Haileybury is a not-for-profit charitable entity. The School is fortunate to be governed by an outstanding skills-based council. Council members are committed to Haileybury delivering great education outcomes and receive no remuneration or other reward for their time, expertise and effort in contributing to the School.
In 2024 Haileybury has a new Chair with Professor Gregory Whitwell taking over from long-time Chair Tom Poulton who led the School through a period of great success for Haileybury students and considerable growth for the School.
A graduate of Haileybury, Professor Whitwell has had a long career in leadership at some of Australia’s most pre-eminent universities. He retired at the end of 2022 from the position of Dean of the University of Sydney Business School. Professor Whitwell has a lifelong commitment to the transformative power of education.

Haileybury is redefining our co-curricular program with a view to implement phased changes from 2025 for Senior School students (Years 9–12).
Our goal is to design a program that enables our students to have greater choice in how they engage in the broad range of co-curricular offerings, including Haileybury Sport. This comes as an acknowledgement of the responsibility our Senior School students are ready for in choosing how they spend their valuable time.
For 2025, one option Haileybury is considering is enabling our Senior School students to choose whether they participate in one, two or three seasons of Haileybury Sport. Currently our program requires them to participate in a minimum of two seasons. Haileybury believes that physical activity is an important part of an excellent educational program and offers numerous physical, social and emotional health benefits. For this reason, we will continue to provide our Senior School students with the option to participate in sport all year round if they choose to. Conversely, we are excited about the idea of facilitating further choice for our students who choose to only participate in one or two seasons of Haileybury Sport by providing options that support their wide and diverse range of passions and interests through our co-curricular program.
To inform the program model, our 2025 Senior School cohort will be asked to participate in a brief survey. Their voices will be instrumental in shaping how Haileybury delivers co-curricular programs from 2025 and beyond.
I understand that our parents and guardians may also have views that they would like to share on this option, or perhaps the shape of the program more broadly. Please feel free to do so via this form.

Haileybury’s review of the sport and co-curricular program is taking place concurrently with a review of APS sport — of which Haileybury is a member.
The parameters of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) review are outlined in a statement from the APS Principals and Heads.
The APS sporting program has been a key feature of the Victorian sporting landscape for well over 100 years.
A key aim of the APS Sport program is to be responsive to the changing needs of students, while respecting our heritage. In recent years, it has become clear to the APS Principals that our existing offerings do not necessarily address the needs and wants of all our students, particularly regarding extra/co-curricular activities. In addition, the operational challenges of the existing APS Sport program are growing, as the scale of the APS student cohort increases.
As such, the APS Principals have unanimously agreed to conduct a strategic 2024 review of the APS Sport program. A copy of the strategic review’s scope is linked here.

Term 1 is underway, and the start of the new school year brings with it all kinds of exciting possibilities. It can also be a time of uncertainty though, as students settle into a new grade, new routines, new subjects and classroom structures, or a new school entirely.
These sorts of changes can be a source of stress and anxiety for many young people, particularly if they are already feeling some pressures from outside their learning environment. In knowing what signs to look out for, though, we can all provide students with safe opportunities to share their stress and uncertainties, navigate the new and embrace change as a positive thing.
Every young person is unique — and so too are the reasons they might be feeling more stress and anxiety at the start of the new school year. For many this stress stems from a fear of the unknown. After having spent the past year building a sense of belonging in their previous learning environment, a new year means having to reset this sense of security — and adapt to new routines, new subjects, new teaching styles and, possibly, new fellow students.
As students make their way through the school levels, they might feel more academic pressure — such as when they are making the transition from primary to secondary school. Reflecting on new expectations from teachers, parents and their own standards can make the prospect of another year feel like an obstacle, instead of an exciting opportunity.
A potential shift in their classmates or friendships could also see an increase in anxiety. Your children might be anxious about not having their friends in their class, or the need to make new friends entirely.
While no two students are likely to have the exact same response to stress and anxiety, there are certain signs to look out for. On a physical level, fidgeting and an inability to sit still, biting fingernails or choosing to isolate themselves in their room could suggest your child is feeling uneasy about this time of the year.
You might also notice them having strong emotional reactions, such as easily getting angry or upset. Changes in their sleeping and eating habits can also be a sign of stress and anxiety — as is repeatedly asking questions or commenting on settling into the school year. These shifts suggest feelings of upheaval and uncertainty kicking in.
There are several ways you can support your child or children through any anxiety they are feeling about change — with open communication being key to this support.

To help with this, try to create a ‘be there’ environment where your child feels comfortable to talk through how they are feeling and raise any questions or concerns they might have with you. Remember that children do not have the same perspective as adults just yet, so it is important not to downplay their worries.
Creating this sort of open, compassionate environment then gives you a platform to reframe change and how to respond to it. Some of the ways you might choose to do this could be:
Ultimately, connecting your child with the right support can help them feel safe and confident to navigate change. Encourage them to connect with buddies or mentors at school, such as teachers, Heads of House or the School Nurses and Psychologists — or reach out to family members, or a sports coach they feel comfortable with.
The beginning of a new school year can be tough for young people for all kinds of reasons, but they do not have to worry on their own. By recognising why Term 1 can bring feelings of stress and anxiety and knowing what signs to look out for, we can all provide young people with a safe, supportive environment to see change as a positive, so that they embrace the entire school year with confidence, curiosity and optimism.
Top Class is an annual concert series coordinated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) showcasing outstanding performances by VCE and VCE VET students from schools across the state.
Congratulations to the impressive amount of VCE Dance, Drama and Theatre Studies students invited to present their work for the 2024 Top Class season.
35% of the cohort were invited to present their outstanding dance solos, drama performances or monologue interpretations for the VCAA.
We also had many students selected to perform at the Season of Excellence, including Emma (Year 12), Manal (OH 2023), Genevieve (OH 2023), and Teleetha (Year 12).
This places these students’ dance and drama cohort in the top 5% of the state, an impressive result for Dance, Drama and Theatre Studies.

Senior School City play – Stories in the Dark
Presented at Iconic Melbourne theatre venue, Chapel off Chapel, Stories in the Dark explores the power of storytelling, mingling the magic and earthy wisdom of folk tales with the hard-edged story of violence, conflict and the struggle to survive.
Theatre Studies play – The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon
This student led production is designed, directed, conceptualised and coordinated by the 2024, Unit 3 Theatre Studies students. The play, a farcical one-act comedy is designed to delight and amuse as you learn the muddled-up version of 209 Grimm brothers stories.

Being a participant in music making is a truly special experience. It is a form of self-expression that allows individuals to connect with their creativity, and with others in a deeply collaboratively way.
The pathway to creating high quality music is a journey that requires dedication, patience, and flair. The result of prolonged creative and technical growth is always worth it when a performance comes to life and is shared with an appreciative audience.
Last Monday night the Performing Arts and Visual Arts were celebrated at Haileybury’s Encore of Excellence event held in Aikman Hall. Drawing from the concept of the VCAA Season of Excellence Series, which recognises the most outstanding work from Dance, Drama, Music and the Visual Arts, Encore of Excellence showcased some of the very best work presented by our Visual and Performing Arts students in last year’s 2023 VCE examination period.
A large highly appreciative audience, were dazzled by the diversity of skill and talent that was on display for the 90-minute experience.
The Arts has the power to move us, to make us feel, to evoke memories and to connect us with one another. Being an active participant in the Arts is a way to harness that power, to bring those feelings and experiences to life, and to share them with others. Speaking for the teachers, as educators we are indeed fortunate to have front row seats to see these amazing talents emerge right before our eyes and ears.
Since the Haileybury Pipe Organ Scholars Program was established back in 2010 to celebrate what was then 50 years of organ music at Haileybury (now 64 years of organ music), many of our organ scholars have gained invaluable life experience and cultural awareness travelling overseas as part of the program.
Haileybury organ scholars have visited, stayed and performed at British educational institutions ranging from Eton College to Oundle School and Cambridge University and, recently, we established an exchange program with Haileybury UK.
Last December, Joshua (Year 12) — Boys’ Senior Organ Scholar — travelled to London where he was met by Dr Stephan Muller, Deputy Principal (Education Research & Int'l.). Exploring London, Joshua reached a step count of 45,000 steps over just two days!
Joshua then boarded at Haileybury UK and participated fully in the life of the school, not only academically and socially, but he also gained more performance experience as a young organist at Haileybury UK, Cambridge University and in London itself.
As we are about to establish our third pipe organ at our Keysborough campus, we are delighted to be able to provide these life-changing experiences for our young Haileyburians — all made possible by the support of our staff and parents and by the ‘king of instruments’, a truly global instrument with friends in every city from London to Melbourne!

