Online news from Haileybury 20 May 2024
AERO's recent report aligns with Haileybury’s approach to classroom behaviour, emphasising rules, routines, and clear expectations. Since 2008, this focus has improved student outcomes.
The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has released a report on the best methods to have sound classroom behaviour in Australian schools. It is pleasing, and no surprise, that Haileybury’s approach strongly correlates with the research of AERO.
One of the factors that has contributed to the decline of Australian student performance in literacy and numeracy over the past 20 years has been the lowering in standards of classroom behaviour across Australian schools.
Australia has been ranked 69 out of 76 countries and jurisdictions in classroom behaviour in the Program for International Student Assessment conducted by the OECD. Since Haileybury introduced evidence-based practice at the core of its classroom delivery in 2008, maintaining high standards of classroom behaviour has been of the highest priority. It leads to improved focus for students and enhanced outcomes for all.
As AERO notes, somewhat self-evidently:
“Rules and routines can be used to foster a learning-focused environment by establishing positive teacher student relationships, high expectations for student behaviour, clear communication and by providing structure, consistency and predictability.”
The key principles of the AERO report are the key elements followed by Haileybury’s teachers.
These are:
Adhering to these principles and supporting teachers in maintaining productive classroom behaviour of students is essential to the individual and collective success of students.
If we are to maintain these standards of behaviour, which make such a strong contribution to the exceptional academic outcomes of Haileybury students, then we need the full support of the whole parent community. Student outcomes are enhanced when the School, teachers, parents and students are on the same page with regard to behavioural expectation.
We must be unified in the support for Haileybury’s brilliant teachers to uphold the standards that will allow students to have a disciplined, focused classroom to allow them to reach their academic potential.
For those interested, a range of information on classroom management can be found at the AERO website.
The CEO of AERO Dr Jenny Donovan will be the keynote speaker to all Haileybury teaching staff at the start of Term 3.

Haileybury’s diving teams are going from strength to strength, most recently at the highly competitive APS Combined Diving meet at MSAC in Melbourne.
The Haileybury Boys team came an impressive second in the APS Boys competition overall and scored 146 points, finishing just behind St Kevin’s College with 163 points.
Meanwhile, the girls team finished third overall with 135 points in the APS Girls Combined Diving competition, with young diver, Ashley (Year 7) finishing third in the Under 14A Division.
This caps off a successful 2024 summer sport season, with both the girls and boys diving teams achieving some inspiring performances — including several personal best efforts — throughout their meets.
Year 10 student Frank won first place in the Under 16 3 metre A Division while Henry (Year 9) took second place in the Boys Under 15A Division.
Frank has been diving for six years and chose the sport for its physical and mental challenges. In April, he also competed at the International Youth Diving meet in Dresden, Germany — one of the biggest international events for junior diving.
“Many European, American and Asian countries compete but it was my first ever international event. My aim was to learn from other countries and athletes by observing how they go about their competitions and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to represent my country and my school”FRANK (YEAR 10)
“My ultimate goal is to win medals internationally and to represent Australia and Haileybury at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games.
Henry first took the plunge at Haileybury in Year 7 and devotes 16 hours a week to honing his diving skills.
“I enjoy testing myself and my body, and I like the feeling of accelerating through the air from the platforms. After graduating from Haileybury, I hope to continue my academic and diving career at an American university”HENRY (YEAR 9)
Other students who achieved excellent results were: Luis (3rd) Under 17A, Liam (3rd) in the Boys Open 3 metre Diving A Division, Tommas (2nd) Under 16B, Patrick (2nd) in the Boys Open 3 metre Diving B Division, and Addison (4th) Under 17B.
William (3rd) Under 14A, Oliver (2nd) Under 14B, and Ben (3rd) Under 15B all made their impressive APS debuts.
“These were amazing results, and the diving team has gone from strength to strength in recent years,” says Head of Diving (Boys) and 1st Team Manager, Jason Ellul.
“Since then, the team has gone about rebuilding, developing and welcoming new students. We’ve fostered a strong community feeling within our sport. I’m immensely proud of what the team has achieved this year, and I am very excited about how far they might go next season!”
The Haileybury Girls team are also creating waves in the diving pool with some inspiring talent coming through the ranks.
“Ashley was part of our Diving Development Squad and half-way through the season this year, the coaches decided she was ready to join our 1st team. She performed extremely well on APS Finals Day, and this has been a great first season of diving for her,” says Briony Pepper, Head of Diving (Girls) and 1st Team Manager.
Ashley, who is in Year 7 at Castlefield, is a gymnast who decided to try diving because she thought it looked like it would be fun.
“I feel amazing after performing a great dive. I’m hoping to get better and better and to have more dives in the next couple of years”ASHLEY (YEAR 7)
Mimi is also part of the Haileybury Girls Diving team and earned fifth place in the Girls Open 3 metre Diving A Division. She began diving in 2021 and is currently in Year 12.
“I was inspired to start diving after watching a friend dive for several years. I have a background in gymnastics, and I thought diving would be a fun sport to do with a great community of students,” says Mimi.
Other achievers in the pool were: Zoe (3rd) Girls Under 14B, Zahara (5th) Girls Under 15B, Lily (4th) Under 15A, Maya (2nd) Under 16B, Olivia (2nd) Under 16A, Makenzie (4th) Under 17B and Sophia (5th) Under 17A.
Brianna (Year 12) earned second place in the Girls Open 3 metre Diving B Division.
Diving is one of around 30 sports available to Haileybury students from Years 7 to 12.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of The Addams Family!
Over six nights more than 3,000 members of our community came out to support this deliciously ghoulish musical.
Sold out shows, standing ovations, tears of laughter and shrieks of delight! The Addams Family broke all Haileybury records and created something magical on stage. The show had a hugely skilled and large cast and crew (over 100 students involved), large numbers of audience and a wonderful design that spanned stage, foyer, marketing and social media.
Addams was a joy! A huge team of theatre, dance, art, facilities, grounds, IT, science and music staff worked collaboratively to bring this wonderful show to life. Every campus was represented and so many people came out to support this live theatre event.
If you did not get a chance to come and see the show, here are some of the surprises you missed!

