CEO | Principal's Report
Students are back on campus and the VCE examinations are now over halfway completed.
Online news from Haileybury
Students are back on campus and the VCE examinations are now over halfway completed.
It has been wonderful to have all year levels of students back on campus and the VCE examinations are now over halfway completed.
While the brilliant work of Haileybury teachers has kept students’ academic learning moving at the same pace in the virtual space as it would in the physical school, the casual social interaction has been greatly missed by students and staff. It has been a joy to simply watch people reacquaint themselves with friends, face-to-face.
We are very committed to returning as many experiential learning activities and cultural events to school life as soon as possible, and we will make this a strong focus of the rest of this year and 2022.
This year, a key focus of all we have done has been to get Year 12 students successfully through their examinations. The English examination on 27 October started the final examination schedule and I was thrilled with the attitude of the many students I spoke to as they emerged from the three-hour examination.
The experience set everyone up well for the rest of the examination period with the final paper on 17 November. This date, with the VCE successfully completed, is a key one for us to open up many more cross campus activities.
A note of thanks to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority who have been resolute over the past two years in ensuring that VCE examinations go ahead and that the assessment process is fair and equitable.
Just as we want our students well prepared for their formal studies, we also want them to be creative and enterprising in the way they look at the world and the opportunities that lie ahead.
All Haileybury Year 8 students have completed the second year of the Haileybury Start Up subject. I am really looking forward to being one of the judges at the Start Up Pitch Showcase this Wednesday. There are girls and boys teams from all four Haileybury Melbourne campuses and from Haileybury Rendall School Darwin who will be pitching to the judging panel.
It is enterprising students like this who will find solutions to many of the challenges ahead for our society.
I congratulate our Year 12 School Leaders who have been elected to their positions for 2022. I look forward to working with this impressive group of young women and men as they lead our great School next year.