Last Monday evening, the spotlight shone on the talents of Haileybury’s visual arts students at the Encore of Excellence event in Aikman Hall. Inspired by the VCAA Season of Excellence Series, which celebrates excellence in various art forms. This event showcased the outstanding work produced by our Visual Arts students during 2023.
We were delighted to welcome back students from Media, Product Design Technology, Art Making and Exhibiting, and Visual Communication and Design. During the event, they passionately discussed their work, shared insights into their creative journey, and undoubtedly inspired future students.
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Terence (Year 12) has been selected to showcase his remarkable talent at the prestigious TOPshots Exhibition. This exhibition features the best photography from VCE Art students across Victoria studying Art Making and Exhibiting or Art Creative Practice. It serves as a recognition for outstanding young artists, and Terence has rightfully earned his place among this elite group.
The exhibition runs from 27 March – 18 April at the Museum of Australian Photography in Wheelers Hill.
We would like to congratulate Terence on his selection for the TopShots Photography Exhibition. It is a testament to his hard work and dedication, and we are proud of his incredible achievement.

The Haileybury Pipes & Drums program kicked off 2024 with a productive camp at Camp Oasis in January. For the second year in a row, the Haileybury program proudly fields three bands, each poised to make their mark in the upcoming contest season. Our students, unwavering in their commitment, spent the holiday break honing their talents, aiming to perfect their new material scheduled for debut at the first contest of the year on 2 March in Ballarat.
The camp was a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, who are determined to defend their state and national titles. The serene environment of Camp Oasis offered the perfect backdrop for focused rehearsals, allowing students to refine their performances and build camaraderie.
As the contest season approaches, the anticipation within the Haileybury community is palpable. The bands are not just preparing to compete; they are setting the stage for a season of exceptional musical showcases. With their sights set on victory, the Haileybury Pipes & Drums are ready to put their hard-earned preparation to the test. The journey to Ballarat marks only the initial step, as it is followed by the prestigious Croydon (Victorian Championships), and Maryborough (Australian Championships) competitions shortly thereafter.

The school year has started with gusto, and we have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities to welcome families into our School across the first few weeks. Community matters at Castlefield and I am so grateful to our parents for engaging in coffee mornings, information sessions, and social gatherings that have been on offer to date.
Our students have approached the year with a sense of purpose and have settled seamlessly into the routines, expectations, learning and fun that has taken place across the first few weeks. Our Culture of Connectedness has seen students spend time meeting new peers, making friends and getting to know the teachers.
Our students being ready, prepared, engaged and reflective are the cornerstones of our Culture of Learning and we continue throughout the year to support and educate the students in how to be the most successful learners they can be.
Student leaders in both the Junior School and Middle School have been inducted at respective assemblies. We look forward to seeing what these impressive young leaders will contribute to our school this year. The Middle School Captains, Tilly (Year 8) and Levi (Year 8), addressed the Middle School with outstanding presence, inclusivity and vision for 2024.
Parking around the property is, at times, a difficulty. Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our Haileybury community. Parents leaving via the South Road exit, please take care when turning onto South Road, particularly as the pedestrian crossing is so close to the exit.
Remember that all exits from the School to Villeroy and Rouen Streets close at 6.00 pm nightly. Access is via South Road for evening functions.
There is no drop-off/pick up zone in Rouen Street, with parking restrictions in place along one side, at the busy school-start and end times.
There are clearly signposted two-minute parking spaces outside our Villeroy Street gate, and this is to be used as a ‘kiss and go’ zone rather than disembarking from your car. Cars should not be left unattended.
Families are encouraged to use the South Road entrance as the preferred drop-off and pick up location.
Please be considerate of the residents in the streets surrounding our School.
Welcome to a new year of endless possibilities and joyful beginnings. The ELC is a hive of activity as we focus on building relationships, exploring learning environments, and supporting everybody to feel connected, safe and build a sense of belonging.
Consistency and collaboration are the key as students and families find new ways of being and doing. We look forward to working together to nurture the growth and development of every child and create the many joyful moments early childhood brings.
There are several children in the centre with food allergies and life-threatening anaphylaxis. We ask that you please be mindful of the foods packed for morning tea and lunch. If you are in doubt, or have any queries, please speak with your class educators. It is important that we are aware of any potential risks for effective management. We appreciate your assistance with this important matter.
We have some golden rules around being a SunSmart Superhero. The students are doing a great job wearing hats, keeping hydrated and hunting for shady play spaces when outside. The expectation is that all students arrive with sunscreen already applied. Please make this part of your morning ritual and use the sunscreen stations around the service before your child begins their day with us.
What a delight it was to see our new Prep children come into school on their very first day. Bags knocking the back of their knees and brand-new hats on their heads! Our Preps commenced with a full week for their first week, and despite a little tiredness, they adapted quickly to the routines and expectations of their classrooms and teachers. We can’t wait to watch them grow!
At the other end of the Junior School are our Year 4 students. They have waited to be leaders and it is finally their turn. House leaders were inducted in a beautiful assembly, run by Miss Rowell, which was full of tradition and House spirit. Our House leaders attend weekly meetings with Mr Lucas, run recess and lunchtime clubs for all the students in the Junior School and help manage whole school events.
If your child’s hair can be tied back, it must be tied back. This applies to all students.
No nail polish or loose jewellery (small religious necklaces, stud or sleeper earrings are allowed).
Haileybury sunhats are worn during any outdoor activity in Terms 1 and 4; ‘No hat, no play’.
PE uniforms are worn on the two days that your child’s class is timetabled for PE.
Water bottles are to be brought to school each day.
Sunscreen should be applied at home each morning and then a small personal roll on popped in your child’s bag so they can reapply throughout the day if required.
We welcome all current and existing families to Middle School at Haileybury Castlefield for 2024. We have hit the ground running, and it has been lovely to see our thriving community back on our school grounds. During Week 1, it was a highlight to see many familiar and new faces at our Parent Information Evening and our Summer Drinks. Community matters to us here at Castlefield, and it has been wonderful to cross paths with many as we begin another exciting and fulfilling year.
Our students have made an exceptional start to their term and have seamlessly adopted their routines, beginning with arriving before Homeroom begins. It is vital that our students start the day on time, as this is a springboard into setting themselves up for a successful day. Our Homeroom teachers are a constant feature who work with our students every morning to create strong routines and connections for the day ahead.
As the term progresses, resilience, academic endurance and commitment are crucial attributes for our students as they continue to thrive and stay on top of their requirements. Here at Castlefield, there are many avenues of support, and as we work with your children, alongside you, encourage them to speak to teachers for support as they navigate the challenges of a bustling term.
Our Year 5 students embraced their first Middle School camp experience at Phillip Island. The excited students had fun trying their hand at surfing, the flying fox, giant swing and many other great opportunities to step outside of their comfort zone, make new friends and create memories. It was a special event for their second week at school.

