our students’ development.
This year, we are proud to feature works spanning VCE Media, Visual Communication and Design, Product Design Technology and Art Making and Exhibiting. The variety of work reflects each student’s unique perspectives and ability to communicate ideas through different mediums. Displaying this rich tapestry of creativity emphasises the interdisciplinary nature of the arts and the profound impact it has on shaping the future leaders and thinkers emerging from our School.
Join us in celebrating the remarkable artistic achievements of our seniors and supporting the thriving arts culture at Haileybury.
Ngaire Thomson
Head of Visual Arts Senior School
As the year comes to a close, the Haileybury Pipes & Drums are gearing up for an exciting and busy season of performances. One of our most cherished traditions is playing at the graduations across all campuses of Haileybury, including at the graduation of our online campus, Haileybury Pangea — a Pipes & Drums first.
It is a momentous occasion for the graduating students and their families and we are honoured to provide the soundtrack to their special day.
As we wrap up this year, we are also beginning our search for the 2024 Senior A band leaders. The Pipes & Drums have several leadership opportunities within each band and students are encouraged to apply. Each role carries the responsibilities of being a leading member of the program and the expectations of peers, teachers and staff. These leaders play a crucial role in guiding our band and ensuring we continue to excel in our performances and competitions.
Speaking of competitions, we are already hard at work getting our new material underway for next year. We are constantly striving to improve and push the boundaries of our performance and although we now have a world championship under our belt, we are committed to reaching new heights in our students’ musical capabilities.
As we prepare to bid farewell to another incredible year of music and performances, we are also looking forward to the exciting challenges and opportunities that the future holds for the Haileybury Pipes & Drums.
Lincoln Hilton
Director, Pipes & Drums
It is breath-taking to see so many contributions under our Christmas tree in the Administration foyer. I thank families for their generosity. There are still a few days left for donations to be accepted ready for distribution to Anglicare prior to Christmas Day.
William (Year 8) has been accepted as a Young Ambassador at the Shrine of Remembrance for 2024. With his keen interest in World War II, general war and aviation history, William has been a member of the Winjeels student group at Moorabbin Air Museum since 2021.
On the eve of UNICEF’s World Children’s Day, with two Young Ambassador 2023 students, William laid a wreath during the weekly Last Post ceremony. This service includes bugle calls and piper, the Shrine Guard in historic uniform, the recital of the Ode and lowering of the flags.
We congratulate William on his appointment and wish him all the best in this prestigious role in 2024.
We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday, 29 January. Further details will be sent during the holidays regarding arrangements. We ask that students arrive by 8.25 am on this day and bring all items from their booklists.
2023 has been a fantastic year at Castlefield. I thank our outstanding students for their dedication to their learning and for their connectedness across the School. They have ensured that this year will be remembered richly in Haileybury’s history.
I thank our parents for their continued support and involvement, and our staff for the exceptional passion and care they devote to our students each and every day.
Please enjoy the festive season and have a safe and pleasant holiday break with your family. I look forward to our continued association in 2024.
A reminder for families that South Road is the preferred pick-up and drop-off location for students in Junior and Middle Schools and the roundabout is an efficient way to collect your child. Staff are on duty before and after school to help children remain safe within our grounds.
For Senior School students, South Road is the only drop-off and pick-up area for parents who drive their child to school. We encourage older students to walk, ride or take public transport, rather than being driven to school. The PTV planner can be found here.
Thank you for supporting our ELC community. How wonderful it was to see the children become shopkeepers and confidently encouraging families to buy, serving their customers and keeping note of how many tea towels were sold. It was a record sale and lots of fun too!
During your child’s class party this week you will receive your child’s Learning Journal. This is a celebration of your child’s achievements throughout the year and evidence of all the beautiful learning that has occurred.
The journals have taken considerable time and effort to put together by the teaching teams and represent our commitment to your child’s learning, development and wellbeing. Not only are these a lovely keepsake, they also act as a report to share with your family and future educators.
It is very special that the children can relate to the Learning Journals and talk through their own learning and demonstrate their connection and sense of belonging to the ELC. We trust you will enjoy sharing this book with your child and revisiting fond memories throughout the year.
Thank you all for your time and contributions to our ELC over the year. We have had a very special year with you all and look forward to seeing you at your child’s class party and Learning Journal celebration at 1.00 pm.
With the key concepts of change and cause being explored in their Inquiry unit this term, the Year 1 students headed to TwistED Science for their excursion.
‘We loved making the big bubbles and creating our own “Cloud in a Jar” experiment.’ - Mia and Matisse
‘My highlight was going into the massive part of TwistED Science and exploring the pictures in the lab.’ - Thomas
‘My favourite was the blue air blower with the ball because I got a goal’ - Alfred
‘I loved the photo shoot and blowing bubbles. I got to make a ginormous bubble that I could fit my whole head in.’ - Nina
The process of moving to the next stage of schooling is a big deal! At Haileybury, we ensure each step is considered and well planned. ELC Pre-Prep children visit the Junior School in formal transition sessions and incidentally throughout the week.
As they move through East Quad on the way to the library, they may be stopped by staff or students, or have a quick play in the playground. All these experiences help them feel comfortable in their new spaces.
Similarly, our Year 4 students spend time in their respective Middle Schools, whether for an assembly or a Q&A session. They too can get excited about the next step as they know a little bit more about what’s to come.
Year 4 House leaders ran their final Junior School assembly for the year with a focus on play. As the third element in our ‘Care, Learn, Play’ motto, they encouraged all children to play with respect and kindness, and to show fairness when making up game rules.
House Leaders have helped our students to be great players across the year by leading recess and lunchtime clubs and being role models for our junior students.
As the year draws to a close, Castlefield is a hive of activity with numerous events that celebrate, acknowledge and allow our students to be involved in new experiences. At Castlefield Speech Night on Friday, 1 December, we were able to reflect, acknowledge and celebrate the year that was in Middle School, with students coming together to foster the community spirit and connections at Castlefield.
Our uniform is a very important part of our School and the way in which our students present each day. With the holidays coming up and students growing, please ensure your child has appropriate school shoes ready to begin Term 1 next year.
Middle School students are required to wear black leather shoes — either school lace-up shoes, business shoes or T-bars. Runners are not permitted.
Also, a reminder that students must wear their blazer home with their school uniform, or their sports jacket home with their sports uniform, unless they are advised this is not required on the day due to weather conditions.

