Haileybury’s Senior Executive team expands to welcome Dr Nicholas Grigsby – our new Deputy Principal Head of Senior Schools.
Haileybury is very pleased to welcome Dr Nicholas Grigsby as the Deputy Principal Head of Senior Schools from the start of Term 2. Dr Grigsby becomes a key member of the Haileybury Senior Executive team who collectively oversee the education delivery and operations across all campuses.
Haileybury’s vision is ‘to be recognised as a great world school’ and our mission is ‘to develop high achieving students who are connected globally, to each other and to the communities in which they live and which they will serve.’
Dr Grigsby’s extensive and varied career well supports Haileybury’s vision and mission. Dr Grigsby’s most recent role was as Senior Deputy Head of Stonyhurst College in Lancashire in the UK. Stonyhurst is a 430-year-old co-educational secondary boarding school of 800 students.
During his five years there he managed the complex academic and pastoral care needs of the students and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has previously worked at schools in New Zealand, China and Poland. Haileybury greatly values the breadth of his international experience which will add further depth to our strategic planning.
In a future in which involvement in performing and creative arts will help students develop the broad range of skills needed for post-school life, Dr Grigsby’s music teaching and performance background (he is an accomplished organist) will also be of great value. He has a bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate from the University of Leeds, an MA (Honours) from the University of Waikato in New Zealand and a PhD from the University of Waikato.
Haileybury’s Senior Executive team is:

CEO | Principal
Thank you to the 800 students, staff and parents who provided feedback to Haileybury’s Uniform and Image Committee late last year.
Informed by student voice and future focused, we have implemented the summer short option for our girls and reviewed the School Uniform Policy.
At this time, no other changes have been made to Haileybury’s School Uniform.
We encourage all students to continue wearing their uniform with pride.
We look forward to welcoming students back to Term 2 on Wednesday, 26 April. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter break and the chance to relax and enjoy time with family and friends.
A reminder that students may wear either summer or full school uniform (winter) for the first two weeks of term. From Monday, 9 May, all students are required to wear their winter uniform, including a blazer.
Communication between home and school is important and working as a team to support students as they move through their educational journey is powerful. Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held during the third week of Term 2. These will be held via Zoom.
Keep an eye on myHaileybury for further details.
We have an upcoming parent webinar for Years 7 and 8 on Wednesday, 26 April at 7.00 pm, presented by Elephant Ed.
Understanding Consent will provide parents with the latest legalities surrounding consent and how they can support their children with strategies and start open conversations at home.
It will also provide parents with information about the program being delivered to students in Term 2.
We look forward to seeing you on the night.
The roundabout system within our gates is an efficient way to bring and collect your children from school. South Road is the preferred drop off and pick up for all students. A reminder that Year 10 – 12 students are not to enter/exit the school via Villeroy Street.
Question: What shall we do with all the lettuce from the vegetable garden?
Answer: Create a lettuce stall of course!
After planting and tending to the lettuce in our veggie garden, there was great interest in picking the lettuce before the holidays. We decided to create a stall to sell our organic lettuce and raise some money for the Royal Children’s Hospital. It was wonderful to see the children manage and run the lettuce stall independently with such passion and capability.
Our stall was a huge success, and our Haileybury community was incredible in supporting this incentive.
Our Boonwurrung friend, Jaedan Williams, shared the creation story with our children. He told the story of Bundjil the eagle and his friend, Waa the crow. The children danced around and moved like kangaroos, emus and birds. Many Boonwurrung words were shared, and the children were encouraged to love themselves, one another, and Mother Earth.
What a magical morning! The children proudly set off to hunt for the pieces of the Easter Bilby puzzle. Our clues sent everybody to the School flags, the fountain, the library and to Clark Oval. Once all the Bilby pieces were found the children excitedly assembled the Easter Bilby together.
The highlight was joining together with family to connect, dance, catch bubbles and enjoy morning tea.
To the children’s delight, Bilby surprised us all by leaving eggs in the classroom while we were out and about.
Portsea was as pretty as a picture while students frolicked in the water and dug competition winning-sized holes in the sand. Through a series of ‘challenge by choice’ activities, students pushed their personal boundaries and stepped outside their comfort zones. Working as a team to haul their mates to the top of the Giant Swing is always a crowd favourite.
A wonderful team of staff and students shared a fabulous few days with memories created and many laughs along the way. Stefan even got to celebrate his birthday with ice-cream cake for breakfast!
It was the battle of the pool as Years 3 and 4 students competed at the House Swimming Carnival. After completing a successful swim program during the term, students showed off their new-found skills with a little healthy competition. House chants and cheering could be heard across the Junior School and a great time was had by all. Special thanks to our PE staff for organising this event.