Head of Drama and Theatre Studies
Term 2 has been a productive time within the Music department. Alongside the wonderful success of The Addams Family musical, Senior School ensembles have been diligently rehearsing for their first major concert of the year.
On Thursday 6 June the Instrumental Music department will host the Senior School Winter Concert in Aikman Hall. This large ensemble concert is a celebration of students who have participated in the music program for an extended period. The majority of performing students will have taken private instrumental lessons for more than five years. Repertoire selected for performance approaches professional standard.
The ensembles to be featured include: Symphony Orchestra, Haileybury Singers, String Symphonia, Chamber Brass, Viva Voce, Symphonic Band, Contemporary Singers, Wind Symphony, Guitar Ensemble and Stage Band.
Just before the concert, Haileybury jazz program students will perform in the Aikman Foyer. Light refreshments, including soup (in cups) and hot chocolate will be served.
I would encourage all Haileybury parents, regardless of whether their child/children are in Junior, Middle or Senior School, to consider attending this concert. The concert begins at 7.00 pm (concludes at 8.30 pm), the standard will be very high, the program diverse and entry is free.
In the week after Winter Concert many of our outstanding classical vocalists will attend a masterclass event in preparation for Aria Night, that will occur in week two of Term 3.
Held in the David Bradshaw Chapel at Keysborough, Aria night, which is a vocal competition, will see nine vocal students, finalists, each perform two works; one a prescribed work and the other an item of their own choice. A truly inspiring event, Aria Night is one to put in the calendar ASAP.
In the last fortnight of this term, Middle School students also get an opportunity to take the stage as part of their large ensemble concert series. With four concerts set to occur, one for each campus, the series is both a busy and rewarding time for staff and students.
Crucially, Middle School concerts provide a vital opportunity for students to perform, often for their first time, before a large audience in a formal atmosphere. Students enjoy the opportunity to show the broader Haileybury community their collaborative skills as emerging young musicians. I hope to see you there!
Rod Marshall
Director of Performing Arts & Head of Haileybury Music
Year 9 Media students have enjoyed the opportunity to begin media production in the studio.
In their recent task, students, including Jenna Wade, dived into dynamic production experiments, exploring the impact of different sound profiles on microphones.
Through these experiments, students not only honed their audio recording skills but also mastered the art of post-production editing, elevating their creations to professional-grade quality.
The opportunity for our students to access the studio and the industry knowledge of our highly qualified staff means they can develop their own expertise to make informed choices, fostering creativity and innovation along the way.

28 April 2024, marked a remarkable day for the Haileybury Pipes & Drums as our students showcased their skills and passion at the Haileybury Solo Piping Competition. The event was a significant milestone, not just for the participants but for our music program, which continues to thrive under dedicated guidance and practice.
Jessie (Year 11), one of our standout performers, excelled brilliantly, clinching the top spot in both the C grade March and Hornpipe & Jig categories. She also secured the runner-up position in the C grade Strathspey & Reel. Jessie’s performances were excellent in a very contested grade of six other C Grade pipers.
Dylan (Year 3) also made his mark among a larger group of 15 contestants, this time in the Novice/Beginner grade. Dylan placed 4th in his March, 2nd in the Slow Air, and 3rd in his Piobaireachd. His achievements reflect the hard work he has put towards his piping this year, and we can’t wait to see the bright future he has ahead.
As we celebrate these successes, we also look forward to future challenges and opportunities. Our students are gearing up for the upcoming solo piping contests at Ballarat, Scotch College, and PLC. These events will be another platform for them to demonstrate their technical playing and for us to reinforce the strength of our piping program.