Head of Castlefield (Brighton)
On behalf of the Haileybury Parents & Friends Castlefield, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who generously donated their time to support the HPFC this year. Your contributions have made a significant impact, and we are truly thankful.
As the year draws to a close, please be aware that the SHUS will be closed until the start of Term 1. We look forward to reconnecting with familiar faces and welcoming new volunteers in the coming year.
Wishing each and every one of you a joyous and rejuvenating summer holiday. May it be filled with relaxation, laughter and cherished moments with loved ones. We can’t wait to see you again in the upcoming year.

As part of the the Victorian Government’s Education Mission to China, Haileybury recently hosted a delegation from Study Melbourne.
The delegation was led by the Hon John Brumby AO, Chair of Victoria’s International Education Advisory Council and Chancellor of La Trobe University, and Caroline Hartnett who is Acting Director International Education and Study Melbourne. Visitors also included members from the higher education sector and government education and training organisations.
Our CEO | Principal, Derek Scott, hosted a round table discussion on topics including international education, student exchange, teaching research, and strengthening the education collaboration with Haileybury Tianjin. Our Executive Principal, Andrew McAree, gave a presentation highlighting the achievements of our School over the last 10 years.
It was wonderful to see Louise Elleston from Haileybury City Campus and Barbara Zhu from Haileybury Tianjin, both Year 3 Science teachers, embarking on an exciting collaboration between their Junior Schools.
During Barbara’s recent Haileybury Melbourne training, the two teachers shared ideas for engaging their students in Year 3 Science, and how to align their lesson plans to make the most of the collaboration. It was great to see students from Haileybury China and Haileybury Melbourne engaging in some scientific conversation.
Recently, Haileybury Tianjin had the honour of hosting 200 students in the regional round of the famous ASDAN Business Simulation Competition. Over a two-day weekend, approximately 25 teams from all over China entered the competition at Haileybury.
The ASDAN competition is based on professional simulated business IT systems and consists of three sessions: five rounds of operations, two rounds of project presentations and an auction trading. The team that produces the most profit is announced as the winner. The competition gave all students a wonderful experience. They have learned about unity and cooperation, communication and negotiation, and they have gained a better understanding of the significance of hard work. Congratulations to the three Haileybury teams that won a silver and two bronze awards, and we wish them luck as they compete in the finals early next year.