Term 1 for the Middle School at Castlefield has something for everyone. From camps and House events such as the annual Coin Trail, to ensembles, musical rehearsals, competitive sport, STEM and LEAP, Term 1 has had it all.
To all our Middle School students, we congratulate you and thank you for your efforts, dedication and focus during Term 1. For many of our students, it was their first 10 weeks being a member of the Castlefield community. For many more, it is a home away from home. No matter the year level, we look forward to Term 2 building on the strong foundations established in Term 1.
Haileybury is a busy and exciting learning community and every day our students are achieving excellence in learning the skills that will help them succeed in the world. We look forward to new and exciting experiences for all our students, however, embracing the now and committing to every lesson, every day is a consistent goal for our students.
Our culture of learning and connectedness creates a place for all students to safely and successfully do this. Above all, it is a place where students belong.
A reminder that winter uniform is to be worn in Terms 2 and 3. There is a two-week grace period at the beginning of Term 2 where students can still wear the summer uniform. Starting in Week 3 of Term 2, all students must be in full winter uniform.
Katrina Manson
Head of Castlefield (Brighton)
It was great to see so many families at Luna Park last week. We raised a good amount of money for Snow Sports and the event was so successful that it might become a regular feature.
Just a reminder that the Junior School Movie night is on Friday, 28 April. The movie will be Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Tickets are $10 and snacks can be purchased.
The Castlefield Mother’s Day lunch at Encore in St Kilda has sold out. It should be a great afternoon.
Remember, the SHUS will be open on the first morning back at school for Term 2 with 20% off everything for two weeks.
We wish you all a great holiday.

For the last hour of the last day of each term, all students from Prep to Year 8 gather together to finish the term. As Head of Campus, I always enjoy these assemblies and I am always so proud of how our young people set the tone and work hard until the end of term. We find a sense of belonging when we reflect upon the great things that we have done to ensure that every student matters every day.
Our Year 4 and Year 8 student leaders spoke about the highlights and acknowledged all that we have achieved as a campus. They also thanked their brilliant teachers and other staff for a fabulous term.
We always enjoy a musical interlude and this time a new jazz combo played with lots of groove. Our Heads of School spoke and inspired our young people to keep striving for excellence in all they do.
Finally, we wished everyone a safe and happy holiday and I extended my best wishes to all our City families for the break.
We were delighted to welcome Rebecca Arceri, Haileybury’s Chief Operating Officer, as our special guest. Rebecca joined the End of Term Assembly and was thrilled to draw the winners of the highly coveted Royal Children’s Hospital chocolate hampers.
As a campus, we raised $1,850 for the RCH. When I asked students to raise their hand if they had a family member who worked at the hospital, quite a number of hands went up. When I asked students to raise their hand if they had been to RCH, the room was full of raised hands. Such is the impact of the wonderful work done by the hospital across Victoria.
We congratulate the following lucky winners, pictured here with Rebecca.
Reception children have been learning how healthy foods support our growing bodies and impact our physical wellbeing. During mealtimes, children have been encouraged to eat their fruit or vegetables first and they are talking and reminding each other about the different types of healthy foods.
We will continue to focus on healthy eating through conversations and intentional teaching to promote a healthy lifestyle for children in Reception and Pre-Prep.
