During the past few days, many of you will have seen media reports concerning an impromptu social gathering arranged by a group of parents following the APS football game between Haileybury and Caulfield Grammar on Saturday, 29 July 2023.
It was with great disappointment that the School learnt that several members of staff attended this event. As a result, we immediately stood down all staff involved whilst we investigated. We have taken further disciplinary action against staff members who were regarded as having contravened professional obligations that require staff not to attend social gatherings with parents and students outside of school-organised events.
The safety and wellbeing of our students is of paramount importance to us, and the School is supporting all those involved. We are committed to taking every possible step to ensure this situation does not happen again.

You are invited to the inaugural Years 9–12 Senior School play featuring 68 cast members from City, Brighton, Berwick and Keysborough. This immersive experience is in three parts. Acts 1 and 3 are a traditional performance taking place in Aikman Hall.
In Act 2, you can choose your own adventure and use our map to navigate 16 unique spaces within Otranto Manor that will be transformed into laboratories, libraries, cellars, attics and graveyards.
While this show is for an audience of 10 years and older, it is not a haunted house. There are no terrifying surprises, just beautiful gothic atmospheres, suspense and intrigue with the performance inspired by the great gothic works of literature by Poe, Shelley, Bronte, Stoker, and Radcliffe.
As you move through the different rooms and spaces as a visitor to Otranto Manor, the veil is lifted as writers, visitors and characters from a lost era emerge from their shadowy corners to warn us of a secret that ought not be revealed.
Join Jekyll, Bertha, Frankenstein’s creature, Dracula, Havisham and many more as we unearth the mysteries of this famous house … but do not stray for too long as the house holds more than secrets in its ink-black catacombs.
Below are some photos from our weekend rehearsals.

In the first week of term, Haileybury Music Department hosted a 27-strong Chamber Choir from Haileybury school in the United Kingdom.
Two of our choirs, Haileybury Singers and Viva Voce, combined with the UK choir to perform an evening concert in the David Bradshaw Chapel at Keysborough. The concert, which was to a full house, was a wonderful celebration of the two schools joining together in a highly collaborative performance event. The performances were just spectacular.
A huge thanks to the families of Melbourne students who graciously opened their homes to host a UK visitor. It was heartening to be part of the community spirit displayed by these families who put their busy schedules aside to accommodate a guest.
I’m very confident that students from both sides of the globe have made long-term friends.
The first major concert to take place this term was the Haileybury Jazz Night on Monday, 24 July and Tuesday, 25 July. These nights have become a popular feature in the school music concert calendar.
Held at the iconic St Kilda music venue, MEMO Music Hall, 29 jazz groups performed across the two nights. Each night featured students from Middle School, Senior School and the VCE Music Program. The Haileybury Stage Band also performed on both nights.
The pictures below showcase the spectacular atmosphere of the event and the collective spirit of our Haileybury community.