Everyone loves the magic of City campus and the Storium was a perfect expression of the imagination and creativity that is alive in our vertical campus. The brainchild of Jane Marshall (known as Miss Birdwhistle) and her trusty sidekick, Philippa Bell (Miss Lovejoy), as well as their dedicated colleagues Rebecca Frith, Andrew Weatherill and Ed Schaepman, and with the expert help of Stewart Bell (Mr Peabody), the magic of the Storium existed for two weeks at City campus.
Our ELC to Year 8 City students were immersed in the enchanted world of the Storium — an alternative universe that was an incredible example of how Haileybury City fosters a love of literature and nurtures literacy skills in all students.
A visit to the Storium began with the delivery of a mysterious invitation that magically arrived at each Homeroom on the morning of their visit. Surprised students and staff followed instructions until they reached their destination in a secret location on our Arts floor.
Once inside the enigmatic space, thanks to the turn of a key that revealed a bookcase with a hidden entry, students guessed and hypothesised about what was occurring, allowing their creative thoughts to grow.
Following this interactive experience, students entered a dynamic writing space and, under the guidance of a character from the Storium, began crafting a story. This wonderful interdisciplinary learning opportunity incorporated elements of Drama and English. Students finished their narrative in their English classes, and we look forward to publishing these and putting them on the shelves of the City library.
The Storium demonstrates our commitment to enriching and extending our students’ learning until the last day of every term and year. We remind our families that leave is best taken in our generous school holidays. Any requests for leave outside these times must be directed to the Head of Campus well in advance. Our staff constantly plan wonderful learning opportunities for our students, as every minute of learning counts. Please ensure you download the Term Dates from the Haileybury website for 2024 before booking your holidays.
Wishing you all a happy holiday and wonderful new year. We look forward to welcoming you back to City campus in 2024.
With our City campus located at the heart of the Arts capital, it is no wonder children in the ELC love to express themselves creatively. Music and dance are a feature of our outdoor space as children move and play outside on our Terrace, and our beautiful gathering circle is a vibrant example of history and story told through art.
Within each room in ELC, the Arts and the skills these experiences help develop are nurtured and fostered. Reception children are creating insects out of plasticine, while Pre-Prep have been encouraged to incorporate intricate flower patterns using fine lines to create vibrant watercolour backgrounds.
As we draw closer to the end of the year, we thank you for joining us at our End of Year Celebration of Learning to showcase our learning journals and a musical performance.
It was wonderful to celebrate the children’s growth and learning and we thank our families for working in partnership with Haileybury City throughout the year.
Junior School students engaged in a memorable Learn to Swim program at the University of Victoria (VU) Footscray campus. This initiative underscored the dedication of City campus to nurture industry partnerships within our distinctive geographical setting.
Expert swim instructors led the lessons which integrated into the Physical Education curriculum. Focused on stroke development, water safety, rescue skills, floatation and pool entry/exit techniques, the program provided a well-rounded aquatic education. This hands-on experience not only honed the students’ swimming abilities but reinforced the importance of water competency as an integral aspect of their overall physical education.
The 2023 Peace Pole Ceremony at City Campus was attended by esteemed members of the Rotary Club of North Melbourne, solidifying their strong relationship with our school community and our joint pursuit of recognising and promoting global peace.
The ceremony was held at the Inside Out courts on Batman Street, where our prominent Peace Pole proudly stands. Each Year 3 student delivered a heartfelt statement on the importance of peace, preparing and rehearsing diligently in the lead-up to the ceremony.
More than 250,000 Peace Poles in approximately 200 countries symbolise a shared wish for a peaceful world and the event served as a powerful reminder of our global interconnectedness. The ceremony’s conclusion echoed some profound sentiments including, “If there is to be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighbours.”
On Tuesday, 21 November we looked to the future with Up Day. This was an opportunity for our young people to become accustomed to their teachers, classmates and their new school if they are joining Haileybury for the first time in 2024.
Levels 4 and 5 were buzzing as students had fun, developed connections and gained a better understanding of what next year will look like. The boys and girls had a range of experiences which included visiting our Inside Out court, going to Flagstaff Gardens at lunchtime and for Physical Education classes and travelling between floors for specialist classes in Music, Art and Computer Science. They were involved in a Science workshop and participated in core subjects such as English, Humanities, Mathematics and Languages.
A brilliant day was had by all, and the excitement continues to build for the 2024 school year.
To wrap up their Humanities studies, our Year 5 students embarked on a journey to Melbourne’s Immigration Museum and the Ian Potter Centre at NGV Australia. At the Immigration Museum, students participated in a hands-on workshop and delved into the stories of settlement and migration through a myriad of objects and artifacts.
At NGV Australia, the students went on an artistic exploration of Australia’s past. Through the lenses of visual analysis and storytelling, the boys and girls interacted with the creative expressions of various periods in Australia’s history. This experience brought valuable historical knowledge and helped foster a deeper sense of empathy and understanding for the diverse narratives and identities that have shaped our history.
On Thursday, 30 November, Year 8 students attended the Dark Matters exhibition at The University of Melbourne’s Science Gallery as part of their Physics studies in Science. The exhibition, presented in conjunction with CERN and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics, explores the mysteries of dark matter, the exploration of the unknown in science, and the limits of human imagination.
Students enjoyed the merging of Science and Art as they were presented with artistic interpretations of subatomic particles, four dimensional spacetime, and CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.
Haileybury City Science teacher, Caleb Street, presented a special ‘activation’ of a Mystery Box — an interactive experience where students were invited to intuit the contents of an enigmatic black box before a surprising and miraculous reveal.

