Online news from Haileybury
The 2023 VCE exam period is in full swing and, as a VCE specialist school, Haileybury continues to offer students in Melbourne and further afield opportunities to study a wide range of VCE subjects.
Haileybury’s Year 12 students graduated in style, celebrating appropriately and showing great respect for their peers, the teachers and staff of Haileybury, and their families. Now, along with all students doing VCE Units 3 and 4 subjects, they are well into their final exams.
Haileybury is a VCE specialist school delivering the certificate in Melbourne, online through Pangea, in Darwin at Haileybury Rendall School, in China at Haileybury Senior School Tianjin, and in six other Chinese cities with partner schools. We also deliver the VCE in the Philippines, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
The VCE is a very well-structured certificate and Haileybury students take full advantage of being able to take subjects across a three-year period (in Years 10–12) and the range of subjects available. Importantly, the VCE clearly rewards effort — the balance of school-based assessments moderated by the examination process works well for students and ensures the integrity of the VCE assessment process.
The VCE is also recognised by universities around the world. While the majority of Haileybury graduates continue to head to The Group of Eight universities in Australia, a significant number head to top universities in the United Kingdom and the United States.
While the Years 11 and 12 students are currently focused on the VCE exams, the Year 10s are completing work experience and the Year 9s are on the City Chase option.
The Haileybury program, including the Middle School assessment program, is structured so that on Monday, 13 November, Term 1A of the 2024 academic year can start. This gives all students from Years 8 to 12 (in 2024) a four-week study block on the new academic year before the summer break.
This is an important part of Haileybury’s commitment to ensuring that we maximise available teaching and learning time and it is a contributing factor to Haileybury students’ brilliant academic results.
I congratulate our Senior School student leaders who have been democratically elected to their positions for 2024. The full list of these exceptional students can be found here.

The Haileybury community, particularly Haileybury’s Dance Program, would like to congratulate Michaela (Year 12), who has been accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) to study Dance.
The WAAPA Dance program offers world-class training and education and produces graduates who are technically outstanding, artistically creative, adaptable and ready for a fulfilling dance career. Earning a place in the program is highly competitive and Michaela endured a tough series of auditions with hundreds of dancers from around Australia. We are so proud of your incredible achievement, Michaela, and cannot wait to hear about your adventures next year!
In the same week that Michaela received her fantastic news the VCE Dance students presented their self-devised solos for the VCAA assessors. This is a major assessment for VCE Dance, making up 50% of the overall mark. It involves conceiving, devising, refining and presenting a skills-based solo and creative exploration solo. Congratulations to our dancers for presenting skilful, poignant and impressive works.
On Tuesday, 21 November auditions will begin for the 2024 Senior School Musical. Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 students from City, Brighton, Berwick and Keysborough, who will be in Years 9–12 in 2024, are invited to audition.
All cast hopefuls are required to be at the ensemble audition from 12.00 noon – 1.30 pm on 21 November. Please sign up for auditions via email.
An optional lead audition will take place in three-minute slots from 2.05 pm – 5.30 pm on the same day. These auditions are by appointment only and are optional. Once again, please email Nick Waxman to secure your spot. Get in quick to avoid missing out!

Last weekend, Middle School musicians produced an exciting concert day of music in Aikman Hall. The Spring Concert, a grand showcase of talent and collaboration, left audiences spellbound with over 600 students delivering a symphonic feast. With its scale and artistic excellence, the musical spectacle painted a vibrant picture of the Performing Arts program at Haileybury.
Students from all Melbourne campuses pooled their skills and talents and the collaboration produced performances that filled our sizable auditorium with amazing sounds. It was not only a concert; it was a journey through musical landscapes, and the breadth of repertoire on display was impressive.
The event was so well-attended that we had two separate concerts on the same day. The 12.00 pm concert featured concert bands, brass ensemble, guitar orchestra and the percussion department. The 3.30 pm concert was a showcase of orchestras and the choral program.
The Spring Concert resonated with the performers on stage and connected with the audience. Over 700 guests filled the hall for each concert. Their presence added to the electric atmosphere and underlined the community’s unwavering support for the school’s Music program.
A celebration of unity, dedication and the vibrant spirit of Haileybury, the concerts confirmed the Performing Arts is alive and thriving at Haileybury.
Well done to everyone and thank you.