Each February, we proudly acknowledge the wonderful character and contribution of the founders of Haileybury. City campus celebrated this annual event by being Learners for Life through a focus on history in our Middle School and Junior School Assemblies.
Russell Davidson, Director of Development and Alumni Relations and an Old Haileyburian, entertained us with stories about his days at Haileybury. He talked about chalk boards and life before laptops! His most important messages were, “Once a Haileyburian, always a Haileyburian,” and secondly, to work hard and follow your dreams, which inspired all our students.
Catherine MacNamara and Brent Ritchie shared the School’s history from 1892 to 2023 and our Middle School captains explained how our goals help us to aspire to develop strength of character and to be the author of our own story. Jacqueline Spanos wrote a poem about Haileybury’s history, which was illustrated and performed by Year 1.
As Head of Campus, I shared the very proud history of City campus and acknowledged the enormous contribution and commitment by past Haileybury Council Chairman Tom Poulton and CEO | Principal Derek Scott. We then enjoyed a Caramello koala to remember the importance of growing kind hearts and sharp minds — something all our founders have demonstrated through the past 132 years. Happy Founders Day to Haileybury!
We have started the new year with smiling faces, new friends and a sense of belonging within the ELC. The principle of ‘belonging’ within our Early Years Framework is of huge importance, as children ease into a new year and new routines.
As Reception children settle into their learning environment, morning routines have provided opportunities for them to develop their skills in independence. Children have shown great pride when carrying their own school bag and placing these into their locker each morning. Family photos on each locker and located throughout the room provide a sense of connection and belonging for children.
Pre-Preps have welcomed back old friends and met some new friends. Our Pre-Prep children continue to develop a sense of belonging as they learn more about their peers, establish and strengthen new and existing friendships, and engage with the environment around them.
We invite all parents to attend the upcoming Social Thinking Informative Session with Julie Liptak on Friday, 23 February. The session will introduce elements of our Social Thinking framework and language to children through group time. Please look for more information via the myHaileybury app.
The Prep to Year 4 students at Haileybury City kicked off the academic year with incredible energy and enthusiasm, setting the tone for a promising learning journey. In their approach to the first day and beyond, they have demonstrated a commendable commitment to their sustrained classroom learning behavious and new routines, and have embraced new classmates and teachers with great zeal. Our School's Respectful Relationships Pillars have also been emulated in all parts of Junior School life, as we CARE, LEARN and PLAY together.
With a new year comes many opportunities to engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities before and after school. For City students, our clubs sprawl throughout our vertical building, allowing all to explore diverse interests, foster teamwork, and develop valuable skills beyond the classroom, contributing to a well-rounded and enriching educational journey. In Term 1, Junior School students are required to wear their full summer uniform to and from school, including their school hat. They must also bring their Haileybury sun hat and water bottle each day. Please ensure your child applies sunscreen before school when the UV level is 3 and above. Now is a good time to try to introduce new routines that see students packing their own lunchboxes and school bags and setting out their uniforms for the next day. It is important that they take ownership of this process to feel excited and at ease.
We are thrilled to announce the upcoming visit of esteemed speech pathologist, Julie Liptak, to Haileybury City, where she will facilitate a transformative emotional regulation incursion for our Year 1 and Year 3 students. This invaluable opportunity aims to guide our students in developing a greater understanding of emotional regulation, offering essential strategies for utilising the Zones of Regulation. This initiative stands as a cornerstone of our Wellbeing Program, emphasising the value it adds to our students’ holistic growth and emotional intelligence.
As we reflect on the first weeks of the school year, it is evident that our students have laid a solid foundation for a successful year ahead. It has been wonderful to witness students forming new connections with both their peers and teachers.
During the Induction Days, our students familiarised themselves with Haileybury platforms, navigated the digital sphere, understood their school goals, and collaborated on their Homeroom mission statements. Welcoming back familiar faces and extending a warm greeting to new members has truly made for an excellent start to the 2024 school year.
Every year in our Middle Schools, we collectively work towards both BMS and GMS goals.
In the BMS, staff and students are focused on the theme of Strength of Character. Throughout the year, BMS students will unpack what it means to have strength of character, encompassing Haileybury’s Respectful Relationships pillars of empathy, respect, kindness, trust and honesty, and a commitment to being their best selves. It also acknowledges that strength of character means having a positive impact on others and the world around them.
For the GMS, the focus is You Are the Author of Your Own Story. Students will explore autonomy, self-determination, and responsibility for the decisions and actions that shape their journey. They will be encouraged to investigate what it means to embrace opportunities throughout their Middle School journey while developing skills such as resilience, exercising gratitude, and being active members of the community.
Year 8 students participated in an innovative incursion called The Showcase. This provided students with the opportunity to work in teams, creating digital content related to themes matching their stage of development within the Thrive curriculum: leadership, communication and technology. The day aimed to engage students in a relevant and growing sector of the digital economy. Students thoroughly enjoyed presenting their ideas to their peers.

Thank you all for making our new families feel welcome. From friendly smiles and introductions to playdates and picnics, all acts of kindness help strengthen our Haileybury community.
It was lovely to see so many parents connecting at the recent information sessions and at the Welcome Morning Tea. It was a beautiful morning, with a chance to connect with parents and enjoy a cuppa before starting our busy day.
Our key HPF City community building event this term is the HPF City Rooftop Party on Friday 15 March, 6.30 pm to – 8.30 pm. The invitation will be sent via the myHaileybury app. It is always a lovely evening under the stars, with great city views, a delicious dinner and a chance to get to know other City parents. Do not forget to make a note in your diary!
Finally, thank you to the parent volunteers who run our very popular Second-hand Uniform Shop. After a very successful 2023, the pop-up shop will be back on Thursday, 21 and Friday, 22 March. More details are available on the myHaileybury app. Together we are saving families money, reducing waste and raising funds for the School.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 2023 Year 12 Berwick students on their remarkable results. We are incredibly proud of your achievements, and we wish you all the very best for your future endeavours.
There are many upcoming social events this term that I encourage everyone to attend. These include morning teas at drop-off time, class dinners, the ELC Family morning, the Junior School Family morning, and the HPFE Trivia evening. These community events are an excellent opportunity to come together, build relationships, and enjoy each other’s company.
Girls Night In last Friday evening was a huge success! We had girls learning Hip Hop dance moves, decorating (and eating!) cupcakes, playing party games, getting their hair sprayed and capturing memories in the photobooth. But most importantly, we had 16 students and two teachers cut their hair for the World’s Greatest Shave.
Thank you to all who donated to this fantastic cause — we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Edrington community. With your help, we managed to surpass last year’s total of $11,200, raising just over $16,000! We look forward to presenting the Leukemia Foundation with these funds.
We extend a warm welcome to all our ELC families, both new and returning. What an exciting time ahead for all. This year is sure to be a year of great learning, fun and many wonderful relationships developing, which will promote opportunities for connection to our great community.
It has been so fulfilling to see how well the children have settled into their Reception and Pre-Prep classes, mainly due to educators and families working in collaboration. Forming a strong partnership between educators, children and the family helps to establish an understanding about expectations and attitudes and provides a foundation for building on the knowledge of all parties. The first few weeks are such a crucial time, and we want to ensure it is a positive one for all. This is why staff will spend this time with a focus on observing and getting to know each child, to build positive relationships with each child and family.

Since last Insight edition there have been many wonderful celebrations here at Newlands. The Middle School and Junior School student leadership assemblies took place in Aikman Hall. Congratulations to all student leaders taking on various leadership roles this term.
The Haileybury Parents and Friends Keysborough (HPFK) group held several events, with our Early Learning Centre, Prep and Year 1 ‘play and stay’ BBQ being a highlight, taking place in the Junior School playground. Thank you to all parents who came and supported, particularly those parents who assisted. Be sure to look out for future HPFK events and I look forward to seeing you there.
A reminder for the safety of our students, staff and families it is imperative that our parents drive safely and courteously to and from Newlands and within the School grounds.
It has come to the School’s attention that there has been speeding and dangerous driving within the School grounds and whilst exiting the School, in particular at Gate 7, Scotch Avenue.
In next month's Insight, we will discuss our approach to smart watches and their use at School.
On Friday, 8 March Newlands will be hosting a sausage sizzle to raise funds for The Biggest Playdate. The Biggest Playdate will be held on Sunday, 17 March at Aspendale Gardens Community Centre and will be a fun-filled carnival day for families to enjoy, with rides, performers, activities and food!
All proceeds go directly to the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre, we hope to see you there for a great time supporting a great cause.
As part of our Mandarin program, the children in Pre-Prep have enjoyed being immersed in Lunar New Year celebrations.
As part of the festivities, children were introduced to the story of Monster Nian and the 12 Zodiac animals. Music and movement have been a focus with Pre-Preps engaging in both the fan dance (shan zi wu) and handkerchief dance (shou juan wu), as well as exploring the lion and dragon dance with traditional Chinese musical instruments. To round out the celebrations, children made traditional Chinese dumplings and explored writing with the traditional Chinese brush (mao bi) to trace the characters 福（fu）or 春（chun).

A sense of belonging is fostered by the connections that children make with each other, their Educators and the environment around them.
As the children in Reception have started forming connections with their peers, they have also been exploring their own sense of identity. Through the use of mirrors and discussion, children have been encouraged to look purposefully at their features, and the lines and shapes they can identify to create self-portraits.
This has prompted conversations around our similarities and our differences, which will continue to be explored throughout the term.
Junior School will be buzzing with excitement as very important guests are set to visit for Grandparents and Special Friends Day on Friday, 1 March.
Grandparents and Special Friends will gather for morning tea before heading to Berthon Hall to witness the year level choirs performing a variety of songs they have been learning in class.
The Year 2 Strings and Years 3 and 4 Scrolls students will also offer a sneak peek of the musical numbers they have been mastering on their instruments.
The VIP guests will then proceed to classrooms, engaging in various activities with students, including creating family puzzle pieces, playing games and conducting interviews.
Year 6 students are jetting off to tour Canberra!
Monday, 19 February to Friday, 23 February the boys take on Canberra followed by the girls from Monday, 26 February to Friday, 1 March. They will be immersed in a variety of hands-on activities, guided tours and education programs, including:
Students will be accommodated close to the centre of Canberra.
Our budding Year 8 geographers will be heading off to complete a fieldwork study on the Mornington Peninsula in Term 1.
Moving between Sorrento and Rye, students will have the opportunity to explore the coastline to identify ways in which natural processes such as erosion and deposition have influenced the coast.
They will be able to apply their knowledge of coastal management strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of current solutions first-hand through an inquiry task.