Students across the Junior and Middle School had their pockets jingling and taste buds tingling as the Year 8s showcased their entrepreneurial skills at the much-awaited Startup Makers Market!
On Friday, 17 May, across the Gym and Dickinson Hall, our Year 8 students unveiled the market-style creations they had created in Startup, all with a fantastic sustainability twist! From upcycled goodies to eco-friendly marvels, there were over 60 stalls with something for everyone to love and cherish. From arcade games to homemade soap bars, snow cones to designer pins, and everything in between—like hot chocolates, tote bags, and brownies—the market offered a delightful array of sustainable delights. All items were crafted with love and sustainability in mind, ensuring you could shop guilt-free while supporting our budding Year 8 entrepreneurs. And it was for a great cause, with 50% of all the profits sent to our chosen charity, St Kilda Mums.
We have a fabulous roundabout system within our gates and encourage parents to utilise the South Road entrance for drop off and pick up. Some congestion is created when families are attempting to pick up along South Road, rather than at the roundabout within the School.
I remind families to avoid blocking both lanes on South Road when attempting to join the queue entering the School property and to please avoid double parking along South Road waiting for your child/ren to appear. There is a bike lane that is being blocked when this happens.
We thank our families for being considerate of the parking signs in our surrounding streets and respectful of our neighbours’ properties. The safety of our students is paramount and when they are unable to be picked up at the curb, as cars are parked, it can be dangerous.
The front of the School on South Road is a two-minute ‘kiss and go’ zone, hence parents should not be leaving their cars unattended.
The ELC welcomed mums to ‘stay and play’ to celebrate Mother’s Day. The children were so proud to show their mums their indoor and outdoor learning environments, pamper them and give them a special handmade gift they had been working on.
As the seasons change, and we move through Mameet and into Beerreen, we are more aware of health, wellness and hygiene. Children are reminded about self-care when blowing their nose, coughing and sneezing, and effective hand washing. Families are reminded to keep unwell children at home to recover, and keep the ELC a safe and well learning environment for all.
Wellness Wednesday continues to be a great day where the whole ELC comes together on Clark oval for our Acknowledgement and some physical and social wellbeing as we walk, run and connect around the track. We love extending this to our families and enjoy welcoming parents to join us. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like to be part of this regular community event.
East Quad has been an autumn wonderland this term. It has been wonderful to see all the creative ways the children can play with leaves! From creating huge nests to synchronised leaf throwing, our students have enjoyed the changing play environment. Another popular recess activity is our Wednesday dance sessions. Led by Mrs Wittels, teachers and students love to get moving together. Recess and lunch-time clubs run by House Captains always prove popular too.
We love creating connections across the Castlefield campus and one way we are doing that this term is by having our Year 9 girls read to our Junior School children. Any Prep – Year 4 student can come along on Tuesday mornings between 8.10 am – 8.25 am. Depending on the weather, the Reading Club will either be outside the library in the early sunshine or inside the library in the warmth. It is a great way to start the day!
Assessment, feedback and growth are all interrelated, and our Years 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to gauge their progress with our upcoming exams. These exams (Geography and semester-based electives) aim to provide students with the platform to detail their understanding of their subject and to experience all that comes with sitting formal assessments.
Revision, homework clubs, teacher student feedback and applying yourself is all part of preparation as our exam schedule nears. We encourage all our students to maximise use of our revision help desks, that are facilitated by our amazing staff, so they can ask questions to their teachers and work through content as they prepare for the examination period. Semester 2 examinable subjects, that are held at the end of the year, will be Maths, English, Science, History, Languages and semester-based electives. We wish our Years 7 and 8 students the best of luck for their exams.
We love our mums and the unconditional love they provide us. We, Middle School, could not do what we did without the love, care and support of mums!
We were so pleased that our Middle School Mother’s Day celebration was a huge success, with our Castlefield mums and special friends coming together to enjoy the company of their child and friends. It was lovely to see so many friendly faces catching up, enjoying our breakfast treats or even getting involved with some of our games with their children.
We hope all our mums had an amazing Mother’s Day and were spoilt with time, gifts or the world’s biggest hug!

Head of Castlefield (Brighton)
Thank you to the incredible parents who gave up their time to assist with the HPFC Mother’s Day Stall. Without your support these events would not be possible.
We will be looking for more helpers for the Father’s Day Stall in September. Keep an eye on the myHaileybury app for more opportunities to get involved.

