Year 12 celebrations mark a milestone for the Class of 2023 and Haileybury Tianjin welcomes Australia’s Ambassador to China to celebrate the School’s 10th anniversary
The final combined day and final combined assembly for Year 12 Haileybury students was held on Friday and was a wonderful celebration of the strong Haileybury culture that exists across the girls’ school and the boys’ school.
The Year 12 boys’ celebrations conclude with a final day on Monday and a Valedictory Dinner in the evening. Haileybury Girls College’s final day celebrations and dinner are on Tuesday.
This Year 12 cohort consists of 479 students who have had a remarkable journey through the Senior School — their first two years were impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns. The students came through this period with great strength, and they have been a focussed and committed group who have done themselves proud.
In Friday’s speeches by the School Captains, Neeraja and Sam, much was made of the strong bonds shared by the group and of the benefit and enjoyment that came with being part of a multi-cultural community covering multiple campuses, classes and co-curricular activities across the Schools. This is a special part of a Haileybury education.
There was also great appreciation for the teaching staff of Haileybury. Teaching is a profession that has changed significantly this century and the teacher shortage across Australia is widely reported. Haileybury teachers are all professionals with a minimum of four years training, and they have extraordinary dedication and commitment to the education and social outcomes of the students in their care. The appreciation from the School’s student leaders to the staff was greatly appreciated.
The Year 12 students now head into a study period for their VCE exams. The first Exam, English, is on Tuesday, 24 October. I wish all our VCE students good luck with their exams. They have had the best possible preparation through Haileybury’s brilliant teachers.
It was a great pleasure to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Haileybury Tianjin, China, during the second week of September. The Tianjin campus, a boarding school for 800 students from Years 1 to 12, was a wonderful hive of activity.
Australia’s Ambassador to China, Graham Fletcher, spent an afternoon at the School and joined us for a celebratory dinner. The CEO of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, Stephen Gniel, also joined the celebrations in person. Haileybury has received outstanding support from Wuqing and Tianjin education officials and it is a thriving campus delivering great education outcomes for the students.

In the first weeks of October, students from City, Brighton, Berwick and Keysborough who are studying VCE Drama and Theatre Studies presented their performance exam. The exam takes place outside of Haileybury and is overseen by three external assessors who mark the students across a range of criteria including research, performance skills, use of space and their imaginative interpretation.
VCE Drama students had to write their own seven-minute solo for performance based on a choice of prompts and provocations. VCE Theatre Studies students selected a monologue from a prescribed list and became actor/directors or designers as they developed the script to create an intimate live performance.
On Tuesday, 21 November auditions will begin for the 2024 Senior School Musical. Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 students from City, Brighton, Berwick and Keysborough who will be in Years 9–12 in 2024 are invited to audition.
All cast hopefuls are required at the ensemble audition from 12.00 noon – 1.30 pm on 21 November. Please sign up for auditions via email.
An optional lead audition will take place in three-minute slots from 2.05 pm – 5.30 pm on the same day. These auditions are by appointment only and are optional. Once again, please email Nick Waxman to secure your spot.
Get in quick to avoid missing out!

Across the year, music events like Twilight Concert, Haileybury in Concert at Melbourne Recital Centre, campus-based Middle School concerts, Aria Night, Soirée afternoons, Jazz Nights, Junior School String concerts, musicals, VCE performance nights and, most recently, Chamber in the Chapel, provide an exceptional array of performance opportunities for students.
This Sunday will see the Music Department’s largest concert taking place — the Combined Middle School Spring Concert in Aikman Hall.
The concert will feature over 650 students from Years 5–8. Spring Concert has grown to such an extent that the event is divided into two mini concerts held on the same day. The Concert Band, Guitar Orchestra and Percussion Ensembles will perform in Concert 1 at 12.00 noon, while Strings and Choir will perform at 3.30 pm.
We expect an impressive 1,500 family members will attend across the two concerts.
My heartfelt thanks to the instrumental staff who give their time and expertise and their unwavering passion to ensure that all concerts embrace the highest possible musical experience.
A very busy term began last week, and the Music Department celebrated an outstanding night of orchestral chamber music at the Chamber in the Chapel concert on Thursday, 5 October.
While the rain pelted down outside, the 200 strong audience enjoyed performances by our finest small ensemble musicians, supplemented by performances by the String Orchestra, Chamber Brass and Viva Voce choir.
Before the concert began guests enjoyed a glass of champagne and a sweet treat and viewed an impressive collection of VCE art presented around the concert space. Despite the rain and wind outside, the chapel was warm, the art was outstanding and the musicians performed beautifully.
Special thanks to Thomas Heywood, our compere for the evening. Mr Heywood’s knowledge and passion for classical music was plain to see and hear and was much appreciated by the audience.