For this edition of Insight, two amazing VCE students have reflected on their recent experiences of connecting with the creative industries outside the classroom.
First, senior Visual Communication Design student, Lachlan Johnston (Year 11), walks us through his recent voluntary work experience with Melbourne-based architecture firm, Architectus.
Second, senior Art Making and Exhibiting student, Angelica Karagounis (Year 12), reflects on the significance of her Unit 3 work being displayed in the Victorian Artists Society Exhibition at the beginning of Term 3.
On the first day we met the team of Architectus and the other students taking part in the work experience — two of us from Haileybury, four from around the state and one student from rural NSW. We were given a tour of the Melbourne office in the CBD, which had 360-degree views of the city including Flinders Street Station and Olympic Park. We were then taken on a tour of the historic arcades of Melbourne and learnt why they were built.
On the second day, we were given a brief to redesign a cultural pavilion at the NGV. We undertook a site visit and began to understand the flow of people throughout the precinct and how each pavilion interacted with the local environment.
During the next couple of days, we worked and attended meetings with sustainability and technology professionals, including specialists who helped us refine our concept. On the final day, we visited the State Library, which was recently refurbished by Architectus.
We then finalised our concepts and mocked up a 3D render to present to Architectus staff. Overall, this experience provided an in-depth look at the life of an architect, the environment in which they work and the processes of designing a building.
Art is so subjective and that’s what makes it so powerful. You can take a whole moment in time and express it in any way you see fit. I know my art style isn’t for everyone and that’s okay. Going into this artwork I have been so hard on myself for so many reasons, such as being irritated at how impressionistic my work looked versus other people in my class whose artworks looked like the Mona Lisa.
However, through this process, I learnt it’s not about comparison — it’s about the message the artist is trying to convey. This was an incredibly emotional piece for me because of the hidden message. It gave me so much joy being able to display my artwork in an exhibition because of the story I wanted to convey. I want to share that story with you now.
In 1943, in Kalavryta Greece, Nazi soldiers killed men and young boys and attempted to murder women and young children. Only the humanity of one German soldier who stayed behind after the local school was set on fire to free the women, children and babies from the burning school saved their lives. If only he could have saved the innocent men and boys who were lined up on the hills of Kalavryta and killed by a machine gun.
I am closely tied to this region of Greece as this is where my family are from. For many years, I wondered what it must have been like for these women who were almost burned alive to find their homes, livestock and possessions burned to the ground and to then find their husbands, fathers, uncles and sons lying dead. The weeping … the hurt. I cannot imagine.
Every time I visit this part of my heritage in Greece and see the memorial site, my heart aches. Finally, I have allowed myself to express the silence and hurt of the women of Kalavryta and their bravery in burying their loved ones and continuing on for their families. This is a huge part of who I am, and I am beyond grateful to be able to express the truth of the women of Kalavryta.
This artwork is called Ελπίδα (Elpitha) Hope.

On Saturday, 8 July, Haileybury Pipers demonstrated their exquisite talent, claiming significant victories at the State Solo Piping Championships hosted at the Presbyterian Ladies College Burwood campus.
Our star performer, Jessie Sun (Year 10) earned an impressive 2nd place overall in the C grade against a highly contested field of 13 strong performers. This is a significant leap from her Novice grade just last year.
Jessie’s sterling performance in the Piobeareachd won her the prestigious Bronze Medal, while she took third place in the march, Strathspey and reel, and fifth in the hornpipe and jig. Jessie’s unwavering consistency through the season was rewarded with the coveted title of 2nd place in the C Grade Piper of the Year aggregate table.
We also celebrated the solo debut of Dylan Tran (Year 2). Competing in the Novice grade, Dylan showcased his incredible technique on the pipes, holding his own in this highly competitive environment. His performance promises another rising star within the Haileybury Pipers.
Congratulations to Jessie and Dylan on their fantastic performances. We look forward to their continued success.