As part of our specialist program, Reception and Pre-Prep children take part in ELC Fit developed by Mark Reed, Chair of Athletics and Head of Girls Athletics at Haileybury.
ELC Fit focuses on children’s gross motor development as they tackle different obstacles as part of a fast-paced obstacle course. This program has also been embedded within our PE program to extend and enhance children’s learning, based upon their interests and capabilities.
Children have loved challenging themselves while developing fundamental movement skills including balancing, jumping and hopping.
Reception and Pre-Prep take part in this program every Tuesday morning for 20 minutes.
During the final week of Term 1, our Year 4 student leaders collaborated with Junior School classroom teachers to create a short Term 1 recap for each year level. They summarised the highlights of each year level cohort and shared them with the School community.
Many key achievements and moments were captured and illustrated how our Prep to Year 4 students are living our Care, Learn, Play philosophy.
So, what were the highlights for each year level?
Prep: For Preps, a highlight of this term was visiting Inside Out and Flagstaff Gardens during recess and lunch. The students enjoyed exploring these beautiful outdoor spaces and running around and playing with their friends.
Year 1: Year 1 students most enjoyed meeting their new teachers, establishing classroom routines, making new friends, and sharing a snapshot of learning at Assembly called ‘Little People, Big Dreams’.
Year 2: Year 2 students reflected on their favourite Term 1 initiative which was sharing written messages of kindness with their classmates and promoting compassion and empathy in the classroom.
Year 3: In Year 3 Physical Education lessons, students mastered the art of playing bench-ball — a fun and active way to improve their coordination and team-building skills.
Year 4: A highlight for Year 4 students was the formal induction of their Semester 1 leaders, and an exciting three-day Portsea Camp experience!
We would like to remind Junior School families that students from Prep to Year 4 are expected to wear their full winter uniform from the start of Term 2. We encourage all students to wear their uniform with pride as it is a mark of the high standards and expectations we uphold as a community.
We were delighted to see so many parents visit the HPF City Second-hand Uniform Pop Up Shop during the second last week of Term 1. This should ensure families are ready for the first day back.
Please note that the winter uniform is to be worn in Terms 2 and 3. The full school uniform policy can be found in the School Info section of myHaileybury.
In the final week of Term 1, the Year 7 boys and girls attended camp with students from Haileybury Edrington. They split their time between Camp Jungai and the Rubicon Valley, sleeping in cabins and tents.
Highlights included canoeing, high ropes, cultural sessions, hiking and bushcraft activities that prepared students for further outdoor experiences in Year 8 and Pre-Senior.
Year 7 Camp allows the boys and girls to disconnect from technology, deepen social connections, build further relationships with staff, challenge themselves and HAVE FUN!
Social Justice is one of the pillars of Haileybury and we encourage students to connect to one another and to their community.
Nate Nesbitt (Year 7) has displayed this quality by raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. Nate’s willingness to part with his luscious locks for the World’s Greatest Shave was driven by his desire to support people he knows who are currently battling cancer.
Nate has raised over $4,600 and we admire his kindness and empathy.
A new initiative in the Boys Middle School this year is the Year 8 student leader Homeroom sessions held each Wednesday morning.
These sessions foster the connection between all Middle School year levels, raise the profile of our leaders and develop their leadership skills, and they are an engaging experience for students.
The leaders have run physical activity, debating, desk top drumming, origami and drama sessions. They will continue to rotate through the Homerooms as the year progresses.