Art is a universal language that young minds embrace with enthusiasm. ELC, Junior and Middle School Art Exhibitions play a crucial role in nurturing this passion and instilling pride within students while connecting them to their community.
As Brazilian artist, Romero Britto, said, “Art is too important not to share.”
Exhibitions inspire creativity and motivate students to continue to explore their artistic talents. By sharing their work, students learn from one another and expand their horizons. Exhibiting their art boosts self-confidence by recognising their talents and encouraging them to articulate their ideas.
Art exhibitions encourage engagement and dialogue, strengthening community ties. These experiences lay the foundation for lifelong art appreciation and teach valuable life skills.
Congratulations to the staff and students at Castlefield campus who recently kicked off our exhibitions with a beautiful event that also included music, demonstrating the benefits of collaborating with the wider Arts community.
Be sure to mark your calendars and join us in fostering a love for Visual Arts and empowering the artists of tomorrow at our future ELC to Middle School exhibitions. We hope you enjoy the showcase of our young artists’ creativity as the community celebrates their talents on the following dates:
Newlands: Wednesday, 8 November
Edrington: Friday, 17 November
City: Wednesday, 29 November

October’s annual Pipes & Drums Dinner was spectacular. Celebrating Haileybury’s world-renowned Pipes & Drums program, the evening was marked with achievements and jubilation.
This year was the most successful season in the history of the program. From only 61 members in 2018, the program has experienced remarkable growth and now boasts over 130 students. 2023 was a record-setting year, welcoming 36 new competition members.
This expansion culminated in Haileybury winning a World Championship title, solidifying its place as a force to be reckoned with on the global stage, and introduced Haileybury’s third competing band comprising of our junior pipers and drummers.
This journey was not without its challenges. From defending state titles to navigating grade upgrades, the bands displayed incredible resilience and rose to each challenge, gaining placings in Novice B, Novice A, Grade 4B, Grade 4A, Grade 3B, Grade 3A and Grade 2 categories both locally and abroad. Most notably, the A band achieved a record 31 state juvenile championships and is aiming for its 32nd.
Underlying these wins is the unwavering support of Haileybury’s dedicated staff and the School leadership. A big thank you to the P&D staff who collectively conduct over 3,000 lessons, 150 gigs and manage three competitive bands across five grades over 12 months.
The evening concluded with the performance of the 3B World Pipe Champions playing their winning medley in front of the 300+ attendees. The band is looking forward to continuing their success in the upcoming 2024 competition season.

On Friday, 10 November, our Remembrance Day acknowledgement in memory of those who have fought in armed conflicts will be held on North Oval. The community is welcome to join us as we observe a minute’s silence. Students from Prep and Year 8 will then place a cross into the ground for the young Haileyburians who served and lost their lives over 100 years ago.
On Thursday, 9 November we will graduate the Year 8 cohort of 2023. We are proud of the students and their achievements, and we look forward to celebrating the end of their time in Middle School. Justin Main, Head of Senior School (Brighton) will welcome our wonderful students into the area of the School that will be home for their final four years at Haileybury.
After completing Semester 2 exams and our Year 8 students graduating from Middle School, Term 1A begins for Years 7 and 8 students on Monday, 13 November. We wish our Year 8 students every success as they commence their time in Pre-Senior. For our Year 7 students, this is the start of their final year of Middle School as they become the leaders of Castlefield. The leadership process is under way, and we look forward to announcing our 2024 captains in coming weeks.
Please note that the 2023 Orientation Day (Up Day) is scheduled for Tuesday, 21 November for our current Prep to Year 6 students. Students may wear casual sports clothes with runners. Students spend the day in their 2024 year level meeting teachers, visiting homerooms and being introduced to their new classmates in preparation for next year. It is a day of excitement and nerves, but always fun!
Just a reminder for families that South Road is the preferred pick-up and drop-off location for students in Junior and Middle Schools and the roundabout is an efficient way to collect your child.
Staff are on duty before and after school to help children remain safe within our grounds.
For Senior School students, South Road is the only drop-off and pick-up area for parents who drive their child to school. We encourage older students to walk, ride or take public transport rather than being driven to school.
We are committed to keeping our students and community members safe in and around our School and thank our families for their support. Bayside Council have also provided the attached document to help raise awareness of safety around our Schools.
The ELC welcomed Steve Parker, a Boonwurrung artist, who worked with all the children to create a collaborative art piece that includes Bundjil and Gawarn (echidna), Gurborra (koala), Walert (possum), and Wareeny (wombat).
Each child contributed to the beautiful work with their handprints. The artwork tells the story of the land we live, learn and play on — Boonwurrung Country. The completed art has been displayed in the Pre-Prep playground and we encourage you to look when you are next in the ELC.
Pre-Preps recently took part in an incursion with Take 3 for the Sea, whose mission is to inspire people to take simple steps to reduce the impacts of plastic pollution and waste in the ocean. The visit reinforced prior learning about showing care and respect for the ocean and its inhabitants by reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in drains and rivers through littering.
Take 3 for the Sea encourages everyone to pick up three pieces of rubbish whenever they visit the beach. Our upcoming excursion to Ricketts Point in a few weeks will be a perfect opportunity to revisit these ideas. Next time you are at the beach please Take 3 for the Sea!
Our Year 12 graduating class were Preps in 2011 and their Prep teachers are still teaching with us! Luci Hill, Tracey Jacob, Jo Silverman and Jodie McInnes were particularly excited to see the little ones they once taught return to Brighton as young adults. As part of this tradition, Junior School students make ties for the Year 12 students and present them in East Quad. A very special moment was captured between sisters, Stephanie and Alessia, as this memento was handed over this year.
We had a gorgeous morning in the Junior School with our visiting grandparents and special friends. There was bookmark making in the library, portrait drawing, games to play and much more. Families wandered in the sunshine enjoying morning tea and time together. Family connections are so important and the gleam in the eye of the children and their visitors was something special.
On Friday, 13 October Castlefield saw its past students — the current Year 12s — come back to Brighton one last time for a final assembly at their home campus. As the Year 12s stepped back through the gates, the memories of ELC, Junior and Middle Years flooded back. They reminisced about camps, musicals, favourite teachers, funny memories and the campus in which they did so much ‘growing up’.
The students donned ties handmade by Junior school students, opened time capsules and listened to their peers and past teachers at a very special assembly. It was a chance for our Middle School students to glimpse their future.
We wish our Years 7 and 8 students all the best as they complete their exams in the coming weeks. Preparation is key and students can attend Help Desk sessions to seek feedback and clarification on what they have been learning. Exams are part of our Teaching and Learning programs and ensure students are familiar with sitting exams under test conditions. They can also assess themselves on their understanding and complete the learning cycle with feedback for improvement.
As a SunSmart school, all students are required to wear a hat during recess, lunchtimes, sport training and PE. Please ensure your child’s hat is labelled with their name and that they have this at school every day. Mobile phones, if brought to school, must be secured in their locker for the day. If you need to get a message to your child, please go through Reception or the Homeroom Teacher.

A heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful individuals who dedicated their time and effort to ensure the Junior School Disco was a resounding success. Your hard work in assisting with decorating, packing up and supervision truly made a difference and made a memorable event for our students.
As we enter the warmer months, remember to stop by the Second-hand Uniform Shop for all your uniform requirements. The opening hours are:
Wednesdays: 8.15 am – 10 .15 am
Thursdays: 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm.

Recently, we held the annual House Choral competition and students and staff dressed in house-coloured shirts when competing in the theatre. First to the stage was Green House with the song We Are the Champions, followed by Purple House with Wake. Blue House performed Youth while Gold House chose Dream it Possible.
To round off the event, Blue House ended the competition with the song, Unstoppable. Congratulations to Blue House for their outstanding performance and being judged the winners.
The BPIAL Alliance Cup Basketball Competition for Junior and Secondary schools was held recently and Haileybury had several teams in the boys’ and girls’ competitions. The competition was held at Beijing Private Huijia School with 26 teams from 12 schools, including eight girls’ teams.
The two days of competition saw Haileybury’s talented athletes dominate the court. The girls’ team, displayed unwavering determination and formidable skills, earning them a spot in the high school girls’ Group Finals. On the boys’ side, the Haileybury team showcased exceptional prowess, advancing to the high school boys’ Group Finals with hopes of securing the championship. These outcomes are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students and we wish them luck over the next few months.
In the spirit of giving back to the community, Purple and Green House were involved in semester charity events. Green House is focusing on eco-conscious values and eight students and three staff visited an environmental protection facility in Tianjin where they took part in waste classification, research and collection. Through this project, they will actively participate in real-world waste sorting in their community, ultimately creating a sustainable and environmentally conscious generation.
The focus of Purple House was on protecting the marine environment and 13 students and two staff visited the local Dongjiang Port Qianhai Park bay area in Tianjin. They cleaned landmarks and signage and then collected and disposed of debris along the shoreline, contributing to the preservation of marine life and the health of the coastal ecosystem.

