Explore Dr. Jordana Hunter's insightful talk at Haileybury, focusing on academic excellence, student wellbeing, and effective school practices. Her key insights drive discussions for ongoing improvement as the term unfolds with exciting student opportunities.
Haileybury was delighted that Grattan Institute Education Program Director Dr Jordana Hunter spoke to Haileybury's teachers on the first day of Term 2. Dr Hunter’s presentation reinforced many of the structures and operating practices that have seen Haileybury students succeed but also gave teachers and leadership some thoughtful, evidenced-based provocations for us to consider in our ongoing improvement plan.
The Grattan Institute is an independent public research organisation and produces some outstanding reports across a range of sectors. Dr Hunter was also a member of the Federal Government’s expert panel who conducted an extensive review into education across Australia. The report Improving Outcomes for All is informing the next National School Reform Agreement between the Federal Government and the states and territories.
Two key takeouts from Dr Hunter’s presentation that Haileybury focuses strongly on are that 1) academic achievement and wellbeing are mutually reinforcing (but schools should not be left with the primary responsibility for young people’s mental health) and 2) classroom behaviour is a problem in Australia (the country ranks 69 out of 76 OECD countries for disciplinary climate) and that clear, school-wide expectations, routines and sequences make a difference.
I won’t go into the granular detail of Dr Hunter’s findings about curriculum development and teaching pedagogy (rest assured our team has) but list for you the eight common features that Dr Hunter’s research has found of high excellence, high equity schools.
This list represented a good focus for subsequent discussion amongst school leadership and staff.
On the last point, a rich school life with diverse opportunities, I am very excited about the term ahead which is full of student opportunities. First team sports had a great first winter outing on Saturday and next week well over 3,000 students will be representing Haileybury in sport. The Addams Family: A New Musical starts on 26 April 2024 and there are a number of music concerts during the term across all campuses. The Year 9 students have a busy term with 31 options and expeditions going out. The Year 9 students will also be commencing the process of looking at the choices and opportunities in front of them as they work through the VCE in Years 10–12.

Across Haileybury’s campuses and various year levels, and different subjects and areas of interest, students are stepping up and taking the lead.
Along the way they make a difference to their school and the broader community, support and encourage their peers, build their confidence and leadership skills and make Haileybury an even better place to be.
In the Junior School, leadership opportunities start in Year 4 with students chosen as flag bearers, House Captains, Social Justice Captain, Environment Captain, Arts Captain, Sports Captain and Library Captain.

Tom (Year 4) is Semester 1 Social Justice Captain in the Junior School at Haileybury’s City Campus — a position he is proud to hold.
“I enjoy helping to change the Junior School for the better and helping others to be better people. I’ve learned that anyone can be a leader if they try their hardest and have the right mindset. If you set your mind to a goal, you can achieve it,” Tom says.
He says the secret to being a good school leader is ‘trying your best’.
“You must try your best, even when things become hard. You must persevere because your actions can help others when you’re a leader,” Tom says.
With leadership opportunities offered during the last year of Junior School, the recognition and structure ease the step up to Middle School, too, where there are more than 200 student leadership roles available. These include Sustainability and Environmental Captains, LEAP and STEM Captains and House Captains.
“Encouraging leadership is crucial because it offers students the opportunity to become role models. It enhances their communication abilities, cultivates a sense of responsibility and showcases initiative,” says Jacqueline.
“We see great growth in our young leaders. They receive plenty of encouragement from their peers. Families and older siblings will often offer guidance, too, and staff at school provide plenty of hands-on support. Through their leadership experiences, students become capable and confident and are ready to make a positive contribution in, and beyond, the classroom.”
At Senior School, student leadership remains an important feature of daily life. Students volunteer to join the Student Representative Council or become a Prefect, School Vice-Captain or School Captain.
“By the time students enter Year 12, regardless of whether they are voted into a position or not, they are still considered to be leaders of the school,” says Eamonn Johnson, Head of Student Leadership and SRC.
Students interested in STEM and LEAP can become captains in those areas and there are also positions for students who are passionate about Visual Arts, Debating and Library. Budding historians can preserve Haileybury’s long history as Heritage and Archives Captains.
“We also can’t forget our students who are leaders in the Pipes & Drums and Duke of Edinburgh program. The Pipes & Drums Captains have been dedicated to their craft for a number of years and are well respected by their peers. The Duke of Edinburgh Captains are also solid all-rounders, respected by other students,” says Eamonn.
“Students only spend a handful of years within the school’s walls and then they head out into the world. We know that leadership skills make you more employable but good leaders are important from a more socially conscious perspective, too.
“A smart group with a strong collective vision, guided by a practiced and empathetic leader, will move from strength to strength. Schools serve as a microcosm for the bigger world, so why not build those leadership skills now?”
By the time Haileybury’s student leaders graduate, they are ambitious to keep improving themselves and the community they are part of, and they understand what it takes to initiate positive change in the world.
The VCE Theatre Studies class welcomed guests from across the Haileybury campuses to watch their student led production of The Brother’s Grim Spectacularthon. Each year the Unit 3 Theatre Studies students participate in a 10-week production process that starts in Term 1a and culminates in the final weeks of term. Their job is to take responsibility for two areas of the production (acting, directing, sound, make-up, costume, set, props) and work through the planning, development and presentation of the play. This is from reading an assortment of plays, selecting and casting, to pitching ideas, researching their responsibilities, production meetings, designs, budgeting and so much more. This area of study aligns with professional practice and provides real world skill development.
This year’s production team, ‘Shot in the Dark Entertainment’ (their chosen production company name), produced this high-paced, hilarious and comedic re-telling of 209 Brothers Grimm stories. Conceived as a touring production that could take this children’s show around Australia, the team worked together to create a vision for the work that captured the joy, chaos and heart of a child’s imagination.
The audience laughed along and cheered enthusiastically for this hard-working group.

I hope all music students and their families were able to enjoy a restful time throughout the recent Easter break. A chance for students to have time with family away from their busy school schedules is vital. For music students, a pause from music lessons and ensemble rehearsal provides an opportunity to mentally recharge before a busy season of concerts and events commence across the school for Term 2.
For brass students the term begins with participating in the official Melbourne Anzac City Street Parade to be held this Thursday.
The Haileybury Bugle Corps is led by our brass tutor David Robinson. A Corporal in the Army Reserve, Mr Robinson has performed the Last Post and Reveille at the Melbourne Shrine Dawn Service in the past. He can also be regularly seen and heard performing at AFL and A League Anzac services on game day. Look out for Mr Robinson at the Richmond v Melbourne game this weekend.
I know our amazing musicians will march with pride and reverence on Thursday, so look out for them on the Melbourne TV broadcast!
For a number of music department staff, the Easter break was a timely chance to prepare for involvement in The Addams Family ‘pit orchestra’. In line with tradition in leading Independent Schools, Haileybury hired the professional orchestral scores that are used worldwide for any professional production of The Addams Family.
While staff enjoy the opportunity to work together as an orchestral team, these scores provide a professional challenge that is relished by the group.
The Addams Family is set to open at the end of this week with a Friday night show and a Saturday matinee. Next week there will be four additional shows.
Tickets are selling fast, and the show is expected to be a sellout. It would be great to see as many musical families in the audience as possible. You can buy tickets here.