We hope everyone has enjoyed a well-earned break, which also happens to be a great time to check your wardrobe and find something that sparkles or shines for the HPF Cocktail Party on Friday, 26 May.
The balloon pop, silent and live auctions and DJ will guarantee a fun-filled night. Block out the date in your diary and we will see you there from 6.30 pm – 9.30 pm.
The HPF City is seeking donations for the cocktail party, no matter how big or small. These donations enable us to raise the funds that benefit our ELC, Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. Maybe the last few days of the holidays are an opportunity to clean out that gift cupboard? Your donations will be used in silent and live auctions on the night.
Further information is available via the myHaileybury app.
An open invitation is extended to all our parents and carers to join the HPF Community Meeting via Zoom on Monday, 8 May at 7.30 pm. These meetings are an opportunity to contribute to our school community, to get involved in events, and to hear directly from the Head of Campus and Head of Senior School. We would love to see you there.
Please feel free to reach the Committee at hpfcity@haileybury.com.au if you have any questions.

Young people learn effectively in different ways and as a forward-thinking school, we believe it’s important to find new ways to deliver education that meets the needs of every student. We also believe that access to a high-quality education and to brilliant teachers should not be geographically restricted.
With this in mind, Haileybury Rendall School was proud to recently announce that we are seeking approval from the Northern Territory Government to bring Haileybury Pangea to the Top End.
Haileybury Pangea will be the Northern Territory’s first private online school and it means that Haileybury Rendall School now offers students and families day, boarding and online schooling.
Haileybury Pangea is an exciting development and hopes to welcome its first students in 2024. It builds on Haileybury Rendall School’s success over the last five years, as well as Haileybury’s 130 years of tradition, history, experience and entrepreneurship.
Haileybury Pangea launched its first classes in Victoria in January this year, after several years of rigorous research and development, and it has been a resounding success. We expect students and families to experience that same success when Haileybury Pangea launches here.
Importantly, Haileybury Pangea offers parents across the Northern Territory another choice in education. It offers high-achieving, self-motivated students flexibility, while providing an education that meets the very high standards that our school is renowned for.
Haileybury Pangea is significantly different from what we currently offer. As an online school, this means students from Years 5 to 12 (ages 10 to 18) will attend from their individual location. This will support families living in rural and remote parts of the Northern Territory where education options may be extremely limited.
Andrew McGregor
Principal, Haileybury Rendall School
I trust that you have had an enjoyable and relaxing term break and that students are ready for another exciting term ahead. Term 2 classes commence on Wednesday, 26 April.
Winter uniform will be required for Term 2 and students will have a two-week period to transition to this uniform on their return.
This year’s ELC Easter Egg Hunt was very special. Students from Year 12 organised the egg hunt for the ELC children, and we don’t know who was more excited — the older or youngest members of our Edrington community!
Before the hunt, the Senior students drafted a letter to the children from the Easter Bunny letting them know there were going to be Easter eggs dropped in the playground for them to find. The letter also reminded children about being kind to one another and enjoying the holidays with family and friends.
One Senior student dressed in a bunny costume and surprised the children by knocking at their classroom windows.
The Easter Bunny then invited the children to search for eggs, before hopping away. The children were overcome with excitement and enthusiasm as the egg hunt got underway.
We strive to foster connections between schools on our campus and this was a lovely way for the ELC children to build relationships with the Senior students and vice versa. This event is sure to be a cherished memory for many for a long time to come.
Sleep is important for everyone, but consistent sleep is vital for children and adolescents as they experience significant brain development at this age.
Unfortunately, a considerable number of students in primary and secondary schools are not getting enough sleep. This can lead to problems with attention, memory and problem-solving skills. Sleep deprivation can also contribute to emotional and behavioural issues that may affect academic achievement.
Some known problems associated with lack of sleep include:
Making sleep a priority is important for parents who want their children to succeed in school, so putting children to bed at a reasonable hour is extremely important. Experts recommend that school-aged children should be in bed no later than 8.00 pm.
For more information on the benefits of a good night’s sleep visit The Sleep Foundation here.
During Week 9, the Year 8 boys ran a lunchtime of ‘Minute to Win It’ challenges. The aim was to foster connections and create a lively atmosphere in our Boys’ Quad. The challenges offered students a chance to win prizes while having fun.
We hope all parents accessed the online reporting and feedback for their children. The upcoming Parent–Teacher Interviews are an opportune time to meet teachers and discuss the progress of your child.
Interviews are scheduled to take place in Week 2 of Term 2. Bookings can be made via the parent portal on go2. A notification will be posted, and bookings open to parents on Wednesday, 19 April.
Jeanette Rawlings
Head of Edrington (Berwick)
We hope the Easter Bunny was generous to you all. I have justified the abundance of chocolate consumed at our house by telling everyone that chocolate is made from cocoa beans which grows on trees and therefore chocolate is salad!
Di and Kelly are opening the Uniform Shop during the school holidays to cater for winter uniform requirements. The shop will be open on Wednesday, 19 April from 10.00 am – 12.00 noon.
They will continue to open in Term 2 on Wednesdays from 8.15 am to 10.45 am. The Uniform Shop is always looking for an extra hand, so if you have an hour to spare on a Wednesday and can give Di and Kelly a hand, please contact them at shus-berwick@haileybury.com.au.
We have been busy getting the Mother’s Day stall organised, ready for your cherubs to spoil all the mums, grandmas, nannas and carers.
We’ve also ordered 2,000 sausages in bread, ready to cook up for the students when Edrington hosts the rest of the Haileybury campuses for the cross-country gala event. If you are available to help with the upcoming sausage sizzle or Mother’s Day stall, please click here.
See you all soon!

A big thank you to the HPFK for all their wonderful hard work in organising the annual Good Friday Appeal Easter Raffle. This year our Newlands community raised a much needed $2,654 for this great cause. This is such a tremendous effort for all involved and we should be very proud.
Our final Assembly was the perfect opportunity to present these amazing baskets and there were plenty of smiles on the faces of those students lucky enough to win. We also farewelled Leanne Sullivan after 18 years of exceptional service to the School.
Congratulations to the 2023 Easter Raffle Hamper Winners!