HPF City ran an extremely successful pop-up second-hand uniform shop on Up Day. It was very popular, with many new parents coming in and securing a bargain or two.
With the end of the year approaching, this is a perfect time to sort out those outgrown and no longer needed uniform items. You can deliver them to the collection bins for sale at the second-hand uniform shop. To assist families, the bins can be found at City Reception at King Street until Friday, 15 December 2023.
Reception re-opens from Thursday, 4 January 2024 and will gladly accept items until Monday, 22 January 2024. More information can be found on the myHaileybury app. Please email us here should you have any difficulties locating the form.
It feels like yesterday that we were starting the 2023 academic year, and here we are at the end! Thankfully, 2023 has seen the return to academic routines post the COVID-19 disruptions which has resulted in academic growth for all students. It has been a truly remarkable year with fabulous camps, artistic and sporting accomplishments and, most importantly, happy students.
Thank you to Caroline Merrick, Robert Johnson and Haileybury City’s wonderful Exec team. It has been a wonderful 12 months for HPF City to work alongside you on HPF City’s mission of fundraising and community engagement.
A big thank you also to Gabe Di Martino and his team who are behind the set up for each event and do all the heavy lifting. Without this team, many events would not happen. Your help and assistance are very much appreciated.
A huge thank you to the extremely dedicated teaching staff who inspire our children to learn every day. We are truly grateful for the work you do with our children each day.
On behalf of HPF City, we wish all our families, students and the Haileybury City staff a wonderful festive season. We hope everyone gets to have a bit of a break, takes some time to focus on family and enjoys our fabulous Australian summer.
Wishing you a lovely Christmas holiday break and a superb start to 2024.