On Friday, 26 April, the Haileybury City community returned to Flagstaff Gardens to commemorate Anzac Day. Students from Prep to Year 8 gathered to honour all those who have served in Australian forces, both in conflicts and in peacekeeping missions over the past century. In the minute’s silence, students reflected on the names of the Old Haileyburians who served our nation in the World Wars and on the messages of our student leaders. The service concluded with the Brass Ensemble who performed the Last Post, Reveille and the National Anthem. Lest we forget.
The campus was full of hundreds of mothers and significant women in the lives of our ELC to Year 8 students. We love hearing stories from our students about why they love these special women in their lives. Knowing they have unconditional love allows our children to feel secure in themselves. Below you will read more about the fun that was had. There were many tears of joy and happiness shed when our Junior and Middle School sang.
I thank the Heads of School and staff for organising the variety of wonderful activities and learning experiences, and to our Middle School student leaders who led the Middle School event.
For Road Safety Awareness Week, the ELC children learnt about the importance of keeping our bodies safe within the community. The children went on a mini excursion to the Basement where we noticed different road signs such as a pedestrian crossing and the speed limit of 5 km/h.
Children then practised road safety skills as we held hands, stopped, looked, listened and walked across the crossing, understanding the importance of road safety in our ELC and the wider community.
Opportunities for embedding these skills in our daily lives will continue to be fostered as children role model the correct procedures when crossing the road.
For Mother’s Day, the ELC recently celebrated and gave thanks to the mothers and significant people in their lives. The morning was filled with smiles, as well as activities shared by children, mothers and significant people and included craft and stories within our indoor and outdoor environments. A photo booth was created by the children.
Having worked hard on their gifts of appreciation for the special people who do so much for them, the children were excited to present their mother or special person with beautiful keepsakes. Thank you to everyone who joined us in this celebration.
We were delighted to welcome back the local firefighters from Fire Rescue Victoria. Located just a short distance around the corner from our vertical campus on Batman Street, it did not take long for the fire truck and firefighters to make their way to our King Street entrance. During their visit, they presented to the Preps on fire-safe behaviours and common emergency procedures. Our Preps even had the chance to explore the fire truck and its associated equipment. This special visit supported one of our Inquiry Units, ‘Our Communities Are Organised to Keep Us Safe.’
“I really liked that we got to climb up into the fire truck. It was really big.” – Zain
Our students are eagerly anticipating the return of National Simultaneous Storytime in 2024. Organised annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), this event brings together communities across the nation. A picture book, crafted by Australian authors and illustrators, is read simultaneously in various settings, including libraries, schools, preschools and homes. At our School, this event is expertly led by Ms Kuhne (Head of Library Services – City) and will see all Junior School students gathered under the fair lights on Level 3, joined by our ELC children, to participate in this cherished library event. This year’s story is Bowerbird Blues, by Aura Parker.
As the colder months approach, we kindly remind Junior School families that from Week 3 of Term 2, all students from Prep – Year 4 should wear their full winter uniform. We encourage pride in uniform attire, reflecting our community’s high standards. If needed, the HPF City Second-hand Uniform Pop-Up Shop, held in the second last week of this term, can help families. Remember, the winter uniform is required for both Terms 2 and 3. Details on the full uniform policy can be found in the ‘School Info’ section of myHaileybury.
We were delighted to celebrate our mothers and significant women on the morning of Thursday, 9 May.
This year, the guests were invited into our Middle Schools where they were greeted by the students and mingled before enjoying a delicious breakfast and hearing some meaningful speeches. From here, students and their guests went to homerooms where the Year 8s hosted some captivating activities, including some New York Times-style crossword puzzles, cards, coupons and a Booklet – all created by our Year 8 Leaders. To finish, everyone came back together again for some performances from our incredible musicians, as well as raffle prizes.
It was a wonderful morning. We thank the mothers and significant women for their presence and acknowledge the love, guidance and support they provide our students each and every day.
It was a pleasure to welcome our Year 5 families to levels 4 and 5 as they participated in a lesson with their Middle School child. In both the Boys and Girls Middle Schools, English was the focus. Year 5.1 developed their reading comprehension skills through Haileybury’s bespoke ‘Code Crackers’ program while Year 5A continued to explore the class novel Wonder, particularly the characteristics of the protagonist, and aligned this with how they are wonderous.
The Middle School in Action mornings are vital as we continue to provide an environment in which our young people are given every chance to achieve their potential by ensuring that there is a strong partnership between the students, families and School. We look forward to welcoming our Years 6 and 8 families to Middle School in Action on Thursday, 30 May.
We congratulate our students on their application to their Semester 1 Exams, particularly our Year 7s who undertook a formal Haileybury examination period for the first time. We are proud of their hard work and preparation to achieve their very best, with many attending the Exam Help Desk sessions that were provided by the staff. This exam period included Geography and semester-based subjects. Studying for and sitting examinations is a skill that must be developed and Haileybury students are given numerous opportunities to do this in Middle School before they transition to Senior School.

The campus has certainly been busy with Mother’s and Significant Women’s Day celebrations in full swing. I hope that all the mums had a lovely day and felt very spoilt. It is such a lovely time of the year to spend with our mums and our children. With the many activities on at Haileybury City, we hope those who attended went away with some lovely memories.
Have you got your tickets yet for the MS Family Trivia Night on Friday, 14 June?
Preparations for the event are in full swing, with staff assisting with the questions, games being organised and popcorn being ordered. All the details on how to order food, tickets and more are on the myHaileybury app notice.
Just a reminder, it is a ticketed event. We encourage you to order your tickets early to avoid missing out. Ticket sales will close on Friday, 7 June, unless sold out prior. Don’t forget those gold coins for the games during the night!
We held an additional pop-up shop on Wednesday, 2 May between 3.00 pm and 4.00 pm, which was a very successful session. Thanks to Andrea Livingston, the SHUS team and Gabe, and the Facilities team for pulling it all together in the basement. What a great service this team of volunteers is providing.
Our next pop-up shop will be held on the Thursday, 20 and Friday, 21 June. As always, you can continue to drop off items to be sold into the blue bins at City Reception. Please ensure that a form is submitted with your items and is attached to all bundles (a photocopy of the form is great if you have multiple items on hangers or bags). Items without forms will be treated as a donation. Should you have any queries, please email hpfcity@haileybury.com.au.
Have a great month and enjoy the lovely autumn sunshine.