Term 3 has commenced with much excitement and focus. After three weeks away, and experiencing both warmer climates and snow escapades, we have welcomed back our students to a wonderful term of learning. The focus on how we learn and the importance of being ready, prepared, engaged and reflective has been revisited for the start of Term 3 and the final semester of 2023.
Our Junior School Semester 2 Leaders have been inducted and our Middle School students have been acknowledged for their academic attainment in Semester 1. Year 7 students headed off to Camp Jungai for their outdoor education experience and our Years 5 and 6 students put on their dancing shoes at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Through the Ages Disco. Our Prep students also celebrated attending school for 100 days this year.
So many celebrations of school life have occurred already in the first three weeks. We look forward to an exciting term and to STEM Week, Book Week, Father’s Day celebrations and the Middle School Musical, Moana Jr, on 6, 7 and 8 September. Tickets are on sale this week!
Our Parent–Teacher Interviews are being held for ELC to Year 8 parents on Monday, 21 August and Wednesday, 23 August. These will be held via Zoom and we ask that parents make a note of the dates and ensure they find a spot with minimal disruptions for the interview. Bookings will open the week before the interviews via myHaileybury. We look forward to discussing your child and their progress and continuing the partnership between home and school.
South Road is the preferred pick up and drop off location for students in Junior and Middle School, with the roundabout being an efficient way to collect your child. Staff are on duty before and after school to help children remain safe within our school gates.
For Senior School students, South Road is the only drop off and pick up area for parents who are driving their child to school. We encourage our older students to walk, ride or choose public transport as an alternative to being driven to school each day.
We have been out and about, noticing all the beautiful seasonal changes that are part of Beerreen (winter). Children have been intrigued by worms as they learn all about the amazing job these creatures do to help our gardens flourish and to reduce our waste. Songs, stories and puppets have been used to grow the children’s understanding.
The worms love our compost bin in the ELC!
After engaging in the Yam Daisy story, the children have been busy creating an indigenous garden filled with yam daisies (Murnong plant). Yams were plentiful in this area prior to colonisation, and they provided a staple diet for the Boonwurrung people. Cows and sheep trampled the plants and enjoyed them as a delicacy, virtually eradicating the plants locally. The ELC will care for this garden and watch the planted seeds grow over time. Hopefully, we will be able to roast our own yams on the fire!
As we focus on Child Safe Standard 3, we implement strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children. It’s important for us as a community to encourage children to speak up and for adults to listen if any child feels unsafe or uncomfortable. This poster may support young children to speak up and discuss their thoughts and feelings.
Congratulations to our Semester 2 House Leaders who were inducted into their roles at the beginning of the term. Leader-run recess and lunchtime clubs are back, and we thank the leaders for their service to our school.
It’s great to see our Junior School students return from the holiday break and get straight back into their learning. Establishing a routine for school is crucial for young students as it fosters a sense of stability and predictability and reduces feelings of stress.
A consistent schedule helps them develop good time management skills, promoting a healthy balance between academic tasks and leisure activities. How does your child organise their homework routine? Who prepares their uniform and bag ready for the morning?
Yard duty commences at 8.10 am each morning. Please do not drop children to school before this time unless they are accompanied by an adult, or unless they are arriving for a music lesson.
Please remember that Junior School students can only be collected after school in one of three ways:
Junior School students are not permitted to leave the school grounds by themselves. They must always be accompanied by a teacher.
As our Preps arrived at their 100th day of school, it was a nice time to reflect on some of their favourite moments of the year so far.
We’ve had a positive and energetic return to Term 3 after a well-deserved break for our students, staff, families and the whole community.
We start Semester 2 with a fresh set of eyes, an understanding of the School’s expectations and with a growth mindset that supports our students to ask the question ‘where to next?’ This semester is about exhibiting work ethic, effort and behaviours that emulate the next year level that is within arm’s reach.
Term 3 offers a range of experiences and new opportunities including STEM Week, Book Week, the School Musical Moana Jr, and chances to hone new and existing skills, to take up new challenges and to get involved in the vibrant Middle School life.
The campus is abuzz with Moana Jr rehearsals as we work towards an exciting and impressive stage musical. Our talented young cast was delighted to see the set coming to life and now enter the stage of refining songs, dances and quality acting.

After a fantastic mid-year break, our school community is recharged and ready to take on Term 3. The Years 5 and 6 disco was a hit, thanks to the help of Year 8 students and teachers. Upcoming events include the Father’s Day Stall on Wednesday, 30 and Thursday, 31 August, along with a special Father’s Day celebration.
Remember that the Second-Hand Uniform Shop (SHUS) is your go-to for all uniform needs.

While the summer break continues and students and teachers are travelling, Haileybury Tianjin is still a busy place. Over recent weeks, the School has hosted several summer schools including a Spelling Bee Summer School and a Robotics Camp.
The holidays are an opportunity for our students to participate in several interesting study tours. The Australian Tour has students visiting Sydney and Melbourne with the chance to visit Sydney University and the University of New South Wales and take part in some specially organised lectures. In Melbourne, the students will visit The University of Melbourne and spend some time at Haileybury Melbourne.
Each year, staff from Haileybury Tianjin visit Haileybury in Melbourne to continue their professional development and learning. Over the past month Barbara Zhu (Primary School English), Claire Zhang (Middle School Mathematics), Chao Zhao (VCE EAL), Sylvia Gao and Iris Zhao (VCE Mathematics), Alex Zhang (Head of Year 12), and Cathy Qi (Head of Senior School) attended Haileybury Melbourne.
Tianjin staff gained valuable knowledge within their own focus areas and were allocated a mentor, observed different teachers’ classes and discussed teaching and how to manage different working conditions. All our staff commented that the collaboration between Haileybury Tianjin and Haileybury Melbourne helps us maintain the strong feeling that we are one School.
Recently, two teams of Year 11 students participated in the World Scholars’ Cup Beijing Regional Round. They performed very well and won six gold medals and two silver medals. Both teams qualified for the Global Final Round to be held in Xiamen. Successful teams will be invited to the annual World Scholars’ Tournament of Champions at Yale University.

