Inside every adolescent brain, 86 billion neurons connect and collide to produce the most frustrating, chaotic and exhilarating changes. Brainstorm is a unique theatrical investigation into how the teenage brain works and why it is designed by evolution to be the way it is.
The play’s script comes with some structure but the content and dialogue have been developed by Jane Marshall and the City student cast to provide insights into the contemporary teenage experience.
Performed at the iconic Chapel Off Chapel, this promises to be a theatrical experience to remember. The 2022 City play sold out within days, so get in quick to avoid disappointment.
Top class success!
Top Class 2023 is a series of concerts featuring outstanding students who completed VCE Performing Arts subjects. Two students from Haileybury Dance and Theatre programs have been accepted into the 2023 Top Class Season at the Recital Centre and Malthouse Theatre in March.
In total, seven of our theatre, drama and dance students were invited to audition after achieving an A+ in their performance exam. We are very proud of our high achieving and creative students.
In VCE Dance, students choreograph, refine and perform two solo works that are presented to a panel of assessors and each contributes 25% of their total study score. The first solo work that students develop is a skills-based solo that showcases a dancer’s physical skills and ability to manipulate time, shape and energy throughout their choreography.
Congratulations to Michaela Davidson for achieving a perfect score for her 2022 skills-based solo and for being invited to perform at Top Class on Tuesday, 7 March at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
In VCE Theatre Studies, Enya Lucas will present her monologue from Our Country’s Good at Malthouse Theatre on Thursday, 16 March. Each student develops a six-minute monologue and two-minute interpretation statement. Enya chose to create a bold and imaginative interpretation inspired by the experience of convict women in 1788 and by the contemporary work of Emily Goddard, an Australian writer and performer.

A dazzling display
Being a participant in music making is a truly special experience. It is a form of self-expression that allows the individual to connect with their emotions, creativity and with others in a unique way. The pathway to creating high quality music is a journey that requires dedication, patience and flair. However, the result of prolonged creative and technical growth is always worth it when a performance comes to life and is shared and celebrated with an audience.
Last Monday, the Performing and Visual Arts were celebrated at Haileybury’s inaugural Haileybury Top Class. Drawing on the concept of the VCAA Season of Excellence Series, which recognises the most outstanding work from dance, drama, music and the Visual Arts, Haileybury Top Class showcased some of the best VCE work from our Visual and Performing Arts students in the 2022 VCE.
The audience was dazzled by the skill and talent on display during the 80-minute experience.
The Arts have the power to move us, to evoke memories and to connect us with one another. Being an active participant in the Arts is a way to bring those feelings and experiences to life, and to share them.
It’s a privilege to be part of that at Haileybury and it is something to be celebrated and cherished. As educators, we are fortunate to have front row seats and to see amazing talent emerge before our eyes and ears.

Visual Arts
A celebration of talent
The inaugural Top Class evening showcase was an inspiring and joyous celebration of the incredible talent of our 2022 creative graduates. It left everyone who attended in awe of the amazing achievements, performances and creations of Haileybury’s young people across the Performing and Visual Arts.
Representing the Visual Arts through presentations of their final works were Ashley Tonelli (Studio Arts), Liah Liao (Visual Communication Design), Jacob Anderson (Media), and Bailey Yates (Product Design and Technology). It was wonderful to see so many current students in the audience being inspired by these accomplished artists, directors and designers.
All about Product Design and Technology
Unit 1 VCE Product Design and Technology sees students explore and apply methods to sustainably redevelop products. In Term 1A, students design, develop and make a storage box using a range of critical and creative design thinking techniques.
This preliminary design task allows students to learn how to correctly and safely use tools, equipment and materials including sustainably sourced timbers such as reclaimed Red Gum and Victorian Ash.
To individualise their box designs, students use decorative techniques including intarsia, fret work, inlay and pyrography that combine hand woodworking skills and laser technologies. Students then apply the design process to re-design and develop a sustainable lamp as their main Unit 1 folio and production task.

Pipes & Drums
Pipes & Drums information night
The Pipes & Drums information night was a resounding success with over 100 people attending at Berthon Hall, Newlands. The night was an opportunity for P&D families to learn about the upcoming Pipes & Drums season and to hear from the Parent Association about their plans.
The night was led by myself and Susan Carrolo, President of the Friends of the Pipes & Drums, but was opened by our new C Band who set the tone with a rousing performance that showcased their new skills and dedication to the art of pipe and drum music. They were met with enthusiastic applause from parents, most of whom witnessed their child’s debut performance.
Attendees received information about different competitions and events and learned the intricate details of how to put on the Pipes & Drums uniform. The Parent Association discussed the many ways in which parents can support the Pipes & Drums program through volunteering, joining the uniform inspection crew, or simply attending performances.
We look forward to the exciting season ahead and the many opportunities in the 2023 Pipe Band Competition Season.