Our Units 3 and 4 Media students recently embarked on an inspiring excursion to the Top Designs Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. Top Designs showcases the best work from the 2023 Media students across the state, inspiring our students to achieve their best as they begin their own Media projects this year. What made this experience truly exceptional was the unity of our student body, with students present from all four Melbourne campuses and Pangea. Our students were able to benefit from being a part of the One Haileybury community.
Beyond the artworks themselves, the experience of exploring the exhibition together fostered bonds among our students, sparking lively discussions and mutual inspiration. As educators, we are proud to witness our students engaging so passionately with each other and eagerly anticipate the impact of their newfound inspiration on their own projects this year as they strive to achieve their best.

Australian Pipe Band Championships were held in Maryborough on Saturday April 13. The P&D once again had a good showing, this time with both A and B bands having their moments on the podium — a first for Haileybury!
The A Band were runners up in the Novice Juvenile A category with Scotch College Melbourne coming in third and Scots College Sydney clinching the victory. The Haileybury A Band drummers won the drumming title and are now officially Australia’s top under-18 drum corp. The success continued with the B Band’s first time on the national podium, taking 3rd place in Novice Juvenile B. These are tremendous results all-round and a great way to wrap up the 2024 season. We look forward to attending the 2026 Australian Pipe Band Championships in sunny Perth, Western Australia. Go Haileybury!

The roundabout system within our gates is an efficient way to bring and collect your children from school. South Road is the preferred drop off and pick up for all students. We ask, when utilising South Road, that families are considerate of both the bike lane and other traffic that may be attempting to journey past the school. Please do not block both lanes on South Road as you attempt to enter the school. This is a safety concern.

A fun way to celebrate the end of an amazing Term 1 was with a whole ELC community event. The Bilby Hunt encouraged the children to work together, follow clues, explore the school grounds and organise all the puzzle pieces to make a bilby. It was lovely to see and feel the magic and fun these events create for the child.
Kindness in the early years lays the foundation for a child’s social and emotional development, shaping attitudes and behaviours towards others as they grow. Our curriculum cultivates kindness to foster empathy, compassion and positive relationships.
Storybooks, songs and educational materials have provided valuable opportunities for the children to practice kindness, navigate relationships, support collaborative play and resolve conflicts. The children enjoyed the storybook titled How Full Is Your Bucket, which is about filling someone’s imaginary bucket by doing kind things. It also addresses how we empty people’s buckets by unkind words or actions. You could encourage your child to put a drop in their invisible bucket or someone else’s!
Across the week, our Junior School children attend specialist lessons with dedicated teachers. In the spotlight for this edition of Insight are art and music. Our Year 4 students traced their image onto a foam sheet, and then painted, rolled and printed their image, creating awesome self-portraits. Our Preps used a stencil to trace a crown and then drew themselves as kings and queens using watercolour paints. They looked into table mirrors to examine all the details in their face to add to their work. In music classes, students clapped and identified rhythms. They then wrote their own and worked together to clap the beats.
One major highlight of the year is camp! Our Year 4 students visited The Portsea Camp for two nights in March and loved every minute. The weather was perfect for snorkelling, boogie boarding, kayaking and swimming. Teachers were impressed by the ‘give it a go’ energy of the children as they stepped out of their comfort zone and soared on the giant swing and flying fox.
Mee-Joo: “My highlight was the giant swing because the G-force was terrific, and I loved the adrenaline rush.”
Sam: “I loved having my birthday camp because it was fun, and my special cake was delicious!”
Sophie: “I loved the giant swing. Everyone pulls you up to the level you want, and I nearly did a back flip, my legs were shaking!”
Austin: “My favourite thing was the snorkelling because I enjoyed seeing all the sea life and even though the water was cold, I still really enjoyed it.”
Charlotte: “I like the surf live-saving games, it was fun being in the water with friends.”
Roger: “The snorkelling was my highlight. It was a new experience for me.”
In the last week of Term 1, our Years 7 and 8 students headed off on their eagerly awaited camp experience — in beautiful weather! The Year 7’s embarked on an immersive experience to Camp Jungai, trying their hand at ropes courses, learning about bush foods and canoeing in the Rubicon Valley. Not too far down the road in Marysville, our Year 8 students built on their skills developed at Year 7 camp the prior year and tackled new challenges of hiking and activities that saw them connecting and embracing the beautiful outdoors and landscape around them.
Our Middle School Musical rehearsals are up and running, with the production of Shrek Jnr, set to be a sell out in Term 3! The cast, made up of Years 5–8 students, collaborates alongside each other and are led by our wonderful Creative Arts team, as they learn, fine tune and master their roles. We are so excited to see their progress throughout the term.
As the seasons change, so does our uniform in the Middle School. For the first three weeks of Term, students may wear either the summer or winter uniform. From the beginning of Week 4 (6 May), all students are required to be in winter uniform until the beginning of Term 4.
In addition to our uniform expectations, as we begin Term 2, our expectations of our students begin on day one. We consistently talk about the importance of routine, attitude and effort to assist our students to get the best out of themselves and positively contribute to our community at Castlefield. The first step for all our students to start the day in the best way is to arrive at school on time, aiming for an arrival time of 8.20 am, so they are prepared and ready to dive into the day ahead.