It was a delight to welcome back our Old Haileyburians who now have children at the City campus. We currently have 23 City families who are OHA parents. We love welcoming them back to reminisce about the good old days!
Sam Redston (OHA 1990), who was School Captain, shared fond memories about time at Keysborough and the excitement of living Haileybury 2.0 through Santrix, who is in Year 11 at City. You may have heard Santrix sing or play one of five instruments at the Middle School Music Concert, Jazz Night, the SpongeBob Musical or many other performances.
We are so proud to hear how school has changed to be even better in the 2.0 version. There was a lot of love and pride in the room at our breakfast!
Our Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 have completed NAPLAN and our staff have been carefully analysing the data. We are delighted with the growth of our students and their strong academic performance, especially compared to the national average and to similar schools. Parents should have received their child’s NAPLAN results by now.
Thank you to our City families for supporting your children to make such a positive start to the term. We love welcoming back our students and setting goals for each term. Routines are so important to help our young people eat, sleep, and learn well.
Building connections within our community promotes a sense of belonging for children and Reception children made the most of a chance to visit Haileybury’s Inside Out court, part of our Out and About Program.
We discussed road safety and how we can keep each other safe, and the children were especially excited as we arrived at the court, and they noticed there was a fire station close by!
Reception children practised their gross motor skills as they rolled, threw, and bounced balls and used the parachute. We look forward to our next visit to Inside Out and invite families to join us.
Pre-Prep children are deepening their knowledge and understanding as they explore similarities and differences between themselves and their peers. Children are learning that we are all unique through the exploration of abstract art styles, including self-portraits. This has inspired discussions as children build an understanding of their self-identity and the importance of being different.
Children have been presented with many opportunities in the classroom as they learn more about themselves, their peers, and the impact they have on the world.
Prep students have reached a very special milestone — 100 days of school!
Led by Tracey Cronin, the Preps prepared a sentence to read aloud at a celebratory event on the City’s rooftop that featured parent guests, music, chocolate freckles and fairy bread!
We’re so proud of each of our Preps and look forward to supporting their growth as they continue their Junior School journey.
A new semester has seen the formal induction of our Year 4 Junior School Leaders for Semester 2. Supported by their peers who took on leadership roles in Semester 1, we look forward to seeing these students thrive in their new roles:
Please note that some Junior School Assemblies listed in Term 3 Key Dates have been replaced with incursions and events and so some parents will not be required to attend.
On Thursday, 27 July our Year 5 students took part in an incursion run by The Mini BOSS Team. Throughout the day, they had to be innovative, creative and enterprising to address a real-world design challenge for a global brand. Our students enjoyed working in teams to brainstorm, design, create, market, and pitch their product to their teachers and peers.
On Tuesday, 1 August Haileybury City Campus hosted the Melbourne Big Ideas Challenge. Powered by Future Anything, the Challenge is a fast-paced, hands-on day of entrepreneurial learning and doing. It culminates in teams of students pitching their innovative solutions to a complex, local issue.
Haileybury City Campus hosted 140 students from seven Melbourne schools for this special event. Representing Haileybury, 20 entrepreneurially minded Year 7 and 8 students took part and thoroughly enjoyed hearing from some of Australia’s most inspiring changemakers.
Thank you to Damien Meunier, Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, for organising this wonderful event.
Congratulations to Year 8 student Tharuli Wimalasooriya for achieving Level 4 of the Compass Awards and for undertaking a program of physical activity, hobbies, volunteering and exploration.
Through the Compass Program, students aged 10 to 13 choose their own interesting and challenging activities. The award gives participants the opportunity to try new activities and learn new skills, while developing their initiative and commitment.
We congratulate Tharuli for the significant contribution she has made to the community.
Caroline Merrick
Head of City
It has been a very busy start to Term 3, and I am grateful for the lovely break that was a time to recharge and relax. I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy a bit of down time over the winter holidays.
The end of Term 2 brought the return of the Pre-Senior Students from their Options and Expeditions camps. Ten nights away is a big chunk of time, but the chatter at the tables on the night of their return demonstrated that many lifelong memories were created during the time away. How lucky our students are to have such wonderful experiences.
Thanks to the Haileybury staff for all the effort they put in to make the camps so successful. It was lovely to have my teenager back in the house!
The City Second-Hand Uniform Shop is catching up with technology. The next time the shop opens, a new Point of Sale system will be in use. It will be very exciting to not have to use calculators or hand write labels. The new system will also have a complete record of all items we have in stock. It will reduce the administration time required from volunteers to run the shop. We will notify you of the next pop-up shop day via the myHaileybury app.
In the coming week, we will send out a quick survey asking for feedback on the Second-Hand Uniform Shop and to help us plan shop dates going forward. Also, if you can volunteer to assist on pop-up shop days, or to label items, please let us know.
We are planning a special Middle School family night (yes, bring the kids), for Friday, 8 September! Pop the date in the calendar and keep an eye out for details on the myHaileybury app. Hint: you will need your ‘smarts’ for the evening!
All the best to the students who are competing in Adelaide at the National Dance and Aerobics Competition at the weekend.
Have a wonderful long weekend, stay warm, and enjoy the start of Semester 2!