What does it take to create the perfect look for a major beauty brand? Here Units 3 and 4 Visual Communication Design student, Maya, shares the process she went through to redesign a well-known logo for her Unit 4 SAT folio.
My folio collaborated with Australia’s largest prestige beauty brand, MECCA. MECCA is a high touch, high service beauty company founded in Melbourne that represents over 200 of the best beauty brands in the world.
My brief was to design an original logo for MECCA and to create a limited-edition summer collection of signature packaging including MECCA gift boxes, stickers and stamped tissue paper. I designed a range of different sized triangular gift boxes that can be used for different product purposes.
In addition to the MECCA logo, I created hand-drawn surface graphics to emphasise the warm, blossoming, summertime feel of the boxes. To create the packaging, I used Adobe Illustrator for the designs and layout which I then had commercially printed on high grade silk-finished cardboard.
To complement the signature packaging, I designed stickers and tissue paper featuring my MECCA logo. The packaging you can see was perfectly created in the way I imagined for presenting a summertime collection of MECCA prestige beauty products. It was definitely rewarding to see the design come together for my final product.

Haileybury Pipes & Drums continues to buzz with excitement as our students enter interstate solo competitions outside the pipe band season. Year 10 student, Sofia, Drum Sergeant of the Senior A Band (recently crowned World Champions in Grade 3B), had two extraordinary performances at the Australian Solo Drumming Championships in Queensland, placing her on a pedestal of champions.
Competing fiercely among some of the best young talents in the country, Sofia emerged victorious in the C Grade Under 18 March, Strathspey and Reel, and the C Grade Under 18 Hornpipe and Jig. With her unmatched tempo and rhythm, Sofia was crowned the C Grade Under 18 National Champion.
The championships took place at SCOTS PGC College in Warwick, Queensland and showcased Australia’s finest pipers and drummers and marked significant milestones for the SCOTS PGC Collegians.
As the Warwick community celebrated the CelticFest Warwick, Sofia’s victory was a testament to the hard work, dedication and passion that Haileybury Pipes & Drums invest in their craft. Congratulations Sofia on a well-deserved win!