President, Haileybury Parents & Friends City
We have been so grateful for the generosity of the HRS community throughout 2023.
Through the pages of our newsletters, we have regularly acknowledged and celebrated the wonderful fundraising efforts of our HRS families. Whether it be for Shave for a Cure, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, victims of natural disasters or cancer research, our students have come prepared with gold coins in hand — thanks to parents and guardians, ready to make incredible contributions.
The inaugural International Women’s Day Breakfast in March saw over 100 attendees enjoy the morning with local talent, Amy Hetherington, who generously shared her journey to success and entertained with her comedic wit. The event raised $2,000 for the Northern Territory Cancer Council.
Most recently, our third annual Trivia and Auction Night in October was the largest yet with around 200 people enjoying radio DJ and host Sarah Pasilick’s enthusiasm and good humour. Again, the HRS community showed their true colours with almost $15,000 being raised for School improvements.
We must also not forget the immeasurable gift of time with Sony Camp being just one example of our students and staff volunteering their time to provide respite to parents of children with high needs.
Our final callout for 2023 was for donations of a different kind during our inaugural Wellbeing Week from Monday, 13 November to Friday, 17 November. Our students and families focused on Foodbank’s aim to raise 100,000 meals for households in need across the NT this Christmas with donations of canned goods and dry goods. This food drive has been a great success.
Meanwhile our staff are supporting Balanced Choice Program’s Christmas Hamper Project with donations of non-perishable items. This gives young people in detention who are unable to be with their families at Christmas an opportunity to express their love and gratitude by writing a card for loved ones and preparing a hamper for delivery.
Social justice is one of Haileybury Rendall School’s highly valued pillars and we sincerely thank our entire community from ELC through to Year 12 for reinforcing the importance of service and contribution to others through your big hearts.
Andrew McGregor
Principal, Haileybury Rendall School
Sincere thanks to our students, staff and families for the way we have all worked together to ensure our campus is a wonderful community. I am incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and dedication to their learning, as well as the way in which they treat each other kindly and with respect.
Thank you to the parents for their steadfast support and assistance in making Edrington a warm and welcoming place for all. I am also incredibly grateful to all staff for their tireless efforts in providing an outstanding education for the students, for their collegiality, and for their commitment to our School.
I wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season with family and friends and I look forward to seeing you in 2024.
This year’s Art Exhibition was an outstanding event and showcased the considerable artistic talents of students in ELC to Year 9.
Speech Night was a wonderful celebration of the year, and it was filled with music, ceremony and an acknowledgement of our students’ achievements. Congratulations to all award recipients including the Dux of Haileybury College, Eshan, Dux of Haileybury Girls College, Diyenka, Dux Proximus of Haileybury College, Nilavan, and Dux Proximus of Haileybury Girls College, Caroline.
On Tuesday, 21 November both Reception and Pre-Prep children participated in Up Day. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to spend time in their 2024 classrooms with their new teachers and classmates.
A successful transition from the Early Learning Centre (ELC) to Junior School and between ELC year levels is important for all children and has long-lasting benefits. Children who experience a positive transition into their new environment are likely to be happy at school and to continue to improve their social and academic skills.
This time is also important for the children and families to begin building trusting and positive relationships with the educators. Families know their child’s strengths, personality, moods and behaviours very well. Educators will get to know a child well through their daily experiences and can share their understanding of how children develop. When families and staff work together, they can exchange information and focus on meeting each child’s needs while supporting their learning, development and wellbeing.
It was lovely to see the children enjoying different experiences during Up Day and hearing the stories they told on their return to their current educators. This highlights how each child’s identity, knowledge, understandings, dispositions, capabilities, skills and relationships are shaped by an important milestone like this.
In the last week of term students have some wonderful activities to look forward to:
Congratulations to all Middle School students who were acknowledged at Speech Night for their diligence and effort during 2023. It was a wonderful occasion, celebrating the achievements of many students and celebrating a busy and successful year at Edrington.
Congratulations to the HPV team who had a fantastic week. Every student gave their all, resulting in an overall finishing position of 20th. We are extremely proud of the effort of the students and staff over the past six months. Thank you to all parents who travelled with the team and were such a valuable support to staff and students.
There was a buzz of excitement during our orientation day, Up Day. It was wonderful to have all new and existing Middle School students experience a taste of what will happen next year. It was great to see students having fun and getting to know their new classes.
The Year 8 students have participated in our annual Leadership Day. They were treated to guest speakers and activities throughout the day that focused on identifying and developing each students’ leadership attributes. Students then had to write an application and present it to their peers with staff and students then voting. What was most impressive was the number of applicants and the calibre of their applications and speeches.
Congratulations to all involved. The leadership positions will be announced this week.