Our Gadsden Pavilion is almost completed and will be fully operational by the middle of May. This state-of-the-art facility will provide our students and staff with classrooms, office spaces, training areas, a kitchen, storage facilities and multiple changerooms.
On the second level, a wide balcony overlooks the playing fields, and the three upstairs classrooms can open into one room, providing an exceptional multi-purpose space that will be ideal for Haileybury events.
With the construction zones being removed, ample parking places will again be available at the rear of the Fisher Oval. We thank families for their patience during the building project and we now encourage parents to park at the rear of the Fisher Oval during pick up and drop off times.
We also remind parents not to park near crossings for safety reasons.
Mobile Muster keeps recyclable, reusable and repairable electronics out of landfill.
There will be a collection box at Newlands Resource Centre where you can donate old mobile phones, chargers and modems.
For every item you donate, your name will go into a raffle to win one of several prizes. Please also ask family and friends if they have any mobiles or other electronics that they no longer need and recycle them, rather than throwing them away.
*Please ensure you remove all personal information from your device prior to donation.
As we now move into autumn and winter months, students are expected to wear the full winter uniform. All students are to wear blazers to and from school. Please note, the Uniform Shop has a range of winter garments. We ask families to purchase these items rather than students wearing items from home, like beanies and puffer jackets.
Term 2 Parent–Teacher Interviews will be held on Monday, 1 and Wednesday, 3 May.
The booking portal will open on Monday, 24 April.
Please look out for details on the myhaileybury app.
The Perceptual Motor Program is a series of experiences where children engage in gross motor play activities to develop skills such as eye tracking, eye-hand coordination, eye-foot coordination, balance and coordination. Children love the program and are always eager to participate.
The riders are three-wheeled for safety and the program focuses on balance, skill acquisition, confidence and coordination. This program is unique to Haileybury and therefore Newlands ELC is the only early years centre in Australia to offer the program.
Get Active Victoria is a program promoted by the state government to encourage all Victorians to engage in physical activity each day.
During the school holidays, many families living close to the ELC choose to walk or ride a bike or a scooter to the ELC. Opportunities to explore the Keysborough ovals and playgrounds were taken up by the children and their educators during the holiday program. For further information about this initiative, go to Get Active website.
The Year 4 cohort recently welcomed students from Worawa Aboriginal College to Newlands. The Worawa students had planned a morning of fun and learning and the Year 4 students rotated through three games before enjoying an art activity run by Jane Pooley and the Worawa students.
With guidance from the visiting students, the Year 4s produced artwork inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. At the end of the session, our students were very grateful to have spent time with the Worawa Aboriginal College students and to have learned more about Indigenous culture.
The recent Year 4 camp at Portsea brought thrilling challenges like the flying fox, high ropes course and giant swing, some of which were completed at night. Students also built sturdy huts and put them to the waterproof test, getting quite wet in the process.
Students had fun making keepsake keyrings with Jane Pooley in the art room and explored old army bunkers. Spending time with friends in the cabins and sharing funny stories and jokes was a favourite activity for many.
The camp was a time for fun and adventure and taught valuable life skills such as teamwork and leadership.
We welcome all Junior School mothers and special friends to join us for afternoon tea and activities to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Newlands Girls Middle School ‘Touch’ students had stars in their eyes as they met with Rugby 7s and Commonwealth gold duo, the Levi sisters. Maddison and Teagan helped Australia win its first Commonwealth Games gold medal, backing this up a few months later at the Rugby Sevens World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.
Haileybury will be offering Rugby 7s at Girls Middle School in the spring under the guidance of Aidan Ryan, Technical Director of Rugby. Hopefully, later in the year, we will enter a team in the Cattermole Cup.
Congratulations to Julia Baldy (Year 5) who achieved a gold medal in race walking at the regional Little Athletics competition. This qualified her to compete in the Victorian State Track and Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium where she achieved a silver medal.
Well done to you, Julia!
In 2022, while in Year 7, Zachary Cheng (Year 8) won his age division at the Prime Minister’s National Spelling Bee. As part of his prize, the Newlands Resource Centre was gifted $1,000 to purchase books for the library. A selection of non-fiction books and novels was purchased and has been added to the Newlands Library collection.
Early in Term 2, Year 6 students will be involved in a full day incursion as an introduction to their next Thrive unit on Financial Literacy. In this hands-on and flavoursome incursion, students embark on a quest to create a smoothie product and a marketing campaign that promotes health and wellness in their community.
Working in teams, students discover what it takes to become a business owner. They investigate the preferences of their target market, design a product and learn about cost and profit before trialling their delicious and nutritious blends.
Once they have the ultimate smoothie recipe, students use their digital literacy and design skills to create marketing materials to promote their product and brand.
This session will be run by Elephant Ed, a leading education provider endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner. This webinar is designed specifically for parents or carers with students in Years 7 and 8 to support their child in building respectful relationships.
Please register online and find out the latest legalities surrounding consent and strategies to open the conversation about consent at home.