We recently farewelled our graduating class of Year 12 from Brighton with a special assembly. The Junior School students decorated ties with colours, logos and designs that encapsulate the spirit of Castlefield. These were presented to each or our Year 12 students by the Year 4 leaders. Eight of our Year 12 girls, who commenced in Reception in 2010, also returned to the Early Learning Centre to visit and reminisce.
As a School and for the staff, it is with tremendous pride that we contribute to the growth and development of our students and their achievements, success and accomplishments. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the graduates’ lives at Haileybury, at the campus where their journey began.
The Arts hold a special place at Castlefield and the benefits of embracing the Arts in education cannot be underestimated. Art, in all its forms, allows students to express themselves in unique and profound ways and provides them with a medium through which they can communicate thoughts, feelings and perspectives.
Through the process of creating art, our students develop crucial skills. They learn to observe and interpret the world around them, fostering a deeper understanding of their environment. The ability to think critically and problem-solve is honed as they make artistic decisions and overcome creative challenges. Patience and perseverance become second nature as they work on their projects that require time and dedication to complete.
Art also nurtures empathy and emotional intelligence. It encourages students to explore their emotions and to empathise with the experiences and perspectives of others. When we view a piece of art, we often connect with the artist on a personal level and gain insight into their thoughts and emotions. This fosters a sense of community and understanding among students.
On Friday, 6 October, we were thrilled to host Emerge, our first art exhibition for a number of years. We could not be prouder of the musicians who performed and of each student from ELC to Year 8 who had art on display.
Just a reminder to families that Monday, 6 November is a student-free day so students will not be required at school. Of course, Tuesday, 7 November, is the Melbourne Cup holiday.
Please ensure if you have a family commitment and need to collect your child early that this needs to be communicated to the school via the myHaileybury and placed in the student’s diary if they are in Junior School.
Just a reminder for families that South Road is the preferred pick-up and drop-off location for students in Junior and Middle Schools and the roundabout is an efficient way to collect your child.
Staff are on duty before and after school to help children remain safe within our grounds.
For Senior School students, South Road is the only drop-off and pick-up area for parents who drive their child to school. We encourage older students to walk, ride or take public transport rather than being driven to school.
Friendships play an important role in a child’s life. Returning from term break, we saw the delight as children rekindled friendships. Educators have intentionally provided environments where friendship skills are fostered and encouraged, recognising that children learn so much from each other as they partner up, communicate, cooperate, negotiate, listen, share and discuss ideas. Importantly, they have fun with each other!
“Children are moving and working with many ideas, but their most important task is to build relationships with friends. They are trying to understand what friendship is. Friendship is the way children can understand the identity of themselves and the identity of others.” Professor Loris Malaguzzi, Socio-cultural theorist.
As the sun is shining brightly, please remember the importance of protecting our children’s precious skin from harmful UV rays. We have many sunscreen stations within the ELC for families to access. We will support your child to reapply throughout the day, but all children must have sunscreen on and a hat available at the beginning of the day.
A daily UV rating, as stated by the SunSmart app, is displayed in the ELC foyer to make sure sun safety is part of our sunny adventures and so our children can shine safely and be a sunscreen superhero!
Year 1 students learnt about the benefits of recycling, reusing and repurposing and they have also been learning about plant life cycles and healthy eating. After their visit from The Curious Nutritionist, they were eager to plant some seedlings and so they made paper pots using old newspaper to plant vegie seedlings in our community garden. The garden beds are near the entrance to the pool, and everyone is welcome to pluck some herbs, to pull a leaf and propagate a succulent, to grab a green to eat, or to just dig and look for worms!
Our Preps visited Myuna Farm to wrap up their learning of the inquiry concept, ‘Everything we eat is grown on farms’.
‘I loved feeding the buffaloes. I learnt that wheat grows on farms and that gets turned into flour to make our bread’. Alex
‘I learnt about how technology can help farms. I liked seeing the parrots at the farm.’ Victoria
‘Milk comes from cows and can be turned into yoghurt, cheese and ice-cream.’ Addy
‘I saw ducks swimming around a pond. Ducks give meat and eggs.’ Sonny
‘I loved seeing the fruit bats.’ Harvey
‘I learnt how to milk a goat.’ Grace
Term 4 saw the unveiling of our great new playground in East Quad! Everyone is excited for the extra challenges and activities that it provides.
What a delight it was to have our Middle School students return this term, refreshed after their holidays, with great stories to tell and with an appreciation of the sunshine and some outdoor classes on Day 1.
Term 4 is a term of great change for our young students. It’s a time of preparation as they move towards the next year level, and we look for students to demonstrate the behaviours of the year level they will transition into. Often, this means an increase in independence, academic accountability and behaviour within the classroom and school grounds. Term 4 is an opportunity for students to keep bringing their best every day and to find success and growth in all areas of school life.
Our Years 7 and 8 students are readying themselves for exams. Through our four stages within our Culture of Learning they will hone their study skills and positive approaches to revision and demonstrate what it means to be prepared, ready, engaged and reflective of their learning. We wish them all the best for these next few weeks.
There is a lot to look forward to this term, too. Expect plenty of events and exciting opportunities from excursions and graduations to Up Day and assemblies!
As a SunSmart school, all students must wear a hat for recess and lunchtime. Please ensure your child has a labelled hat for school as hats are compulsory for Terms 1 and 4 and are encouraged during other terms, too.

In accordance with a cherished Chinese tradition, our Junior School celebrated the initiation of our Year One students 26 days into their first school year. This heart-warming event was carefully orchestrated by the Chinese department, dedicated Grade One teachers and our calligraphy staff.
The aim of the ceremony is to instil in children a sense of purpose and excitement for learning and enlightenment. It is a pivotal moment in their educational journey and paves the way for a lifetime of discovery and growth. The students captivated the audience with a mesmerising traditional dance. As a testament to their commitment to their education, they also recited an oath, pledging dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.
Haileybury values the relationships that we build with parents and Senior School recently held Parent-Teacher Interviews. These interviews are extremely important to ensure parents are kept up to date with how their children are performing and how they can improve.
The interviews gave parents an opportunity to review the first six weeks of school. For Year 12 students completing Victorian Academic Timetable subjects, it was an opportunity to review what their child needs to work on to prepare for the November examinations.
Our School’s Swimming team made a splash at the 2023 Beijing WOW Age Group LC Swimming Series Competition. Comprising Primary, Middle and Senior School swimmers, our team of eight students certainly showcased their prowess in the pool.
Among the standout performances was Angel, a Year 10 student from our Senior School, who earned a coveted spot in the final. Her dedication and skill were truly commendable.
The atmosphere throughout the competition was electric and it was a memorable experience for all involved. Our students demonstrated their commitment to the sport, getting up early and travelling far to compete against other international schools.
Congratulations to the team on their outstanding performance and we wish them luck for upcoming events.