Stewart Bell was a fine Haileybury teacher for 40 years. From 1981 to 2021, he was passionate about the Arts and, as Director of Performing Arts, he built an impressive curriculum and helped some well-known students towards a career in the industry.
During his tenure, Stewart delivered over 70 outstanding quality dramatic and musical performances as well as a number of Tattoos that saw over 1,000 student performers on stage.
Haileybury Foundation is pleased to announce the Stewart Bell Scholarship recipient will begin in Year 9 in Term 1A. The Scholarship recognises the recipient’s leadership, community engagement and Performing Arts involvement. It has been provided to a student who meets the following criteria:
One of the scholarship’s key benefactors is Dr Tim Sturrock (OH 1980), a true Haileyburian. Tim studied Medicine at Monash University and specialises in obstetrics and gynaecology.
His Year 12 captaincy of Rendall House echoed through his children, Sam (OH 2007), Sophie (OH 2009) and Ned (OH2013) who were all captains of Clements House. Tim is incredibly proud of his Haileybury three-generation heritage, and we are incredibly thankful for his generosity to Haileybury Foundation and for providing a life changing opportunity.
Donations to Haileybury Foundation continue to stream in. Our students are incredibly fortunate to be in receipt of such a high-quality education that would otherwise be out of their reach.
All gifts to Haileybury Foundation are tax deductible. Our donors are having enormous impact and we have been delighted with the involvement of our community — from past parents, alumni and staff to current parents and staff.
Donations can be made here.
Thank you.

On Tuesday, 21 November, all students from ELC to Year 7 will spend time in their 2024 classes as part of Up Day.
Current students will have a regular start and finish time and can wear their sports uniform for the day. This will be a wonderful opportunity for them, as well as those students joining Newlands, to meet their teachers and peers before next year. The day will offer students a taste of some of the subjects and activities on offer, while also providing an opportunity for everyone to know a few more people leading into next year.
We hope they all have a wonderful experience meeting new class members and are excited for their next phase at Haileybury.
The much-anticipated Years 3 and 4 Academic Awards Assembly is scheduled for Friday, 1 December at 2.50 pm. This event is a celebration of the hard work, growth and dedication exhibited by our young learners in their academic pursuits.
We eagerly await this special occasion to applaud our young scholars and to inspire them for the journey ahead.
Throughout November, children in the ELC have been participating in several sessions and activities to prepare for transition into Pre-Prep and Prep in 2024.
There has been enthusiasm and excitement as children in the ELC prepare for new surroundings and the next phase of their learning journey.
Discussions at home about what it is that excites your child can help support their enthusiasm, and there are several picture books that can be used to assist children to prepare for and understand the transition into a new environment.
As the year draws to a close, we look forward to welcoming our families to our Celebration of Learning. Reaching the end of a year of learning is a huge milestone in the ELC and children have grown emotionally, physically and academically.
Within the ELC, we encourage children to be reflective learners, to acknowledge how far they have come in their learning journey, and to articulate the learning that has occurred throughout the year.
During our Celebration of Learning, children will be sharing their Learning Journals with their family to celebrate the things they are proud of and what has been important to them this year.
Please see the dates and times below. We look forward to sharing this occasion with you.