It has been a delight to see our current Year 12 students cross the stage and become Old Haileyburians at our Graduations. Seeing so many happy City students looking forward to their VCE exams and life beyond, filled with hope and optimism, has been a joy. We are so proud of this group, who started in Years 6 or 7, and have flourished at City campus. They particularly loved their ‘Back To’ Day, when Preps presented them with a special book and recited a story dedicated to them.
It was also wonderful to hear from Year 12 parents and guardians about how proud they are of the young people they have raised. They were also profoundly grateful to the School for the opportunities and the wonderful teaching and learning their children have received at City campus. The dancing was the highlight for the students and parents who all enjoyed the great music from the Staff Band.
I also attended Haileybury Pangea’s Graduation, where three former City students graduated with their proud City parents and siblings in attendance. Haileybury Pangea offers an alternative pathway and with one of the graduates currently living in Japan and working as an international model, it is a reminder that there are many pathways to the VCE. What is common across our campuses is the fact that Haileybury students are committed, teachers are brilliant, and parents are engaged. Best wishes to all our Year 12 students as they prepare for their upcoming exams.
As we near the end of the year, Middle School students will have another round of examinations. I have been pleased to see the effort made by our Years 7 and 8 students with their quote sheets, study notes and preparation. They have learnt how to learn, and knowing this at such a young age is so important as they head into their Senior years. Examinations help our students refine their strategies, techniques, skills and concentration. We wish them all every success.
Haileybury Heads of Early Learning recently took part in the Old Ways, New Wisdom conference, where keynote speakers from Canada, the UK and Australia presented the latest research and evidence on the benefits of play to enhance teaching and learning.
The Early Childhood Australia Conference released the Statement on Play, articulating and advocating for children’s right to play and the value of play-based approaches. Play-based learning approaches inform our practice in the ELC and we embed play-based philosophies, intentional teaching strategies and reflective planning throughout our high-quality learning environments.
The Statement on Play affirms the effectiveness of Haileybury’s Early Learning Centre in promoting positive outcomes for children’s learning and development. A copy is available to families in our Family Resource Centre in the foyer.
As the weather is warming up and the sun is shining, it is important to protect our children’s skin. Throughout the day, educators will support your child to reapply sunscreen, but children should have sunscreen applied before they arrive at the ELC. A daily UV rating, as stated by the SunSmart app, is displayed in the ELC foyer to ensure sun safety is part of our daily routine.
Recently, City’s Prep and Year 1 students took an educational excursion to Collingwood Children’s Farm in Abbotsford. During their visit, students deepened their appreciation for the natural world and all its inhabitants — including poultry, guinea pigs, sheep and goats! Through hands-on experiences, they used their senses and connected with the farm’s animals. This fostered an understanding that all living creatures look different to each other and live in diverse environments where they find food, water and protection, and this links to their Term 4 Inquiry topics.
In Years 3 and 4, students can join the renowned Scrolls program which offers instruction in string instruments like the violin, viola, cello and double bass. Recently, Junior School students from all four of Haileybury’s Melbourne campuses came together to participate in the annual Scrolls Workshop, which was hosted at City. This event led to a highly collaborative orchestra performance that showcased the musical talents of all students who attended.
We wish our Years 7 and 8 students the very best as they begin their exams on Thursday, 2 November. Students have been preparing for their examinations by revising at school and home and by attending Exam Help Desk sessions which are offered by teachers before school and at lunchtime for independent study and to ask questions. Middle School exams are a wonderful chance for students to develop and consolidate knowledge. This upcoming period also exposes our students to the examination process and builds their study skills. Final exams are held on Wednesday, 8 November.
The recent Haileybury Hive bee excursion transported Year 5 and three Pangea students to Haileybury Berwick where they donned beekeeper suits and witnessed our beehives in action. From the fascinating hierarchy within a hive that includes the queen, drone bees and worker bees, to observing the complete life cycle of these remarkable insects, the students’ day was an educational adventure.
Their journey also underscored the vital role of bees in pollinating plants that produce the food we eat, including coffee, chocolate and most fruits and vegetables. As they took a closer look at bees through microscopes and savoured some sweet rewards by tasting honey from across Australia, including honeycomb from the Haileybury Hive, it became clear that these tiny creatures play an indispensable part in our ecosystem and daily lives. This experience left the students with a deeper appreciation for bees and a commitment to their preservation.
In Thrive, our Year 6 students have been creating arcade games as a part of their Vocational Capabilities Unit. Some of the innovative designs included basketball challenges, ‘breath’ powered pinball and even a homemade retractable claw game! The boys and girls then showcased the activities for our Year 5 students to play and attempt to win prizes. As part of this unit, our Year 6 cohort learnt how social enterprises have a positive impact on people and places, and how creativity and entrepreneurial skills can be used to bring social change.

Term 4 is shaping up to be a very busy term with many events — from dance galas to Speech Night and ending with Christmas Carols. The students are busily getting back into the swing of Haileybury life, and it is lovely to see them enthusiastically involved in many activities at our lovely campus.
The HPF City Annual General Meeting is being held on Thursday, 2 November at 7.30 pm, via Zoom. The myHaileybury app has all the details, including the nomination forms so that you can be involved. Being a part of fundraising and community life at Haileybury is a rewarding experience. If you would like to discuss a particular role with me, please feel free to email.
The new Second-hand Uniform Shop opening hours have been very successful and we hope we are making the shop more accessible to parents and students. The new POS system is also fully implemented and is working well.
Just a reminder that our final second-hand uniform pop-up shop day this year will be on Up Day, on Tuesday, 21 November. We will be open from 8.00 am – 9.00 am and 3.00 pm – 4.00 pm. The collection bins will be displayed from Wednesday, 1 November at King Street and in the basement. You can also drop off your items whilst the shop is open. All information can be found on the myHaileybury app.
If you would like to volunteer your time to assist with the Second-hand Uniform Shop, please drop us an email and join in the fun.
Have a fabulous Melbourne Cup long weekend.

