Online news from Haileybury
The publication of the latest PISA test results, that assess Maths, Reading and Science standards internationally, show that Haileybury continues to deliver a world-class standard of education.
It has been wonderful to celebrate the achievements of Haileybury students at the speech nights over the past week. I was pleased to congratulate the students across all campuses and the Senior Schools on making the most of the world-class education opportunities available to them at Haileybury.
Confirmation of this came on Tuesday night with the release of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 test results. The PISA test is conducted in 81 countries by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development every three years — although it was delayed for one year because of COVID-19. The test is for 15-year-olds and is conducted in Maths, Reading and Science.
It was pleasing to see that this set of results showed a stabilisation in Australian student performance after a significant decline between 2006 and 2018 when the previous test was done. The Australian student average places student performance in ninth or tenth in all three categories. Performance was, however, still a long way behind the very top jurisdictions. Singapore was the top-performing country in all categories.
This year, as a part of our global benchmarking, Haileybury conducted the PISA in schools test which gives data directly comparable with the PISA global results.
It is done as a sample rather than a census test and the results were outstanding, showing that Haileybury students are producing world-class results.
Haileybury 15-year-old students’ PISA reading average score was 546 — ahead of the Singapore average of 543. The Australian average was 498.
In Maths, the Haileybury student average score of 549 was well ahead of the Australian average of 487 and behind only Singapore (575) and Macao (China) with 552. Similarly, in Science, Haileybury students’ average score of 545 was well ahead of the Australian average of 507, and just behind Singapore (561) and Japan (547).
These results reflect the world-class standard of Haileybury teachers, the great effort and commitment of the students, and the support from families. My congratulations to everyone involved.

Haileybury recently witnessed a remarkable display of passion, determination and skill, with 110 students from City, Brighton, Berwick and Keysborough auditioning for our upcoming musical, The Addams Family. This was the largest audition in our Senior School history and showcased an extraordinary array of singing, dancing and acting talents.
The auditions were a four-part process, beginning with an inclusive whole-company workshop where each participant sang, acted and danced in mini workshops run by the production team. This allowed everyone to demonstrate their skills.
This was followed by lead role auditions where 83 students showcased impressive dedication and talent. The high calibre of these auditions was evident in the open-format call-backs that gave a glimpse of the preparation and commitment of our students.
As we eagerly await the cast announcement, there is a palpable excitement about bringing the spooky, kooky world of the Addams Family to our stage. This production will be a game-changer thanks to the enthusiasm of our students and dedicated production team.
Congratulations to all who auditioned and a huge thanks to our production team for orchestrating such a supportive and inclusive process.
Jane Marshall, a distinguished Haileybury teacher, was honoured as the recipient of the 'Inaugural Award for Innovative Teaching Practice in VCE'. Nominated by her colleague, Philippa Bell, Jane received this accolade at the Drama Victoria Conference. She was celebrated for her innovative and practical teaching methods in drama, her adept use of technology, contemporary analytical approaches, and profound subject knowledge. Her nomination and subsequent award recognition are sources of great pride for all associated with her.

This year has been an extremely successful year for the Instrumental Music Department, and I hope it has been rewarding for students and parents. From a Music Department perspective, the high level of engagement and artistic growth throughout the year has been most pleasing.
For Senior School, highlights include the Twilight Concert, Aria Night, Haileybury Top Class, the VCAA Top Class series, SpongeBob the Musical, Concerto Night, Jazz Nights at MEMO Hall, Haileybury in Concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Chamber in the Chapel and Senior School Speech Night.
At Middle School, the standout performance of the year was undoubtedly the Combined Spring Concerts. With Aikman Hall at near capacity for two concerts in one afternoon, a combined audience of more than 1,500 guests enjoyed performances by our One-Haileybury concert band, string orchestra, choir, guitar orchestra and percussion ensemble. In addition to campus-based events held at the end of Term Two, all large ensembles have also featured at speech night ceremonies.
At the Junior School, the recent String Concert series demonstrated what can be achieved when an outstanding department combines with an abundance of Junior School enthusiasm.
There were countless other performances across 2023. Hundreds of students participated in soirees, completed AMEB exams, performed in lunchtime concerts and performed in assemblies.
The Department’s final performance event for 2023 will be Haileybury Carols this Friday, 8 December at Scots’ Church in Melbourne. It would be wonderful to see as many families as possible celebrate Christmas in a sharing, culturally diverse way to end the school year. The event will run from 7.00 pm – 8.15 pm. I strongly encourage families to arrive by 6.30 pm to avoid traffic and parking congestion.
Well done to everyone and thanks for a most enjoyable year!