The majority of our City families have visited Royal Children’s Hospital for one reason or another, so this cause is very close to our hearts. We thank our City community for supporting the chocolate hamper fundraiser. Our Chief Operating Officer, Rebecca Arceri joined our final assemblies to draw the winning tickets. Congratulations to Charlie (Year 4) and Alicia (Year 6). Our ELC and Junior School raised $830.00 and our Middle and Senior School raised $1,555.00. Thank you to our Social Justice Captains who led this initiative with Karen Dobbyn, our Social Justice Coordinator. What a great result for the RCH!
As the sun set over the Melbourne City skyline, our City parents and friends enjoyed a beautiful evening of friendship, music, fun and laughter. Our guest speaker, Eve (Year 12), shared the inspirational message to always back yourself and take up the many opportunities available at Haileybury. Our Vocal Ensemble performed three amazing songs and the crowd were wowed. Our Vice Principal, Scott Doran, drew the Lucky Door Prizes and we were thrilled to have so many new families join our community. As children continue to build connections and learn more about their peers, the concept of the Group Plan has recently been introduced in Reception. It supports children to connect with their peers socially and within the world around them.
Children have explored the idea that there are times when they can form their own plan — this may be in a game or group activity that others may choose to join in. At other times it may be necessary to join someone else’s plan.
This language also supports the daily routine within the ELC where there may be a whole group plan for an activity or group time.
The Pre-Prep children are building on these strong social foundations to begin their first ‘class project’ for the year. The Pre-Prep collaborative art project involves the children working together to create an airport dramatic play space, based on their interests of going on a holiday. They have created various signs like the check-in counter, customs, and the security checkpoint.
The project will develop fine motor skills, including pencil and scissor grip and manipulating different materials to enhance fine motor control and dexterity. The project also fosters communication and negotiation skills as children work together to develop a group plan.
The Year 4 students from Haileybury City had an exciting time during their recent Portsea Camp adventure! Brimming with enthusiasm and openness to new experiences, they eagerly embraced the chance to bond in a different environment, and the weather could not have been more spectacular.
Together, they explored a range of activities such as fishing off Portsea Pier, braving the giant swing, beach walks, snorkelling and a very competitive game of Ga-Ga Ball. Throughout the camp, the emphasis was on creating lasting memories and tackling challenges head-on.
On Wednesday, 27 March, the Junior School House Athletics Carnival took place, involving students from Prep to Year 4. Starting after Recess at the Collingwood Harriers Athletic Club in Clifton Hill, the event offered a variety of track and field activities for the enthusiastic participants to showcase the skills they have honed during their PE classes. The Carnival proved to be a resounding success, fostering a spirit of friendly rivalry as students competed for points to boost their House’s standing on the leaderboard. Adding to the lively atmosphere were the Year 4 House Captains, who brought House-themed accessories and spirited chants to the festivities.
And the winning House for 2024 was … Main House!
As part of the Children’s Theatre unit in Year 8 Drama: Collaboration to Creation at City, the Year 8 students worked alongside the Prep class on an audio-theatre experience. The Preps were led through a series of activities by the Year 8 students that required them to use their imaginations as they role-played being explorers. Over two extended lessons, the Prep students waded through rivers, sheltered in tents, climbed through caves and got stuck in lava as they tried to discover the whereabouts of the elusive mountain goat. Both the Year 8s and Preps had a wonderful time working together in a creative space and this cross-age educational experience has seen a strong bond develop between them all.
Our Middle School students had an exciting day at the Athletics Carnival. It was fabulous to witness students come together, each contributing to a range of sporting endeavours. Thank you to Nick Fisher (House Convenor), and the Heads of House (David Powell, Holly Emslie, Alex Polly, and Georgia Hall) for coordinating an excellent carnival.
The House relays emerged as a standout moment, demonstrating the essence of House spirit and teamwork. As students raced across the track, the sidelines were filled with encouragement from fellow House mates.
We are immensely proud of every student who participated, embodying the values of sportsmanship and determination throughout the day’s events.
It was a delight to extend a warm invitation to our Year 7 parents to actively participate in a classroom lesson alongside their young learners. At Haileybury, we cherish the opportunity to welcome parents into the very heart of their child’s educational journey, fostering a deep sense of connection and engagement with the learning environment that shapes their everyday experiences.
Throughout the day, parents had the pleasure of immersing themselves in both English and Maths lessons alongside their children, experiencing firsthand the dynamic learning spaces where our students thrive.

This term we celebrated the remarkable achievement of our very own Louise Elletson, who was acknowledged with the Highly Accomplished Teacher (HALT) award. This milestone serves as a testament to Louise’s exceptional dedication and expertise, duly acknowledged by Independent Schools Victoria.
Louise imparts her wealth of knowledge in the field of Science to our JS and MS students daily. She also provides our students with co-curricular opportunities, spearheading initiatives such as Tournament of Minds and Science Talent Search.

The night was a sellout which is a lovely compliment to the HPF Committee and the Haileybury Executive who put in many hours of preparation. We hope you had the chance to build your friendship circle and enjoy yourselves.

Our award-winning and unique boarding school is developing in many exciting ways.
Firstly, we are increasing our intake of students from Victoria and in Semester 1 of 2024 we will have had three Haileybury Year 9 girls from the Berwick campus living and learning with us in our boarding facility onsite in Darwin. Rebekah and Marley will continue after a successful Term 1, and we look forward to welcoming Pearl for Term 2.
Our second area of development is enlarging opportunities for international boarders from across south-east Asia, and in Term 1 we visited both Vietnam and China to expand our footprint and connections. A visit to the Haileybury, Tianjin school just south of Beijing was a highlight and we hope to organise student study tours between the schools in the near future.
Finally, our commitment to providing quality boarding and education for remote and very remote Indigenous students remains fundamental to the DNA of our school and we have continued to enhance our offering and facilities for all students.
Together, this makes our boarding school a truly unique Australian place to live and learn.

The ELC children have been blessed with opportunities to celebrate Harmony Week. Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
On Tuesday, 19 March the ELC and JS hosted our Grandparents and Special Friends morning. Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day is a wonderful occasion that creates lasting memories. It helps children feel a sense of belonging and connection to their family and community. Seeing their loved ones involved in their school life is very meaningful and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate important relationships in a child’s life.
On Wednesday, 20 March the ELC children had a visit from Didgeridoo Australia performers Baz and Sean. Through this performance children were taken on an interactive storytelling and song journey, learning the meanings and actions behind each song. Sean showcased his didgeridoo skills by performing various animal noises for the children to listen to and guess. It was a lovely way for the children to engage in inspirational cultural experiences that reflect understanding and respect of our First Nations people.
Last term our Junior School students participated in a wheel-a-thon fundraiser for the Monash Children’s Hospital. The children loved this event and the idea of completing laps to raise money for children in need. To submit your donations, please contact Edrington Reception via email, alternatively you can bring a cash donation to your child's homeroom teacher. At the end of Week 2, Friday, 26 April we will arrange for the money to be transferred to our charity, so please have all donations to school by this date. Thank you to everyone for their help in getting bikes and scooters to and from school and to the teachers for assisting.
On Thursday 25 April, Haileybury will be well-represented in the Anzac Day Memorial Service in Berwick. Each year we proudly participate in this special event on what is an important day in the Australian calendar. We thank the students who are planning to march with us on the day.
On 10 May, from 7.45 am – 8.45 am, mums, special friends and Middle School boys and girls will be warmly welcomed to attend our special breakfast in John Twist Hall. We have planned photo booths for fun family photos and we hope the occasion will be a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Complimentary tickets are now available on Humanitix here. We wish all our mums a very Happy Mother’s Day.
Also on 10 May, we are hosting a Middle School Movie Night at Village Cinemas, Fountain Gate, Narre Warren, from 5.30 pm until 8.00 pm. We hope to see many of our Years 5 to 8 boys and girls for this special event as we watch Kung Fu Panda 4. This is an event for students only and will be well supervised by staff. Hi Edrington! Thank you so much to everyone who came to support our Trivia night. We had a ball! Together we raised $302.00 for the Middle School students’ Gaga pits! The HPFE will be installing these in the playground for the students to enjoy.
There were many laughs, and competitive streaks were released, but most of all the night was so much fun that we can’t wait to hold this event again later this year. Get your teams ready — there is a score to settle.