Friday, 20 October was a wonderful moment in the history of HRS as our sixth group of Year 12s graduated from our School. This year is special because many students who joined us in Year 7 in 2018 when we opened, completed Year 12 after six years wearing the magenta.
We enjoyed the traditional final Year 12 breakfast with staff and students and then moved to Dumabudla to hold the official Haileybury Rendall School Graduation Assembly for the Class of 2023.
I feel a close affinity with this group of Year 12s. Most of us have worked and learned together for the past three years and I have also been lucky enough to teach Maths to many of the cohort. They have been a united cohort and have embraced the HRS culture and spirit. They have led the rest of the students by their example and their involvement and love of HRS.
Friday was a day to laugh and cry — a day to reflect with fondness and a day to look forward with excitement. Students, staff and parents did equal measures of both.
Who is the class of 2023? Here are some interesting statistics on the 42 students who graduated Year 12 today.
For those chasing ATARs, the VCE exams have commenced and all your teachers wish you well over the next four weeks or so. If you feel nervous, the best thing to do is another practice exam! Keep active and healthy and the time will pass quickly. Follow your teacher’s advice and seek help from them in your final preparation.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the unsung heroes of this occasion — the parents and guardians of our Year 12s. Without your love, guidance, patience, care, cooking and taxi-driving skills, these young people would not have achieved all that they have. Thank you to all our families and communities for your support and thanks for choosing HRS — it has been a privilege to work with your children.
I look forward to our final official event at the Valedictory Dinner on Friday, 17 November.
We are so proud of the entire Class of 2023. Go forward, don’t forget your connection to HRS, and be awesome.

Principal, Haileybury Rendall School
Every year, Edrington is known for its success in the Science Talent Search competition and 2023 is no exception. We had 18 teams enter this year’s competition and each of them achieved an award. Congratulations to Armaan (Year 6), Theekshitha (Year 8) and Diyenka (Year 8) who all received major bursaries.
Ghosts, goblins and witches! Oh my! Our Middle School Halloween Disco was an absolute hit! The John Twist Hall was transformed into a spooky wonderland and students wowed everyone with their creative costumes. There were some fantastic moves on the dance floor and the slushy and fairy floss machines served up some deliciously eerie treats. Thanks to our dedicated staff and the incredible energy of our students. It was a night to remember!
Teaching children to care for their country instills a sense of patriotism and promotes their cognitive, social, emotional and ethical development. It equips them with valuable skills and attitudes that help them grow to become responsible and compassionate people.
Our ELC Educators encourage children to develop an appreciation of the natural world and to understand our impact on it, along with the inter-dependence between people, animals, plants, land and water. Children are supported to take an active role in caring for the environment and to think about how they can contribute to a sustainable future.
This fosters a sense of responsibility towards their country and helps children understand the importance of active citizenship. When children understand the impact of their actions on the environment, they are more likely to grow into environmentally conscious adults who make sustainable choices.
Children learn teamwork, cooperation and communication and learn to work with others, to share ideas, respect diverse perspectives and enhance their social skills and empathy. They learn to take responsibility and make decisions, and this promotes learning from each other.
The children have enjoyed using natural resources during their everyday play. They are watering the veggie patches, harvesting the herbs and vegetables as they grow, cleaning up their play spaces, recycling every day, using natural light within their classroom and recycling food waste to support our worm farms and compost bins.
Our Junior School students started their compulsory swimming program today in our Edrington pool. This is an important part of our Physical Education program, and all students are expected to participate. Parents are welcome to watch their children swim, but only those with the Working with Children Check can enter the change rooms to help children after their lesson.
Students should bring their swimming cap, goggles, black speedo style bathers, towel and sandals on their scheduled session dates. During the final week, the students’ last session will focus on water safety and students must bring a pair of shorts and a t-shirt that they can wear over the top of their bathers. Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform on scheduled swimming days.
Please clearly name all items that your child brings to school and check the Swimming Program timetable for days and times. Parents, please remember that students who have a swimming lesson during period 8 will finish that lesson at 3.30 pm. Students can be picked up from the classroom or at the pick-up zone after 3.45 pm.
The Middle School is very busy and focused at this time of year. All students in Years 7 and 8 have started the exam process and will complete their final exams on Wednesday, 8 November.
Year 8 Drama students presented their final assessment pieces to the Middle School on Friday, 27 October. Boys and girls are to be congratulated for their gripping performances.
Year 8 students will be farewelled from Middle School at their Graduation Assembly on Friday, 10 November. This is always a wonderful time to celebrate and recognise the contribution, achievement and growth of our Year 8 cohort during their time in the Middle School.
We look forward to farewelling our students at our annual MS Colour Run. All Middle School students will join together for a picnic on River Flat Oval and then lace up their runners to participate in the energetic and much-anticipated Colour Run.