Director of Performing Arts & Head of Haileybury Music
Terence (Year 12), our 2023 Art Captain, has achieved an outstanding milestone in his artistic journey. His series of digital photographs titled Cocoon has earned him a spot among the shortlisted candidates for the prestigious Top Arts exhibition held annually at the National Gallery of Victoria.
We eagerly await the exhibition’s final selection and hope Terence’s captivating artwork will be selected to be part of the show. Regardless of the outcome, his achievement showcases the remarkable creativity thriving within our School.
We are proud of Terence for his hard work and effort throughout the year.

Last Saturday marked a special occasion for the Haileybury Pipes & Drums as they hosted their festive wrap-up event. The band, fresh from a year of remarkable achievements, played to a crowd of nearly one hundred parents.
Pieces included familiar melodies such as ‘Silver Threads’, the ‘Drum Fanfare’ and the ‘Blue Bells of Scotland’. The combined group performance comprising of players from all bands of the program was a reminder of the band’s growing numbers and future talent.
2023 has been a triumphant year for the Haileybury Pipes & Drums and the most successful year in the program with the introduction of the newly formed C Band and winning state, national and even world titles. The band’s success is not just a testament to their skill, but to the commitment and hard work of each member.
At this joyous event, it was important to extend a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated staff and supportive parents. Their unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental to the band’s success. As we celebrated with some delicious food, the sense of community and shared achievement was palpable.
A big thank you to Susan Carollo (President of the Friends – Pipes & Drums) and the parents committee for putting on such a fantastic lunch.
The event was not just a reflection of the past but a nod to the future. The band is eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Speech Nights and the 2024 competition season. They are set to debut new music which they have been diligently working on and that promises to add more laurels to their already impressive achievements.

It is breath-taking to see so many contributions under our Christmas tree in the Administration foyer. I thank families for their generosity. There are still a few days left for donations to be accepted ready for distribution to Anglicare prior to Christmas Day.
William (Year 8) has been accepted as a Young Ambassador at the Shrine of Remembrance for 2024. With his keen interest in World War II, general war and aviation history, William has been a member of the Winjeels student group at Moorabbin Air Museum since 2021.
On the eve of UNICEF’s World Children’s Day, with two Young Ambassador 2023 students, William laid a wreath during the weekly Last Post ceremony. This service includes bugle calls and piper, the Shrine Guard in historic uniform, the recital of the Ode and lowering of the flags.
We congratulate William on his appointment and wish him all the best in this prestigious role in 2024.
We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday, 29 January. Further details will be sent during the holidays regarding arrangements. We ask that students arrive by 8.25 am on this day and bring all items from their booklists.
2023 has been a fantastic year at Castlefield. I thank our outstanding students for their dedication to their learning and for their connectedness across the School. They have ensured that this year will be remembered richly in Haileybury’s history.
I thank our parents for their continued support and involvement, and our staff for the exceptional passion and care they devote to our students each and every day.
Please enjoy the festive season and have a safe and pleasant holiday break with your family. I look forward to our continued association in 2024.
A reminder for families that South Road is the preferred pick-up and drop-off location for students in Junior and Middle Schools and the roundabout is an efficient way to collect your child. Staff are on duty before and after school to help children remain safe within our grounds.
For Senior School students, South Road is the only drop-off and pick-up area for parents who drive their child to school. We encourage older students to walk, ride or take public transport, rather than being driven to school. The PTV planner can be found here.
Thank you for supporting our ELC community. How wonderful it was to see the children become shopkeepers and confidently encouraging families to buy, serving their customers and keeping note of how many tea towels were sold. It was a record sale and lots of fun too!
During your child’s class party this week you will receive your child’s Learning Journal. This is a celebration of your child’s achievements throughout the year and evidence of all the beautiful learning that has occurred.
The journals have taken considerable time and effort to put together by the teaching teams and represent our commitment to your child’s learning, development and wellbeing. Not only are these a lovely keepsake, they also act as a report to share with your family and future educators.
It is very special that the children can relate to the Learning Journals and talk through their own learning and demonstrate their connection and sense of belonging to the ELC. We trust you will enjoy sharing this book with your child and revisiting fond memories throughout the year.
Thank you all for your time and contributions to our ELC over the year. We have had a very special year with you all and look forward to seeing you at your child’s class party and Learning Journal celebration at 1.00 pm.
With the key concepts of change and cause being explored in their Inquiry unit this term, the Year 1 students headed to TwistED Science for their excursion.
‘We loved making the big bubbles and creating our own “Cloud in a Jar” experiment.’ - Mia and Matisse
‘My highlight was going into the massive part of TwistED Science and exploring the pictures in the lab.’ - Thomas
‘My favourite was the blue air blower with the ball because I got a goal’ - Alfred
‘I loved the photo shoot and blowing bubbles. I got to make a ginormous bubble that I could fit my whole head in.’ - Nina
The process of moving to the next stage of schooling is a big deal! At Haileybury, we ensure each step is considered and well planned. ELC Pre-Prep children visit the Junior School in formal transition sessions and incidentally throughout the week.
As they move through East Quad on the way to the library, they may be stopped by staff or students, or have a quick play in the playground. All these experiences help them feel comfortable in their new spaces.
Similarly, our Year 4 students spend time in their respective Middle Schools, whether for an assembly or a Q&A session. They too can get excited about the next step as they know a little bit more about what’s to come.
Year 4 House leaders ran their final Junior School assembly for the year with a focus on play. As the third element in our ‘Care, Learn, Play’ motto, they encouraged all children to play with respect and kindness, and to show fairness when making up game rules.
House Leaders have helped our students to be great players across the year by leading recess and lunchtime clubs and being role models for our junior students.
As the year draws to a close, Castlefield is a hive of activity with numerous events that celebrate, acknowledge and allow our students to be involved in new experiences. At Castlefield Speech Night on Friday, 1 December, we were able to reflect, acknowledge and celebrate the year that was in Middle School, with students coming together to foster the community spirit and connections at Castlefield.
Our uniform is a very important part of our School and the way in which our students present each day. With the holidays coming up and students growing, please ensure your child has appropriate school shoes ready to begin Term 1 next year.
Middle School students are required to wear black leather shoes — either school lace-up shoes, business shoes or T-bars. Runners are not permitted.
Also, a reminder that students must wear their blazer home with their school uniform, or their sports jacket home with their sports uniform, unless they are advised this is not required on the day due to weather conditions.