World Teachers’ Day is the perfect opportunity to pause and celebrate the great work of every staff member who supports the teaching and learning of our Haileybury City students. Our teachers deliver brilliant teaching every day and we could not do this without the support of our wonderful staff, students and City community.
We enjoyed a special morning tea, and it was lovely to have our HPF City President, Melissa Fisher, attend to thank us all on behalf of HPF City. Our staff appreciated receiving a beautiful card from HPF City with the words: ‘Thank You from HPF City for all you do to help our kids become life-long learners. World Teachers’ Day 2023. The teachers we need for the education we want.’ The chocolate was an added bonus! Thank you to our HPF community for acknowledging the important contribution of teachers. It is a privilege to teach your amazing children and make a contribution to their present and their future.
Children in Reception have been observing and discussing our families. To foster this interest, children have had opportunities to create their families by rolling, cutting and manipulating playdough using natural materials.
This has led to discussions about our different features, such as the colour of our hair and how tall we are, as we learn about the uniqueness of our families. Children have celebrated their families as they also deepen their sense of belonging within the ELC.
Pre-Prep children have shown a keen interest in writing in recent weeks, and they have been creating non-fiction stories.
Writing requires children to use many skills, including fine motor control to move a pencil and an understanding of phonics when constructing words. High-frequency words and sentence starters have also supported children in constructing their stories.
The children have certainly enjoyed sharing their stories and written messages with their peers and educators.
Term 4 in the Junior School at City is filled with events and significant milestones. It is safe to say that our path is lined with opportunities for growth, learning and unforgettable moments, where we see our little seeds beginning to transform into mighty trees! At City, we are lucky to be able to explore outside during recess and lunch breaks. However, it is important to remember that when we venture to Flagstaff Gardens, our Inside Out Courts and even when we visit the Level 3 Terrace, we must protect our skin as warmer months approach.
Here are a few things parents can do to assist with this:
We are already seeing this happen and we commend all students for their sun safe start to the term.
The Australian Geography Competition is a contest for Australian secondary school students that assesses their geographical knowledge and skills. The competition, which was held online, aims to encourage student interest in Geography and to reward student excellence.
It is wonderful to recognise the achievement of Tristan (Year 7) and Michael (Year 8) who finished in the top 1% in their year level in Australia. Truly outstanding results!
On Friday, 13 October, we welcomed our Year 12 students back to the Middle School. As many of these students started their Haileybury journey with us, it was wonderful to recognise and celebrate the lasting legacy these students have had on our Middle School.
Throughout the morning, students competed against our Year 7 students in the Year 7 Challenge trivia, and they joined us for a special assembly where Prep students presented their own live version of Hairy Maclary and Friends. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd was reimagined to become Hairy Maclary from Hailey’bairy.
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2023, we wish you luck as you embark on your upcoming exams.

I hope everyone had a great holiday break and has settled back into school routines. This year is flying along. There were so many Term 3 activities and now the final term has arrived and brought warmer weather and lighter evenings. It is difficult not to love Melbourne at this time of year!
A new term and new season bring a change back to the summer uniform. Some of you may have found that a few items no longer fit as nicely as they did in Term 1 — or perhaps they don’t fit at all.
Alternatively, you may be a new family coming to Up Day who would like to top up your school uniform. HPF City’s final Second-hand Uniform Pop-Up Shop will be held on Up Day on Tuesday, 21 November from 8:00 am – 9:00 am and from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
We have made a few improvements to the system, based on our recent survey:
Also, a reminder that 70% of proceeds from the sale of uniforms are returned to parents and 30% goes to HPF City, which in turn benefits our Haileybury City students. A copy of the form can be found on the myHaileybury app.
On Thursday, 2 November we will hold our AGM via Zoom at 7.30 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Would you like to get involved as a Social or Class Representative? Would you like to be part of the Executive? Nomination forms will be distributed by the myHaileybury app soon.
If you have any questions, please email me and I can chat to you about the requirements. It is a wonderful way to support the School and the fabulous teaching staff we have at Haileybury City, to be involved with our community and to meet new people.
Have a great fortnight and enjoy the lovely spring nights ahead!