President, Haileybury Parents & Friends City
Our school is a unique and wonderful place to work. Since acquiring Kormilda College at the end of 2017, we have spent the past six years growing from 400 students to 950 students and bringing many talented and energetic staff on our journey.
HRS is now the largest and most successful independent co-educational school in the Northern Territory and a school of choice for great teachers from across Australia and the world.
We work as a community to fulfil the school’s mission: to develop high-achieving students who are connected globally, to each other, and to the communities in which they live and will serve. It’s professionally rewarding to work with dedicated staff who share the common belief that every student and every team member matters every day.
There are so many options to develop a teaching career at HRS. We have around 100 boarders living on-site — mostly Indigenous students from remote communities and we also support international students and domestic boarders. We are many cultures and one community who embrace diversity and learn about each other.
We also have some staff accommodation on site that new teachers can take advantage of while settling into Darwin life. For teachers relocating from interstate, we also offer allowances to support the transition, including flights and some other expenses.
Ongoing, relevant and meaningful professional development is a big focus for staff at HRS. Every Tuesday afternoon includes 90 minutes of sharing and learning on topics that align to our school goals and intentions. We also provide opportunities for staff to attend live and online conferences to further develop their knowledge and leadership skills. Our staff are our greatest asset, and we look after them.
We set high expectations for staff and students, and we know that brilliant teaching and strong relationships are fundamental to an engaging and rewarding learning experience for all. New HRS staff are supported via a detailed induction and mentoring process and graduates are given extra support and coaching and reduced face-to-face teaching time.
Across HRS, there are many leadership roles and opportunities and many career paths can be accelerated through quality service.
Teaching at HRS also means you become part of the massive, world-renowned educational system known simply as ‘One Haileybury’. Our Darwin staff visit Melbourne campuses and there is the possibility of connecting with Haileybury’s communities in China, the UK, Vietnam and Timor Leste.
The wonderful Darwin climate, healthy lifestyle and famous tourist destinations at our doorstep are also great reasons to come and work with us.
Importantly, we have great staff, fantastic kids and a strong positive community of family and friends who enjoy every moment of our exciting journey.