Head of Castlefield (Brighton)
On behalf of the Haileybury Parents & Friends Castlefield, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who generously donated their time to support the HPFC this year. Your contributions have made a significant impact, and we are truly thankful.
As the year draws to a close, please be aware that the SHUS will be closed until the start of Term 1. We look forward to reconnecting with familiar faces and welcoming new volunteers in the coming year.
Wishing each and every one of you a joyous and rejuvenating summer holiday. May it be filled with relaxation, laughter and cherished moments with loved ones. We can’t wait to see you again in the upcoming year.

As part of the the Victorian Government’s Education Mission to China, Haileybury recently hosted a delegation from Study Melbourne.
The delegation was led by the Hon John Brumby AO, Chair of Victoria’s International Education Advisory Council and Chancellor of La Trobe University, and Caroline Hartnett who is Acting Director International Education and Study Melbourne. Visitors also included members from the higher education sector and government education and training organisations.
Our CEO | Principal, Derek Scott, hosted a round table discussion on topics including international education, student exchange, teaching research, and strengthening the education collaboration with Haileybury Tianjin. Our Executive Principal, Andrew McAree, gave a presentation highlighting the achievements of our School over the last 10 years.
It was wonderful to see Louise Elleston from Haileybury City Campus and Barbara Zhu from Haileybury Tianjin, both Year 3 Science teachers, embarking on an exciting collaboration between their Junior Schools.
During Barbara’s recent Haileybury Melbourne training, the two teachers shared ideas for engaging their students in Year 3 Science, and how to align their lesson plans to make the most of the collaboration. It was great to see students from Haileybury China and Haileybury Melbourne engaging in some scientific conversation.
Recently, Haileybury Tianjin had the honour of hosting 200 students in the regional round of the famous ASDAN Business Simulation Competition. Over a two-day weekend, approximately 25 teams from all over China entered the competition at Haileybury.
The ASDAN competition is based on professional simulated business IT systems and consists of three sessions: five rounds of operations, two rounds of project presentations and an auction trading. The team that produces the most profit is announced as the winner. The competition gave all students a wonderful experience. They have learned about unity and cooperation, communication and negotiation, and they have gained a better understanding of the significance of hard work. Congratulations to the three Haileybury teams that won a silver and two bronze awards, and we wish them luck as they compete in the finals early next year.