Recently at Newlands we raised a total of $4,837.00 for The Miranda Foundation helping children with cancer. One hundred per cent of funds raised go to Monash Children’s Cancer Centre.
Sangwell House casual clothes day raised $1,273.00 and a whopping $3,564.00 from the sausage sizzle, 1,800 sausages were consumed.
We had so many hands on deck; Newlands staff, parents, Facilities staff, Senior School students, random people asking if they could assist when we looked a bit ‘sausaged out’. It was a wonderful team effort.
Throughout the holiday program and into the beginning of the new term, learning has centred around nature exploration, creativity and environmental consciousness.
Our children delved into the realm of sustainability by setting up and understanding the workings of worm farms, fostering an ethos of environmental responsibility. Nature walks provided opportunities for discovery and appreciation of the world around them with children noticing the colour and textural changes in the leaves due to the arrival of autumn. The children then utilised the vibrant autumn leaves collected to create artworks that celebrate the beauty of the season, which tied into stories read at group times.
We look forward to the continued opportunities for learning that the change in season brings.

BioEYES at Monash University is an award-winning, innovative, hands-on approach to teaching secondary students about science.
Over the course of a week, students nurture the development of zebrafish embryos, observing the transparent eggs change from a single-celled zygotes to free-swimming larvae.
Students develop their critical thinking skills and perform collaborative experiments as they study the lifespan and development of the zebrafish, anatomy and genetics.
Haileybury is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of its students. As part of this commitment, the School has recently updated its Student Head Injury and Concussion Procedure to provide the highest level of care for students who have experienced head injuries that may have resulted in concussions.

Sam Shinsky and Moksh Goswami are two of over 35 recipients of the new OHA Relocation Bursary offered to the Class of 2023 who have relocated to secure a place in tertiary education. Both accepted an offer at the University of NSW in Sydney. Sam is studying a Bachelor of Commerce – Finance and Banking, and Moksh is studying Medicine.
Sam shared with us the following: “I absolutely love Sydney, and it was my first preference to do this degree at UNSW, as it’s one of the leading business schools in Asia/Pacific for my specific area of interest, Finance. I am hoping to capitalise on opportunities with this degree to continue and do further study overseas in either Hong Kong or the USA. I also have a part-time job at the Australian Turf Club as a Jockeys Room Attendant on race days, which has fitted in perfectly with my university schedule. The OHA Relocation Bursary was a tremendous help for me to get my room set up at college, from the basics for day to day living to a study setup that will help me make the absolute most out of my university studies. I can’t thank the OHA enough for such a great initiative!”

Last month, we celebrated the OHA Generations Breakfast at the Berwick campus. It was wonderful to see more than 60 grandparents, parents, students and staff come together and celebrate their history at Haileybury.
Families were treated to a delicious breakfast and family portrait while listening to the amazingly talented String Quartet. We were also delighted that our inaugural family Kahoot was well received and keenly contested!

The Haileybury College Year 12 Formal was held on the last evening of Term 1 at the Sofitel Melbourne. The event is always a social highlight for the students. Overseen by the Haileybury College Heads of House and members of the Senior School leadership team, the students enjoyed dinner and dancing in the ballroom, with the opportunity for photos with their peers and teachers throughout the evening.
It was a wonderful opportunity for the Year 12s to celebrate the end of their first term with the academic rigours of the past couple of months temporarily put aside. Instead, the very special friendships and camaraderie that are forged throughout their final year came to the fore. It was a fantastic way to begin the break and have a bit of fun as a cohort.
A range of students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have recently been announced as members of the 2024 Student Representative Council (SRC) for their year levels. While there are too many names to mention within this short newsletter, I would like to heartily congratulate those who put themselves forward for leadership positions and were then elected to these positions by their peers. Haileybury offers many opportunities for student leadership and supports those in leadership positions to work together to make the School a wonderful place to be.

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding accomplishments of our talented students in the Haileybury Pipes & Drums at the Victorian Pipe Band Championships, which took place on Sunday, 24 March at the Melbourne Highland Games & Celtic Festival. These represent our best results at a Victorian Championship to date.
Haileybury #1 (A Band) had a tremendous day successfully defending their 2022 and 2023 state titles. Haileybury P&D are now Juvenile Novice A State Champions for the third year running edging out tough competition from interschool rivals, Scotch College #1. The band was also runner-up in Grade 3 behind strong opposition from the City of Melbourne Pipe Band, narrowly missing out by just two placings.
Haileybury #2 (B Band) also put on a great show, coming 3rd in the Juvenile Novice B Medley, 3rd in the Juvenile Novice B marches and gaining a credible 5th place in a highly contested Grade 4B section in a field of over 10 other bands.
Haileybury #3 (C Band) also achieved a commendable 5th place in the Juvenile Novice B Marches ahead of Scotch College #3 who came in 6th place.
We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.
Thank you to Dan Staley and Tom Perry for their hard work and for stepping up to ensure all three bands competed at full capacity. The competition was a huge success, and the collective effort of the entire team, including Rhonda, Sam, Ellen and Angus, was instrumental in our students’ achievements on the day. We could not have done it without you all.
We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to all parents/supporters and the Friends of the Pipes & Drums on the day for your unwavering encouragement and assistance with the bands.
Congratulations to Anay (Year 9) receiving 3rd place at such a young age and against seasoned competitors, including teams of university students, PhD candidates, aerospace engineers, and regolith specialists, showcases his innovative thinking and diligence in the recent Australian Rover Challenge. The Australian Rover Challenge (ARCh) is an annual robotics competition held by the University of Adelaide, where university students from across Australia and around the globe, battle it out in a full-scale Lunar mission, using semi-autonomous rovers that they have designed and built themselves.
Competitors showcase their skills in a custom built simulated lunar environment, and complete a range of tasks including navigation, resource, and construction. Unlike many other rover competitions across the world which focus on Martian exploration, the ARCh is focused specifically on completing tasks on a simulated Lunar surface.
We also congratulate Anay (Year 9) on his significant achievement in the ELO2 Big Dipper Regolith Acquisition Challenge, sponsored by the Australian Space Agency, is a major milestone in Australia's lunar exploration efforts. Competing individually, Anay designed "Venna," inspired by the Indigenous Australian name for the moon, earning third place and $975. Despite his young age of 13, he competed against teams of experts in aerospace and lunar regolith, showcasing his talent and potential to contribute significantly to space exploration.
Anay aspires to be a flight surgeon for astronauts and views this achievement as a stepping stone towards his goal. The One Giant Leap Foundation recognized his efforts and invited him to share his experiences and future goals in space innovation on their podcast, which was widely promoted on social media. Anay’s accomplishments reflect the values and spirit of the Haileybury community, and we are incredibly proud of him.
A reminder that in Term 2 students wear winter Uniform; however, we will have three weeks at the beginning of the term when students may continue to wear summer uniform.