Nearly 60 members of the Class of 1984 excitedly gathered in early February for their 40 Years-On Reunion at The Deck in Brighton. There was laughter, delicious food, and nostalgia as friends reminisced about the good old days. A massive shout-out to everyone involved for making it an unforgettable night! Thanks also to those members who attended and were honoured on stage at the Founders Day Assembly on Tuesday, 6 February.
For the first time in the OHA’s history, Professor Rod Hicks AM and Mr John Gollings AM were declared joint winners of the prestigious OHA Medal at this year’s Founders Day Assembly. This is the OHA’s highest honour in recognition and appreciation of exceptional achievement to the community beyond expectation in their field of endeavour. Haileybury Pangea’s Term 1 Launch Day, held online on Monday, 29 January marked a vibrant start to the academic year. Head of House, Natasha Eshuis, and Head of Middle School, Mathew Shill, spearheaded insightful sessions aimed at equipping students with strategies for a successful year ahead. From goal setting to time management, students received invaluable guidance to navigate their academic journey effectively.
In fostering a sense of community, our tutors facilitated engaging activities that encouraged students to connect and forge bonds with their peers. Through collaborative challenges and icebreakers, both new and continuing students immersed themselves in an atmosphere of camaraderie, laying the foundation for a supportive learning environment.
The seamless integration of new students into the existing community was a standout feature of the Launch Day. It has been wonderful to see our continuing students welcome and support those new to the campus. We thank our staff, students and Year 12 Captains for making it a brilliant start to what promises to be an action-packed year.
Haileybury Pangea’s Year 12 Leadership Day on Tuesday, 6 February, marked an inspiring milestone in the journey of our senior students. Engaging in a series of workshops and insightful discussions, the Year 12 cohort delved into the core values essential to effective leadership.
Under the guidance of Head of House Natasha Eshuis and Damien Meunier, Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, students explored the concept of social justice. They contemplated its significance within the context of Haileybury and deliberated on actionable strategies to embody these values in their roles as leaders. Our School Captains Madeline (Year 12) and Sean (Year 12) led students in developing ideas for social justice causes as a united cohort.
The event also featured guest presenters who shared their perspectives and experiences in leadership in the business world, enriching the discourse on leadership and its various facets. From fostering inclusivity to promoting empathy and integrity, students gained invaluable insights into the multifaceted nature of leadership and the responsibilities it entails.
A highlight of the day was Haileybury’s Founders Day Assembly, which was attended by our Year 12 Captains in person at Haileybury’s Keysborough campus, and broadcast online to all Haileybury Pangea students. We were so proud to see our campus represented at this significant occasion, and we look forward to seeing our Year 12 cohort lead exciting initiatives this year.

I would like to thank the students and academic staff of Senior School who have transitioned back into school life seamlessly and effectively over the past week. One of the biggest advantages of Haileybury’s Term 1A program is that the settling in period which accompanies any new school year is completed in November of the previous year. This allows our students and teachers to begin productive work from day one of the new school year. There have been very few changes of teachers outside those necessary to replace staff who have left the School or transferred to other campuses. I must also add a particular welcome to those students and families who have started within our Senior Schools. I hope you feel that you are part of the Haileybury community already and I look forward to meeting many of you at School functions in the coming months.
Top Class is an annual concert series coordinated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) showcasing outstanding performances by VCE and VCE VET students from schools across the state.
Congratulations to Emma (Year 12) and Teleetha (Year 12), who have been selected to perform their VCE Dance solos at Top Class Dance 2024 at Melbourne Recital Centre in March 2024.
This year, 109 top performing students were invited to audition for Top Class Dance, and only 31 students were selected to perform. Selected performers exemplify the skill and creativity that can be achieved within the VCE curriculum.

Our Founders’ Day Assembly was a wonderful occasion and a great way to enable current Haileyburians to reflect on how the School has become the large and diverse institution that it is today. The 2023 Founders’ Day Assembly featured our School Captains and Vice Captains delivering a range of information about the different generations of Haileybury founders and the things they did to contribute to the School’s growth throughout the years.

Here in Melbourne, Haileybury recently had the pleasure of hosting the Year 12 student leaders from our Haileybury Rendall School, Darwin , marking another enriching chapter in our ongoing inter-school collaboration. Accompanied by Head of Senior School, Kylie Mobilia, the fourteen students embarked on a memorable journey that was, for some, their first venture outside of the Northern Territory.
Commencing their Melbourne experience at the City campus, our student leaders then ventured to the Berwick or Keysborough campuses, fostering connections with their peers. The itinerary was packed with engaging academic sessions, attendance at the Founders’ Day assembly, and active participation in invigorating sports training. Notably, they engaged in a thoughtful dialogue with CEO | Principal Derek Scott in addition to our own local Haileybury leaders, where they shared their visionary ideas on enhancing connections between the two schools.
In the short yet impactful duration of their stay, meaningful connections were forged among the students, laying the groundwork for continued collaboration throughout their final academic year. We extend heartfelt gratitude to the families who graciously opened their homes to these students, contributing to the warmth and hospitality that define the Haileybury community spirit.
This visit not only enriched the academic and co-curricular experiences of our student leaders but also exemplified the unity and camaraderie that define the Haileybury family.
For over 25 years we have partnered with our sister school in Japan — Nihon University High School — which sees our VCE Japanese students travel to Sapporo in Japan to participate in an intensive study excursion, with a group of Nihon University High School students coming to us as part of the reciprocal program.
This week, we welcomed 83 Japanese students, 30 of whom are staying with Haileybury students and their families to experience life in an Australian school and homestay.
They have attended classes with their homestay brothers and sisters and will be attending School sport to experience the Australian APS competition across a range of different sports.
We are thrilled to welcome our Japanese students back to Haileybury and look forward to continuing this strong relationship.
Tuesday, 13 February saw many 2023 graduates return to Haileybury to take part in the annual Honours Assembly held to celebrate the academic achievements of the Class of 2023.
Haileybury’s VCE successes are so exceptional that we no longer have room in Aikman Hall to hold both Haileybury College and Haileybury Girls College at the same time. At each assembly, a range of students from Year 10, 11 and 12 were presented with awards for exemplary achievement in individual subjects before we moved to announce the names of those graduates who had been placed on the Scholars and Honours boards (those who received a 95+ ATAR).
The assemblies concluded with the school applauding the achievements of the Duces of Haileybury College, Stanley Chi and Sam Nielsen, both achieving an ATAR of 99.95 and our Dux of Haileybury Girls College Abigail Lang who achieved a 99.75, as reflection of their hard work and effort.

Parents, carers, schools and community all play an important role in protecting children and young people from, and educating them about, the harmful effects of smoking and vaping.
Research from the Royal Children’s Hospital shows many parents and carers are not aware of the harmful effects or how their views about smoking and vaping can impact the likelihood of a young person taking up smoking or vaping.
The Department of Education and Training has developed resources to help you learn more about the health risks of smoking and vaping, and some suggestions about how to talk to children and young people about vaping, and where to get support. To access the resources, please use this link.

Congratulations to Inakshi (Year 11) and the U16 Vic Metro cricket team who were victorious at the recent National Championships in Hobart. Undefeated going into the grand final, they defeated NSW with overs and wickets in hand. Inakshi is also our Vice Captain of Tennis and has been a member of the blazer squad since Year 9 — a wonderful ambassador for girls’ sport.
Meg (Year 11) has made the Victorian U18 Country Women’s Basketball Team.
Kate (Year 12) has been selected to the U19 Victorian State Netball Team. Kate has been working hard through the Netball Victoria Development pathways program over the past few years and has now been rewarded with a position on the team. We are so very proud of you, Kate, and wish you all the best at Nationals in April.
Congratulations also to Ella (Year 12) who was a member of the U18 Victorian Indoor Hockey Team that competed in Canberra in January. The Vics finished 3rd overall, winning 4 of their 6 matches.
Congratulations to Emily (Year 10), 1st Touch team member who has made the Victorian U20 Touch team. Emily actually played in the U16 Team last September and then over the holiday break has been promoted to the U20 State Team. Emily will head to Queensland in March for the National Championships.