I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday period as we return to classes, and I am proud to announce our inaugural Wellbeing Week at HRS. This special week recognises the importance of ongoing attention to the wellbeing of our students, staff and HRS families.
This event will occur in Week 6 of Term 4, which is also Term 1A for Senior School students beginning their transition up to the next year level. The specific dates are Monday, 13 November to Friday, 17 November, which follows examination week for Middle and Senior School students.
In the ELC and Junior School there will be lunch and recess activities and some classroom activities throughout the week.
In Middle School, from Tuesday to Thursday, there will be rotational activities and special sessions run by renowned external organisations, The Man Cave and Flourish Girl.
“The Man Cave and Flourish Girl welcome all people to our workshops, in the group of their choosing as it relates to their identity. We acknowledge that the experience of gender diverse young people is extremely complex and our aim through our programs is to provide a space where all participants are free and safe to be their full selves and to be seen, heard and celebrated for the unique individual that they are. The Man Cave and Flourish Girl are very cognisant of the gendered nature of our brand names and programs, however, our focus is to support young people to become healthy and flourishing adults, as humans who contribute to their community.” Man Cave and Flourish Girl
In Senior School on the Tuesday of Wellbeing Week, we will invite Headspace to run age-appropriate workshops centred around managing friendships, anxiety and stress.
Our rotational activities will be based around the pillars of our Health and Wellbeing Framework and will include activities that Reflect, Move, Create, Action and Connect. Specially chosen recess and lunchtime activities that promote wellbeing will also take place.
There will also be parent sessions during the week so we can reach out to our entire HRS community.

Principal, Haileybury Rendall School
Our Year 5 students were delighted to welcome Haileybury City and Haileybury Pangea students to learn all about the Haileybury Hive program. Students spent time with the bees, studying their behaviour and harvesting honey. It was a fantastic and unique experience for all.
Congratulations to Seyara (Year 7) who has been chosen to represent Victoria in the National Maths Talent Quest. Her investigation is titled The Mathematic Mysteries behind the MCG. There were over 460 entries from 55 schools at State level, so this is an outstanding achievement. We wish Seyara all the very best at the national competition.
Spring has sprung in the ELC! The Reception classes have been busy observing the spring changes taking place outdoors and each class has participated in group discussions and observational drawing to create spring garden displays. Observational drawing encourages children to focus on what they see. When we look at something with the intention of drawing it, we tend to look more carefully. We truly see the shapes, patterns, perspective, colours, shadows, contours and how all the details interact.
The changing seasons have provided opportunities for learning in the Pre-Prep classrooms, and the warmer weather ignites more curiosity and enthusiasm. Pre-Preps have been exploring nature which has fueled discussions about caring for the environment and how learning can be linked to their community and home.
Children’s observations of spring have led them to look closely at environmental changes and as Term 4 progresses they will explore bugs and insects. Children will engage in discussions about the difference between bugs, insects and spiders and they will use bug catchers and magnifying glasses to closely study the world of creepy crawlies.
Exposing children to learning the ways of nature helps them understand and respect all living animals, plants and people. Activities based around the seasons create community connection for the ELC children and encourage strong interpersonal relationships across the campus.
This term, our Years 3 and 4 students will be involved in the Living and Growing Program to ensure they have access to accurate, age-appropriate information about body safety, anatomy, reproduction and puberty.
The online Parent Information Evening on Wednesday, 25 October at 7.00 pm will help support parents to be the ‘go to’ person for their child, because all children need a trusted adult at home with whom they can talk to. These evenings are connected to the in-classroom programs and are held via Zoom.
The parent session includes:
Thank you to all students for their gold coin donation to the Monash Children’s Hospital as part of Sports Dress-up Day last term. Our ELC and JS raised $416.
We have jumped back into Term 4 with some busy weeks and lovely weather!
On Friday of Week 1, we had our House Swimming Carnival. This was an electric event with students competing in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and relay races. They even had some fun in the pool with novelty races. A special mention to all students on their supportive cheering for each other, regardless of their House. We love to see this positive behavior in our Middle School.
This Friday we have our Middle School Halloween Disco from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm in the John Twist Hall. This is sure to be a fun-filled event with a DJ, fairy-floss, slushies, a pizza dinner, door prizes for the best dressed and glow paint!
We encourage all Middle School students to come along. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here or through the myHaileybury app.
A reminder for Middle School students that the two-week grace period has ended and that they are expected to wear summer uniform. This includes wearing a hat during sport, recess and lunch.