Everyone loves the magic of City campus and the Storium was a perfect expression of the imagination and creativity that is alive in our vertical campus. The brainchild of Jane Marshall (known as Miss Birdwhistle) and her trusty sidekick, Philippa Bell (Miss Lovejoy), as well as their dedicated colleagues Rebecca Frith, Andrew Weatherill and Ed Schaepman, and with the expert help of Stewart Bell (Mr Peabody), the magic of the Storium existed for two weeks at City campus.
Our ELC to Year 8 City students were immersed in the enchanted world of the Storium — an alternative universe that was an incredible example of how Haileybury City fosters a love of literature and nurtures literacy skills in all students.
A visit to the Storium began with the delivery of a mysterious invitation that magically arrived at each Homeroom on the morning of their visit. Surprised students and staff followed instructions until they reached their destination in a secret location on our Arts floor.
Once inside the enigmatic space, thanks to the turn of a key that revealed a bookcase with a hidden entry, students guessed and hypothesised about what was occurring, allowing their creative thoughts to grow.
Following this interactive experience, students entered a dynamic writing space and, under the guidance of a character from the Storium, began crafting a story. This wonderful interdisciplinary learning opportunity incorporated elements of Drama and English. Students finished their narrative in their English classes, and we look forward to publishing these and putting them on the shelves of the City library.
The Storium demonstrates our commitment to enriching and extending our students’ learning until the last day of every term and year. We remind our families that leave is best taken in our generous school holidays. Any requests for leave outside these times must be directed to the Head of Campus well in advance. Our staff constantly plan wonderful learning opportunities for our students, as every minute of learning counts. Please ensure you download the Term Dates from the Haileybury website for 2024 before booking your holidays.
Wishing you all a happy holiday and wonderful new year. We look forward to welcoming you back to City campus in 2024.
With our City campus located at the heart of the Arts capital, it is no wonder children in the ELC love to express themselves creatively. Music and dance are a feature of our outdoor space as children move and play outside on our Terrace, and our beautiful gathering circle is a vibrant example of history and story told through art.
Within each room in ELC, the Arts and the skills these experiences help develop are nurtured and fostered. Reception children are creating insects out of plasticine, while Pre-Prep have been encouraged to incorporate intricate flower patterns using fine lines to create vibrant watercolour backgrounds.
As we draw closer to the end of the year, we thank you for joining us at our End of Year Celebration of Learning to showcase our learning journals and a musical performance.
It was wonderful to celebrate the children’s growth and learning and we thank our families for working in partnership with Haileybury City throughout the year.
Junior School students engaged in a memorable Learn to Swim program at the University of Victoria (VU) Footscray campus. This initiative underscored the dedication of City campus to nurture industry partnerships within our distinctive geographical setting.
Expert swim instructors led the lessons which integrated into the Physical Education curriculum. Focused on stroke development, water safety, rescue skills, floatation and pool entry/exit techniques, the program provided a well-rounded aquatic education. This hands-on experience not only honed the students’ swimming abilities but reinforced the importance of water competency as an integral aspect of their overall physical education.
The 2023 Peace Pole Ceremony at City Campus was attended by esteemed members of the Rotary Club of North Melbourne, solidifying their strong relationship with our school community and our joint pursuit of recognising and promoting global peace.
The ceremony was held at the Inside Out courts on Batman Street, where our prominent Peace Pole proudly stands. Each Year 3 student delivered a heartfelt statement on the importance of peace, preparing and rehearsing diligently in the lead-up to the ceremony.
More than 250,000 Peace Poles in approximately 200 countries symbolise a shared wish for a peaceful world and the event served as a powerful reminder of our global interconnectedness. The ceremony’s conclusion echoed some profound sentiments including, “If there is to be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighbours.”
On Tuesday, 21 November we looked to the future with Up Day. This was an opportunity for our young people to become accustomed to their teachers, classmates and their new school if they are joining Haileybury for the first time in 2024.
Levels 4 and 5 were buzzing as students had fun, developed connections and gained a better understanding of what next year will look like. The boys and girls had a range of experiences which included visiting our Inside Out court, going to Flagstaff Gardens at lunchtime and for Physical Education classes and travelling between floors for specialist classes in Music, Art and Computer Science. They were involved in a Science workshop and participated in core subjects such as English, Humanities, Mathematics and Languages.
A brilliant day was had by all, and the excitement continues to build for the 2024 school year.
To wrap up their Humanities studies, our Year 5 students embarked on a journey to Melbourne’s Immigration Museum and the Ian Potter Centre at NGV Australia. At the Immigration Museum, students participated in a hands-on workshop and delved into the stories of settlement and migration through a myriad of objects and artifacts.
At NGV Australia, the students went on an artistic exploration of Australia’s past. Through the lenses of visual analysis and storytelling, the boys and girls interacted with the creative expressions of various periods in Australia’s history. This experience brought valuable historical knowledge and helped foster a deeper sense of empathy and understanding for the diverse narratives and identities that have shaped our history.
On Thursday, 30 November, Year 8 students attended the Dark Matters exhibition at The University of Melbourne’s Science Gallery as part of their Physics studies in Science. The exhibition, presented in conjunction with CERN and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics, explores the mysteries of dark matter, the exploration of the unknown in science, and the limits of human imagination.
Students enjoyed the merging of Science and Art as they were presented with artistic interpretations of subatomic particles, four dimensional spacetime, and CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.
Haileybury City Science teacher, Caleb Street, presented a special ‘activation’ of a Mystery Box — an interactive experience where students were invited to intuit the contents of an enigmatic black box before a surprising and miraculous reveal.

