All abuzz!

Our Year 5 students were delighted to welcome Haileybury City and Haileybury Pangea students to learn all about the Haileybury Hive program. Students spent time with the bees, studying their behaviour and harvesting honey. It was a fantastic and unique experience for all.

Exceptional student achievement

Congratulations to Seyara (Year 7) who has been chosen to represent Victoria in the National Maths Talent Quest. Her investigation is titled The Mathematic Mysteries behind the MCG. There were over 460 entries from 55 schools at State level, so this is an outstanding achievement. We wish Seyara all the very best at the national competition.

Early Learning Centre

Spring has sprung in the ELC! The Reception classes have been busy observing the spring changes taking place outdoors and each class has participated in group discussions and observational drawing to create spring garden displays. Observational drawing encourages children to focus on what they see. When we look at something with the intention of drawing it, we tend to look more carefully. We truly see the shapes, patterns, perspective, colours, shadows, contours and how all the details interact.

The changing seasons have provided opportunities for learning in the Pre-Prep classrooms, and the warmer weather ignites more curiosity and enthusiasm. Pre-Preps have been exploring nature which has fueled discussions about caring for the environment and how learning can be linked to their community and home.

Children’s observations of spring have led them to look closely at environmental changes and as Term 4 progresses they will explore bugs and insects. Children will engage in discussions about the difference between bugs, insects and spiders and they will use bug catchers and magnifying glasses to closely study the world of creepy crawlies.

Exposing children to learning the ways of nature helps them understand and respect all living animals, plants and people. Activities based around the seasons create community connection for the ELC children and encourage strong interpersonal relationships across the campus.

Junior School

Living and Growing Program – Years 3 & 4

This term, our Years 3 and 4 students will be involved in the Living and Growing Program to ensure they have access to accurate, age-appropriate information about body safety, anatomy, reproduction and puberty.

The online Parent Information Evening on Wednesday, 25 October at 7.00 pm will help support parents to be the ‘go to’ person for their child, because all children need a trusted adult at home with whom they can talk to. These evenings are connected to the in-classroom programs and are held via Zoom.

The parent session includes:

• what will, and will not, be covered in our classroom programs, and the language educators use to talk about certain topics
• how we are inclusive
• why it is important to talk to your child at home
• tips on how to talk, what to say and when, and how much to say
• how to kick-start or continue conversations at home
• how to answer difficult or uncomfortable questions
• what to do when you get caught unprepared by a tricky question
• where to go for further information and support.

Sports Dress-up Day fundraiser

Thank you to all students for their gold coin donation to the Monash Children’s Hospital as part of Sports Dress-up Day last term. Our ELC and JS raised $416.

Middle School

We have jumped back into Term 4 with some busy weeks and lovely weather!

On Friday of Week 1, we had our House Swimming Carnival. This was an electric event with students competing in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and relay races. They even had some fun in the pool with novelty races. A special mention to all students on their supportive cheering for each other, regardless of their House. We love to see this positive behavior in our Middle School.

This Friday we have our Middle School Halloween Disco from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm in the John Twist Hall. This is sure to be a fun-filled event with a DJ, fairy-floss, slushies, a pizza dinner, door prizes for the best dressed and glow paint!

We encourage all Middle School students to come along. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here or through the myHaileybury app.

A reminder for Middle School students that the two-week grace period has ended and that they are expected to wear summer uniform. This includes wearing a hat during sport, recess and lunch.