What a wonderful end to Term 1 for our ELC and Junior School students at Newlands.
The day started with the annual Easter Hat Parade, followed by an Easter Egg Hunt and then an end of term assembly where the Newlands Easter Egg Raffle prize baskets were presented to 16 lucky students.
We give a huge shout-out to the amazing Linette Grossi who organised the Junior School Easter Egg Hunt and hid over 3,000 Easter eggs throughout the Junior School for excited students to find.
Thank you also to our Junior School Year Level Reps: Emily Anderson, Shelly Fernando Gunawardana and Jonelle Colabufalo.
Please remember the HPFK Uniform Shop is open during the school holidays on Saturday, 22 April from 9:00 am – 12 noon for all your winter uniform needs.
In Term 2 we look forward to our annual Mother’s Day Stall, HPFK Luncheon and Senior School Fundraising Barbecue.

For all members of the Haileybury Pangea community, our first term has been a rich learning experience. For teachers, learning is something that is inherently part of our practice, and it is especially valuable in a context that embraces enterprise and innovation.
In 2023, we have continued our engagement with internationally renowned blended learning expert Heather Staker. She has partnered with us to deliver professional development modules for teachers, learning designers and Heads of Department.
Heather brings her experience across a wide variety of school contexts and learning models to provoke our thinking about how we can deliver educational excellence for self-motivated, academically driven students who thrive in a more flexible model of learning. We look forward to continuing our learning with Heather in Term 2.
A highlight of daily life at Haileybury Pangea is hearing the incredibly diverse and interesting stories of our students as they pursue their passions and personal goals while balancing their academic studies.
Throughout Term 1, Milo Botterill (Year 9) has been in California pursuing his snowboarding career. He has successfully juggled time zones, training and school-work throughout the term.
We are thrilled to share that Milo recently won the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association National Championships for Snowboarding in Slopestyle in the 14 years and under category. We congratulate Milo on this momentous achievement and look forward to hearing more stories of his time in California!

The Haileybury College Year 12 Formal took place on the last evening of Term 1 at the Sofitel Melbourne. The event is always a social highlight for the students and a little bit of rain certainly didn’t dampen spirits.
Overseen by the Haileybury College, Heads of House and members of the Senior School leadership team, the students enjoyed dinner and dancing in the ballroom, with photos taken with their peers and teachers throughout the evening.
It was a wonderful opportunity for Year 12 students to celebrate the end of their first term and to temporarily put aside the academic rigors of the past couple of months. Instead, the special friendships and camaraderie forged throughout their final year came to the fore. It was a fantastic way to begin the break and to have some fun as a cohort.
Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have been named as members of the 2023 Student Representative Council (SRC) for their respective year levels.
I would like to heartily congratulate those who put themselves forward for leadership positions and who were elected by their peers.
Haileybury offers many opportunities for student leadership and supports those in leadership positions to work together to make our School a wonderful place.
The subject selection process will begin in Term 2 for students in Years 9, 10 and 11. Our upcoming Year 10 (2024) Information Video for all Pre-Senior parents and students will be released on Tuesday, 2 May via our myHaileybury app.
The Subject Expo will be held on Tuesday, 23 May and details of this event will follow. Parents and students will be able to access material that will help them make good subject choices.
It may also be helpful to visit VTAC (the centralised admissions centre for most undergraduate university and TAFE courses) and the VCAA (the body that sets guidelines for what students from Prep to Year 12 learn in Victorian schools).
Please remember that you can always make an appointment with one of our Careers advisors if you have any questions. Your child’s Head of House or relevant Head of Pre-Senior can help you make these appointments.
Armed with bags of Easter eggs and delicious treats, Edrington held its annual Easter Egg Stall on Tuesday, 28 and Wednesday, 29 March. The baked goods and chocolate were a hit with Edrington raising over $1,800 for their charity, One Girl.
On Friday, 24 March, Sholto Black held their 13th Annual Charity Downball Tournament in the Berwick Boys Pre-Senior quadrangle. A BBQ and free dress day were also part of the event.
Berwick students from Years 9–12 took part during lunchtime and raised over $800 for Beyond Blue.
The Grand Final match pitted Johnathan Llerena (Year 11) against Callen Brydon (Year 9) and, in a nailbiter, Jonathan prevailed. A great time was had by all for the sake of a good cause.
Business Management Units 3 and 4 students visited the Yakult factory to apply their classroom theory to a real business.
Students saw how an automated production line works in real time, witnessed computer aided manufacturing capable of producing 33,000 bottles of Yakult per hour and learned why quality control is so important to a product. They also discovered more about how a business applies Corporate Social Responsibility in many aspects of their manufacturing.
Congratulations to Thomas Battye (Year 10) on receiving his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze level award.
A reminder that students wear winter uniform in Term 2. However, we have two weeks at the beginning of the term when students may continue to wear their summer uniform.