HPF City ran an extremely successful pop-up second-hand uniform shop on Up Day. It was very popular, with many new parents coming in and securing a bargain or two.
With the end of the year approaching, this is a perfect time to sort out those outgrown and no longer needed uniform items. You can deliver them to the collection bins for sale at the second-hand uniform shop. To assist families, the bins can be found at City Reception at King Street until Friday, 15 December 2023.
Reception re-opens from Thursday, 4 January 2024 and will gladly accept items until Monday, 22 January 2024. More information can be found on the myHaileybury app. Please email us here should you have any difficulties locating the form.
It feels like yesterday that we were starting the 2023 academic year, and here we are at the end! Thankfully, 2023 has seen the return to academic routines post the COVID-19 disruptions which has resulted in academic growth for all students. It has been a truly remarkable year with fabulous camps, artistic and sporting accomplishments and, most importantly, happy students.
Thank you to Caroline Merrick, Robert Johnson and Haileybury City’s wonderful Exec team. It has been a wonderful 12 months for HPF City to work alongside you on HPF City’s mission of fundraising and community engagement.
A big thank you also to Gabe Di Martino and his team who are behind the set up for each event and do all the heavy lifting. Without this team, many events would not happen. Your help and assistance are very much appreciated.
A huge thank you to the extremely dedicated teaching staff who inspire our children to learn every day. We are truly grateful for the work you do with our children each day.
On behalf of HPF City, we wish all our families, students and the Haileybury City staff a wonderful festive season. We hope everyone gets to have a bit of a break, takes some time to focus on family and enjoys our fabulous Australian summer.
Wishing you a lovely Christmas holiday break and a superb start to 2024.

In the midst of a busy Wellbeing Week, our Middle and Senior Schools have launched into myHRS; a suite of digital tools for Haileybury Rendall School students, parents and staff. Since the launch date on Monday, 13 November over 500 apps have been downloaded.
Haileybury Melbourne families will know about these platforms, but Darwin is thrilled to join in and run similar services for our entire community.
myHRS will serve as an inclusive intranet for students and parents and is complemented by a dedicated parent app that provides information, announcements, events and updates.
The following tools will keep parents and students informed and involved in their educational journey. And yes, you can even submit absences on the new app!
With a few simple steps you can have all this information at your fingertips with the myHRS app.
Junior School students and parents can look forward to accessing this streamlined myHRS experience with phase two of the launch from Tuesday, 30 January 2024.
Get connected and stay connected!
Andrew McGregor
Principal, Haileybury Rendall School
Sincere thanks to our students, staff and families for the way we have all worked together to ensure our campus is a wonderful community. I am incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and dedication to their learning, as well as the way in which they treat each other kindly and with respect.
Thank you to the parents for their steadfast support and assistance in making Edrington a warm and welcoming place for all. I am also incredibly grateful to all staff for their tireless efforts in providing an outstanding education for the students, for their collegiality, and for their commitment to our School.
I wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season with family and friends and I look forward to seeing you in 2024.
This year’s Art Exhibition was an outstanding event and showcased the considerable artistic talents of students in ELC to Year 9.
Speech Night was a wonderful celebration of the year, and it was filled with music, ceremony and an acknowledgement of our students’ achievements. Congratulations to all award recipients including the Dux of Haileybury College, Eshan, Dux of Haileybury Girls College, Diyenka, Dux Proximus of Haileybury College, Nilavan, and Dux Proximus of Haileybury Girls College, Caroline.
On Tuesday, 21 November both Reception and Pre-Prep children participated in Up Day. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to spend time in their 2024 classrooms with their new teachers and classmates.
A successful transition from the Early Learning Centre (ELC) to Junior School and between ELC year levels is important for all children and has long-lasting benefits. Children who experience a positive transition into their new environment are likely to be happy at school and to continue to improve their social and academic skills.
This time is also important for the children and families to begin building trusting and positive relationships with the educators. Families know their child’s strengths, personality, moods and behaviours very well. Educators will get to know a child well through their daily experiences and can share their understanding of how children develop. When families and staff work together, they can exchange information and focus on meeting each child’s needs while supporting their learning, development and wellbeing.
It was lovely to see the children enjoying different experiences during Up Day and hearing the stories they told on their return to their current educators. This highlights how each child’s identity, knowledge, understandings, dispositions, capabilities, skills and relationships are shaped by an important milestone like this.
In the last week of term students have some wonderful activities to look forward to:
Congratulations to all Middle School students who were acknowledged at Speech Night for their diligence and effort during 2023. It was a wonderful occasion, celebrating the achievements of many students and celebrating a busy and successful year at Edrington.
Congratulations to the HPV team who had a fantastic week. Every student gave their all, resulting in an overall finishing position of 20th. We are extremely proud of the effort of the students and staff over the past six months. Thank you to all parents who travelled with the team and were such a valuable support to staff and students.
There was a buzz of excitement during our orientation day, Up Day. It was wonderful to have all new and existing Middle School students experience a taste of what will happen next year. It was great to see students having fun and getting to know their new classes.
The Year 8 students have participated in our annual Leadership Day. They were treated to guest speakers and activities throughout the day that focused on identifying and developing each students’ leadership attributes. Students then had to write an application and present it to their peers with staff and students then voting. What was most impressive was the number of applicants and the calibre of their applications and speeches.
Congratulations to all involved. The leadership positions will be announced this week.