Principal, Haileybury Rendall School
This week, we have our performances of the Middle School Musical, The Wizard of Oz Jr. These performances are a culmination of months of work from students and teachers and under the guidance of director, Candice Anderson, the students have prepared a singing, dancing, acting extravaganza that is sure to please audiences!
If you haven’t already got your tickets, you can purchase them through the TryBooking link here. We hope to see you all there!
As a part of our School Readiness Funding, our children and families can strengthen their body safety knowledge through Body Safety Australia’s ‘Superstars’ program. This program empowers and educates children to understand and communicate their right to have full control of their own body.
Informing and involving families and communities in child safety and wellbeing is essential. Information about what children will learn was recently shared with families through a Parent Information Session. Thank you to all who attended.
We love celebrating the 100th Day of School with our Prep students and our Year 1s love joining in the fun, too. Not only did our students look 100, but they also completed lots of activities based on the number 100. They sang beautifully at Assembly. It was a fantastic day!
Our Music Captains, Sophie Kimm (Year 8) and Ryley Dang (Year 8) have been working hard to host lunchtime concerts to promote the great work of our Music Department. Last week, we were fortunate enough to hear solo performances from Ashwanth Franklin (Year 8), Sophie Kimm (Year 8) and Sarah Rather (Year 6). These performances are just a snippet of the talent we have at Edrington.
We are so proud of these students for the determination they demonstrate to prepare for these performances.
We held our House Public Speaking competition in Week 3 and were delighted to see so many students entering. Our topic this year was ‘It only takes one person to make a change’. We heard so many different interpretations inspired by Nobel prize-winners, celebrities and even teachers! Well done to all involved.

You can register now here.
Newlands ELC Pre-Prep children have been invited to participate in the City of Greater Dandenong Adopt a Park initiative. The children have been given an area in Tattersalls Park to plant bush tucker and indigenous plants under the guidance of the council’s horticulturalists. They will also take part in an environmental education session on topics including how to create bird-attracting and pollinator gardens.
The children’s participation will be recognised with Adopt a Park signage and the children will also be invited to family event days held at the park. We encourage parents who wish to accompany children to arrange a Working with Children Check.
Further details will be sent through the Moments app. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to engage in the natural environment within their local community and learn how to care for it.
We are delighted to confirm Department of Education funding for the Chinese Language Program delivered at Newlands ELC. Funding will continue until 30 June 2027.
Silvia Wang has worked tirelessly to establish this program and she has attended professional development sessions and written the curriculum. The program is highly valued by children, educators, and families.
Prep students recently celebrated their 100th day at school. The students came dressed as if they were 100-year-olds and we saw lots of thoughtful costumes. We commenced the day with a concert in the hall so parents and special friends could enjoy some of the songs the children had learned in choir.
All the Preps enjoyed a special party lunch together in the Quad and finished the day with a delicious cupcake. The Prep teachers are so proud of all the students for their remarkable achievements in the first 100 days.
We invite fathers and special friends to join us on Friday, 1 September for an unforgettable Father and Special Friend’s Day Celebration at our Junior School.
At 2:00 pm refreshments will be served on the lawn outside the Resource Centre. Then, fathers and special friends will accompany their children on a fun-filled exploration of the school and join in games and activities. It’s a day not to be missed!
Excitement is in the air as Book Week 2023 approaches! Get ready to join an enchanting literary journey at Newlands, where imagination knows no bounds and stories come to life.
From Saturday, 19 August to Friday, 25 August, our school will celebrate the magic of words, the power of storytelling and the joy of reading through the theme Read, Grow, Inspire. The Junior School Book Week Parade will be held in Newlands Sports Hall on Friday, 25 August at 10:45 am and parents are encouraged to attend.
Year 5 recently participated in The Brief incursion by MiniBOSS as part of their Vocational Capability unit for Term 3. Students developed their collaboration, creativity, and entrepreneurial skills by creating a new product for Kmart.
The challenge culminated in a team pitch with students delivering a prototype and presentation to persuade the ‘executives’ to buy their creation.
All Year 5 students across Melbourne will be able to watch a special school performance of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall during 2023. On Friday, 18 August, our Year 5 BMS students will be part of this experience. They will tour the National Gallery of Victoria and the Vault sculpture, and explore the permanent display and a range of Australian works at the NGV.
This excursion links with Haileybury’s Year 5 Band Program, where each student can learn a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument for a semester.
Our Middle School Father’s Day celebration will take place on Friday, 1 September from 8.30 am – 10.00 am at Southern Golf Club. We will serve some delicious breakfast dishes to honour all the fathers and father figures who play an essential role in raising our brilliant Newlands students.
In addition to the breakfast, we have planned some fun surprises and activities for everyone. Bookings are essential.