From the end of this year, parents who have children graduating at Haileybury have a wonderful opportunity to stay connected with the Haileybury community.
In 2024, the Haileybury Society will invite members to a range of events including:
Just as their children can stay engaged through the Old Haileyburians Association, former parents of Haileybury can remain in touch through the Haileybury Society. Membership is free and open to any parent whose child has graduated from Haileybury and who wishes to remain connected with the School and fellow parents. Membership includes invitations to society events, School events and sporting fixtures and other membership benefits.
Parents wishing to stay connected through the Haileybury Society are encouraged to register their preferences here.
Donations to Haileybury Foundation continue to stream in. Our students are incredibly fortunate to be in receipt of such a high-quality education that would otherwise be out of their reach.
All gifts to Haileybury Foundation are tax deductible. Our donors are having enormous impact and we have been delighted with the involvement of our community — from past parents, alumni and staff to current parents and staff.
Donations can be made here.
Thank you.

Thank you to everyone involved in making our Very Special Kids Carnival such a huge success! As a community, we raised $3,819.79.
The HPFK sausage sizzle was, as usual, a huge hit and students enjoyed their delicious sausages and drinks. Our Middle School Captains organised a spectacular lunchtime VSK Carnival with games for all ages including a ring toss, basketball challenge, lolly pong, bowling and more! VSK volunteers helped raise awareness of the charity’s great work by selling merchandise and talking to students and staff. Of course, students loved seeing Penelope, the Big Pig, and having photos taken with her.
The Very Special Kids Piggy Bank Appeal will continue to provide holistic palliative care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions across Victoria. We look forward to supporting this incredible charity again next year.
Three students from Newlands reached the final round of judging for the National History Challenge 2023.
Students selected a historical topic that interested them and researched and wrote about it. The theme for this year was ‘Continuity and Change’. Mingda (Year 7) wrote about migration to Australia while Jessie and Vivian (Year 6) created a group project about ‘Warfare through Time’.
The students attended the State Finals in Melbourne on Saturday, 16 September where they talked about their research and submissions.
The National History Challenge is offered as part of the Curious Minds program at Haileybury. Students interested in taking part in 2024 can attend the information and sign-up sessions in Term 1 next year. Announcements will be posted on the Head of School page closer to the time.
At the end of Term 3, the ELC were thrilled to see a mural emerge on the exterior wall outside the Reception S and Pre-Prep C classrooms. This meaningful piece of art was created by Aboriginal artist Simone Thomson and tells the story of our space at Haileybury Newlands ELC.
The water at the bottom represents Bunurong country, being a saltwater country, and the leaves above represent caring for country and for children.
At each corner are the camp sites. These are the homes of our families and communities.
The footprint of the kangaroo, wombat, possum and emu represent the different personalities in the groups.
These animal tracks lead to a meeting place which is the learning place where children learn from Elders.
The totems represent each room in the ELC — Rainbow Lorikeet, White Ibis, Boobook Owl, Black Swan, Little Corellas and Fairy Wren.
Finally, the journey tracks represent the tracks through the educational journey from ELC into Junior, Middle and Senior Schools and then onto adulthood.
The children were mesmerised to be part of this process and to see the canvas come to life with each brush stroke. This beautiful work will provide rich and authentic learning opportunities and connection for children in the ELC for years to come.
In Term 4, our Year 4 students will begin an essential part of their education by taking part in the SEA (Sex Education Australia) program. This program is thoughtfully designed to provide young learners with valuable information and understanding about topics related to their physical development, bodies and overall wellbeing. It will take place over three sessions across three weeks.
In preparation for the program, we will host a Year 4 parent information session via Zoom. During this session, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the program, its objectives and the content to be covered. We can address any questions or concerns to ensure everyone is comfortable with the material presented to the students.
Haileybury believes that age-appropriate sex education is an integral part of empowering students to make informed and responsible choices as they grow. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive environment for these discussions and look forward to partnering with parents so we can ensure students receive the guidance and education they need to navigate their physical and emotional development with confidence and understanding.
The Prep and Year 3 Junior School students are gearing up for an exciting aquatic adventure as they dive into their swimming program early in Term 4. This intensive two-week journey gives young swimmers vital water navigation skills and a sense of independence in the water. The primary objective is to nurture their swimming abilities while reinforcing and building on the safety skills acquired in previous years.
The program features a sequence of lessons and activities that cater to students’ varying levels of expertise. From beginners taking their first strokes to those already comfortable in the water, every child will develop their swimming prowess. They will be guided by experienced instructors who will help them refine their techniques, improve their stamina and build their confidence in the water.
Toward the end of the program, a highlight will be the swim safety lesson where students cover essential topics such as the proper use of life jackets, how to float effectively and mastering safe jumps into the pool.
Anay (Year 8) was recently selected for the RMIT Space Academy program, designed by NASA astronauts and mentored by the RMIT Space Team.
Students are split into teams and embark on a virtual astronaut training journey, learning about planetary science, orbital mechanics and robotic exploration. The Space Academy Program is delivered in collaboration with the One Giant Leap Australia Foundation and is an amazing opportunity to develop a new generation of space engineers who will contribute to Australia’s growing space industry.
As the world prepares for an exciting future in space exploration, we wish Anay all the best as he embarks on this amazing experience.
In August the Model UN team set off to the prestigious Haileybury City campus after weeks of preparing for the long-awaited conference.
We were arguing the issue of climate-induced conflict, with each person being a delegate for a different nation. Model UN was truly an encapsulating experience — I went from worrying about whether I would get a chance to speak and if I was prepared, to raising my placard and joining in the insightful discussions. The room was buzzing and full of people ready to express their stance as a delegate.
Overall, the first debate lasted about two and a half hours and I had the honour of being the Proposer — the person arguing fully for the Resolution. Sophia was my Seconder. Afterwards, we had our second debate for which we were not given any preparation time . This made everyone think on the spot and created a raw debate filled with courage and confidence from every contributing speaker.
After the conclusion of this debate, it was time for the awards, where Nishtha (United States of America) was awarded Best Participant, and I (Uganda) was honoured to be granted Best Speaker. Other titles such as Best Delegate went to other countries such as Iceland and Venezuela.
It was an extremely exciting experience and the whole room was full of fabulous ideas that were shared by everyone. I recommend Model UN to any Year 8 student who is interested in debating and politics — it’s an extraordinary day full of discussion and passion. - Milana
There was quite a buzz in the Newlands GMS last week as the Year 6 girls participated in a fundraising initiative to support the Solar Buddy program.
The students have been studying global issues and raised money to combat energy poverty. They raised an impressive $1,171 at their Sweets and Bake sale.