As many of you already know, our 2023 Senior production is The SpongeBob Musical.
Based on the world-famous cartoon that has inspired 13 seasons and four feature films, this musical has everything you would expect from the hilarious series.
This perfect event for the whole family is packed with wonderful designs, outstanding performances and great sounds from musical legends such as David Bowie, Aerosmith and Cindy Lauper.
Nick Waxman
Head of Drama and Theatre Studies
I hope all Music students and their families have enjoyed a restful break.
A short pause from instrumental lessons and ensemble rehearsal has been an opportunity to recharge and get ready for a busy season of concerts in Term 2.
For a number of Senior School Music staff, the Easter break has involved preparing for The SpongeBob Musical pit orchestra. In line with other leading independent schools, Haileybury has hired the orchestral scores used for professional productions of this musical around the world. Our 16-piece staff band will accompany our talented cast when the show opens next week.
This musical is suitable for all ages and is an ideal opportunity for young people to enjoy their first live theatre experience. Please bring the whole family to Aikman Hall.
While the weather was far from ideal, at the end of last term a large and appreciative audience enjoyed an evening of outstanding music at Twilight Concert. The Senior School large ensembles performed pops-inspired repertoire while the audience enjoyed some delicious refreshments.
Aria Night was held in the David Bradshaw Chapel in the final week of term. This vocal competition celebrates classical voice and the finalists each performed a European art song and an aria.
It was a remarkable evening that celebrated the elite talent of our voice students and the depth of the School’s Music program.
Congratulations to all students who participated with special congratulations to Thanh Vu (Year 12), Genevieve Gray (Year 12) and Alexis King (Year 10) for their stunning performances.
Rod Marshall
Director of Performing Arts & Head of Haileybury Music
With productions underway, our student creative crews are working on all things theatre. From set to costumes, students are making props, painting backdrops and sewing the strangest of outfits. They are creating posters to tight deadlines and working in teams backstage — and they are loving it.
This experience provides students with insight into what it’s like to work in The Arts and co-curricular opportunities like this are available throughout the year.
After researching artists including Pop artists, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Year 6 students created relief print artworks featuring a personal brand or multiple images of a common object.
Rachel Hibberd’s students at Edrington brainstormed everyday objects and documented them in their visual diaries. Next, they selected the most captivating design and drew it in A5 size. Finally, they selected their top four prints and arranged them in a grid to complete the final artwork.
Andrew Weatherill’s Castlefield students created their own brands by designing illustrations that represented themselves. They then carved them and created bold relief prints.
By following a common art process, students enjoyed the journey and challenges of making a work that has similar inspiration but always has a different outcome.

The Haileybury Pipes & Drums rocked the Victorian Pipe Band Championships on Sunday, 2 April, showcasing their incredible talent and hard work.
For the first time in Haileybury’s history, the competition band (A Band) had an all-female leadership group including Pipe Major Jennifer Short (Year 12), Drum Sergeant Sofia Carollo (Year 10), Leading Tenor Braya Jade Hanssen (Year 10), Pipe Sergeant Ruby Nuttall (Year 11), and Pipe Corporal Jessie Sun (Year 10).
Haileybury #1 (A Band) scored fantastic victories in the Juvenile Novice A and Grade 4A categories and defended their 2022 state titles against fierce competition from interschool rivals Scotch College Pipes & Drums, Old Scotch Pipes & Drums, Ballarat Pipe Band and the City of Melbourne Pipe Band #2.
Having already claimed the National title in Grade 4A in 2022, the A band is now gearing up to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow this August.
But the success didn’t stop there. Haileybury #2 (B Band) also impressed the judges with their stellar performances, earning 2nd place in the Novice B medley and 3rd in the Novice B marches.
Meanwhile, Haileybury #3 (C Band) achieved an admirable 6th place in the Novice B marches, making a proud championship debut. Many of the students have been learning the pipes and drums for less than a year.
Adding to the day’s excitement, the event was held at Haileybury’s Keysborough campus, which made the victories of the Haileybury Pipes & Drums even sweeter! We could not be prouder of the Haileybury Pipes & Drums for their exceptional performances, and we look forward to the upcoming local and international competitions.
Go Haileybury!