Haileybury Pangea students continue to make the most of their independence and flexibility so they can pursue their passions beyond the curriculum:
We love to hear the stories of our students and encourage all families to get in touch with us to share their adventures and achievements.
The final week of Term 2 brought special celebrations as part of Languages Week with activities led by Madame Adelaide Swift-Brown. Highlights of the week included languages trivia, a French movie night, a macaron baking competition, dress-up day, and, of course, our Languages Week Assembly.
It was brilliant to see so many students get involved, whether they study a language or not, and we learned so much about our diverse backgrounds and the many languages spoken across the campus (yes, Mr Orton can speak more than un poco Español!). We thank Madame Swift-Brown for a wonderful week of activities.

Rendall House students, ably supported by their Head of House, Mr Marc Vegter, recently raised over $10,000 for their House charity, Fight MND. Their fundraising efforts included selling Fight MND beanies and socks to students from ELC to Year 12 and a fundraising and MND awareness event on Friday, 9 June that included a teacher ice-bucket challenge and BBQ.
The Fight MND movement has a significant link to the Haileybury community. The Foundation was founded by the late Dr Ian Davis (OH 1995) and in 2011, at the age of 33, Ian was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and died in late 2018. In 2019, Ian was posthumously awarded the Old Haileyburians Association Medal, the Association’s highest honour. As a community, we continue his fight.
The inaugural Berwick Senior School Winter Festa was held at lunchtime on Friday, 2 June. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny afternoon and all the Years 9–12 students who attended, organised by the Berwick student leaders, were unanimous that it was a great success.
The Twisted Temptations Food Truck was extremely popular and served close to 200 potato spirals. The BBQ was also a big hit, selling out of sausages in record time. Students and staff were entertained by different music ensembles featuring students from the Middle School and Senior School and the activities on the Main Oval were very popular.
Students wore free dress for the day and the proceeds from their gold coin donation plus the profit from the BBQ raised over $750. This will be equally allocated to the chosen charities supported by Edrington (One-Girl) and Sholto Black (Beyond Blue).
We hope the 2023 student leaders have created a legacy for the future with this initiative becoming an annual event at Berwick.
As we approached the end of a very busy Term 2, it was the turn of Year 12 students at Haileybury Girls College to have their night of glamour and fun. Their formal was held at The Glasshouse in the city — a beautiful venue with the Yarra River on one side and the lights of AAMI Park on the other.
The students were impeccably behaved with the DJ working hard all night as the dancefloor became a way to let go of the stresses of Year 12 and to just enjoy each other’s company. The photobooth also had a steady stream of students taking happy snaps to remember the night.
These nights cannot run smoothly without the enthusiastic participation of the students, the generous support of the Senior School leadership team, and the dedication of the Haileybury Girls College Heads of House.
It was a wonderful night for everyone who attended and a lovely welcome from the Year 12s for our new Deputy Principal, Head of Senior Schools, Dr Nicholas Grigsby.

From Tuesday, 27 June to Saturday, 15 July, 16 Haileybury students embarked on an 18-day trip to Nepal. Their journey consisted of seven days of trekking through the Annapurna region, and five days of community service at the Nagajuna School in Pokhara.
They were accompanied by Ms Tamsin Visick and Mr Eamonn Johnson, who shared their valuable insight into leadership and resilience throughout the trip.
From Day 4 to Day 10, we completed the Poon Hill trek in the Annapurna region, led by our guide, Birsingh, and his incredible World Expeditions team. This involved navigating impressive mountain views, rushing waterfalls and rural villages and meeting the occasional water buffalo along the way. Despite the adversities we faced in rain, leeches and sickness, we persevered and enjoyed a truly extraordinary experience.
The second section of the trip involved community service at the Nagajuna School in Pokhara, which gives rural children access to quality education. Haileybury has been involved in several projects at the school. During this trip, we painted and organised a library that was funded by the recent initiatives of Haileybury Middle School students.
Our other projects included painting the boys’ and girls’ dormitories and the stairwell and teaching two classes each to the Nagajuna students. There was a wide variety of lessons, such as AFL, bracelet making, reading and art. We created murals for the library and stairwell that featured educational material and Australian iconography.
All 1,700 library books were separated into genres and indexed by hand. On the final day of the community service, the library was formally opened, and students were encouraged to borrow their first library book.
Overall, the experience gave us a sense of purpose and accomplishment and encouraged each of us to reflect on ourselves and our values. A key feature of the trip was the new friendships that we made, with our peers and with the people we met in Nepal.
The Nepal trip supports the Adventurous Journey and Gold Residential Project sections of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, an internationally recognised youth program. All Senior School students are welcome to attend the outdoor experiences offered during Terms 1 and 2 and at end of year term breaks. Trips are advertised through Insight and on the Haileybury Duke of Edinburgh Canvas page — In2Adventure.
If you are interested in completing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, please contact Tasmin Visick via email.

