A Good Friday thank you

A big thank you to the HPFK for all their wonderful hard work in organising the annual Good Friday Appeal Easter Raffle. This year our Newlands community raised a much needed $2,654 for this great cause. This is such a tremendous effort for all involved and we should be very proud.

Our final Assembly was the perfect opportunity to present these amazing baskets and there were plenty of smiles on the faces of those students lucky enough to win. We also farewelled Leanne Sullivan after 18 years of exceptional service to the School.

The Gadsden Pavilion nears completion

Our Gadsden Pavilion is almost completed and will be fully operational by the middle of May. This state-of-the-art facility will provide our students and staff with classrooms, office spaces, training areas, a kitchen, storage facilities and multiple changerooms.

On the second level, a wide balcony overlooks the playing fields, and the three upstairs classrooms can open into one room, providing an exceptional multi-purpose space that will be ideal for Haileybury events.

With the construction zones being removed, ample parking places will again be available at the rear of the Fisher Oval. We thank families for their patience during the building project and we now encourage parents to park at the rear of the Fisher Oval during pick up and drop off times.

We also remind parents not to park near crossings for safety reasons.

Mobile Muster

Mobile Muster keeps recyclable, reusable and repairable electronics out of landfill.

There will be a collection box at Newlands Resource Centre where you can donate old mobile phones, chargers and modems.

For every item you donate, your name will go into a raffle to win one of several prizes. Please also ask family and friends if they have any mobiles or other electronics that they no longer need and recycle them, rather than throwing them away.

Winter uniform

As we now move into autumn and winter months, students are expected to wear the full winter uniform. All students are to wear blazers to and from school. Please note, the Uniform Shop has a range of winter garments. We ask families to purchase these items rather than students wearing items from home, like beanies and puffer jackets.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Term 2 Parent–Teacher Interviews will be held on Monday, 1 and Wednesday, 3 May.

The booking portal will open on Monday, 24 April.

Early Learning Centre

ELC Perceptual Motor Program

The Perceptual Motor Program is a series of experiences where children engage in gross motor play activities to develop skills such as eye tracking, eye-hand coordination, eye-foot coordination, balance and coordination. Children love the program and are always eager to participate.

The riders are three-wheeled for safety and the program focuses on balance, skill acquisition, confidence and coordination. This program is unique to Haileybury and therefore Newlands ELC is the only early years centre in Australia to offer the program.

Active April

Get Active Victoria is a program promoted by the state government to encourage all Victorians to engage in physical activity each day.

During the school holidays, many families living close to the ELC choose to walk or ride a bike or a scooter to the ELC. Opportunities to explore the Keysborough ovals and playgrounds were taken up by the children and their educators during the holiday program. Year 4 camp

The recent Year 4 camp at Portsea brought thrilling challenges like the flying fox, high ropes course and giant swing, some of which were completed at night. Students also built sturdy huts and put them to the waterproof test, getting quite wet in the process.

Students had fun making keepsake keyrings with Jane Pooley in the art room and explored old army bunkers. Spending time with friends in the cabins and sharing funny stories and jokes was a favourite activity for many.

The camp was a time for fun and adventure and taught valuable life skills such as teamwork and leadership.

Mother’s Day celebrations

We welcome all Junior School mothers and special friends to join us for afternoon tea and activities to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Silver for Julia

Congratulations to Julia Baldy (Year 5) who achieved a gold medal in race walking at the regional Little Athletics competition. This qualified her to compete in the Victorian State Track and Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium where she achieved a silver medal.

Thank you, Zachary Cheng

In 2022, while in Year 7, Zachary Cheng (Year 8) won his age division at the Prime Minister’s National Spelling Bee. As part of his prize, the Newlands Resource Centre was gifted $1,000 to purchase books for the library. A selection of non-fiction books and novels was purchased and has been added to the Newlands Library collection.

Smoothie Bar incursion

Early in Term 2, Year 6 students will be involved in a full day incursion as an introduction to their next Thrive unit on Financial Literacy. In this hands-on and flavoursome incursion, students embark on a quest to create a smoothie product and a marketing campaign that promotes health and wellness in their community.

Working in teams, students discover what it takes to become a business owner. They investigate the preferences of their target market, design a product and learn about cost and profit before trialling their delicious and nutritious blends.

Once they have the ultimate smoothie recipe, students use their digital literacy and design skills to create marketing materials to promote their product and brand.

Understanding Consent webinar

This session will be run by Elephant Ed, a leading education provider endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner. This webinar is designed specifically for parents or carers with students in Years 7 and 8 to support their child in building respectful relationships.