Haileybury is a not-for-profit charitable entity. The School is fortunate to be governed by an outstanding skills-based council. Council members are committed to Haileybury delivering great education outcomes and receive no remuneration or other reward for their time, expertise and effort in contributing to the School.
In 2024 Haileybury has a new Chair with Professor Gregory Whitwell taking over from long-time Chair Tom Poulton who led the School through a period of great success for Haileybury students and considerable growth for the School.
A graduate of Haileybury, Professor Whitwell has had a long career in leadership at some of Australia’s most pre-eminent universities. He retired at the end of 2022 from the position of Dean of the University of Sydney Business School. Professor Whitwell has a lifelong commitment to the transformative power of education.

Haileybury is redefining our co-curricular program with a view to implement phased changes from 2025 for Senior School students (Years 9–12).
Our goal is to design a program that enables our students to have greater choice in how they engage in the broad range of co-curricular offerings, including Haileybury Sport. This comes as an acknowledgement of the responsibility our Senior School students are ready for in choosing how they spend their valuable time.
For 2025, one option Haileybury is considering is enabling our Senior School students to choose whether they participate in one, two or three seasons of Haileybury Sport. Currently our program requires them to participate in a minimum of two seasons. Haileybury believes that physical activity is an important part of an excellent educational program and offers numerous physical, social and emotional health benefits. For this reason, we will continue to provide our Senior School students with the option to participate in sport all year round if they choose to. Conversely, we are excited about the idea of facilitating further choice for our students who choose to only participate in one or two seasons of Haileybury Sport by providing options that support their wide and diverse range of passions and interests through our co-curricular program.
To inform the program model, our 2025 Senior School cohort will be asked to participate in a brief survey. Their voices will be instrumental in shaping how Haileybury delivers co-curricular programs from 2025 and beyond.

Haileybury’s review of the sport and co-curricular program is taking place concurrently with a review of APS sport — of which Haileybury is a member.
The parameters of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) review are outlined in a statement from the APS Principals and Heads.
The APS sporting program has been a key feature of the Victorian sporting landscape for well over 100 years.
A key aim of the APS Sport program is to be responsive to the changing needs of students, while respecting our heritage. In recent years, it has become clear to the APS Principals that our existing offerings do not necessarily address the needs and wants of all our students, particularly regarding extra/co-curricular activities. In addition, the operational challenges of the existing APS Sport program are growing, as the scale of the APS student cohort increases.
As such, the APS Principals have unanimously agreed to conduct a strategic 2024 review of the APS Sport program. A copy of the strategic review’s scope is linked here.

Term 1 is underway, and the start of the new school year brings with it all kinds of exciting possibilities. It can also be a time of uncertainty though, as students settle into a new grade, new routines, new subjects and classroom structures, or a new school entirely.
These sorts of changes can be a source of stress and anxiety for many young people, particularly if they are already feeling some pressures from outside their learning environment. In knowing what signs to look out for, though, we can all provide students with safe opportunities to share their stress and uncertainties, navigate the new and embrace change as a positive thing.
Every young person is unique — and so too are the reasons they might be feeling more stress and anxiety at the start of the new school year. For many this stress stems from a fear of the unknown. After having spent the past year building a sense of belonging in their previous learning environment, a new year means having to reset this sense of security — and adapt to new routines, new subjects, new teaching styles and, possibly, new fellow students.
As students make their way through the school levels, they might feel more academic pressure — such as when they are making the transition from primary to secondary school. Reflecting on new expectations from teachers, parents and their own standards can make the prospect of another year feel like an obstacle, instead of an exciting opportunity.
A potential shift in their classmates or friendships could also see an increase in anxiety. Your children might be anxious about not having their friends in their class, or the need to make new friends entirely.
While no two students are likely to have the exact same response to stress and anxiety, there are certain signs to look out for. On a physical level, fidgeting and an inability to sit still, biting fingernails or choosing to isolate themselves in their room could suggest your child is feeling uneasy about this time of the year.
You might also notice them having strong emotional reactions, such as easily getting angry or upset. Changes in their sleeping and eating habits can also be a sign of stress and anxiety — as is repeatedly asking questions or commenting on settling into the school year. These shifts suggest feelings of upheaval and uncertainty kicking in.
There are several ways you can support your child or children through any anxiety they are feeling about change — with open communication being key to this support.

To help with this, try to create a ‘be there’ environment where your child feels comfortable to talk through how they are feeling and raise any questions or concerns they might have with you. Remember that children do not have the same perspective as adults just yet, so it is important not to downplay their worries.
Creating this sort of open, compassionate environment then gives you a platform to reframe change and how to respond to it. Some of the ways you might choose to do this could be:
Ultimately, connecting your child with the right support can help them feel safe and confident to navigate change. Encourage them to connect with buddies or mentors at school, such as teachers, Heads of House or the School Nurses and Psychologists — or reach out to family members, or a sports coach they feel comfortable with.
The beginning of a new school year can be tough for young people for all kinds of reasons, but they do not have to worry on their own. By recognising why Term 1 can bring feelings of stress and anxiety and knowing what signs to look out for, we can all provide young people with a safe, supportive environment to see change as a positive, so that they embrace the entire school year with confidence, curiosity and optimism.
Top Class is an annual concert series coordinated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) showcasing outstanding performances by VCE and VCE VET students from schools across the state.
Congratulations to the impressive amount of VCE Dance, Drama and Theatre Studies students invited to present their work for the 2024 Top Class season.
35% of the cohort were invited to present their outstanding dance solos, drama performances or monologue interpretations for the VCAA.
We also had many students selected to perform at the Season of Excellence, including Emma (Year 12), Manal (OH 2023), Genevieve (OH 2023), and Teleetha (Year 12).
This places these students’ dance and drama cohort in the top 5% of the state, an impressive result for Dance, Drama and Theatre Studies.

Senior School City play – Stories in the Dark
Presented at Iconic Melbourne theatre venue, Chapel off Chapel, Stories in the Dark explores the power of storytelling, mingling the magic and earthy wisdom of folk tales with the hard-edged story of violence, conflict and the struggle to survive.
Theatre Studies play – The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon
This student led production is designed, directed, conceptualised and coordinated by the 2024, Unit 3 Theatre Studies students. The play, a farcical one-act comedy is designed to delight and amuse as you learn the muddled-up version of 209 Grimm brothers stories.

Being a participant in music making is a truly special experience. It is a form of self-expression that allows individuals to connect with their creativity, and with others in a deeply collaboratively way.
The pathway to creating high quality music is a journey that requires dedication, patience, and flair. The result of prolonged creative and technical growth is always worth it when a performance comes to life and is shared with an appreciative audience.
Last Monday night the Performing Arts and Visual Arts were celebrated at Haileybury’s Encore of Excellence event held in Aikman Hall. Drawing from the concept of the VCAA Season of Excellence Series, which recognises the most outstanding work from Dance, Drama, Music and the Visual Arts, Encore of Excellence showcased some of the very best work presented by our Visual and Performing Arts students in last year’s 2023 VCE examination period.
A large highly appreciative audience, were dazzled by the diversity of skill and talent that was on display for the 90-minute experience.
The Arts has the power to move us, to make us feel, to evoke memories and to connect us with one another. Being an active participant in the Arts is a way to harness that power, to bring those feelings and experiences to life, and to share them with others. Speaking for the teachers, as educators we are indeed fortunate to have front row seats to see these amazing talents emerge right before our eyes and ears.
Since the Haileybury Pipe Organ Scholars Program was established back in 2010 to celebrate what was then 50 years of organ music at Haileybury (now 64 years of organ music), many of our organ scholars have gained invaluable life experience and cultural awareness travelling overseas as part of the program.
Haileybury organ scholars have visited, stayed and performed at British educational institutions ranging from Eton College to Oundle School and Cambridge University and, recently, we established an exchange program with Haileybury UK.
Last December, Joshua (Year 12) — Boys’ Senior Organ Scholar — travelled to London where he was met by Dr Stephan Muller, Deputy Principal (Education Research & Int'l.). Exploring London, Joshua reached a step count of 45,000 steps over just two days!
Joshua then boarded at Haileybury UK and participated fully in the life of the school, not only academically and socially, but he also gained more performance experience as a young organist at Haileybury UK, Cambridge University and in London itself.
As we are about to establish our third pipe organ at our Keysborough campus, we are delighted to be able to provide these life-changing experiences for our young Haileyburians — all made possible by the support of our staff and parents and by the ‘king of instruments’, a truly global instrument with friends in every city from London to Melbourne!