It is a great pleasure to announce that Sam (Year 10) and Madison (Year 10) have won the Principal’s Exchange to Haileybury, Melbourne for Term 3 this year.
This means that Sam and Madison will move to Melbourne from Darwin for the term and attend all their classes down south. This exchange began last year when Stephanie (Year 11) joined the Keysborough campus and Felix (Year 11) joined the Brighton campus. At the same time, Anthony (Year 11) and Sebastian (Year 11) (both from the City campus) came up to HRS and studied here while living in our outstanding boarding facility. Both boys wanted to stay longer than a term!
Sam is an excellent swimmer and is looking forward to joining the winter swimming team in Melbourne and will be keen to get involved in other extra-curricular opportunities. He is studying Year 10 Maths, English, Science and Units 1 and 2 Modern History, Biology and Psychology. It is great to know that his counterparts in Haileybury, Melbourne study the same course content and operate with a similar timeline to our VCE programs in Darwin.
Madison is a keen netballer and is hoping to join a Haileybury team once she arrives. She enjoys all her studies and is completing VCE Units 1 and 2 Modern History and Physical Education along with her standard Year 10 Subjects.
Sam and Maddie are very excited about joining student life in Melbourne for Term 3 and are planning ways to combat the colder weather as best they can. Part of their exchange experience is to join a homestay family, so please contact Ms Cath McCraith (Head of Senior Boys) or Ms Anna Wassell (Head of Senior Girls) if you would like more information.
We look forward to continued opportunities between our Darwin and Melbourne campuses for staff and students who are part of our unique ‘One Haileybury’ brand.
Andrew McGregor
Principal, Haileybury Rendall School
Our community is the heart of who we are and what we strive to be — a source of strength, connection and unity.
It was wonderful to witness the unity and spirit of our school community as we came together to celebrate our mothers and significant others. We had some fabulous events from ELC to Year 8, that enabled our students to create memorable, shared experiences.
Another exciting aspect of being part of Haileybury is the chance to unite with fellow students from other campuses. This opportunity not only expands our social circles, but also enriches our experiences through diverse perspectives and shared traditions.
We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome all campuses from the broader Haileybury community as we host the Middle School Cross Country. By coming together, we strengthen our bonds, celebrate our diversity, and foster a sense of belonging that transcends individual campuses. The cross country event promises to deepen connections across our entire Haileybury family, enriching the fabric of our community with shared experiences and collective achievements.
A healthy identity is the cornerstone to children’s learning, development, and wellbeing. Children learn about themselves and construct their own identity within the context of relationships with other children, their families and communities. Special celebrations within the ELC environment, such as Mother’s Day, can be a heartwarming experience that strengthens relationships between children, families and the school community.
On Monday, 6 May the ELC children visited the Mother’s Day stall run by the HPFE. The children were full of smiles as they looked eagerly around to choose the most special gifts for their mum.
On Tuesday, 7 May staff opened the classroom doors, and what was waiting for the children and their mums was nothing short of amazing. From bracelet making to cookie decorating, photo booth to guess my portrait, the energy and involvement in all the planned activities across the ELC was high.
Occasions such as these are a special opportunity to bond with your child in their school environment. It is a time when the staff and children can show appreciation for the role you play in their life, highlighting your importance and impact. It creates lasting memories, as these events are often cherished and remembered fondly by adults and children.
Thank you to all the parents, children and staff for making this such a special celebration.
Thank you to all our mums and any special friends who attended our Junior School Mother’s Day morning. It is always so special to have our mums on campus and have the happy smiles of the children as they wander from activity to activity. We hope you had a fabulous time here at Edrington.
Our Prep and Year 4 students were very excited to join our Year 6 boys and girls for a Teddy Bear’s Picnic on the undercover tennis courts. There was lots of chatter about their bears, books were read, and bonding between students happened during the lunch. It was lovely to see our Junior School and Middle School come together for this activity.
The Middle School Mother’s Day event occurred last Friday, with over 200 mums, special friends and their children taking advantage of photo booths and a delicious breakfast. The Edrington Singers performed 'Stand by Me', which was superb.
During Week 8 ( 3–7 June), we will have our Year 5, Year 7 and Year 8 students out on camp. Student briefings will occur on Monday, 20 May for our Years 7 and 8 students and will be hosted by the Outdoor Education Group on campus. These sessions will provide our students with information on how to set up a tent, what clothes to wear, and how to deal with cold or wet weather.