As the 2023 school year concludes and many of our students transition to their new school year via Term 1A, I am pleased to report that supporters of Haileybury Foundation have continued to create an enormous impact for our students.
Two students graduated at the end of 2023, and we look forward to following the journeys of Alicia and Vinith as they prepare for the next phase of their lives. I know they were thrilled to be provided with an incredible opportunity by their benefactors and they will commit to sharing their story and encouraging others to provide the life-changing opportunities they were afforded.
Sadly, amongst the joys of this year, we lost one of our School’s greatest supporters in Jim Pfeiffer (OH 1964). Jim was a prominent student at Haileybury from 1956 –1964 and was involved in many facets of School life. Jim served on the School Council from 1982 –2010 and he was particularly valued for his work in Finance and Governance. He had a significant involvement in the establishment of the Haileybury Foundation and was a Winged Heart Society member.
When the doors open in 2024, 32 students will commence or continue their Haileybury journey via a Haileybury Foundation Scholarship. This is a record number of Foundation Scholarship students and testament to the generosity and belief of our donors.
Two of our year 12 Foundation Scholarship students have secured significant leadership positions for the upcoming school year. Ryan, the beneficiary of a bequest scholarship in 2019, has been provided the opportunity to be our Senior Prefect at City while Eshara, the beneficiary of one of our Workplace Giving Scholarships, commences 2024 as a House Captain. It is a great joy to see these students making the most of their Haileybury education.
Our students are thriving, and our donors are making a significant difference. The impact is perhaps best summed up by Class of 1982 Scholarship recipient, Sol, who is almost at the age where he can secure part time work. He has decided to put aside a small portion of his weekly wage for the Foundation because he has seen firsthand the impact it has made on him.
Thank you to each and every one of you. Be safe during the festive season.
Donations to Haileybury Foundation continue to stream in. Our students are incredibly fortunate to be in receipt of such a high-quality education that would otherwise be out of their reach.
All gifts to Haileybury Foundation are tax deductible. Our donors are having enormous impact and we have been delighted with the involvement of our community — from past parents, alumni and staff to current parents and staff.
Donations can be made here.
Thank you.