Haileybury was delighted that Grattan Institute Education Program Director Dr Jordana Hunter spoke to Haileybury's teachers on the first day of Term 2. Dr Hunter’s presentation reinforced many of the structures and operating practices that have seen Haileybury students succeed but also gave teachers and leadership some thoughtful, evidenced-based provocations for us to consider in our ongoing improvement plan.
The Grattan Institute is an independent public research organisation and produces some outstanding reports across a range of sectors. Dr Hunter was also a member of the Federal Government’s expert panel who conducted an extensive review into education across Australia. The report Improving Outcomes for All is informing the next National School Reform Agreement between the Federal Government and the states and territories.
Two key takeouts from Dr Hunter’s presentation that Haileybury focuses strongly on are that 1) academic achievement and wellbeing are mutually reinforcing (but schools should not be left with the primary responsibility for young people’s mental health) and 2) classroom behaviour is a problem in Australia (the country ranks 69 out of 76 OECD countries for disciplinary climate) and that clear, school-wide expectations, routines and sequences make a difference.
I won’t go into the granular detail of Dr Hunter’s findings about curriculum development and teaching pedagogy (rest assured our team has) but list for you the eight common features that Dr Hunter’s research has found of high excellence, high equity schools.
This list represented a good focus for subsequent discussion amongst school leadership and staff.
On the last point, a rich school life with diverse opportunities, I am very excited about the term ahead which is full of student opportunities. First team sports had a great first winter outing on Saturday and next week well over 3,000 students will be representing Haileybury in sport. The Addams Family: A New Musical starts on 26 April 2024 and there are a number of music concerts during the term across all campuses. The Year 9 students have a busy term with 31 options and expeditions going out. The Year 9 students will also be commencing the process of looking at the choices and opportunities in front of them as they work through the VCE in Years 10–12.

Across Haileybury’s campuses and various year levels, and different subjects and areas of interest, students are stepping up and taking the lead.
Along the way they make a difference to their school and the broader community, support and encourage their peers, build their confidence and leadership skills and make Haileybury an even better place to be.
In the Junior School, leadership opportunities start in Year 4 with students chosen as flag bearers, House Captains, Social Justice Captain, Environment Captain, Arts Captain, Sports Captain and Library Captain.
“Year 4 student leaders can lead sports and arts events, social justice initiatives and deliver speeches at our fortnightly assemblies,” says Jacqueline Gough, Head of Junior School at City Campus.

Tom (Year 4) is Semester 1 Social Justice Captain in the Junior School at Haileybury’s City Campus — a position he is proud to hold.
“I enjoy helping to change the Junior School for the better and helping others to be better people. I’ve learned that anyone can be a leader if they try their hardest and have the right mindset. If you set your mind to a goal, you can achieve it,” Tom says.
He says the secret to being a good school leader is ‘trying your best’.
“You must try your best, even when things become hard. You must persevere because your actions can help others when you’re a leader,” Tom says.
With leadership opportunities offered during the last year of Junior School, the recognition and structure ease the step up to Middle School, too, where there are more than 200 student leadership roles available. These include Sustainability and Environmental Captains, LEAP and STEM Captains and House Captains.
“Encouraging leadership is crucial because it offers students the opportunity to become role models. It enhances their communication abilities, cultivates a sense of responsibility and showcases initiative,” says Jacqueline.
“We see great growth in our young leaders. They receive plenty of encouragement from their peers. Families and older siblings will often offer guidance, too, and staff at school provide plenty of hands-on support. Through their leadership experiences, students become capable and confident and are ready to make a positive contribution in, and beyond, the classroom.”
At Senior School, student leadership remains an important feature of daily life. Students volunteer to join the Student Representative Council or become a Prefect, School Vice-Captain or School Captain.
“By the time students enter Year 12, regardless of whether they are voted into a position or not, they are still considered to be leaders of the school,” says Eamonn Johnson, Head of Student Leadership and SRC.
Students interested in STEM and LEAP can become captains in those areas and there are also positions for students who are passionate about Visual Arts, Debating and Library. Budding historians can preserve Haileybury’s long history as Heritage and Archives Captains.
“We also can’t forget our students who are leaders in the Pipes & Drums and Duke of Edinburgh program. The Pipes & Drums Captains have been dedicated to their craft for a number of years and are well respected by their peers. The Duke of Edinburgh Captains are also solid all-rounders, respected by other students,” says Eamonn.
“Students only spend a handful of years within the school’s walls and then they head out into the world. We know that leadership skills make you more employable but good leaders are important from a more socially conscious perspective, too.
“A smart group with a strong collective vision, guided by a practiced and empathetic leader, will move from strength to strength. Schools serve as a microcosm for the bigger world, so why not build those leadership skills now?”
By the time Haileybury’s student leaders graduate, they are ambitious to keep improving themselves and the community they are part of, and they understand what it takes to initiate positive change in the world.
The VCE Theatre Studies class welcomed guests from across the Haileybury campuses to watch their student led production of The Brother’s Grim Spectacularthon. Each year the Unit 3 Theatre Studies students participate in a 10-week production process that starts in Term 1a and culminates in the final weeks of term. Their job is to take responsibility for two areas of the production (acting, directing, sound, make-up, costume, set, props) and work through the planning, development and presentation of the play. This is from reading an assortment of plays, selecting and casting, to pitching ideas, researching their responsibilities, production meetings, designs, budgeting and so much more. This area of study aligns with professional practice and provides real world skill development.
This year’s production team, ‘Shot in the Dark Entertainment’ (their chosen production company name), produced this high-paced, hilarious and comedic re-telling of 209 Brothers Grimm stories. Conceived as a touring production that could take this children’s show around Australia, the team worked together to create a vision for the work that captured the joy, chaos and heart of a child’s imagination.
The audience laughed along and cheered enthusiastically for this hard-working group.

I hope all music students and their families were able to enjoy a restful time throughout the recent Easter break. A chance for students to have time with family away from their busy school schedules is vital. For music students, a pause from music lessons and ensemble rehearsal provides an opportunity to mentally recharge before a busy season of concerts and events commence across the school for Term 2.
For brass students the term begins with participating in the official Melbourne Anzac City Street Parade to be held this Thursday.
The Haileybury Bugle Corps is led by our brass tutor David Robinson. A Corporal in the Army Reserve, Mr Robinson has performed the Last Post and Reveille at the Melbourne Shrine Dawn Service in the past. He can also be regularly seen and heard performing at AFL and A League Anzac services on game day. Look out for Mr Robinson at the Richmond v Melbourne game this weekend.
I know our amazing musicians will march with pride and reverence on Thursday, so look out for them on the Melbourne TV broadcast!
For a number of music department staff, the Easter break was a timely chance to prepare for involvement in The Addams Family ‘pit orchestra’. In line with tradition in leading Independent Schools, Haileybury hired the professional orchestral scores that are used worldwide for any professional production of The Addams Family.
While staff enjoy the opportunity to work together as an orchestral team, these scores provide a professional challenge that is relished by the group.
The Addams Family is set to open at the end of this week with a Friday night show and a Saturday matinee. Next week there will be four additional shows.
Tickets are selling fast, and the show is expected to be a sellout. It would be great to see as many musical families in the audience as possible. You can buy tickets here.

Our Units 3 and 4 Media students recently embarked on an inspiring excursion to the Top Designs Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. Top Designs showcases the best work from the 2023 Media students across the state, inspiring our students to achieve their best as they begin their own Media projects this year. What made this experience truly exceptional was the unity of our student body, with students present from all four Melbourne campuses and Pangea. Our students were able to benefit from being a part of the One Haileybury community.
Beyond the artworks themselves, the experience of exploring the exhibition together fostered bonds among our students, sparking lively discussions and mutual inspiration. As educators, we are proud to witness our students engaging so passionately with each other and eagerly anticipate the impact of their newfound inspiration on their own projects this year as they strive to achieve their best.