Last Monday evening, the spotlight shone on the talents of Haileybury’s visual arts students at the Encore of Excellence event in Aikman Hall. Inspired by the VCAA Season of Excellence Series, which celebrates excellence in various art forms. This event showcased the outstanding work produced by our Visual Arts students during 2023.
We were delighted to welcome back students from Media, Product Design Technology, Art Making and Exhibiting, and Visual Communication and Design. During the event, they passionately discussed their work, shared insights into their creative journey, and undoubtedly inspired future students.
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Terence (Year 12) has been selected to showcase his remarkable talent at the prestigious TOPshots Exhibition. This exhibition features the best photography from VCE Art students across Victoria studying Art Making and Exhibiting or Art Creative Practice. It serves as a recognition for outstanding young artists, and Terence has rightfully earned his place among this elite group.
The exhibition runs from 27 March – 18 April at the Museum of Australian Photography in Wheelers Hill.
We would like to congratulate Terence on his selection for the TopShots Photography Exhibition. It is a testament to his hard work and dedication, and we are proud of his incredible achievement.

The Haileybury Pipes & Drums program kicked off 2024 with a productive camp at Camp Oasis in January. For the second year in a row, the Haileybury program proudly fields three bands, each poised to make their mark in the upcoming contest season. Our students, unwavering in their commitment, spent the holiday break honing their talents, aiming to perfect their new material scheduled for debut at the first contest of the year on 2 March in Ballarat.
The camp was a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, who are determined to defend their state and national titles. The serene environment of Camp Oasis offered the perfect backdrop for focused rehearsals, allowing students to refine their performances and build camaraderie.
As the contest season approaches, the anticipation within the Haileybury community is palpable. The bands are not just preparing to compete; they are setting the stage for a season of exceptional musical showcases. With their sights set on victory, the Haileybury Pipes & Drums are ready to put their hard-earned preparation to the test. The journey to Ballarat marks only the initial step, as it is followed by the prestigious Croydon (Victorian Championships), and Maryborough (Australian Championships) competitions shortly thereafter.

The school year has started with gusto, and we have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities to welcome families into our School across the first few weeks. Community matters at Castlefield and I am so grateful to our parents for engaging in coffee mornings, information sessions, and social gatherings that have been on offer to date.
Our students have approached the year with a sense of purpose and have settled seamlessly into the routines, expectations, learning and fun that has taken place across the first few weeks. Our Culture of Connectedness has seen students spend time meeting new peers, making friends and getting to know the teachers.
Our students being ready, prepared, engaged and reflective are the cornerstones of our Culture of Learning and we continue throughout the year to support and educate the students in how to be the most successful learners they can be.
Student leaders in both the Junior School and Middle School have been inducted at respective assemblies. We look forward to seeing what these impressive young leaders will contribute to our school this year. The Middle School Captains, Tilly (Year 8) and Levi (Year 8), addressed the Middle School with outstanding presence, inclusivity and vision for 2024.
Parking around the property is, at times, a difficulty. Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our Haileybury community. Parents leaving via the South Road exit, please take care when turning onto South Road, particularly as the pedestrian crossing is so close to the exit.
Remember that all exits from the School to Villeroy and Rouen Streets close at 6.00 pm nightly. Access is via South Road for evening functions.
There is no drop-off/pick up zone in Rouen Street, with parking restrictions in place along one side, at the busy school-start and end times.
There are clearly signposted two-minute parking spaces outside our Villeroy Street gate, and this is to be used as a ‘kiss and go’ zone rather than disembarking from your car. Cars should not be left unattended.
Families are encouraged to use the South Road entrance as the preferred drop-off and pick up location.
Please be considerate of the residents in the streets surrounding our School.
Welcome to a new year of endless possibilities and joyful beginnings. The ELC is a hive of activity as we focus on building relationships, exploring learning environments, and supporting everybody to feel connected, safe and build a sense of belonging.
Consistency and collaboration are the key as students and families find new ways of being and doing. We look forward to working together to nurture the growth and development of every child and create the many joyful moments early childhood brings.
There are several children in the centre with food allergies and life-threatening anaphylaxis. We ask that you please be mindful of the foods packed for morning tea and lunch. If you are in doubt, or have any queries, please speak with your class educators. It is important that we are aware of any potential risks for effective management. We appreciate your assistance with this important matter.
We have some golden rules around being a SunSmart Superhero. The students are doing a great job wearing hats, keeping hydrated and hunting for shady play spaces when outside. The expectation is that all students arrive with sunscreen already applied. Please make this part of your morning ritual and use the sunscreen stations around the service before your child begins their day with us.
What a delight it was to see our new Prep children come into school on their very first day. Bags knocking the back of their knees and brand-new hats on their heads! Our Preps commenced with a full week for their first week, and despite a little tiredness, they adapted quickly to the routines and expectations of their classrooms and teachers. We can’t wait to watch them grow!
At the other end of the Junior School are our Year 4 students. They have waited to be leaders and it is finally their turn. House leaders were inducted in a beautiful assembly, run by Miss Rowell, which was full of tradition and House spirit. Our House leaders attend weekly meetings with Mr Lucas, run recess and lunchtime clubs for all the students in the Junior School and help manage whole school events.
If your child’s hair can be tied back, it must be tied back. This applies to all students.
No nail polish or loose jewellery (small religious necklaces, stud or sleeper earrings are allowed).
Haileybury sunhats are worn during any outdoor activity in Terms 1 and 4; ‘No hat, no play’.
PE uniforms are worn on the two days that your child’s class is timetabled for PE.
Water bottles are to be brought to school each day.
Sunscreen should be applied at home each morning and then a small personal roll on popped in your child’s bag so they can reapply throughout the day if required.
We welcome all current and existing families to Middle School at Haileybury Castlefield for 2024. We have hit the ground running, and it has been lovely to see our thriving community back on our school grounds. During Week 1, it was a highlight to see many familiar and new faces at our Parent Information Evening and our Summer Drinks. Community matters to us here at Castlefield, and it has been wonderful to cross paths with many as we begin another exciting and fulfilling year.
Our students have made an exceptional start to their term and have seamlessly adopted their routines, beginning with arriving before Homeroom begins. It is vital that our students start the day on time, as this is a springboard into setting themselves up for a successful day. Our Homeroom teachers are a constant feature who work with our students every morning to create strong routines and connections for the day ahead.
As the term progresses, resilience, academic endurance and commitment are crucial attributes for our students as they continue to thrive and stay on top of their requirements. Here at Castlefield, there are many avenues of support, and as we work with your children, alongside you, encourage them to speak to teachers for support as they navigate the challenges of a bustling term.
Our Year 5 students embraced their first Middle School camp experience at Phillip Island. The excited students had fun trying their hand at surfing, the flying fox, giant swing and many other great opportunities to step outside of their comfort zone, make new friends and create memories. It was a special event for their second week at school.

Each February, we proudly acknowledge the wonderful character and contribution of the founders of Haileybury. City campus celebrated this annual event by being Learners for Life through a focus on history in our Middle School and Junior School Assemblies.
Russell Davidson, Director of Development and Alumni Relations and an Old Haileyburian, entertained us with stories about his days at Haileybury. He talked about chalk boards and life before laptops! His most important messages were, “Once a Haileyburian, always a Haileyburian,” and secondly, to work hard and follow your dreams, which inspired all our students.
Catherine MacNamara and Brent Ritchie shared the School’s history from 1892 to 2023 and our Middle School captains explained how our goals help us to aspire to develop strength of character and to be the author of our own story. Jacqueline Spanos wrote a poem about Haileybury’s history, which was illustrated and performed by Year 1.
As Head of Campus, I shared the very proud history of City campus and acknowledged the enormous contribution and commitment by past Haileybury Council Chairman Tom Poulton and CEO | Principal Derek Scott. We then enjoyed a Caramello koala to remember the importance of growing kind hearts and sharp minds — something all our founders have demonstrated through the past 132 years. Happy Founders Day to Haileybury!
We have started the new year with smiling faces, new friends and a sense of belonging within the ELC. The principle of ‘belonging’ within our Early Years Framework is of huge importance, as children ease into a new year and new routines.
As Reception children settle into their learning environment, morning routines have provided opportunities for them to develop their skills in independence. Children have shown great pride when carrying their own school bag and placing these into their locker each morning. Family photos on each locker and located throughout the room provide a sense of connection and belonging for children.
Pre-Preps have welcomed back old friends and met some new friends. Our Pre-Prep children continue to develop a sense of belonging as they learn more about their peers, establish and strengthen new and existing friendships, and engage with the environment around them.
We invite all parents to attend the upcoming Social Thinking Informative Session with Julie Liptak on Friday, 23 February. The session will introduce elements of our Social Thinking framework and language to children through group time. Please look for more information via the myHaileybury app.
The Prep to Year 4 students at Haileybury City kicked off the academic year with incredible energy and enthusiasm, setting the tone for a promising learning journey. In their approach to the first day and beyond, they have demonstrated a commendable commitment to their sustrained classroom learning behavious and new routines, and have embraced new classmates and teachers with great zeal. Our School's Respectful Relationships Pillars have also been emulated in all parts of Junior School life, as we CARE, LEARN and PLAY together.