Hello Edrington. Thank you so much to our Mother’s’ Day stall volunteers! We could not do it without you. It is always such a fun morning, and the kids love it. Special mention to Kate Haakman, who clocked up her eighth Mother’s Day stall with us this year. We hope all the mum’s loved the specially selected gifts the students chose for you.
We are ready to get our sausage sizzle skills for the Cross Campus Cross Country event coming up. We will be sizzling 2,000 sausages for all the students and staff at Edrington’s biggest event of the year! If you have an hour or two to spare, please volunteer here.
The uniform shop is open every Wednesday from 8.15 am to 10.45 am. Pop in to see Janelle for your uniform requirements. If you have some spare time to help in the Second-hand Uniform Shop, contact Janelle.

Without the support of our generous Haileybury Foundation benefactors, 32 students would not be enjoying the wonderful opportunities that are provided to them at Haileybury.
Over the past two weeks we have had the great joy of allowing our benefactors to see the impact they are providing through their Haileybury Scholarship Fund donations. We love to provide our benefactors with the opportunity to meet, catch up and spend time with the students they are supporting.
Our students receive a great thrill out of meeting their benefactors and at each of our recent events, we have provided our students with the opportunity to speak first-hand to their benefactors. The common theme amongst all of the students is how happy they are to be at Haileybury and how thankful they are for the gift of their education — in all cases this would not have been possible without the foresight and generosity of our benefactors.
Thank you to all our donors for helping to change lives forever.

Director of Development & Alumni Relations
Thank you to all our community members who participated in our recent Mother’s Day events across our ELC, Junior and Middle Schools. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate those special ones in our lives. Your presence contributed to the success of the event and made it a joyous and meaningful occasion. I appreciate your support and involvement in our community activities. Once again, thank you for joining us and for making the celebration such a memorable experience.
Newlands will be celebrating Languages Week in Week 9 (11–14 June). This is a vibrant celebration that honours the diversity of languages and cultures across our Haileybury community.
During this week-long celebration, students and staff come together to revel in the richness of linguistic and cultural heritage through various events and activities that have been planned. Some of the highlights that Newlands will be showcasing are Auslan Workshop, Lion Dance, Taiko drumming, craft making, Petangue games and Bollywood dancing. Languages Week fosters appreciation and understanding among people of different backgrounds.
It is a time to embrace linguistic diversity, promote language learning, celebrate the beauty and significance of the myriad of languages within our Haileybury community as more that 40% of our students speak a language other than English.
The ELC strives to make a meaningful impact by channelling our efforts towards important causes in Term 2. We begin the term collecting much needed donations of toiletries for Foodbank in partnership with Open Door.
Later in the term, the ELC children will also be joining the Newlands community in the Big Freeze supporting FightMND. Social justice is not just a concept; it is a cornerstone of our commitment to our community. Through these initiatives, we are not only raising awareness but also actively working towards positive change. We teach children about social justice causes in age-appropriate ways and by participating in fundraising events, our children experience firsthand the power they hold to enact positive change in their communities. This sense of empowerment fosters a deeper connection to social justice, strengthening their commitment to making a difference.
In the Junior School, we are excited to announce that students from Years 1, 2 and 4 are eagerly anticipating their swimming sessions in Weeks 6 and 7. The recent reopening of our pool has reignited a passionate enthusiasm for getting back into the water!

It was truly heart-warming to witness the community support and comradery at the Former First XVIII Footballers event in April.
Attendees were particularly impressed with the facilities of new Langford Pavilion and thoroughly enjoyed watching the Bloods and Hearts football matches from the balcony throughout the day.
A massive shout-out to everyone involved for making it an unforgettable day!
More than 50 Old Haileyburians attended the inaugural OHA, Haileybury Foundation and Archives morning tea held in the Jim Brown Centre at Keysborough.
It was a journey through time as we showcased our extensive archives collection, listened to captivating presentations, and enjoyed a guided school tour by Year 12 students.
The team greatly appreciated all the photos and memorabilia that were brought in by our guests.
Please stay tuned for details regarding our second event in October. In the meantime, we are more than happy to have guests pop in to visit so please email if you are interested.
The Haileybury Rendall School (HRS) Melbourne dinner held earlier this month at the George on Collins restaurant was truly memorable. It was a wonderful occasion where HRS alumni living in Melbourne and former HRS staff, including Craig and Kerry Glass, came together for an evening of reconnection and reminiscing.
The message of the evening was clear, that no matter which campus of Haileybury you attended or where in the world you live, the OHA is always here to care for and support you. Once a Haileyburian. Always a Haileyburian.
It was terrific having the Old Haileyburians generational families come together a few weeks ago at the Keysborough campus to celebrate their history at Haileybury. Thank you to the nearly 150 grandparents, parents, students and staff who supported this OHA Generations Breakfast.
A special thank you to John Twist, Haileybury’s first Head of Campus at Berwick, for attending with his son, an Old Haileyburian, and grandson who is a current student.
Also, a massive shoutout to the amazingly talented Haileybury String Quartet for coming along bright and early at 7.30 am to entertain our families.
We look forward to hosting the next OHA Generations Breakfast at the City campus on Thursday, 8 August 2024.