Australian Pipe Band Championships were held in Maryborough on Saturday April 13. The P&D once again had a good showing, this time with both A and B bands having their moments on the podium — a first for Haileybury!
The A Band were runners up in the Novice Juvenile A category with Scotch College Melbourne coming in third and Scots College Sydney clinching the victory. The Haileybury A Band drummers won the drumming title and are now officially Australia’s top under-18 drum corp. The success continued with the B Band’s first time on the national podium, taking 3rd place in Novice Juvenile B. These are tremendous results all-round and a great way to wrap up the 2024 season. We look forward to attending the 2026 Australian Pipe Band Championships in sunny Perth, Western Australia. Go Haileybury!

The roundabout system within our gates is an efficient way to bring and collect your children from school. South Road is the preferred drop off and pick up for all students. We ask, when utilising South Road, that families are considerate of both the bike lane and other traffic that may be attempting to journey past the school. Please do not block both lanes on South Road as you attempt to enter the school. This is a safety concern.
A reminder that Years 10–12 students are not to enter/exit the school via Villeroy Street.

A fun way to celebrate the end of an amazing Term 1 was with a whole ELC community event. The Bilby Hunt encouraged the children to work together, follow clues, explore the school grounds and organise all the puzzle pieces to make a bilby. It was lovely to see and feel the magic and fun these events create for the child.
Kindness in the early years lays the foundation for a child’s social and emotional development, shaping attitudes and behaviours towards others as they grow. Our curriculum cultivates kindness to foster empathy, compassion and positive relationships.
Storybooks, songs and educational materials have provided valuable opportunities for the children to practice kindness, navigate relationships, support collaborative play and resolve conflicts. The children enjoyed the storybook titled How Full Is Your Bucket, which is about filling someone’s imaginary bucket by doing kind things. It also addresses how we empty people’s buckets by unkind words or actions. You could encourage your child to put a drop in their invisible bucket or someone else’s!
Across the week, our Junior School children attend specialist lessons with dedicated teachers. In the spotlight for this edition of Insight are art and music. Our Year 4 students traced their image onto a foam sheet, and then painted, rolled and printed their image, creating awesome self-portraits. Our Preps used a stencil to trace a crown and then drew themselves as kings and queens using watercolour paints. They looked into table mirrors to examine all the details in their face to add to their work. In music classes, students clapped and identified rhythms. They then wrote their own and worked together to clap the beats.
One major highlight of the year is camp! Our Year 4 students visited The Portsea Camp for two nights in March and loved every minute. The weather was perfect for snorkelling, boogie boarding, kayaking and swimming. Teachers were impressed by the ‘give it a go’ energy of the children as they stepped out of their comfort zone and soared on the giant swing and flying fox.
Mee-Joo: “My highlight was the giant swing because the G-force was terrific, and I loved the adrenaline rush.”
Sam: “I loved having my birthday camp because it was fun, and my special cake was delicious!”
Sophie: “I loved the giant swing. Everyone pulls you up to the level you want, and I nearly did a back flip, my legs were shaking!”
Austin: “My favourite thing was the snorkelling because I enjoyed seeing all the sea life and even though the water was cold, I still really enjoyed it.”
Charlotte: “I like the surf live-saving games, it was fun being in the water with friends.”
Roger: “The snorkelling was my highlight. It was a new experience for me.”
In the last week of Term 1, our Years 7 and 8 students headed off on their eagerly awaited camp experience — in beautiful weather! The Year 7’s embarked on an immersive experience to Camp Jungai, trying their hand at ropes courses, learning about bush foods and canoeing in the Rubicon Valley. Not too far down the road in Marysville, our Year 8 students built on their skills developed at Year 7 camp the prior year and tackled new challenges of hiking and activities that saw them connecting and embracing the beautiful outdoors and landscape around them.
Our Middle School Musical rehearsals are up and running, with the production of Shrek Jnr, set to be a sell out in Term 3! The cast, made up of Years 5–8 students, collaborates alongside each other and are led by our wonderful Creative Arts team, as they learn, fine tune and master their roles. We are so excited to see their progress throughout the term.
As the seasons change, so does our uniform in the Middle School. For the first three weeks of Term, students may wear either the summer or winter uniform. From the beginning of Week 4 (6 May), all students are required to be in winter uniform until the beginning of Term 4.
In addition to our uniform expectations, as we begin Term 2, our expectations of our students begin on day one. We consistently talk about the importance of routine, attitude and effort to assist our students to get the best out of themselves and positively contribute to our community at Castlefield. The first step for all our students to start the day in the best way is to arrive at school on time, aiming for an arrival time of 8.20 am, so they are prepared and ready to dive into the day ahead.

The majority of our City families have visited Royal Children’s Hospital for one reason or another, so this cause is very close to our hearts. We thank our City community for supporting the chocolate hamper fundraiser. Our Chief Operating Officer, Rebecca Arceri joined our final assemblies to draw the winning tickets. Congratulations to Charlie (Year 4) and Alicia (Year 6). Our ELC and Junior School raised $830.00 and our Middle and Senior School raised $1,555.00. Thank you to our Social Justice Captains who led this initiative with Karen Dobbyn, our Social Justice Coordinator. What a great result for the RCH!
As the sun set over the Melbourne City skyline, our City parents and friends enjoyed a beautiful evening of friendship, music, fun and laughter. Our guest speaker, Eve (Year 12), shared the inspirational message to always back yourself and take up the many opportunities available at Haileybury. Our Vocal Ensemble performed three amazing songs and the crowd were wowed. Our Vice Principal, Scott Doran, drew the Lucky Door Prizes and we were thrilled to have so many new families join our community. Our Cocktail Party in Term 3 is sure to be another great event, so stay tuned for details on the app. Thank you to Melissa Fisher and all the HPF reps for creating a wonderful experience full of sparkle!