CEO | Principal
After a couple of weeks of staggered, part-time onsite schooling, all our students are now back on campus daily. It has been wonderful to see our younger students farewelling parents at the gate before confidently entering the school grounds carrying their own bags.
Our older students in Years 7 and 8 have had time for Sport and socialising, but have been impressive in their focus and preparation for their current exam period.
On Thursday, 11 November, our Remembrance Day acknowledgment will see students across the School participating in an outdoor setting. The Castlefield community marks Remembrance Day in memory of those who have died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
Our staff and students will observe a minute’s silence and then students from Prep and Year 8 will place a cross in the ground to honour the young Haileyburians who served and lost their lives.
On Friday, 12 November, we will graduate the Year 8 class of 2021. We are proud of the students and their achievements, particularly their successes in overcoming the challenges of this year. We wish them every success as they begin their time in Pre-Senior from Monday, 15 November.
Please note that Up Day—the 2021 Orientation Day—has been moved to Friday, 3 December for our current Prep to Year 6 students.
Students can pack away their school uniform for the day and attend in casual sport clothes with runners. They spend the day in their year level for 2022, meet their teachers, visit homerooms and can say hello to their new classmates in preparation for next year.
It is wonderful to have our ELC students back together and onsite again. There have been many joyous moments as children reconnect with friends, educators and rediscover their classrooms and learning spaces.
This is what some of our students had to say about being back:
“Lockdown’s over, everyone is back at school.”
“I’m happy because we are all back.”
“It feels very good because I love everyone so much.”
“Because we get to play and learn together.”
We have been keeping an eye on the tawny frogmouths who took up residence close to the School. Last term, the two birds had made a home together in a tree near Villeroy St. This term, we find them nesting in the peppercorn tree in the Junior School playground.
It is tricky to see them as they are well camouflaged, but with perseverance you can spot them nestled among the branches and leaves.
Our children have shown keen interest in other local birds, too. They’ve been watching live footage of the falcons at 367 Collins St in the city and they’ve enjoyed the Aussie Backyard Bird Count during National Bird Week. Our Pre-Preps are planting a bird garden to attract more birds to their outdoor environment, too.
The ELC has some resident stick insects and recently the children have been observing the life cycle of silkworms, too. The children are encouraged to look closely at the natural world around them and to wonder, question, discover, interpret and show their respect for the creatures we share this land with.
The great new rope climbing playground has been put to good use as the students returned to campus. Olivia loved testing her skills in getting all the way to the top!
Along with a new playground, we also have a new classmate.
Meet Utah! He belongs to Jodie McInnes and is a five-month-old golden retriever. Just like his surf-loving namesake, Johnny Utah, he is loyal and loves the water! Utah is in training with Therapy Animals Australia to become our dog in school. He will be on hand to accept pats and to work with children in their classrooms.
As the weather warms up, please remember our ‘No hat, no play’ policy for Terms 4 and 1. Haileybury black bucket-style or broad-brimmed hats must be worn during recess, lunch and Physical Education classes.
Please put roll-on sunscreen in your child’s bag too so they can reapply during the day and water bottles are also essential. Due to government restrictions, bubbler taps are still locked off, however, children can access taps to refill their water bottle.
Blazers are not required with the Junior School summer uniform—they can be left in the cupboard until Term 2. A reminder to name all items too, please. At the end of each term, the lost property chests are full to overflowing with unnamed hats, jumpers and lunchboxes!
While we’re yet to welcome our new external 2022 Preps onsite, our ELC students have begun their transition to Prep. During a busy day they were introduced to our tawny frogmouth birds in East Quad and they spent some time in the Prep classrooms.