The annual OHA Golf Day at Southern Golf Club in September was another sell-out event with 120 players keenly taking part.
Congratulations to Jason Ellenport (OH 1987) who won the Hattam-Metherall trophy. We also applaud our runners-up: Gary Ferguson (OH 2004), Wes Evans (current parent) and Janine Wade (current parent).
Well done to Ian Clydesdale (OH 1977) our Forty Years On winner, and to Graham Leys, our staff winner, and James Connell (OH 2022) who was named best young player. We are incredibly grateful to Mercedes-Benz Berwick for their sponsorship and to all the players for a wonderful day.
Tim Doran (OH 1984) nearly scored a hole in one and was the closest to winning a Mercedes-Benz on the par 3, 16th hole.
Don’t miss your place in the field in 2024 and be in the running for a Mercedes-Benz!
In this issue of Insight, we shine a spotlight on the incredible journey of Mark Harrop (OH 1987).
Mark’s story is one of passion, dedication and a touch of serendipity. From being a Haileybury student to becoming a remarkable staff member and a proud Haileybury parent, Mark’s journey is inspiring.
As a Maths and Physical Education teacher at Newlands and Castlefield, Mark’s teaching philosophy is all about forming strong relationships with students. He does this by bringing fun and humour into the classroom and by creating an environment that inspires and engages his students. One of his former students says, “I would like to mention Mark Harrop as my favourite teacher. A great teacher!”
However, Mark’s connection to Haileybury goes beyond the classroom. He met his lovely wife, Bronwyn, at the School and they are now proud parents of three children: Jazmin (OH 2022), Jack (Year 11), and Ben (Year 9).
Mark is also part of the extraordinarily sporty Harrop family along with brothers Scott (OH 1989), Dean (OH 1996) and Brett (OH 1997). Last year, there was a Harrop representing every year level from Years 7 to 12!
Mark reflects on his teaching journey, saying, “I’ve enjoyed teaching more and more each year and I am grateful for the opportunities provided to me at Haileybury. I love how every day is different.”
Currently, Mark is doing a stellar job as Acting Head of Newlands and he continues to inspire and guide the next generation of Haileybury students on their educational journey.
Please join us in congratulating Mark Harrop on his outstanding contributions to education and to the Haileybury community!