On Tuesday, 5 December, it was time for the Year 4 students at Newlands to mark a significant milestone as they officially graduate from Junior School and move into Middle School for 2024. This occasion provides a special opportunity for students, teachers and families to reflect on cherished memories created during their time in Junior School.
The graduation ceremony was a heart-warming experience. Attendees embarked on a visual journey and viewed a collection of photos that captured the essence of these formative years. Additionally, they had the chance to hear reflections from the students themselves.
One of the symbolic moments of the ceremony was when the Year 4 students walked over a bridge, symbolising their transition from Junior School to Middle School. On the other side of this bridge, they were warmly welcomed by Mathew Shill and Sandra Tiepermann who officially acknowledged their journey into the Boys and Girls Middle Schools.
To conclude this memorable morning, each student was presented with a graduation pin and a Graduation Bear — a keepsake to be signed by their teachers and peers.
Newlands families are invited to bring in toys or gift cards to support the Anglicare Victoria Christmas Toy Appeal. This can create a wonderful experience for a child, teenager or parent in need.
Please bring donated Christmas gifts to the Newlands office where they will be placed under the Christmas tree in the foyer. Please ensure gifts are new and are left unwrapped to allow parents a choice in what gifts their children receive. Please see the gift suggestion letter attached for ideas as we will not be collecting any food items.
Monetary donations are welcome and can be donated using the QR code on the attached poster.
Thank you for your support of this Social Justice initiative.
Children have been provided rich and varied experiences throughout 2023 including the Adopt-A-Park project, Middle School ‘games visit’, meeting furry and scaly friends in the Animals of Oz incursion, Bollywood dancing — not to mention all our amazing families who have shared their knowledge and experience.
We thank families for their partnership with us and celebrate the rich and authentic learning that all children have experienced within the ELC.
As Learning Journals make their way home following our Celebration of Learning, we encourage families to revisit these beautiful memories as your child continues to progress in the years to come.
A reminder that the ELC will close on Tuesday, 19 December at 3.00 pm and reopens on Thursday, 4 January 2024.
This year, the ELC children, families and educators raised money for Monash Children’s Hospital which is a continued Social Justice focus for our ELC each year.
The annual Art Auction was an absolute highlight with beautiful art canvasses created by each class that went home to successful bidders.
Newlands ELC raised over $2,300 to donate to this worthy cause.
As the academic year draws to a close, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for the incredible year we have had together. It has been a joy and privilege to work with your children and to witness their growth, enthusiasm and dedication.
Our classes have been a dynamic and vibrant community, thanks in no small part to the support and involvement of our wonderful Newlands families. Your commitment to your child’s education and the broader school community has made a significant impact on the overall experience for everyone.
As we wrap up the year, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the achievements and milestones your child has reached. Each success is a testament to their hard work and your unwavering support. The memories created, friendships forged and lessons learned will undoubtedly shape their future endeavours.
To celebrate the culmination of this academic journey, each Junior School class will be organising unique activities and events to celebrate the end of the year, such as an End of Year Class Picnic. These moments of celebration mark the end of a chapter and the beginning of new opportunities and adventures.
Once again, thank you for entrusting us with the education and well-being of your children. It has been a truly remarkable year and I look forward to seeing the continued success and growth of each student in the years to come.
Kind regards
Paul Dooley

Recently the Prep students headed off on an exciting excursion to Chesterfield Farm to learn all about Australian animals and life on a farm. This linked in with our Semester 2 Inquiry units.
The students were excited to see a live sheepdog demonstration and how milk is produced with a cow milking demonstration.
Congratulations to Mingda (Year 8) on winning two awards at the National History Challenge 2023 Awards Ceremony on Monday, 20 November.
Mingda participated in the Curious Minds National History Challenge during Terms 2 and 3 this year and selected a period of history he was interested in researching. He presented his findings in a historical essay and progressed to the State finals in September where he was interviewed by a panel of historians about his research.
Mingda was awarded the 2023 Victorian Young Historian Gold in the ‘Using Primary Sources’ category and he was also awarded the 2023 Victorian Young Historian Gold for Year 7.
We are very proud of his efforts and hope his passion for history continues.

The Class of 1988 thoroughly enjoyed their 35-year reunion lunch at the vibrant Sunny Boy in Mordialloc which is owned by fellow Old Haileyburians. The air was filled with infectious laughter at a very joyous reunion of lifelong friends. The unanimous verdict was that the event scored a resounding five-star rating from attendees!
The Class of 1998 celebrated their 25-year reunion at the Stomping Ground Brewery and Beer Hall, also owned by a fellow Old Haileyburian. Feedback from the attendees was powerful with one person saying, “Super proud to be an Old Haileyburian and in particular knowing that my two sons will have all this to look forward to in years to come,” and, “It was an excellent night. Felt like I blinked and it was 1.00 am!”
The Class of 2018 revelled in the celebrations of their 5-year reunion in style at Ballers Clubhouse. They chatted, danced, immersed themselves in the ball pit, table tennis and dart lanes — all while enjoying delicious food and impressive cocktails. A fabulous night was had by all!
On a beautiful and calm Friday night, the Class of 2022 marked their 1-year reunion cruising onboard the magnificent Calypso Lady. It was terrific to see them reconnect, share stories and reminisce while sailing on the Yarra.