Haileybury is distinguished by the high quality of its teachers and their exceptional pastoral care. Haileybury staff go beyond traditional teaching methods, leveraging the latest educational technologies and approaches to meet diverse learning styles and needs. Their dedication to each student’s success and to them reaching their full potential is evident through regular feedback and support.
Additionally, Haileybury places a strong focus on pastoral care and fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment. Teachers play a crucial role in students’ personal and emotional development, offering guidance and support to help them navigate adolescence. The belonging and bonds formed between teachers, students and peers contribute significantly to the wellbeing and growth of our students.
Additionally, Haileybury staff are key in the success of Haileybury Foundation. Through Haileybury’s Workplace Giving program, staff donate a percentage of their monthly salary to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund. So far, over 100 staff have participated in this program with remarkable results. Two scholarships have been created thanks to the generosity of our staff.
Haileybury Foundation regularly provides donors with updates on student progress, and we were delighted to send videos of these two scholarship students to staff at a recent Workplace Giving event.
Donations to Haileybury Foundation continue to stream in. Our students are incredibly fortunate to be in receipt of such a high-quality education that would otherwise be out of their reach.
All gifts to Haileybury Foundation are tax deductible. Our donors are having enormous impact and we have been delighted with the involvement of our community — from past parents, alumni and staff to current parents and staff.
Donations can be made here.
Thank you.

Please join us at the Gadsden Pavilion on Wednesday, 8 November from 4.00 pm – 5.30 pm to view the artwork that students have created during the year. This will be a great time to celebrate all things creative!
Term 4 has been a busy time in the Newlands apiary. We have hosted incursions for the Middle School students from Newlands and Castlefield and welcomed a new group of students to our Newlands Hive program.
Students wore a bee suit, and we opened the hive, closely observed the frames and felt how heavy they were when they held a lot of honey. We also discussed how we can easily support bees by growing bee friendly plants such as lavender and rosemary.
The students enjoyed the incursions very much.
Two of our amazing Newlands students attended the National Final of the Future Problem Solving Program Australia at Brisbane Grammar School. Elsha (Year 8) and Anay (Year 8) were supported by their dedicated coach, Kirsten Owens, and the invitation to the National Final is a testament to the students’ dedication, creativity and exceptional problem-solving skills.
The topic for this year’s final was Throwaway Society and students prepared by reading and participating in thought-provoking discussions. Anay and Elsha have shown a remarkable ability to tackle real-world challenges and to envision innovative solutions for a better future. The finals gave them an opportunity to showcase their problem-solving abilities on a national stage.
We are very proud that Anay placed first in Global Issues Problem Solving Middle Division – Individual and was also Scenario Writing Champion Middle Division.
Our environment continues to play an important role in the children’s learning, with spring providing rich opportunities for all our ELC classes.
Within Reception, changes to the outdoor environment have been met with curiosity as elements of nature make their way inside. The Boobook Owls have enjoyed fine-tuning their observational drawing and fine motor skills as they created flowers for their shared art project. The children are very excited to share their canvas with all our families during the silent Art Auction.
In Little Corellas, indigenous plants have been added to the new garden beds with children learning how to care for these new additions. Harvesting has already begun for the Rainbow Lorikeets who are enjoying the fruits of their labor. They have been gathering beans to send home for families to cook.
Meanwhile, in Pre-Prep, it has been wonderful to see the care and dedication children have shown to their environment and this has created some bountiful spring harvests.
Children in White Ibis have used broccoli from their garden beds to make cheesy broccoli bites in the kitchen. Much to the delight of the Black Swan group, a caterpillar has emerged from its chrysalis in the most beautiful display of the life cycle. In addition to this, broad beans have been harvested and children have made a delicious broad bean dip to enjoy with rice crackers.
The Fairy Wrens have been flitting around the school during a recent nature walk and returned to the classroom to plant seeds and create their own blossom trees from sticks and other interesting things they gathered.
We are looking forward to all the new and exciting learning opportunities that the warmer weather will bring.
We are excited to announce the dates of our Junior School Prep transition sessions, designed to prepare children entering Prep in 2024. These sessions will begin in November and provide your child with a smooth introduction to the school routine. We can’t wait to get to know your child better during this process!
For those children currently attending the Early Learning Centre at Newlands, the transition program will seamlessly integrate into their regular day. However, students who are not currently enrolled in the Early Learning Centre, will be invited separately to these sessions.
The Newlands Junior School Transition Program sessions will take place in the three Prep classrooms. Below are the dates and times:
Thursday, 9 November – 9.00 am to 10.15 am
Thursday, 16 November – 9.00 am to 10.15 am
Tuesday, 21 November – 9.00 am to 1.00 pm
We look forward to a successful, enjoyable transition period as your child takes their first steps into the world of our Junior School.
On Wednesday, 15 November, our Year 2 students will have a fantastic opportunity to take part in a Science Discovery Dome Incursion.
During this captivating 60-minute session, they will delve deeper into their understanding of different scientific concepts. They will learn about the factors responsible for night and day, the changing of seasons, the Earth’s orbit around the sun, the moon’s orbit around the Earth, and the intriguing phenomenon of casting shadows.
A highlight of this experience will be the projection of stunning images of the solar system onto the dome’s roof, creating a memorable visual spectacle for all.
This session will generate numerous thought-provoking questions from our students, setting the stage for further exploration of exciting scientific topics throughout the remainder of the Year 2 Science Unit.
The 2023 Haileybury Hailstorm Newlands Human Powered Vehicle team has started their preparations for the 30th edition of the Energy Breakthrough Competition. This will be held in Maryborough from Wednesday, 22 to Friday, 24 November.
Offered as part of Haileybury’s Curious Minds STEM programs, ten Year 6 students have been selected to study and refine a three-wheeled human powered vehicle. Awaiting the team is the impressive challenge of riding their human powered vehicle for 14 hours in an endurance trial and presenting to multiple judging panels.
Over 90 schools from across Victoria participate in the Energy Breakthrough Competition and this year marks Haileybury Newlands 16th year of involvement. The students challenging themselves physical and academically this year are: Soumil, Elanie, Daniel, Taniel, William, Millie, Tammy, Lucas, Zara and Ann. We wish them luck!
Beginning in Week 4, students can receive extra support from staff as they prepare for their upcoming examinations.
The Years 7 and 8 Help Desk will be available from Monday, 23 October to Wednesday, 1 November in the Newlands Library. Times are available before school, during lunchtime and after school. This timetable has been published via the Canvas Heads of School page, providing students with the chance to ask any subject-related questions within core subjects such as English, Science, Mathematics, Humanities and Languages, as well as their semester-based electives and languages.
Good luck to our Middle School students as they prepare for their Semester 2 examinations!
On Thursday, 9 November, Newlands Middle School will host a Colour Run to raise funds for the Nepal Nagajun School. This event is for students in Years 5–8 and will take place during Period 5 from 12.25 pm – 1.15 pm.
The Colour Run has become an annual part of the Social Justice Program at Newlands. The students will have fun and will certainly get very colourful while supporting a community in need.
If your child would like to participate, please contact the Newlands campus.