Henry Gibson (Year 8) has been accepted into the TeamVic School Sport Victoria (SSV) diving team which competes at the School Sport Australia Nationals Championships in Sydney in August. He will compete in the individual 1m springboard.
Henry is also training on the 3m springboard and aims to start platform diving later this year. He dives three to four times a week and is hoping to fit in some further training at MSAC.
We wish him all the best for August.
Jake Santalucia (Year 10) is having some great success in his motor racing driving Formula Ford. He is currently competing in the Vic and National Championships and has run 4th in both. He won the most recent Victorian round at Winton in April, qualifying first and winning his three races.
Jake also won the most recent National Round at Symmons Plains in Tasmania, qualifying 4th and finishing 1st in Race 1, 1st in Race 2, and 2nd in Race 3. Each race was televised live on Foxtel and Kayo.
Avril Charman (Year 10) has made the Victorian Equestrian Interschool team for the National Interschool Equestrian Championships held later in the year in Melbourne. Avril recently participated in the Woady Horse Trials and won the CNN2 event and came 3rd in the CNN1 event on her second horse.
Madeleine Leonard (Year 8) has qualified for the Victorian Equestrian Interschool team in the 105cm Combined Training event, which includes Show Jumping and Dressage. Madeline will also ride in the National Interschool Equestrian Championships in Melbourne
We wish both girls luck for their upcoming competitions.
Tommy Lane (Year 12) he has been selected to represent Australia in the pool at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in August. Tommy’s selection is on the back of his strong performances at the Australian Age Swimming Championships in April.
A small team of 10 swimmers will represent Australia and Tommy is the only Victorian. That’s quite an achievement. The Commonwealth Youth Games will take place from Wednesday, 4 to Friday, 11 August. We wish Tommy all the best.

Haileybury recently hosted the next round of the 2023 Melbourne South Division of the Fuse Cup. The Fuse Cup is an international school eSports competition that provides students with an opportunity to participate in safe, inclusive, supportive and structured school-based eSports and to build positive gaming behaviours and digital well-being.
At the event, students competed in Super Mario Deluxe 8, with the event hosted at Newlands amazing new space in the Gadsden Pavilion. Approximately 100 students from neighbouring schools competed.
In week 5 of this term, Haileybury Newlands will celebrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Week as part of the Curious Minds Program. This year, STEM Week will coincide with National Science Week and the theme of Innovation: Powering future industries.
From Monday, 14 August until Friday, 18 August, students will participate in a broad range of activities and explore innovations that are changing our world.
Each lunchtime during STEM Week, activities will also be on offer to Junior and Middle School students that will engage and fascinate them. Highlights include growing vegetables using hydroponics, developing and launching bottle rockets, going back in time using Virtual Reality and designing robots. For a full list of the activities on offer, watch out for the 2023 Newlands STEM Week poster.
It will be a very exciting week.
We have a parent webinar for the Junior School on Wednesday, 30 August at 7.00 pm which will be presented by the Cyber Safety Project. Called ‘Learning, Connecting and Playing Safely Online’, the webinar provides parents and carers with insights and important information about popular online experiences that children can be exposed to.

Joanna Baker
Head of Campus