Working on their fine motor skills, they tore paper and then used the pieces to create a little chick to take home. We look forward to welcoming all the children joining us from other kinders and ELCs as soon as restrictions allow.
In the many weeks that our students have been remote learning, our beautiful school grounds have become a little like a wildlife park. Tawny frogmouths now preside over Junior School, a growing family of swallows has taken up residence in Girls Middle School and a flock of ducks regularly bathe on the ovals and use the driveway as their personal runway.
However, our avian friends have learned quickly that they must share the space once more as our eager students filter back through the gates to face-to-face learning and long-awaited reunions.
It has been a delight to see our classrooms and grounds buzzing with energy. Our students are reconnecting with friends and teachers and our young community is again demonstrating a commitment to their learning and their unwavering resilience in the face of lockdowns.
As Year 7 and 8 students complete their exams we continue to reinforce the importance of positive study habits, consolidating knowledge and skills through the exam process and using feedback to reflect on their learning and experience.
This is also the time to balance good sleep habits, stay hydrated and to enjoy some much-needed sunshine. We wish students all the best as they embark on the next few weeks.
A wonderful Term 4 awaits us all and we look forward to the weeks ahead with students back on campus.

It’s wonderful to see some of the restrictions on movement easing and the return of students to school grounds. As we rapidly approach the next restrictions milestone, HPFC will be able to resume in-person activities. We are looking forward to hosting in-person events shortly.
We are happy to advise that the Secondhand Uniform Shop has reopened.
Under current government restrictions, parents are not permitted to come onsite. Instead, we ask that you please come to the Rouen Street gate and contact Mark Newby to place your order, pay for and collect your uniforms.

It is my great pleasure to announce that Mrs Qi (Cathy) Zhengyang has been appointed as the new Head of Senior School at Haileybury Tianjin (HIST).
Cathy graduated from the English Department of Hebei University of Technology and later studied at Tianjin Normal University where she completed a Master's degree in English Language and English Literature.
Cathy has 12 years of rich experience in school management within international education. She has worked as an English teacher and as a director of English teaching and research groups. She has experience with university pathways, as an examination assessor and has worked in various principal assistant departments.
During her career, she has held positions at Tianjin No. 2 High School in its Cambridge International Examination Centre and worked at Tianjin University as Director of the A-Level Education International Centre. During her time there, Cathy made important contributions to the development and growth of A-level courses in Tianjin. In 2020, she won the 10-year Cambridge School Award on behalf of the school in Shanghai.
Cathy has just finished her tenure as Principal of Fayao School where she was responsible for the A-Level Program development, including student recruitment, staff induction, teaching, welfare management and university applications.
She is a qualified examiner of Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel, where she has organised official A-Level examinations and Cambridge examinations for 1,200 students. Furthermore, Cathy has taken part in oral Cambridge IGCSE English examinations and Edexcel Chinese oral examinations.
Cathy was recently invited to be a judge and tutor in a program designed to discover young English drama talent by Tianjin Science, Technology and Education Television.
The new Head of Senior School believes that the purpose of education is to cultivate lifelong learners. They should have self-confidence, a sense of responsibility and reflect on themselves often. She says the key responsibility of teachers is to help students establish goals and cultivate a sense of happiness and achievement that helps them reach their dream universities.
I look forward to Cathy integrating her rich teaching and management experiences into Haileybury Tianjin. We look forward to her working with Senior School staff to cultivate students' international vision and critical thinking, to help them adapt to the changing world and become international talents, and help them achieve excellent academic results.
Our Haileybury community wishes Cathy every success in her work at Haileybury Tianjin.