In Term 1, Junior School students are required to wear their full summer uniform to and from school, including their school hat. They must also bring their Haileybury sun hat and water bottle each day. Please ensure your child applies sunscreen before school when the UV level is 3 and above. Now is a good time to try to introduce new routines that see students packing their own lunchboxes and school bags and setting out their uniforms for the next day. It is important that they take ownership of this process to feel excited and at ease.
We are thrilled to announce the upcoming visit of esteemed speech pathologist, Julie Liptak, to Haileybury City, where she will facilitate a transformative emotional regulation incursion for our Year 1 and Year 3 students. This invaluable opportunity aims to guide our students in developing a greater understanding of emotional regulation, offering essential strategies for utilising the Zones of Regulation. This initiative stands as a cornerstone of our Wellbeing Program, emphasising the value it adds to our students’ holistic growth and emotional intelligence.
As we reflect on the first weeks of the school year, it is evident that our students have laid a solid foundation for a successful year ahead. It has been wonderful to witness students forming new connections with both their peers and teachers.
During the Induction Days, our students familiarised themselves with Haileybury platforms, navigated the digital sphere, understood their school goals, and collaborated on their Homeroom mission statements. Welcoming back familiar faces and extending a warm greeting to new members has truly made for an excellent start to the 2024 school year.
Every year in our Middle Schools, we collectively work towards both BMS and GMS goals.
In the BMS, staff and students are focused on the theme of Strength of Character. Throughout the year, BMS students will unpack what it means to have strength of character, encompassing Haileybury’s Respectful Relationships pillars of empathy, respect, kindness, trust and honesty, and a commitment to being their best selves. It also acknowledges that strength of character means having a positive impact on others and the world around them.
For the GMS, the focus is You Are the Author of Your Own Story. Students will explore autonomy, self-determination, and responsibility for the decisions and actions that shape their journey. They will be encouraged to investigate what it means to embrace opportunities throughout their Middle School journey while developing skills such as resilience, exercising gratitude, and being active members of the community.
Year 8 students participated in an innovative incursion called The Showcase. This provided students with the opportunity to work in teams, creating digital content related to themes matching their stage of development within the Thrive curriculum: leadership, communication and technology. The day aimed to engage students in a relevant and growing sector of the digital economy. Students thoroughly enjoyed presenting their ideas to their peers.

It was lovely to see so many parents connecting at the recent information sessions and at the Welcome Morning Tea. It was a beautiful morning, with a chance to connect with parents and enjoy a cuppa before starting our busy day.
Our key HPF City community building event this term is the HPF City Rooftop Party on Friday 15 March, 6.30 pm to – 8.30 pm. The invitation will be sent via the myHaileybury app. It is always a lovely evening under the stars, with great city views, a delicious dinner and a chance to get to know other City parents. Do not forget to make a note in your diary!
Finally, thank you to the parent volunteers who run our very popular Second-hand Uniform Shop. After a very successful 2023, the pop-up shop will be back on Thursday, 21 and Friday, 22 March. There are many upcoming social events this term that I encourage everyone to attend. These include morning teas at drop-off time, class dinners, the ELC Family morning, the Junior School Family morning, and the HPFE Trivia evening. These community events are an excellent opportunity to come together, build relationships, and enjoy each other’s company.
Girls Night In last Friday evening was a huge success! We had girls learning Hip Hop dance moves, decorating (and eating!) cupcakes, playing party games, getting their hair sprayed and capturing memories in the photobooth. But most importantly, we had 16 students and two teachers cut their hair for the World’s Greatest Shave.
Thank you to all who donated to this fantastic cause — we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Edrington community. With your help, we managed to surpass last year’s total of $11,200, raising just over $16,000! We look forward to presenting the Leukemia Foundation with these funds.
We extend a warm welcome to all our ELC families, both new and returning. What an exciting time ahead for all. This year is sure to be a year of great learning, fun and many wonderful relationships developing, which will promote opportunities for connection to our great community.
It has been so fulfilling to see how well the children have settled into their Reception and Pre-Prep classes, mainly due to educators and families working in collaboration. Forming a strong partnership between educators, children and the family helps to establish an understanding about expectations and attitudes and provides a foundation for building on the knowledge of all parties. The first few weeks are such a crucial time, and we want to ensure it is a positive one for all. This is why staff will spend this time with a focus on observing and getting to know each child, to build positive relationships with each child and family.

Led by our Girls Middle School Captain, Sathisha (Year 8) and our Boys Middle School Captain, Logan (Year 8), this group will be great ambassadors for our Middle School and will work closely with staff and students this year to contribute to the culture of our Middle School.

Since last Insight edition there have been many wonderful celebrations here at Newlands. The Middle School and Junior School student leadership assemblies took place in Aikman Hall. Congratulations to all student leaders taking on various leadership roles this term.
The Haileybury Parents and Friends Keysborough (HPFK) group held several events, with our Early Learning Centre, Prep and Year 1 ‘play and stay’ BBQ being a highlight, taking place in the Junior School playground. Thank you to all parents who came and supported, particularly those parents who assisted. Be sure to look out for future HPFK events and I look forward to seeing you there.
A reminder for the safety of our students, staff and families it is imperative that our parents drive safely and courteously to and from Newlands and within the School grounds.
It has come to the School’s attention that there has been speeding and dangerous driving within the School grounds and whilst exiting the School, in particular at Gate 7, Scotch Avenue.
In next month's Insight, we will discuss our approach to smart watches and their use at School.
On Friday, 8 March Newlands will be hosting a sausage sizzle to raise funds for The Biggest Playdate. The Biggest Playdate will be held on Sunday, 17 March at Aspendale Gardens Community Centre and will be a fun-filled carnival day for families to enjoy, with rides, performers, activities and food!
All proceeds go directly to the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre, we hope to see you there for a great time supporting a great cause.
As part of our Mandarin program, the children in Pre-Prep have enjoyed being immersed in Lunar New Year celebrations.
As part of the festivities, children were introduced to the story of Monster Nian and the 12 Zodiac animals. Music and movement have been a focus with Pre-Preps engaging in both the fan dance (shan zi wu) and handkerchief dance (shou juan wu), as well as exploring the lion and dragon dance with traditional Chinese musical instruments. To round out the celebrations, children made traditional Chinese dumplings and explored writing with the traditional Chinese brush (mao bi) to trace the characters 福（fu）or 春（chun).

A sense of belonging is fostered by the connections that children make with each other, their Educators and the environment around them.
As the children in Reception have started forming connections with their peers, they have also been exploring their own sense of identity. Through the use of mirrors and discussion, children have been encouraged to look purposefully at their features, and the lines and shapes they can identify to create self-portraits.
This has prompted conversations around our similarities and our differences, which will continue to be explored throughout the term.
Junior School will be buzzing with excitement as very important guests are set to visit for Grandparents and Special Friends Day on Friday, 1 March.
Grandparents and Special Friends will gather for morning tea before heading to Berthon Hall to witness the year level choirs performing a variety of songs they have been learning in class.
The Year 2 Strings and Years 3 and 4 Scrolls students will also offer a sneak peek of the musical numbers they have been mastering on their instruments.
The VIP guests will then proceed to classrooms, engaging in various activities with students, including creating family puzzle pieces, playing games and conducting interviews.
Year 6 students are jetting off to tour Canberra!
Monday, 19 February to Friday, 23 February the boys take on Canberra followed by the girls from Monday, 26 February to Friday, 1 March. They will be immersed in a variety of hands-on activities, guided tours and education programs, including:
Students will be accommodated close to the centre of Canberra.
Our budding Year 8 geographers will be heading off to complete a fieldwork study on the Mornington Peninsula in Term 1.
Moving between Sorrento and Rye, students will have the opportunity to explore the coastline to identify ways in which natural processes such as erosion and deposition have influenced the coast.
They will be able to apply their knowledge of coastal management strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of current solutions first-hand through an inquiry task.