On Tuesday, 21 November, following the Campus Orientation Day, we are excited to host the Junior School Prep Information Night on Zoom at 6.00 pm.
This promises to be an invaluable opportunity for parents and guardians to gain insights into our Preparatory program, to meet our dedicated educators, and to get a comprehensive overview of what our Junior School has to offer. Join us as we explore the curriculum, extracurricular activities and the nurturing environment we provide to help new Preps thrive academically and personally.
We look forward to virtually connecting with our new Prep families and addressing any questions or concerns about this important stage in their child’s education.
On Thursday, 23 November, the Year 3s will embark on a journey to the Berwick campus for a special leadership program. Newlands, Castlefield, City and Edrington will come together to learn what makes a good leader.
The program will be run by YLead and will focus on leading from the heart. Students will take part in activities that represent the HEART acronym and demonstrate leadership qualities:
H = Helpful
E = Energy
A = Action and Active
R = Respectful Relationships
T = Team Player
The Year 3 students will look forward to applying the skills they learn in their Junior School leadership roles in 2024.
At the end of Term 4, concluding their Humanities studies, Year 5 students will visit the Immigration Museum and Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.
At the Immigration Museum, students will join a hands-on workshop and uncover unique settlement and migration experiences through objects and artefacts. At NGV Australia, they will explore Australia’s past through the lens of art. Through visual analysis and storytelling, students will have the chance to engage with the creative expressions of different periods in Australia’s history.
They will not only gain valuable historical knowledge but develop a deeper sense of empathy and understanding for diverse historical narratives and identities.

On Friday, 27 October, 40 delightful gentlemen from the Class of 1973 gathered at the Keysborough campus for a delicious morning tea, a school tour and, most importantly, to reconnect! Many had not returned to the campus since graduating and were amazed by the significant changes. It was very heart-warming to listen to their reminiscing and stories about playing sport on ovals that were surrounded by lush market gardens.
The 13th Annual Clark Club Luncheon at the Kingston Heath Golf Club on Friday, 27 October was a wonderful day! This annual event welcomes those who graduated from Haileybury 50 or more years ago. It recognises the contribution of Mr Brian ‘Weary’ Clark, a stalwart on the Haileybury staff for 43 years. It was touching to have Brian’s widow, Gweneth Clark, and son Tim (OH 1974) attend in his honour.
Russell Davidson (OH 1986) and Millie Hogben (OH 2013), the OHA’s first female president, welcomed over 170 guests to this special luncheon. This was followed by Ross Sundberg (OH 1960) who provided a poignant Brian Clark Oration and Derek Scott then delivered an interesting update on the School.
The most rewarding part of this milestone luncheon is making a difference in our alumni’s lives, watching them reconnect with their peers and listening to their stories from their school days and journeys to today.
We look forward to welcoming the Class of 1974 to next year’s luncheon!