International Principal, HIST
I am confident to say that our students have never been so pleased to be back at school and our staff were certainly thrilled to see them in real life. The students are taller, their hair is longer and their smiles are wider!
I want to thank our staff for their hard work, commitment to every student and brilliant remote classroom teaching. I thank our parents for their endless support, kindness and coffees for staff—we are so grateful.
I congratulate our students on staying focused on the goal of growing kind hearts and sharp minds, and for continuing to be tenacious and hardworking as we cultivate our mindset and skillset.
We will be sure to enjoy the rest of Term 4 at City campus—back together once more.
In 2021, Haileybury City is pleased that five students have been awarded bursaries for their Science Talent Search projects. The Science Talent Search is an annual competition open to all students from Junior School to Senior School.
Each year, it is based on a different theme and this year it was ‘Food—different by design’, which matched our STEM Week theme.
The Science Talent Search is a great competition as it allows students to share their passion for Science and they can present their work in a variety of ways—it might be creative writing, a scientific poster, a computer program or a working model.
This year, 30 students from City campus entered projects. These included a working model of a windmill, a computer program on eating choices and a creative writing piece called Climate Change and our Food Footprint.
We are pleased to congratulate the following students on being awarded a bursary:
I encourage all our budding scientists to consider entering in 2022.
Each and every day in ELC, there are opportunities for incidental and intentional teaching of Literacy to children. During Semester 2, children in Reception have been introduced to letter sounds through synthetic phonics. A foundation for reading, letter sounds have been explored in a fun and interactive way through songs, actions, stories and puppets.
Meanwhile, Pre-Prep children have scaffolded further learning with our Take-home Reader Program. Children’s confidence in their literary development is evident in the ways children incorporate reading and writing into interactive play with their peers.
We are mindful of the impact of COVID-19 restrictions during 2021, with many celebrations cancelled or postponed. Magical moments to celebrate provide opportunities for children to connect, share joy and make lasting memories.
So, we are very excited about our ELC Birthday Party on Thursday, 25 November. We will celebrate everyone’s birthday in the ELC with games, dancing and party bags.
In the coming weeks, children will assist us to plan and prepare for the party and we look forward to sharing lots of news about the event of the ELC year! Happy birthday to one and all…
Our Junior School students were thrilled to return to on-campus learning. We could see them smiling from behind their masks as they interacted with their teachers and peers. Our students demonstrated their ability to ‘Care, Learn and Play’ as our Junior School students do. Speaking to each other kindly and building respectful relationships were evident.
In the classroom, there was plenty of discussion, focus and high expectations. At break times, the children enthusiastically played with their peers and enjoyed themselves across all our play spaces.
Here’s what some of our students had to say about being back on campus:
Dimitri Macris (Year 3)
I really liked being back on campus because you’re in a totally different building and you get to transition between rooms and classes. Just walking around gives you exercise. Plus, you can’t play tag on Zoom or hide and seek! You can be active with your friends as opposed to playing online.
Alyssa Nye (Prep)
It’s great because we get to play at recess and lunch outside. I also have liked doing Maths in the classroom because sometimes you need help from your teacher and she is right there.
Holly Biasin (Prep)
I’ve enjoyed playing ‘cats’ with my friends. Also, we get to sit on the mat and learn which is fun.
Callum Winkett (Year 4)
Seeing everybody has been fun. In the classroom, we can do more things like hands-on activities together. Being able to move around a lot more has been tiring but good.
Our Years 7 and 8 students completed their English exam. We are so proud of how they approached these exams with tenacity and diligence. Students made the most of the revision period, attending Help Desk and completing revision booklets and practice exams.
We wish students all the best for the remaining exams and are looking forward to the upcoming Head of School days.
Farewell Year 8 Leaders
As their time comes to a close, we would like to thank our Year 8 leaders for their contribution to Middle School. As we connected face-to-face and welcomed everyone back on campus, these students have continued to be fine examples for our young people in Years 5, 6 and 7.
We wish them all the best as they transition to Senior School and look forward to them visiting us and maintaining connections in the Middle School.
Our Boys and Girls Nights In are fast approaching and although they will look a little different this year, they will be a wonderful opportunity to spend some overdue time together.