As children continue to build connections and learn more about their peers, the concept of the Group Plan has recently been introduced in Reception. It supports children to connect with their peers socially and within the world around them.
Children have explored the idea that there are times when they can form their own plan — this may be in a game or group activity that others may choose to join in. At other times it may be necessary to join someone else’s plan.
This language also supports the daily routine within the ELC where there may be a whole group plan for an activity or group time.
The Pre-Prep children are building on these strong social foundations to begin their first ‘class project’ for the year. The Pre-Prep collaborative art project involves the children working together to create an airport dramatic play space, based on their interests of going on a holiday. They have created various signs like the check-in counter, customs, and the security checkpoint.
The project will develop fine motor skills, including pencil and scissor grip and manipulating different materials to enhance fine motor control and dexterity. The project also fosters communication and negotiation skills as children work together to develop a group plan.
The Year 4 students from Haileybury City had an exciting time during their recent Portsea Camp adventure! Brimming with enthusiasm and openness to new experiences, they eagerly embraced the chance to bond in a different environment, and the weather could not have been more spectacular.
Together, they explored a range of activities such as fishing off Portsea Pier, braving the giant swing, beach walks, snorkelling and a very competitive game of Ga-Ga Ball. Throughout the camp, the emphasis was on creating lasting memories and tackling challenges head-on.
On Wednesday, 27 March, the Junior School House Athletics Carnival took place, involving students from Prep to Year 4. Starting after Recess at the Collingwood Harriers Athletic Club in Clifton Hill, the event offered a variety of track and field activities for the enthusiastic participants to showcase the skills they have honed during their PE classes. The Carnival proved to be a resounding success, fostering a spirit of friendly rivalry as students competed for points to boost their House’s standing on the leaderboard. Adding to the lively atmosphere were the Year 4 House Captains, who brought House-themed accessories and spirited chants to the festivities.
And the winning House for 2024 was … Main House!
As part of the Children’s Theatre unit in Year 8 Drama: Collaboration to Creation at City, the Year 8 students worked alongside the Prep class on an audio-theatre experience. The Preps were led through a series of activities by the Year 8 students that required them to use their imaginations as they role-played being explorers. Over two extended lessons, the Prep students waded through rivers, sheltered in tents, climbed through caves and got stuck in lava as they tried to discover the whereabouts of the elusive mountain goat. Both the Year 8s and Preps had a wonderful time working together in a creative space and this cross-age educational experience has seen a strong bond develop between them all.
Our Middle School students had an exciting day at the Athletics Carnival. It was fabulous to witness students come together, each contributing to a range of sporting endeavours. Thank you to Nick Fisher (House Convenor), and the Heads of House (David Powell, Holly Emslie, Alex Polly, and Georgia Hall) for coordinating an excellent carnival.
The House relays emerged as a standout moment, demonstrating the essence of House spirit and teamwork. As students raced across the track, the sidelines were filled with encouragement from fellow House mates.
We are immensely proud of every student who participated, embodying the values of sportsmanship and determination throughout the day’s events.
It was a delight to extend a warm invitation to our Year 7 parents to actively participate in a classroom lesson alongside their young learners. At Haileybury, we cherish the opportunity to welcome parents into the very heart of their child’s educational journey, fostering a deep sense of connection and engagement with the learning environment that shapes their everyday experiences.
Throughout the day, parents had the pleasure of immersing themselves in both English and Maths lessons alongside their children, experiencing firsthand the dynamic learning spaces where our students thrive.
Haileybury is privileged to have an array of exceptional professionals who dedicate themselves to shaping the minds of our students daily. This term we celebrated the remarkable achievement of our very own Louise Elletson, who was acknowledged with the Highly Accomplished Teacher (HALT) award. This milestone serves as a testament to Louise’s exceptional dedication and expertise, duly acknowledged by Independent Schools Victoria.
Louise imparts her wealth of knowledge in the field of Science to our JS and MS students daily. She also provides our students with co-curricular opportunities, spearheading initiatives such as Tournament of Minds and Science Talent Search.
City extends its gratitude to exceptional educators like Louise, whose tireless efforts and unwavering dedication add greatly to the fabric of our City community.

The Rooftop Party was once again a fantastic night, with perfect weather for making new connections and taking in the glorious Melbourne skyline from Haileybury City’s rooftop. The night was a sellout which is a lovely compliment to the HPF Committee and the Haileybury Executive who put in many hours of preparation. We hope you had the chance to build your friendship circle and enjoy yourselves.
Thanks again to Gabe Di Martino and his team for assisting with the set up and pack-up on the night. Also, a big thank you to Caroline and the Haileybury Exec Team who attended on the night. A special thank you to Scott Doran, to Eve , our wonderful Year 12 exchange student and to the Vocal Ensemble for their wonderful performance on the night.

Our award-winning and unique boarding school is developing in many exciting ways.
Firstly, we are increasing our intake of students from Victoria and in Semester 1 of 2024 we will have had three Haileybury Year 9 girls from the Berwick campus living and learning with us in our boarding facility onsite in Darwin. Rebekah and Marley will continue after a successful Term 1, and we look forward to welcoming Pearl for Term 2.
Our second area of development is enlarging opportunities for international boarders from across south-east Asia, and in Term 1 we visited both Vietnam and China to expand our footprint and connections. A visit to the Haileybury, Tianjin school just south of Beijing was a highlight and we hope to organise student study tours between the schools in the near future.
Finally, our commitment to providing quality boarding and education for remote and very remote Indigenous students remains fundamental to the DNA of our school and we have continued to enhance our offering and facilities for all students.
Together, this makes our boarding school a truly unique Australian place to live and learn.

The ELC children have been blessed with opportunities to celebrate Harmony Week. Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
On Tuesday, 19 March the ELC and JS hosted our Grandparents and Special Friends morning. Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day is a wonderful occasion that creates lasting memories. It helps children feel a sense of belonging and connection to their family and community. Seeing their loved ones involved in their school life is very meaningful and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate important relationships in a child’s life.
On Wednesday, 20 March the ELC children had a visit from Didgeridoo Australia performers Baz and Sean. Through this performance children were taken on an interactive storytelling and song journey, learning the meanings and actions behind each song. Sean showcased his didgeridoo skills by performing various animal noises for the children to listen to and guess. It was a lovely way for the children to engage in inspirational cultural experiences that reflect understanding and respect of our First Nations people.
Last term our Junior School students participated in a wheel-a-thon fundraiser for the Monash Children’s Hospital. The children loved this event and the idea of completing laps to raise money for children in need. To submit your donations, please contact Edrington Reception via email, alternatively you can bring a cash donation to your child's homeroom teacher. At the end of Week 2, Friday, 26 April we will arrange for the money to be transferred to our charity, so please have all donations to school by this date. Thank you to everyone for their help in getting bikes and scooters to and from school and to the teachers for assisting.
On Thursday 25 April, Haileybury will be well-represented in the Anzac Day Memorial Service in Berwick. Each year we proudly participate in this special event on what is an important day in the Australian calendar. We thank the students who are planning to march with us on the day.
On 10 May, from 7.45 am – 8.45 am, mums, special friends and Middle School boys and girls will be warmly welcomed to attend our special breakfast in John Twist Hall. We have planned photo booths for fun family photos and we hope the occasion will be a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Complimentary tickets are now available on Humanitix here. We wish all our mums a very Happy Mother’s Day.
Also on 10 May, we are hosting a Middle School Movie Night at Village Cinemas, Fountain Gate, Narre Warren, from 5.30 pm until 8.00 pm. We hope to see many of our Years 5 to 8 boys and girls for this special event as we watch Kung Fu Panda 4. This is an event for students only and will be well supervised by staff. Hi Edrington! Thank you so much to everyone who came to support our Trivia night. We had a ball! Together we raised $302.00 for the Middle School students’ Gaga pits! The HPFE will be installing these in the playground for the students to enjoy.
There were many laughs, and competitive streaks were released, but most of all the night was so much fun that we can’t wait to hold this event again later this year. Get your teams ready — there is a score to settle.