The journey of self-discovery and academic growth is often shaped by the experiences we have during our school years. Jack Haritos reflects fondly on his time at Haileybury Rendall School where he embraced every opportunity that came his way.
Jack served as a Social Justice Prefect — a role he cherished deeply. Organising charity events and delivering speeches at assemblies allowed him to develop valuable life skills, such as leadership, communication and a passion for making a positive impact on society. These experiences are laying the foundation for Jack’s future endeavours.
After graduating in 2019, he embarked on an exciting academic journey at the University of Sydney. He pursued a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with a major in Spanish and Latin American Studies. In 2022, he successfully completed this degree, equipped with a global perspective and a thirst for knowledge.
Driven by his aspiration to become a barrister, Jack has embarked on a new chapter in his life, and he started a law degree at the end of last year. Jack’s dedication to his chosen field is evident in his current role as a Court Officer, where he gains firsthand experience observing barristers at the Sydney Bar. Immersed in the intricacies of court procedure and the administration of justice, Jack is building the foundation for his future career.
Living in Sydney has brought Jack numerous personal and professional benefits. This vibrant city provides opportunities to network with people from diverse backgrounds, encouraging a deeper understanding of the world and its people. Jack values the connections he has made, recognising that they enrich his journey and open doors to new possibilities.
While the colder climate of Sydney has been a stark contrast to the dry season in Darwin, Jack is adaptable and resilient. With his family still residing in Darwin, he contemplates the possibility of returning home after completing his law degree. However, he remains open to unforeseen pathways that life may present him and eagerly embraces the unknown.
Thanks for staying connected, Jack, and we hope you enjoyed our Sydney Chapter event!