Caroline Merrick
Head of City
After a long and extended time in lockdown, it is wonderful to see our students enjoying their return to City campus. They are relishing spending time in person catching up with their friends and teachers and getting back into the rhythm of school life.
As we head into the last part of Term 4, we wish our students preparing for their final assessments and end-of-year exams all the very best.
The HPF City AGM will be held on Tuesday, 9 November at 7.30 pm via Zoom.
Nominations are open to join the HPF City. If you would like to consider joining as a Social Representative or member of the Executive Committee, all details and forms can be found in the myHaileybury app. The HPF City provides opportunities to meet new parents and friends across the School and work in partnership.
Our much-anticipated HPF City Cocktail Party—rescheduled for the third time—has been cancelled again. We look forward to running our Cocktail Party in 2022.
A very big ‘thank you’ to the 2021 HPF City Executive and Social Representatives for all their hard work, generosity and energy during a year where face-to-face opportunities and events were very limited. Despite this, we have worked hard and cohesively and it has been a pleasure.
To all our families at City, your support and generosity have been inspiring. Thank you. We cannot achieve our goals without you.

Families Join Graduation Celebration
It was wonderful to celebrate the success of our Year 12 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students who graduated from Haileybury Rendall School at the special Graduation Assembly in our Dumabudla Centre on Thursday, 21 October.
The occasion was shared with parents and guardians who witnessed each member of the Class of 2021 receive their graduation certificate. We also live-streamed the Graduation and many families from remote communities and others from across the country enjoyed this.
Many of these students began their VCE examinations on Wednesday, 27 October and we wish them the very best.
We look forward to meeting again for the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner on Thursday, 18 November.
NAPLAN Results Show Learning Growth
The 2021 NAPLAN results for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 were sent to schools this week by the Northern Territory Government and they have been sent on to our families.
We were thrilled that our results showed strong learning growth across all indicators at all year levels. The strong improvement at all year levels is a tremendous endorsement of our dedicated and talented staff and the great work ethic of our students.
General Knowledge and Generous Bidding
The Dumabudla Centre was bustling with about 80 parents, friends and staff for our very first Parent Trivia and Auction Evening on Friday, 15 October. Interesting knowledge was shared and there was some generous bidding on a range of auction items. Our highly entertaining quizmaster was a great addition to the evening and doubled as our auctioneer.
The aim of the night was to raise funds to resurface our popular but well-worn covered gymnasium court. This goal was greatly assisted by an anonymous family who offered to donate the entire work. The rest of the night raised funds which will be used to buy new sport gear for students to use on the new court.

