Year 12 Formal

The Haileybury College Year 12 Formal was held on the last evening of Term 1 at the Sofitel Melbourne. The event is always a social highlight for the students. Overseen by the Haileybury College Heads of House and members of the Senior School leadership team, the students enjoyed dinner and dancing in the ballroom, with the opportunity for photos with their peers and teachers throughout the evening.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the Year 12s to celebrate the end of their first term with the academic rigours of the past couple of months temporarily put aside. Instead, the very special friendships and camaraderie that are forged throughout their final year came to the fore. It was a fantastic way to begin the break and have a bit of fun as a cohort.

Student Representative Council

A range of students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have recently been announced as members of the 2024 Student Representative Council (SRC) for their year levels. While there are too many names to mention within this short newsletter, I would like to heartily congratulate those who put themselves forward for leadership positions and were then elected to these positions by their peers. Haileybury offers many opportunities for student leadership and supports those in leadership positions to work together to make the School a wonderful place to be.

Senior School Subject Expo

Attention Senior School students and families! We are delighted to announce the Senior School Subject Expo, live and in-person at Keysborough Senior School. The event will take place from 3:00 pm – 7:30 pm on Tuesday, 21 May in the Langford Pavilion and Music Annex. From the wonders of science to the enchanting realms of literature, the intricacies of mathematics to the vibrant tapestries of history and the creative arts – there are subjects for everyone and we invite you to speak directly with educators to ensure every subject you select heeds your needs and passions.

Haileybury Pipes & Drums

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding accomplishments of our talented students in the Haileybury Pipes & Drums at the Victorian Pipe Band Championships, which took place on Sunday, 24 March at the Melbourne Highland Games & Celtic Festival. These represent our best results at a Victorian Championship to date.

Haileybury #1 (A Band) had a tremendous day successfully defending their 2022 and 2023 state titles. Haileybury P&D are now Juvenile Novice A State Champions for the third year running edging out tough competition from interschool rivals, Scotch College #1. The band was also runner-up in Grade 3 behind strong opposition from the City of Melbourne Pipe Band, narrowly missing out by just two placings.

Haileybury #2 (B Band) also put on a great show, coming 3rd in the Juvenile Novice B Medley, 3rd in the Juvenile Novice B marches and gaining a credible 5th place in a highly contested Grade 4B section in a field of over 10 other bands.

Haileybury #3 (C Band) also achieved a commendable 5th place in the Juvenile Novice B Marches ahead of Scotch College #3 who came in 6th place.

We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.

Thank you to Dan Staley and Tom Perry for their hard work and for stepping up to ensure all three bands competed at full capacity. The competition was a huge success, and the collective effort of the entire team, including Rhonda, Sam, Ellen and Angus, was instrumental in our students’ achievements on the day. We could not have done it without you all.

We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to all parents/supporters and the Friends of the Pipes & Drums on the day for your unwavering encouragement and assistance with the bands.

Australian Rover Challenge

Congratulations to Anay (Year 9) receiving 3rd place at such a young age and against seasoned competitors, including teams of university students, PhD candidates, aerospace engineers, and regolith specialists, showcases his innovative thinking and diligence in the recent Australian Rover Challenge. The Australian Rover Challenge (ARCh) is an annual robotics competition held by the University of Adelaide, where university students from across Australia and around the globe, battle it out in a full-scale Lunar mission, using semi-autonomous rovers that they have designed and built themselves.

Competitors showcase their skills in a custom built simulated lunar environment, and complete a range of tasks including navigation, resource, and construction. Unlike many other rover competitions across the world which focus on Martian exploration, the ARCh is focused specifically on completing tasks on a simulated Lunar surface.

Australian Space Agency’s National Innovation Challenge

We also congratulate Anay (Year 9) on his significant achievement in the ELO2 Big Dipper Regolith Acquisition Challenge, sponsored by the Australian Space Agency, is a major milestone in Australia's lunar exploration efforts. Competing individually, Anay designed "Venna," inspired by the Indigenous Australian name for the moon, earning third place and $975. Despite his young age of 13, he competed against teams of experts in aerospace and lunar regolith, showcasing his talent and potential to contribute significantly to space exploration.

Anay aspires to be a flight surgeon for astronauts and views this achievement as a stepping stone towards his goal. The One Giant Leap Foundation recognized his efforts and invited him to share his experiences and future goals in space innovation on their podcast, which was widely promoted on social media. Anay’s accomplishments reflect the values and spirit of the Haileybury community, and we are incredibly proud of him.

Term 2

A reminder that in Term 2 students wear winter Uniform; however, we will have three weeks at the beginning of the term when students may continue to wear summer uniform.