We were thrilled to celebrate our first graduating cohort of Year 12 students in recent weeks — a milestone for Haileybury and, of course, for our Year 12s and their families. At their final Assembly, we heard a beautiful tribute from Head of House, Natasha Eshuis, while our younger students received some words of advice from the Year 12s themselves.
On Friday 20 October, our Year 12 students, families and staff gathered at Haileybury’s Keysborough campus, in the beautiful Bradshaw Chapel, for the Year 12 Graduation ceremony and Valedictory dinner. The students’ achievements were recognised by Deputy Chair of Council, Deborah Corrigan, and they were welcomed to the Old Haileyburian’s Association by Russell Davidson.
Speeches from Year 12 graduates Anthony, Georgia, Madeline and Kyan paid tribute to the School, staff, families and their fellow students, while CEO | Principal, Derek Scott, celebrated the bold and enterprising spirit that is the mark of Haileybury students and staff.
We thank the many staff and students who contributed to this wonderful event, including our event co-ordinator, Paris Paris, Director of Performing Arts, Rodney Marshall, and Year 10 Pangea student Abby who delivered a stunning violin performance as part of the ceremony.
Term 4 saw the official launch of Haileybury Pangea’s student-led Digital Tech Team. This is a group of students who have volunteered their time to lead and support students in developing their tech skills, and to make the most of the many digital tools on offer through Haileybury Pangea’s platforms. Students in the team share their tips through assembly presentations, as well as helpful video tutorials and Teams posts.
We thank Haileybury Pangea’s Digital Learning Leader, Geoff Orton, for coordinating this fantastic initiative!

The Haileybury College class of 2023 has officially graduated.
It is always an exciting and very emotional time of the year for our Year 12s as they gather for a series of formal and informal events to celebrate the culmination of their schooling. Friday was the last time the entire cohort were together as they attended their final Senior School Assembly.
Afterwards, they enjoyed food trucks provided by the Old Haileyburians Association and then returned to Aikman Hall to present their own Year 12 Review — a wonderful combination of onstage performances and amusing video anecdotes and farewells.
On Monday (Haileybury College) and Tuesday (Haileybury Girls College) were fondly farewelled by their Houses, led by their Heads of House, in gatherings that are always very moving.
The Haileybury College assembly, after the awarding of the House shields, was an opportunity for their outstanding school captain, Sam, to deliver his final speech to Years 10–12, with the Haileybury Girls College school captain, Neeraja, reducing her peers to tears in her emotional speech to the Senior School.
The event ended with the ceremonial laying of the flag, a symbol of the end of the Year 12 cohort’s time at the School. It is ready to be unfurled by the incoming 2024 student leaders.
Students then enjoyed lunch before hearing from the peers and staff they had nominated. This concluded the more informal part of the day.
The evening saw the students officially graduate, proudly walking across the stage to the applause of their teachers and loved ones who have been such a pivotal part of their academic journey. The Valedictory Dinner held at Crown Palladium was a fitting farewell to this outstanding group.
For the next few weeks, the students will be undertaking their final exams. We wish them all the best and thank the class of 2023 for their service to the School.
All students in Senior School have had examinations and our Units 3 and 4 students will continue to sit exams in the coming weeks. I encourage all families to do everything they can to support their children during this time.
While examinations will be a normal part of our students’ lives for the foreseeable future, VCE examinations can become all-consuming for the young people in our care. A degree of encouragement from parents is always useful in helping students prepare for examinations; however, it is also important to balance this with the message that families will support them if things do not go as planned.
If you have any concerns about your child during or post the examination period, please contact their relevant Head of Pre-Senior or Head of House to discuss the supports that Haileybury can offer.
The Year 12 leaders for the 2024 school year were announced last Friday. The process used to elect our school leaders is a democratic one with students and staff voting for those students they believe to be worthiest to lead Haileybury. I am constantly amazed at just how seriously our students take this power to vote and I am equally impressed that they make such good choices — year in and year out.
I know that Anna Wassell (Acting Head of Senior Girls) and Graham Leys (Head of Senior Boys) are very pleased with the group of School Captains, Senior Prefects, House Captains, Prefects and House Vice Captains elected to these positions for 2024. We cannot wait to begin working with this team of student leaders to make next year as good as 2023.

Earlier this term, a squad of 95 students from Prep to Year 12 represented Haileybury at the Victorian Interschools Snowsport Championships at Mt Buller. The team’s effort was significant, and our students performed exceptionally well in a very challenging competition.
There were several outstanding individual and team performances including:
Unfortunately, the Australian Interschools Snowsport Championships was cancelled due to insufficient snow coverage. Despite this, we wish to congratulate the 46 students who successfully qualified for the National event! This is an incredible achievement, and we are very proud.
Congratulations to all students on their outstanding performances.
Michael (Year 10) has been selected to represent the U/16 Victorian Soccer squad at the National Championships in Sydney early next month. The trial process has been run over the past 12 weeks in parallel with Michael’s academy training at Western United. Michael has had to juggle school sport and study commitments to earn selection into the squad. We wish him all the very best.
Isabelle (Year 9) was excited to represent Victoria at the 15&U Water Polo Female National State Championships in Canberra. Isabelle has worked tirelessly to develop her game and put in a strong performance in the country’s capital.

Online news from Haileybury

Head of Castlefield (Brighton)