How wonderful it has been to have students from all year levels back onsite! For some students, there was some anxiety about returning, but very quickly these feelings eased as the students re-connected with friends and teachers. Others felt relieved and excited that their world was returning to something more familiar and normal and they could not wait to be back.
All students, parents and staff have been through another very difficult and uncertain time and I thank you all for the way you have continued on with resilience and hope.
Our Year 5/6 Chess Team recently competed in the online State Finals. I am delighted to let you know they placed second in the state!
Congratulations to Sanjar Asad, Daiwei Qin, Vinu Pirapakaran, Aahil Fazlaan, Eshan Nakarmi, Jaiden Cooray, Seyara Munasinghe, Nicholas Tomah, Ryley Dang, Jerry Liao, Vaiga Saynthan and Sathisha Silva.
In addition to the impressive performance of the team, Sanjar Asad achieved sixth place in the state and Ryley Dang was ranked second. This is a remarkable achievement and we are incredibly proud of both boys and of the team.
How wonderful it is to be back together again. Children beamed with excitement as they entered the ELC after such a long absence. Reconnecting with each other and staff is a big focus for us this term. We also understand this is also a time of some anxiety for some children and families.
It is important to reflect and remember that the world around us has undergone a significant change and, as we reopen, we will focus on re-establishing routine and connection for children and families to enable them to feel safe and secure in their environment.
Each classroom has been set up to assist in this transition with extra time given to social interactions and discussions with children on their thoughts and feelings. It is important we focus on the positives during this time and have a wonderful Term 4 together.
We are so excited to have all year levels back onsite. Listening to the playground noise and seeing students in their classroom was exactly what we needed and what we have been looking forward to for so long!
With restrictions still in place, all assemblies and the Junior School Graduation will be held online. Details will be put on the myHaileybury app in the near future.
To support the teaching of the Health Curriculum in 2021, Sex Education Australia will be delivering a program called Living and Growing to our Year 4 students. The three-week program helps schools implement parts of the Health Curriculum including the physical, social and emotional changes that are part of puberty. The approach to these topics will be age-appropriate, simple, straightforward and sensitive.
There has been a sense of excitement, happiness and relief as Middle School students eased back to school over the past week. To see friends and spend time in the classroom again gave our boys and girls the lift they needed to get through to the end of the online program. Students were greeted by excited teachers and a small Welcome Backpack.

Revision books have been released and all Years 7 and 8 students have completed a study skills session supported by an extensive array of materials and advice on CANVAS as they prepare for exams.
Help Desk will run for exam preparation each afternoon and Thursday mornings in the lead-up to exams which begin on Friday, 5 November.
We will farewell our Year 8 students on Friday, 12 November—their last day in Middle School. Students will participate in a student-only Graduation Ceremony followed by a Middle School Picnic and our annual Middle School Colour Run.
We look forward to making their last day in Middle School memorable after a tough 18 months.

We are pleased to finally have all students back on campus again. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation, kindness and understanding during the staggered return to classes.
On a practical note, it has been some time since students’ medical details have been updated. As we return to campus, it is vital that all medical details are up-to-date, so families are requested to review and update their children’s information via Consent2Go.
As part of the medical details update, we will be asking for confirmation of vaccination status of our students aged 12 years and older. This is currently an optional field within the form, however, we strongly encourage families to provide this information in preparation for external events which may require confirmation of vaccination status.
Orientation Day will be held on Friday, 3 December. Details will be communicated via the myHaileybury app very soon.
Thank you to our families who have taken up the offer of two parenting programs during Term 4 from our team of psychologists. All places have now been filled. These programs 1‐2‐3 Magic® and Emotion Coaching (ELC to Year 6 ) and Engaging Adolescents (5 to 8) will be offered to parents in 2022.
Educators are working on the upcoming Transition Learning and Development Statements for Pre-Prep children. This document summarises children’s learning and development and highlights each child’s approaches to learning, abilities and interests. It also indicates how the child can be supported to continue learning as they enter their next year of schooling.
These documents are passed on to the children’s 2022 teacher to help them to get to know each child and plan appropriate learning and teaching programs. Parents will be invited to contribute as the information shared between parents, the ELC and School creates the best starting point for the next phase of a child’s learning journey.
An individual link will be provided to parents to access the Statement.
We ask that all Reception children with medical conditions that require an Action Plan who are attending the ELC in 2022 have a recently updated Plan. Parents can upload the Plan onto Consent2Go so it is available to school nurses and educators.
We would like to conclude our social justice fundraising efforts for Monash Children’s Centre with an auction of an art canvas or piece of art created collaboratively by the children. Each class has a different artwork to be auctioned. The artwork will be displayed at the entrances of the ELC and parents are invited to make a bid. The funds will be added to the total so far raised this year.
Junior School students have eased back into normal classroom routines. The focus switched to setting up their regular learning books instead of working from booklets and paying attention to handwriting again. They have thoroughly enjoyed seeing their friends and playing in the playground.
A team of four Year 8 Newlands Girls (Ellie Gianakis, Brooke Lew, Ruby Molnar
and Zoe Berends) are the Under 16s State Winners in the largest national youth entrepreneurship competition—First Pitch for Kids 2021 (https://www.firstpitch.com.au/).
The girls were offered an opportunity to enter their Startup pitch into this competition late last term. Now they are through to the National Finals with a chance to win $2,000.
This is an amazing achievement and it wouldn’t have happened without great support and encouragement from their Startup teacher, Mr Ben Ashkanazi. Well done to the whole team and good luck for the Nationals!
Some creative thinkers have reached the National Final of the Future Problem Solving competition, placing themselves in the top tier of the teams in their particular division. The following Newlands students attended the Final on 15 and 16 October.
Global Issues problem solving team:
Harrison Green, Tim Dang, Judy Bo, Vinay Raghavan (Year 8)
Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) individual entrant: Anay Ashwin (Year 6).
Scenario writers:
Anay Ashwin (Year 6 ) The Voice of Mars
Grace van Haaster (Year 8) Practice Makes Perfect.
Grace van Haaster won first place in the Scenario Writing competition and Anay Ashwin won first place in the Individual Global Issues Problem Solving competition. The International Competition is in 2022 at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. We wish them all the best.