It has been wonderful to see students taking up a range of opportunities to connect with each other and pursue their interests through Haileybury’s Curious Minds program this year.
Offerings available to students in Haileybury Pangea include Model United Nations, Debating, Mini-Masterchefs, Duke of Edinburgh’s award, $20 Boss and Digitech Explorers. Students also have the opportunity throughout the year to participate in competitions such as the Science Talent Search, and celebrations such as the upcoming LEAP Week.
We thank Haileybury’s Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Damien Meunier and Pangea’s Curious Minds Coordinator Alysia Degorski, along with the many teachers and staff involved, for making these opportunities available to Haileybury Pangea students.
Students in Years 7–11 recently undertook end of semester examinations for select courses, with all examinations taking place online using Haileybury Pangea’s online assessment protocols.
Semester examinations are an important component of academic courses, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding while building skills and strategies for examinations, which become increasingly important as students progress through the VCE.
We extend our appreciation to teachers, Heads of Department, Digital Learning Leader Geoff Orton, the IT team and examination supervisors for their support of students throughout this period.
Students in Years 8–12 will commence the Semester 2 timetable on Monday 20 May.

The Pre-Senior Social Impact Ventures students have been busy preparing and implementing their social impact initiatives early this term. The elective course is designed to give students an immersive experience in organising and implementing an initiative that creates social change. In a bid to fulfil the class mission to empower the community to be more sustainable, Year 9 students Oliver, Jeremy and Sobash have held their ‘Plant Palooza’ today at Newlands.
This event was designed to teach the Year 5 students about the importance of green spaces, and the positive effect they can have on mental health and reducing carbon emissions. There was a buzz in the room, highlighting the younger students’ level of engagement and excitement about participating in the initiative. Other student led initiatives being implemented are power saving and recycling campaigns and a walk to school day. The Year 9 students are learning a lot about marketing, leadership, teamwork, project and event management, not to mention how they can create a positive impact in their community.
We are delighted to announce that Dinith (Year 11) has been selected as a winner of the Apple Swift Student Challenge 2024. As part of this prestigious recognition, he has been invited to attend the WWDC24 Special Event at Apple Park in June. This is an incredible opportunity for him to showcase his talents and immerse himself in the world of technology. We wish Dinith all the best.
Reflection: Andi (Year 11) Silver DOE Award
Have you ever hiked through thorny trails, leech-infested jungle, wide river rapids, and up rocky mountains for four days? Because this is what nine of us Haileybury students (all of us completing our Duke of Edinburgh programs) faced during our Term 1 holidays. I could talk about how difficult it was to hike with hefty packs for thirteen hours on Day 2, or how toiling it was to sleep in the middle of a mountain when we lost our trail, but I’ll also talk about how all nine of us felt much more alive during those four days. Aided by the expertise of Ms Visick and our OEG instructor Gus, the trip was very much a learning experience as well as a physical challenge. We learned about map orientation, topography, and geographic features, yet we also learned how to push ourselves past our comfort zones. We made many great memories on the trip, from accidentally cooking curry that was too spicy to eat, to nursing our leech bites, as well as discussing our grand plans for our return back to civilisation. On the final day, we woke up at 5.00 am to make up for our early end to Day 3; as we travelled up steep dirt roads for our final stretch, I’ll never forget about how the cool white mist enshrouded us. Ultimately, this trip was not easy, nor was it always fun — but it was a trip where we became stronger. And the friends we made along the way helped.
The DOE award is offered to all students who are 14 years old or older. If you have any enquiries email Ms Visick or check out the award website.
With the completion of the first stage of the Level 9 redevelopment, Haileybury City recently held its Unit 1 and Year 10 exams in the new examination centre on that floor. This is the same venue which will hold the GAT on Tuesday, 18 June and will hold the end of year VCE examinations. It does, without doubt, have the best views of any examination centre.
Two new classrooms and a new Year 12 Common Space will follow shortly.
As the semester draws to a close, preparation is essential for math examinations, and binding notes is an essential part of this process. It involves more than just compiling papers; it involves organizing everything and creating a structured environment for learning.
Using Ms Nguyens incredible binding kit, we as a class have been able to create our bound notes, following all the requirements for the exam and like always, making them look extraordinary. It serves as a visual reminder of your dedication to giving it your all as well. Therefore, even though it can seem like a simple task, binding notes is crucial to being prepared to confidently tackle our Methods exam, especially when it comes to the end of a semester.
The preparation for exams gets more difficult by the minute, but being ensured of support from family and friends, teachers and those around you, allows for less stress to be formulated during this time and amazing exam results to follow. As Methods for Semester 1 comes to an end, it is important to acknowledge our hard work and efforts as we prepare for the beginning of Semester 2 later in the term.
The subject selection process will begin in Term 2 for students in Years 9, 10 and 11.
We are delighted to announce the Senior School Subject Expo, live and in-person at Keysborough Senior School. The event will take place from 3.00 pm – 7.30 pm on Tuesday, 21 May in the Langford Pavilion and Music Annex.
From the wonders of Science to the enchanting realms of Literature, the intricacies of Mathematics to the vibrant tapestries of History and the Creative Arts — there are subjects for everyone, and we invite you to speak directly with educators to ensure every subject you select heeds your needs and passions.
It may be helpful to visit VTAC (the centralised admissions centre for most undergraduate university and TAFE courses) and the VCAA (the body that sets guidelines for what students from Prep to Year 12 learn in Victorian schools). Please remember that you can always make an appointment for yourself and your child with one of our Careers advisors to discuss these matters. Your child’s Head of House or relevant Head of Pre-Senior can help you to make these appointments.
Jake (Year 11) is making waves in the competitive world of motorsport, specifically in the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge championship. This championship, while lesser known than the Carrera Cup, is a crucial stepping-stone for up-and-coming drivers looking to establish themselves in the racing scene. Jake is part of a talented pool of 26 junior drivers from Australia and New Zealand who have shown their prowess in various smaller categories, such as karting, Formula cars and Toyota 86 racing. What sets this championship apart is the level playing field it offers; every driver competes in a controlled car where every part is identical, ensuring that success is solely based on skill and strategy.
In his recent race at Philip Island, Jake demonstrated his potential by finishing 6th in qualifying and an impressive 5th in race 3. These results are a testament to his hard work and dedication to his craft, and his team’s support. Jake’s aspirations extend beyond the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge championship. He has his sights set on the Carrera Cup and, ultimately, the prestigious Porsche Supercup in Europe. The Supercup is a highly coveted championship that attracts the best drivers from around the world and runs alongside Formula 1 events. Jake understands the challenges ahead and the fierce competition he faces, not just from his fellow junior drivers in Australia but also from the best drivers across the globe. However, with his talent, determination, and the support of his team, Jake is well on his way to achieving his dream of competing at the highest levels of motorsport.