On Monday, 13 November we commenced Term 1A for students stepping up to Years 8–12 in 2024. This was an opportunity for students to settle into their academic classes for 2024 and gain a solid grounding in their new courses.
Our first day of Term 1A was a special Transition Day when we welcomed students new to the school and set the tone for the year ahead. Students took part in sessions about academic expectations and skills, student leadership, effective routines and more. Students also explored the co-curricular options available through our Curious Minds program.
We thank Natasha Eshuis, Geoff Orton, Merinda Bermingham, Melissa Allen, Damien Meunier and our Pangea tutors for leading these sessions throughout the day. We also extend our gratitude to our 2023 graduates who were involved in the day, and who passed on their advice and guidance to students.
On Friday, 10 November Pangea students completed their last VCE examination for 2023. We congratulate our students undertaking a Units 3 and 4 course for their fortitude and focus.
We also express our sincere gratitude to all our Units 3 and 4 teachers for their generous and unwavering support of students throughout this year. It has been a unique challenge for students and teachers to undertake Units 3 and 4 courses in a new learning model and they have consistently risen to the occasion in the pursuit of academic excellence.
Joanna Baker
Head of Campus
VCE Units 3 and 4 examinations were completed on Wednesday, 15 November. All examinations for Years 9–11 subjects have now been completed and returned to students. I would like to thank all students for the way they conducted themselves throughout the examination period and my thanks also to the teachers who marked examinations and provided feedback in a timely manner.
It is important that all students reflect on their examination performance and set some strong academic goals for next year. If you feel your child needs help with the process of goal setting, please contact their relevant Head of Pre-Senior or Head of House.
Haileybury’s new academic year began on Monday, 13 November, with all students beginning their 2024 classes. In most cases, students began the day with the teacher who will take them through the year, however, in some instances teachers may change in January. Haileybury does its best to limit these changes, but it is rare for teachers new to the school to be able to start in November. As such, some changes are unavoidable.
Haileybury has been running this Term 1A program for 17 years and we believe the extra teaching time it provides gives our students a competitive advantage, particularly in their Units 3 and 4 studies.
To conclude their year as Year 11s, our 2024 Year 12 cohort took part in transition sessions ready for the commencement of Term 1A. This group of students has experienced an incredibly challenging few years, so the week was an opportunity to come together and get excited about their final year of schooling.
Other sessions included a visit to various tertiary institutions that are popular with our students. Thank you to our Head of Careers, Catherine Johnson, for setting up these visits.
We look forward to the new Year 12s embarking on their new roles as leaders and mentors to the Senior School student body.
Throughout the week beginning Monday, 30 October, our Year 10 students completed four days of work experience. This was a wonderful chance to get a first-hand look at the industries they may eventually like to work within.
For those students moving into Year 10 in 2024, please remember that some of the best and most stimulating work experience places fill up very early in the year. If you have a dream placement that you would like to complete in 2024, talk to your new Head of House early and obtain the necessary forms to send to your preferred employer.
The Pre-Senior cohort gathered at the Brighton Campus during Week 3 for their final City Option preparations, which included fundraising for the charity, Youth Projects. This organisation provides support to young people facing disadvantage, unemployment, homelessness, alcohol and drug issues, and offers training and employment opportunities.
During the City Option, Cooper and Alice donated to the Youth Projects café, The Little Social, in Hosier Lane, providing 80 coffees through the Pay It Forward program. We anticipate continuing our support for this fantastic charity and witnessing the positive impact it has on our local community. For more information about Youth Projects or The Little Social Café, please visit here.

Zachary (Year 8) has made Hockey Victoria’s U13 State squad and will represent Victoria at the Australian National U13 Hockey Carnival in Newcastle. He has had a tremendous year in hockey so far, representing the Eastern Metro Hotshots team at the Junior State Championships in July.
Subsequently, Zachary was selected into the HV high performance academy and has been training there for the past two months, culminating in the recent state selection.
Congratulations, Zac.
Keyaan and Oscar (both Year 12) have been selected in the Victorian U20 Basketball team to compete at the Australian U20 Championships in January and February 2024. Both boys were an integral part of Haileybury’s premiership basketball team last season.
We wish them all the very best.

Online news from Haileybury

Katrina Manson

International Principal, Haileybury International School, Tianjin

Dearest Edrington! Tracy and I would love to thank you all for your support, kindness, time, and generosity this year. We could not do what we do for our community without you all, so from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!
Your amazing food and gift donations will go a long way towards making Christmas a beautiful day for families in need. The support of our community blows us away! We now have over 400 followers on our Facebook and Insta pages and thank you to all our new followers for jumping onboard!
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We are looking forward to catching up with you in 2024.

H = Helpful
E = Energy
A = Action and Active
R = Respectful Relationships
T = Team Player

Keysborough Senior School marked Remembrance Day with a minute of silence in the Frank Elmore Chapel Forecourt.