I would like to congratulate our Year 12s who have prevailed in such difficult circumstances this year. We have been so impressed by their resilience and flexibility and we are very, very proud of them.
A great day was had by all on Friday, 15 October when we had food trucks and speeches from our Captains to end the cohort’s classes at school. We all wish them the very best for their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) examinations that have commenced.
A degree of encouragement from parents is always useful in helping students prepare for examinations; however, it is important to balance this with the message that we will support them if things do not go as planned. If you have any concerns about your son or daughter either pre- or post-examination, please contact their relevant Head of House to discuss the range of supports that Haileybury can offer.
The Year 12 Leaders for the 2022 school year were announced last Friday. The process used to elect our School Leaders is a democratic one that sees students and staff voting for those students they believe to be most worthy to lead Haileybury.
I am constantly amazed at just how seriously our students take this power to vote and am equally impressed that they make such good choices year in, year out. I know that Ms Helen Wadden (Head of Senior Girls) and Mr Graham Leys (Head of Senior Boys) are particularly pleased with the group of School Captains, Senior Prefects, House Captains, Prefects and House Vice Captains elected to these positions for 2022.
We cannot wait to begin working with this team of student leaders to make next year exceptional. I have listed those students elected to School Captain, School Vice Captain and School Sport Captain.

Melissa Nguyen (Year 9) is running a cancer awareness fundraiser on National Bandana Day for a charity called Canteen. The charity supports young people impacted by cancer. Mel is dealing with this in her own family and has chosen to share her story with our students and the Middle School while raising money for Canteen.
Grand Finals galore was the order of the day for the Pre-Senior Keysborough students. Throughout lockdown many challenges were completed and so our first day back was the perfect opportunity to compete in the Grand Finals.
Students competed in our Grand Final Kahoot Challenge—well Done 9.2 and 9B—and a range of Grand Final Tutor Challenges from Push-Ups to Paper Planes to Card Houses! Winners were grinners for our Retro Tuesday held online, with prizes for Retro Dress Ups, Retro Toasties and Retro Computer Games.
The sunshine was on our side as students spent the afternoon playing sport and enjoying some friendly banter and laughs. Nothing replaces the chatter around Pre-Senior and it is pure joy to see the students reconnect.
It was with much excitement that the Pre-Senior Berwick students returned to school on Tuesday, 26 October. A fun day was had at the Berwick campus reconnecting with peers, all while getting prepared for the long-awaited upcoming Options and Expeditions.
A morning tea was organised by the SRC and was an opportunity for Mr Peter Ford, Head of Senior School (Berwick), to welcome the group back to school. Both the girls and boys Pre-Senior groups joined forces in periods 7 and 8 and participated in a volleyball round-robin. A great deal of fun was had by all and the sun shining made for a perfect return.
Our Pre-Senior City students started the day with hot jam doughnuts fresh from Queen Victoria Market followed by preparation sessions for Options and Expeditions. We then tested our creative skills, stitching felt Christmas decorations for the City Christmas Tree—it’s never too early for Christmas.
The weather was spectacular for our Level 10 Pizza Lunch. We then had a relaxing afternoon of board games, movies and basketball at the Inside Out courts. The Pre-Seniors were ecstatic to finally see all their peers face-to-face and it was lovely to hear the upper floors of City abuzz with students once again.
Our Pre-Senior Brighton students spent the day celebrating their return to campus by participating in a scavenger hunt and Ultimate Frisbee challenge.
Congratulations to Charlie Bamford (Year 10) on completing the Bronze level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The award gave Charlie something rewarding to focus on during lockdowns and saw him take part in sport and community service activities and learn a new skill. The highlight of the award was undoubtedly the Eildon expedition, which was hard but very rewarding. Charlie encourages everyone to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Performance examinations are well and truly over and now our focus turns to theory.
Luckily, most performance-based subjects are assessed late in the written examination period, so there will be plenty of opportunity to work with Senior students as they revise. This year, the effectiveness of the revision period has been very good with students able to ‘Zoom in’ on a daily basis for one-on-one sessions or as a class.
As we come close to the start of the new school year on 15 November, our attention inevitably turns to productions. There is a lot on offer early next year, particularly for those in the Senior School.
Auditions for the Year 10 Play, Senior Musical and the new Senior City Play will be held during Term 1A. Details and rights are being finalised with an announcement to follow. Suffice to say there is plenty on offer in 2022.

As students return to face-to-face tuition, the Music Department has been busily preparing for a full return to onsite lessons. We’ve also been exploring performance opportunities for instrumental music students as they resume ensemble rehearsals this week.
Fingers crossed that ensembles will be able to perform live before the end of the year!
As we work towards this, I would ask families to carefully monitor messages about rehearsal times. Getting back to full rehearsals with full attendance will be crucial in preparing for hoped-for performances.
For those families who have been waiting to submit an application to begin instrumental music lessons, now is a perfect time to start lessons or to book a place for next year. For many students, having face-to-face music lessons this term before taking an instrument home for the extended Christmas break will put them in a great place for 2022.

Media focuses on storytelling in a range of different forms including short film, photography and print. This year, our students— like Georgia Campbell (Year 11)—told many relevant and engaging stories.
Georgia’s work conveys the message that no matter how hard we try to win, we can still lose and, although this may feel like failure, it’s still an achievement to make it to the race at all. Georgia’s photographic production is called One Shot.

Other stories—such as Selena Shi’s (Year 12)—were about the effect of our decisions on our planet and climate change. Selena produced a set of beautiful images that combined photography and digital illustration in a highly poetic piece called Neo, the Future.

Through their generosity and ongoing support and commitment, two groups within the Haileybury community have proven to be significant allies of the Haileybury Foundation.
Members of the 1892 Circle now number close to 80. They contribute annually to a scholarship and qualify as members through their annual contribution of $500 or more over a period of three years. Membership is also attained if a pledge is provided to the Foundation office to make this commitment over a three-year period.
Members of the 1892 Circle include parents, alumni, past parents and staff.
Members of the Winged Heart Society will meet for the first time in-person at a luncheon at the Brighton campus on Thursday, 11 November. Winged Heart Society members have made a commitment to include Haileybury in their will. Membership is automatic once the Foundation office is advised of the inclusion of the School in the will.
We have received two bequests this year and their impact has been significant, resulting in two students joining Haileybury in 2022 in receipt of Foundation Scholarships.
Please do not hesitate to contact Russell Davidson if you wish to enquire about the above groups.
Donations to Haileybury Foundation continue to stream in. Our students are incredibly fortunate to be in receipt of such a high-quality education that would otherwise be out of reach.
All gifts to Haileybury Foundation are tax deductible. Our donors are having enormous impact and we have been delighted with the involvement of our community—from past parents, alumni and staff to current parents and former staff.
Donations can be made at https://www.haileybury.com.au/giving.
Thank you.