On Sunday 28 April, more than 120 Dance students from Year 7 through to Year 12 travelled to Rowville Secondary College to compete in the 2024 Dance Star Regional Finals.
Haileybury enjoyed a wonderful day competing against many schools, dance schools and clubs in large and competitive sections. The students deserve much praise for training hard in the lead-up to the competition and for giving their all on stage with outstanding performances. The results that the students achieved speak for themselves and are a testament to the hard work, time, effort, passion and dedication of our amazing students and coaching staff.
Of the 26 Haileybury dance teams and soloists that competed at Regionals, all qualified for the State Championships to be held at the start of June. Special mentions must go to:
We would like to thank all our students, coaches and coordinators for a wonderful weekend at Regionals and we wish them the very best as they now commence their preparations for State Finals.
Congratulations to Haileybury Athletes who proudly represented Victoria at the recent Australian Junior Athletic Championships in Adelaide! Their hard work throughout the season and facing tough competition from across the country led to some remarkable performances.
Matty impressed with a remarkable haul of six medals (3 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze) across seven events in the U16 age category. Jett put in a strong performance, falling just two seconds short of a silver medal in the steeplechase, an event he does not often participate in. Julia secured a top-10 finish in the 200m and narrowly missed the final by just 0.03 seconds.
Congratulations to Andy (Year 5) and Yee (Year 5) who recently competed in the SSV State Swimming Championships and swam amazingly.

Online news from Haileybury 20 May 2024
The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has released a report on the best methods to have sound classroom behaviour in Australian schools.

Katrina Manson

In week 8, all students are eagerly anticipating the Cyber Safety Incursion. This event is dedicated to empowering every young person to proactively manage their digital safety and wellbeing. Through engaging and informative education, our students will learn essential skills to navigate the online world securely and confidently. These initiatives are not only fun but also integral to fostering a safe and aware digital environment for our students.
LEAP week’s focus is on enriching our students’ lives through immersive and engaging experiences. From virtual tours of renowned art galleries to captivating performances by our talented music students. This year, our focus shines brightly on the Arts, inviting students into a world of creativity, expression and discovery.
The annual Newlands market offers $20 Boss stalls with an array of innovative goods. Our focus on encouraging sustainable practices is threaded throughout our marketplace.
Interactive programs like Model United Nations simulations, Tournament of the Minds and National History Challenge Tasters, Debating, Drama Club Theatre Sports, and art challenges inspired by Da Vinci’s work. Join our quizzes hosted by the LEAP Captains, offering a chance to test knowledge and win exciting prizes.
We invite students, teachers and the community to celebrate the power of art, music, learning and community during LEAP Week 2024. Let’s leap into a world of endless possibilities together!
Are you an aspiring chef? Haileybury Mini MasterChef might be just what you are looking for. Ideal for students from Years 5–8, this program will give you lifelong skills.
Each Monday at 5.30 pm on Zoom, join Mrs Rigg and cook a meal for your family. Together we make a delicious and healthy two course meal for you and your family to enjoy. You will learn to follow recipes, measure ingredients and all sorts of different cooking techniques.

With the commencement of the winter season, it is an opportunity to reaffirm our responsibilities as part of our Community Code of Conduct. This code of conduct reflects our values and expectations for how we treat each other both online and in-person, and how we support our children’s learning and wellbeing. We ask that you always be supportive, trusting and respectful of one another, and that you communicate with us if you have any concerns or questions. By working together, we can create a safe and positive environment for our children to thrive. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.