We have been thrilled to see our students take the initiative to launch new ventures at Haileybury Pangea — after all, entrepreneurship is part of our DNA!
Supported by Damien Meunier, a group of Haileybury Pangea students have developed and launched The Pangean — an online magazine for, and by, Pangea students that features student work, interviews and stories.
The magazine is a brilliant opportunity for students to share their stories and for the magazine team to develop their writing, editing, design and publishing skills.
We thank Damien Meunier and Natasha Eshuis for their support of this fantastic venture, and we look forward to the next edition!
We warmly invite Pangea students, staff and families to attend our first ever Speech Night to celebrate the achievements of our students and to mark this historic first year of Haileybury Pangea.
Speech Night will be broadcast online on Friday, 8 December from 4:30 pm.

Head of Campus
I would like to thank all Haileybury staff and students for the way they began the 2024 academic year. Term 1A is a chance for students to begin their 2024 studies early and to become comfortable in their new classes before heading off for an extended summer break.
It takes an enormous amount of organisation and effort to ensure a new school year is ready to go in November of the previous year; however, Haileybury believes that getting a head start on the new year is of great benefit to our students, particularly those studying VCE Units 3 and 4.
As the academic year concludes I would like to say a sincere thank you to you all for your ongoing support of Haileybury.
My best wishes for a safe and happy time away from the usual school routine.
Many Haileybury students and families gathered on the evening of Tuesday, 5 December to celebrate another successful year at Haileybury. The night also featured prize giving for our very best sportspeople, performers and academics. The quality of the musical performances on the night was outstanding, bearing testament to the strength of Haileybury’s Performing Arts program.
The sport program at Haileybury is an integral component in developing the well-rounded Haileyburian. Team success is dependent on all students attending Tuesday training and Saturday competition. As such, all students are expected to train on Tuesday afternoons during sport time.
It is a condition of enrolment in the Senior School that all students participate in compulsory Saturday competition. Should there be a valid and genuine reason for being unavailable, then notification (as with all absences) must be verified by a parent and is expected to be received well in advance.
On the very rare occasion that a student becomes ill on a Friday night or Saturday morning, parents need to communicate this message to their child’s coach via email and follow up with a medical certificate emailed to the relevant Head of Sport. Coaches’ emails are available at the top of your child’s team sheet. Please do not use the myHaileybury app to record Saturday Sport absences.
Students who are not fulfilling their sporting obligation due to unapproved absences will be followed up by the Heads of Sport and Head of Senior School.
To reiterate our school policy, should your child need to leave school for an appointment and miss Tuesday sport training, a medical certificate will need to be emailed to the Heads of Boys and Girls Sport the following day. Haileybury asks that students and parents avoid making appointments on Tuesday afternoons during sport training.
Parents of students who are at school and unable to train must contact the school (prior to training commencing) explaining the circumstances.
The Haileybury Sports Department values your support of the programs that run on Tuesday afternoons and on Saturday mornings.
Congratulations to Mila (Year 12) on completing her Gold Level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Congratulations to students Lucy (Year 11) and Pranav (Year 12) who shone at the recent prestigious Alliance Française awards ceremony!
In this, the 129th edition, Lucy secured 2nd place in the oral competition for Year 11, while Pranav clinched 3rd prize in the written competition for Year 12.
Old Haileyburian Arnav Chauhan (OH 2022) had the honour of announcing the prizes this year. Arnav took away the Top Prize in 2022 and enjoyed being part of such an esteemed event and awarding fellow Haileybury students.
The Alliance Française Berthe Mouchette Competition provides a distinctive and unforgettable experience for participants studying French language and culture in Australia.
Within Victoria, the Alliance Française competition plays a pivotal role in advancing the cause of Francophone language and culture, aligning with the core mission of the Alliance. Over 16,000 candidates take part in this competition annually between May and November, which stands as a testament to the enduring significance of the French language.
I am writing to inform you of a unique opportunity for two of Haileybury’s Year 10, 2024 students to exchange to Haileybury Rendall School (HRS) in Darwin for one term (Term 3, 2024).
The opportunity will allow up to one boy and one girl from our 2024 Year 10 cohort to live in the HRS Boarding House in Darwin and attend classes as a Year 10 HRS student. The Haileybury Melbourne School fees will apply to the placement at HRS, covering the cost of boarding and meals. Flights and additional living expenses will be paid by the successful applicant.
The exchange will allow our students to experience education within a similar curriculum and subject choice, but importantly, will provide an opportunity to be involved and develop cultural understandings and leadership in areas such as sport, music and performing arts.
The final selection for this unique experience will be a letter of application and an interview process.
Further information about this opportunity will be published next year. We also look forward to offering students from HRS a reverse exchange.

Online news from Haileybury

CEO | Principal

Rod Marshall

Director, Pipes & Drums
Katrina Manson

Yanni Galanis
International Principal, Haileybury International School, Tianjin

Paul Dooley
Head of Junior School – Newlands

Joanna Baker