Nearly 60 members of the Class of 1984 excitedly gathered in early February for their 40 Years-On Reunion at The Deck in Brighton. There was laughter, delicious food, and nostalgia as friends reminisced about the good old days. A massive shout-out to everyone involved for making it an unforgettable night! Thanks also to those members who attended and were honoured on stage at the Founders Day Assembly on Tuesday, 6 February.
For the first time in the OHA’s history, Professor Rod Hicks AM and Mr John Gollings AM were declared joint winners of the prestigious OHA Medal at this year’s Founders Day Assembly. This is the OHA’s highest honour in recognition and appreciation of exceptional achievement to the community beyond expectation in their field of endeavour. Haileybury Pangea’s Term 1 Launch Day, held online on Monday, 29 January marked a vibrant start to the academic year. Head of House, Natasha Eshuis, and Head of Middle School, Mathew Shill, spearheaded insightful sessions aimed at equipping students with strategies for a successful year ahead. From goal setting to time management, students received invaluable guidance to navigate their academic journey effectively.
In fostering a sense of community, our tutors facilitated engaging activities that encouraged students to connect and forge bonds with their peers. Through collaborative challenges and icebreakers, both new and continuing students immersed themselves in an atmosphere of camaraderie, laying the foundation for a supportive learning environment.
The seamless integration of new students into the existing community was a standout feature of the Launch Day. It has been wonderful to see our continuing students welcome and support those new to the campus. We thank our staff, students and Year 12 Captains for making it a brilliant start to what promises to be an action-packed year.
Haileybury Pangea’s Year 12 Leadership Day on Tuesday, 6 February, marked an inspiring milestone in the journey of our senior students. Engaging in a series of workshops and insightful discussions, the Year 12 cohort delved into the core values essential to effective leadership.
Under the guidance of Head of House Natasha Eshuis and Damien Meunier, Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, students explored the concept of social justice. They contemplated its significance within the context of Haileybury and deliberated on actionable strategies to embody these values in their roles as leaders. Our School Captains Madeline (Year 12) and Sean (Year 12) led students in developing ideas for social justice causes as a united cohort.
The event also featured guest presenters who shared their perspectives and experiences in leadership in the business world, enriching the discourse on leadership and its various facets. From fostering inclusivity to promoting empathy and integrity, students gained invaluable insights into the multifaceted nature of leadership and the responsibilities it entails.
A highlight of the day was Haileybury’s Founders Day Assembly, which was attended by our Year 12 Captains in person at Haileybury’s Keysborough campus, and broadcast online to all Haileybury Pangea students. We were so proud to see our campus represented at this significant occasion, and we look forward to seeing our Year 12 cohort lead exciting initiatives this year.

I would like to thank the students and academic staff of Senior School who have transitioned back into school life seamlessly and effectively over the past week. One of the biggest advantages of Haileybury’s Term 1A program is that the settling in period which accompanies any new school year is completed in November of the previous year. This allows our students and teachers to begin productive work from day one of the new school year. There have been very few changes of teachers outside those necessary to replace staff who have left the School or transferred to other campuses. I must also add a particular welcome to those students and families who have started within our Senior Schools. I hope you feel that you are part of the Haileybury community already and I look forward to meeting many of you at School functions in the coming months.
Top Class is an annual concert series coordinated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) showcasing outstanding performances by VCE and VCE VET students from schools across the state.
Congratulations to Emma (Year 12) and Teleetha (Year 12), who have been selected to perform their VCE Dance solos at Top Class Dance 2024 at Melbourne Recital Centre in March 2024.
This year, 109 top performing students were invited to audition for Top Class Dance, and only 31 students were selected to perform. Selected performers exemplify the skill and creativity that can be achieved within the VCE curriculum.

Our Founders’ Day Assembly was a wonderful occasion and a great way to enable current Haileyburians to reflect on how the School has become the large and diverse institution that it is today. The 2023 Founders’ Day Assembly featured our School Captains and Vice Captains delivering a range of information about the different generations of Haileybury founders and the things they did to contribute to the School’s growth throughout the years.

Here in Melbourne, Haileybury recently had the pleasure of hosting the Year 12 student leaders from our Haileybury Rendall School, Darwin , marking another enriching chapter in our ongoing inter-school collaboration. Accompanied by Head of Senior School, Kylie Mobilia, the fourteen students embarked on a memorable journey that was, for some, their first venture outside of the Northern Territory.
Commencing their Melbourne experience at the City campus, our student leaders then ventured to the Berwick or Keysborough campuses, fostering connections with their peers. The itinerary was packed with engaging academic sessions, attendance at the Founders’ Day assembly, and active participation in invigorating sports training. Notably, they engaged in a thoughtful dialogue with CEO | Principal Derek Scott in addition to our own local Haileybury leaders, where they shared their visionary ideas on enhancing connections between the two schools.
In the short yet impactful duration of their stay, meaningful connections were forged among the students, laying the groundwork for continued collaboration throughout their final academic year. We extend heartfelt gratitude to the families who graciously opened their homes to these students, contributing to the warmth and hospitality that define the Haileybury community spirit.
This visit not only enriched the academic and co-curricular experiences of our student leaders but also exemplified the unity and camaraderie that define the Haileybury family.
For over 25 years we have partnered with our sister school in Japan — Nihon University High School — which sees our VCE Japanese students travel to Sapporo in Japan to participate in an intensive study excursion, with a group of Nihon University High School students coming to us as part of the reciprocal program.
This week, we welcomed 83 Japanese students, 30 of whom are staying with Haileybury students and their families to experience life in an Australian school and homestay.
They have attended classes with their homestay brothers and sisters and will be attending School sport to experience the Australian APS competition across a range of different sports.
We are thrilled to welcome our Japanese students back to Haileybury and look forward to continuing this strong relationship.
Tuesday, 13 February saw many 2023 graduates return to Haileybury to take part in the annual Honours Assembly held to celebrate the academic achievements of the Class of 2023.
Haileybury’s VCE successes are so exceptional that we no longer have room in Aikman Hall to hold both Haileybury College and Haileybury Girls College at the same time. At each assembly, a range of students from Year 10, 11 and 12 were presented with awards for exemplary achievement in individual subjects before we moved to announce the names of those graduates who had been placed on the Scholars and Honours boards (those who received a 95+ ATAR).
The assemblies concluded with the school applauding the achievements of the Duces of Haileybury College, Stanley Chi and Sam Nielsen, both achieving an ATAR of 99.95 and our Dux of Haileybury Girls College Abigail Lang who achieved a 99.75, as reflection of their hard work and effort.

Parents, carers, schools and community all play an important role in protecting children and young people from, and educating them about, the harmful effects of smoking and vaping.
Research from the Royal Children’s Hospital shows many parents and carers are not aware of the harmful effects or how their views about smoking and vaping can impact the likelihood of a young person taking up smoking or vaping.
The Department of Education and Training has developed resources to help you learn more about the health risks of smoking and vaping, and some suggestions about how to talk to children and young people about vaping, and where to get support. To access the resources, please use this link.

As part of Haileybury’s ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of your children, we have installed vape sensors in our Senior School bathrooms. Should a child be identified as vaping or smoking, parents/guardians will be contacted, and disciplinary procedures followed.

Congratulations to Inakshi (Year 11) and the U16 Vic Metro cricket team who were victorious at the recent National Championships in Hobart. Undefeated going into the grand final, they defeated NSW with overs and wickets in hand. Inakshi is also our Vice Captain of Tennis and has been a member of the blazer squad since Year 9 — a wonderful ambassador for girls’ sport.
Meg (Year 11) has made the Victorian U18 Country Women’s Basketball Team.
Kate (Year 12) has been selected to the U19 Victorian State Netball Team. Kate has been working hard through the Netball Victoria Development pathways program over the past few years and has now been rewarded with a position on the team. We are so very proud of you, Kate, and wish you all the best at Nationals in April.
Congratulations also to Ella (Year 12) who was a member of the U18 Victorian Indoor Hockey Team that competed in Canberra in January. The Vics finished 3rd overall, winning 4 of their 6 matches.
Congratulations to Emily (Year 10), 1st Touch team member who has made the Victorian U20 Touch team. Emily actually played in the U16 Team last September and then over the holiday break has been promoted to the U20 State Team. Emily will head to Queensland in March for the National Championships.