Congratulations Jacqueline (Year 12 City) who has recently won the Whitlam Institute’s What Matters? National Writing Competition. Inspired by Gough Whitlam’s commitment to involving young people in shaping Australia’s future, the What Matters? competition is open to students in Years 5 to 12 from across the country.
Responding to the simple question ‘what matters?’, students are free to express their views on any matter that they care about. What Matters? is an opportunity to empower students to raise their voices on issues that are important to them and to know that their perspectives are valuable regardless of age, background or viewpoint.
Congratulations to Jacqueline for their winning entry.
Congratulations to Lucy (Year 12) who received 2nd prize for the speaking competition that is part of the prestigious Alliance Francaise Berthe Mouchette Competition in Victoria.
Lucy will be presented with her award in November.
Our Year 9s are now in the midst of their experiential learning program, on options or expeditions. However, before they left, a group of Year 9 girls visited Castlefield’s ELC. Our youngest Haileyburians were very excited to see the older students but the Year 9s were even more excited and enjoyed playing with the children.
Thanks to our Castlefield Head of Campus, Katrina Manson, Head of ELC, Meagan Veale, and her fabulous team for welcoming the Year 9s.
The year 9 students who took part in the ELC visit were: Eliza, Zara, Lauren, Eliza, Aliana, Ava, Matilda, Kaitlyn, Tamara, Evie, Anneliese, Kalina, Darcy, Emily and Jazz.
The referendum on Saturday, 14 October will determine whether the Constitution should recognise the First Peoples of Australia through the establishment of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
For many, this will be the first time we participate in such a crucial referendum. With a significant portion of Haileybury’s Year 12 cohort now eligible to cast their votes, we recognised the need to provide a solid foundation of facts to help guide choices and navigate any misleading information and bias on social media platforms.
Selecting the right individual to provide us with an educated yet unbiased perspective on the Voice was not an easy task. We aimed not to persuade, but to inform. We were fortunate that Old Haileyburian, Honourable Justice Lex Lasry (OH 1966), accepted our invitation to join us in Aikman Hall on Tuesday, 3 October for a presentation and panel discussion.
During his visit, Honourable Justice Lasry provided a comprehensive presentation that shed light on the legislative relevance of the Voice and the potential judicial ramifications of both possible outcomes of the referendum. His expertise and impartiality brought a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
Following the presentation, there was a dynamic Q&A session. Questions were designed to cover all aspects of the topic, enabling students to approach this referendum with the necessary tools to make an informed choice. Issues such as how to avoid misinformation and what are credible sources for information were discussed.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Justice Lasry for revisiting his AlmaMater. His presence and expertise have equipped the next generation of Haileyburians with the knowledge and perspective required to step into the polling booths and make an impartial, informed decision on referendum day.
As we approach this momentous event in our nation’s history, we encourage each member of our community to exercise their right to vote thoughtfully and responsibly.
Finally, summer uniform may be worn in Terms 4, 1A and 2. Year 12s are required to wear full winter uniform for graduation.

Zachary (Year 8) was selected for Hockey Victoria’s U13 state squad and represented Victoria at the Australian National U13 Hockey Carnival in Newcastle in late September. Zachary has had a tremendous year in hockey so far, having represented the Eastern Metro Hotshots team at the Junior State Championships in July. Subsequently, he was selected into the Hockey Victoria High Performance Academy. We wish Zachary all the very best.
Blake (Year 12) and Henry (Year 8) have represented Victoria at the School Sport Australia Diving Championships. Blake was appointed Captain of Victoria and won bronze in the platform competition, despite nursing an ankle injury incurred while playing rugby. Henry narrowly missed out on a bronze medal of his own. Congratulations to both athletes.

Online news from Haileybury

The price includes champagne on arrival, a sumptuous three-course meal and free entry into our lucky door prizes. So, lock it in and organise a table for you and your friends — it will be a great night!
If your summer uniforms need a refresh for Term 4, or if you have some summer uniforms you are ready to sell, pop into the Second-hand Uniform Shop! Every Wednesday you will find Di and Kelly at the SHUS from 8.15 am – 10.45 am. The SHUS is always looking for help, so if you have an hour to spare on a Wednesday to give Di and Kelly a hand, please contact them via email.

Dr Nicholas Grigsby
Deputy Principal
Head of Senior Schools
Sean Allcock
Director of Haileybury Sport
In the spirit of reconciliation, Haileybury acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