Phylisia Palipuaminni (OH 2019) graduated from Haileybury Rendall School (HRS) and is an amazing and inspiring young lady. She is one of the first Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) graduates from HRS and is incredibly proud of being the first in her family to graduate Year 12.
During her time at Haileybury, Phylisia worked closely with Donna Clemmens, Program Coordinator from the Stars Foundation. The Stars Foundation offers high-quality, in-school mentoring and support programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls in the Northern Territory.
These dedicated and experienced full-time, onsite mentors help girls to gain the skills they need to develop resilience and support their own wellbeing, which leads to increased social connection, community participation and self-confidence.
Phylisia returned to Haileybury for the first time since graduating with a massive smile and commented that returning gave her ‘goosebumps’. It’s no surprise then that Phylisia and Donna have a very special relationship!
Phylisia was born in Darwin, hails from Milikapiti (Snake Bay), Tiwi Islands, and currently lives in town with her auntie and cousins. Before boarding at Haileybury, Phylisia attended boarding school at Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville, near Melbourne, for a few years. She then returned home for a year after missing her family. Being surrounded and supported by family and friends is incredibly important to her.
Haileybury staff and Stars members were wonderful mentors as Phylisia pondered plans for 2020. Maths, English and Physical Education were her favourite subjects at school, which swayed her to study Sport and Recreation at Charles Darwin University. She was able to live and study in Darwin with support from the Indigenous Youth Mobility Program (IYMP).
Phylisia also studied Childcare and gained work experience at Murraya Children’s Centre, which cemented her love of children and helping others. She was thrilled to gain a permanent full-time role at Henbury School working with children with disabilities and high needs.
“It’s a good job and I feel blessed!” she humbly commented.
Donna says she is proud of Phylisia for finishing Year 12.
“It’s hard when you come from a remote community, far away from family. There were times when she was homesick but she kept going and seeing it through. I’m super proud of the work she’s doing now, working with young children with special needs. She has hit the ground running! Phylisia did a few different things after school but now has found something she loves and is good at.”
Phylisia is a wonderful mentor to her siblings, always encouraging them to go to school. She tells them that ‘Education is the key to having a job’. During her time at school, she would trace her hand to reinforce the importance of the key areas in her life: education, sport, family and friends.
In 2015, Phylisia was one of 12 Indigenous students chosen by Robert De Castella to travel to the United States and run in the marathon. In the five-kilometre event, Phylisia came an impressive second in her age group. It was one of the greatest experiences of her life and she loved touring the massive cities of New York, Los Angeles and Washington.
In her spare time now, Phylisia loves traditional art painting, playing sport—especially soccer and football—which is no surprise given she is related to Cyril Rioli and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti!
You are a delightful and inspiring young lady, Phylisia, and we loved hearing your story!

Zac Grech (Year 10) has been named in the Cricket Australia Indoor Cricket 21 and Under Men’s summer training squad. As one of an elite group of athletes selected, he will be provided with opportunities to develop his game ahead of the 2022 calendar of indoor cricket.
It is a superb achievement, especially considering Zac is still only 16 years old and in Year 10. Congratulations, Zac.
All is in readiness to begin training and trialling for the Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) and Associated Grammar Schools Victoria (AGSV) summer season to commence in 2022. Practice games and training clinics will be conducted for all sports to ensure our students are fully prepared for the long-awaited summer season. Confirmation of schedules will be distributed shortly.

Online news from Haileybury

Toby Coutts (Year 12) connected street culture and mental health in a photography production called Absent at Dusk, which is an advertising campaign for his clothing brand.

In her short film called Crinkle, Courtney de Fries (Year 12) explored ‘toxic masculinity’ through a father/son relationship set within the culture of Australian Rules football.