The Haileybury Foundation Board recently committed to organising a Giving Day on Thursday, 22 June 2023.
This will be Haileybury Foundation’s second Giving Day, following the successful event in August 2022.
Community members will remember the extraordinary success of that Giving Day when more than $180,000 was raised in just over 24 hours. Those funds are currently supporting two students who joined Year 7 at Haileybury this year.
We are delighted that in 2023, the Giving Day will focus on Haileybury Rendall School.
Funds raised during the 24 hours will go towards providing a scholarship in perpetuity for local Indigenous students to attend our School. This will be life changing for many, many years to come.
We look forward to providing you with further details closer to the date. If any community members are interested in donating in advance, please contact me or any member of the team at foundation@haileybury.vic.edu.au
All gifts to Haileybury Foundation are tax deductible.
Donations can be made at here.
Thank you.
The annual Ken Phillips Day was the perfect opportunity for a pre-season hit out for the School Football team and to showcase the growth and strength of the Haileybury and Old Haileybury Football programs.
The match is named after former Haileybury staff member and Old Haileybury Football Club President, Ken Phillips. Ken was a long serving member of staff at Haileybury, Head of Berthon House, First XVIII Coach and friend to many.
In a keenly contested game under a cloudy sky, the school team prevailed over the Under 19 team who levelled the number of games won to 13 all.
The Phillips family is truly humbled that this event has been running in honour of Ken for more than 25 years.
One of Ken Phillips’ close friends was Nick ‘Tonks’ Tonkin who was the quintessential teacher. He taught Physics and Maths, was a House and Boarding master and was exceptionally good at sports. He was passionately involved in school life and communicated these enthusiasms to students.
Jean and I have lived in Torquay for the past 10 years. Each day we walk on the beach with the dog and then have coffee at a beachside café with a group of like-minded dog walkers. I play (very poor) golf and Jean splashes around in water aerobics. In the school holidays we host our nine grandchildren and their parents — occasionally all of them at the same time. Before Torquay, we lived in Ballarat for seven years and I taught part-time at Ballarat Clarendon College. Before that, we ran a small cattle farm near Mansfield where I taught at Yea High School and was involved with Mansfield Cricket Club.
I enjoyed the challenge of trying to make my subject interesting and my lessons entertaining — with limited success. I always tried to develop a rapport with my students and found dealing with the diverse range of personalities and talents a rewarding experience.
I have fond memories of the many dedicated and professional colleagues with whom I worked and the generations of talented, enthusiastic (and sometimes not so enthusiastic) students who passed through my classes. Involvement in the sport program was also rewarding.
I was head of Sholto Black House when, on a whim, I bought a black puppy. A wise friend suggested I call the dog Sholto. For 13 years, Sholto attended almost every Haileybury sporting function. She was obsessed with balls and many 12th men have been assigned as ball throwers! On one occasion she stole a hockey ball in the middle of a game. It was somewhat embarrassing to see 22 players and two refs chasing Sholto! If Mr Aikman was present, she would drop her ball at his feet which he would kick away for her if no-one was looking. I think she was impressed with the size of his shoes rather than his authority!
Thanks for staying connected, Nick!

The 2023 Victorian Age Long Course Championships were held in Melbourne over the Labour Day long weekend. Many of Haileybury’s athletes were there to represent the State. All swimmers performed admirably and many recorded Personal Best (PB) times. Congratulations to all swimmers involved.
The following swimmers qualified for the Australian Swimming Championships in April:
Congratulations to all teams who have completed the summer season of sport. Haileybury’s aim is to provide opportunities for students at all levels with the focus on participation and enjoyment.
The majority of our First teams finished the season with top three ladder positions. The Boys and Girls Badminton and Softball Teams won Premierships, the Boys Table Tennis won a Championship title, and our Girls Cricket Team finished their season undefeated.
Congratulations to all swimmers for their collective efforts during the 2023 swimming season. Teaching and coaching instilled a solid work ethic at training, and teamwork and sportsmanship were on display throughout the season.
Your performances week-to-week were a testament to your hard work and desire to achieve your best! Well done!
The Finals nights for boys and girls produced a record number of personal best times and Haileybury records. It was a wonderful team effort from both squads.
Millie Francis (Year 11) recently competed in the School Sport Australia National Triathlon Championships in Devonport, Tasmania. She was one of six girls selected from Victoria and was one of more than 30 competitors in the Senior category.
Millie was also Vice Captain of the Victorian Girls Team. She was very happy with her race, finishing 18th overall. Congratulations, Millie.

Online news from Haileybury

Director, Pipes & Drums