Recently at Newlands we raised a total of $4,837.00 for The Miranda Foundation helping children with cancer. One hundred per cent of funds raised go to Monash Children’s Cancer Centre.
Sangwell House casual clothes day raised $1,273.00 and a whopping $3,564.00 from the sausage sizzle, 1,800 sausages were consumed.
We had so many hands on deck; Newlands staff, parents, Facilities staff, Senior School students, random people asking if they could assist when we looked a bit ‘sausaged out’. It was a wonderful team effort.
Throughout the holiday program and into the beginning of the new term, learning has centred around nature exploration, creativity and environmental consciousness.
Our children delved into the realm of sustainability by setting up and understanding the workings of worm farms, fostering an ethos of environmental responsibility. Nature walks provided opportunities for discovery and appreciation of the world around them with children noticing the colour and textural changes in the leaves due to the arrival of autumn. The children then utilised the vibrant autumn leaves collected to create artworks that celebrate the beauty of the season, which tied into stories read at group times.
We look forward to the continued opportunities for learning that the change in season brings.

BioEYES at Monash University is an award-winning, innovative, hands-on approach to teaching secondary students about science.
Over the course of a week, students nurture the development of zebrafish embryos, observing the transparent eggs change from a single-celled zygotes to free-swimming larvae.
Students develop their critical thinking skills and perform collaborative experiments as they study the lifespan and development of the zebrafish, anatomy and genetics.

Sam Shinsky and Moksh Goswami are two of over 35 recipients of the new OHA Relocation Bursary offered to the Class of 2023 who have relocated to secure a place in tertiary education. Both accepted an offer at the University of NSW in Sydney. Sam is studying a Bachelor of Commerce – Finance and Banking, and Moksh is studying Medicine.
Sam shared with us the following: “I absolutely love Sydney, and it was my first preference to do this degree at UNSW, as it’s one of the leading business schools in Asia/Pacific for my specific area of interest, Finance. I am hoping to capitalise on opportunities with this degree to continue and do further study overseas in either Hong Kong or the USA. I also have a part-time job at the Australian Turf Club as a Jockeys Room Attendant on race days, which has fitted in perfectly with my university schedule. The OHA Relocation Bursary was a tremendous help for me to get my room set up at college, from the basics for day to day living to a study setup that will help me make the absolute most out of my university studies. I can’t thank the OHA enough for such a great initiative!”

Last month, we celebrated the OHA Generations Breakfast at the Berwick campus. It was wonderful to see more than 60 grandparents, parents, students and staff come together and celebrate their history at Haileybury.
Families were treated to a delicious breakfast and family portrait while listening to the amazingly talented String Quartet. We were also delighted that our inaugural family Kahoot was well received and keenly contested!
We look forward to the next OHA Generations Breakfast at the Keysborough campus on Tuesday, 7 May 2024.

Haileybury is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of its students. As part of this commitment, the School has recently updated its Student Head Injury and Concussion Procedure to provide the highest level of care for students who have experienced head injuries that may have resulted in concussions.

The Haileybury College Year 12 Formal was held on the last evening of Term 1 at the Sofitel Melbourne. The event is always a social highlight for the students. Overseen by the Haileybury College Heads of House and members of the Senior School leadership team, the students enjoyed dinner and dancing in the ballroom, with the opportunity for photos with their peers and teachers throughout the evening.
It was a wonderful opportunity for the Year 12s to celebrate the end of their first term with the academic rigours of the past couple of months temporarily put aside. Instead, the very special friendships and camaraderie that are forged throughout their final year came to the fore. It was a fantastic way to begin the break and have a bit of fun as a cohort.
A range of students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have recently been announced as members of the 2024 Student Representative Council (SRC) for their year levels. While there are too many names to mention within this short newsletter, I would like to heartily congratulate those who put themselves forward for leadership positions and were then elected to these positions by their peers. Haileybury offers many opportunities for student leadership and supports those in leadership positions to work together to make the School a wonderful place to be.

The event will take place from 3:00 pm – 7:30 pm on Tuesday, 21 May in the Langford Pavilion and Music Annex. From the wonders of science to the enchanting realms of literature, the intricacies of mathematics to the vibrant tapestries of history and the creative arts – there are subjects for everyone and we invite you to speak directly with educators to ensure every subject you select heeds your needs and passions.

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding accomplishments of our talented students in the Haileybury Pipes & Drums at the Victorian Pipe Band Championships, which took place on Sunday, 24 March at the Melbourne Highland Games & Celtic Festival. These represent our best results at a Victorian Championship to date.
Haileybury #1 (A Band) had a tremendous day successfully defending their 2022 and 2023 state titles. Haileybury P&D are now Juvenile Novice A State Champions for the third year running edging out tough competition from interschool rivals, Scotch College #1. The band was also runner-up in Grade 3 behind strong opposition from the City of Melbourne Pipe Band, narrowly missing out by just two placings.
Haileybury #2 (B Band) also put on a great show, coming 3rd in the Juvenile Novice B Medley, 3rd in the Juvenile Novice B marches and gaining a credible 5th place in a highly contested Grade 4B section in a field of over 10 other bands.
Haileybury #3 (C Band) also achieved a commendable 5th place in the Juvenile Novice B Marches ahead of Scotch College #3 who came in 6th place.
We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.
Thank you to Dan Staley and Tom Perry for their hard work and for stepping up to ensure all three bands competed at full capacity. The competition was a huge success, and the collective effort of the entire team, including Rhonda, Sam, Ellen and Angus, was instrumental in our students’ achievements on the day. We could not have done it without you all.
We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to all parents/supporters and the Friends of the Pipes & Drums on the day for your unwavering encouragement and assistance with the bands.
Congratulations to Anay (Year 9) receiving 3rd place at such a young age and against seasoned competitors, including teams of university students, PhD candidates, aerospace engineers, and regolith specialists, showcases his innovative thinking and diligence in the recent Australian Rover Challenge. The Australian Rover Challenge (ARCh) is an annual robotics competition held by the University of Adelaide, where university students from across Australia and around the globe, battle it out in a full-scale Lunar mission, using semi-autonomous rovers that they have designed and built themselves.
Competitors showcase their skills in a custom built simulated lunar environment, and complete a range of tasks including navigation, resource, and construction. Unlike many other rover competitions across the world which focus on Martian exploration, the ARCh is focused specifically on completing tasks on a simulated Lunar surface.
We also congratulate Anay (Year 9) on his significant achievement in the ELO2 Big Dipper Regolith Acquisition Challenge, sponsored by the Australian Space Agency, is a major milestone in Australia's lunar exploration efforts. Competing individually, Anay designed "Venna," inspired by the Indigenous Australian name for the moon, earning third place and $975. Despite his young age of 13, he competed against teams of experts in aerospace and lunar regolith, showcasing his talent and potential to contribute significantly to space exploration.
Anay aspires to be a flight surgeon for astronauts and views this achievement as a stepping stone towards his goal. The One Giant Leap Foundation recognized his efforts and invited him to share his experiences and future goals in space innovation on their podcast, which was widely promoted on social media. Anay’s accomplishments reflect the values and spirit of the Haileybury community, and we are incredibly proud of him.
A reminder that in Term 2 students wear winter Uniform; however, we will have three weeks at the beginning of the term when students may continue to wear summer uniform.
